Dr. Cornel West visited First
Presbyterian Church last week
as the 2015 Willard Lecture
Speaker. He challenged all
to realize that justice is “not
identical to love - it’s just inseperable from love” as he discussed social justice through
the lens of faith.

The words above belong to Dr. Cornel West,
author of more than 20 books, professor of
philosophy, spoken word artist and sometime

preacher and the potentially discomfiting power
of x-ray insight.
The man connected to the voice is considered

commitment to racial and social justice in our
world.
His words, delivered to an audience of more
than 700 congregation and community
members, and to countless others following the
#cltjustice hashtag on Twitter, fell on receptive
ears and open hearts. The message: There
is much wrong. There is much to be done,
to ourselves and for others. There are many
questions to be asked, much to be demanded, of
ourselves and others. As people of faith, we must
be open to awareness, willing to go to difficult
places within ourselves, and ready to recognize
that while we all fall short, we all, as children
of God, have a responsibility to seek and assure
justice for our brothers and sisters in the world.

Poverty Scholars will join us as part of their program to eradicate poverty
through relationships. These scholars who live each day in the reality of poverty,
will have dinner with us and share their personal stories opening the way for us
to relate as fellow children of God. Fostering these relationships across socioeconomic boundaries will help us all deconstruct the divisive and misleading
categories of the "haves" and "have nots."
Oct. 21 - Ethics and Cultural Diversity: Understanding our Biases.
Natalie Conner returns to expand on her June 1 class on Unintentional Bias
as she encourages an attitude of cultural humility - a perspective that is collaborative, other-oriented, and egalitarian and is at the heart of being aware of
our biases, prejudices, and privileges. The class will help us recognize areas of
conflict and accommodation between our personal and/or professional values
and those of other cultures and help us to change our own lens and reactions as
we seek to foster community and positive relations.

First Presbyterian Prayer Ministry
The Prayer Ministry of FPC seeks to support this community of faith through intercessory
prayer and education. If you would like to be on the church’s prayer list, please contact the
church office or any of the pastors. If you would like prayer for a need that is causing you
fear or any concern join a member of the Prayer Ministry Team and a pastor in the overflow area after
the 9 am service and in the chapel after the 11 am service.
“We look upon prayer as a means of getting things for ourselves; the Bible idea for prayer is that
we may get to know God Himself.” Oswald Chambers
Medical Mission Trip to Bayonnais, Haiti
November 12-17, 2015
Attention nurses, doctors, dentists and all others in health
related professions! Planning is underway for a First Pres
medical mission trip to Haiti this fall. If you want to use
your professional knowledge and skills to help improve the
health of our brothers and sisters in Bayonnais, consider
joining this group and making the trip. We will work alongside fellow Haitian professionals in delivering health care
and in learning more about the specific health care needs of
the people of Bayonnais. Be a part of this exciting outreach
as we seek to share our faith as we serve the people of this
remote and very poor mountain area.

Serving Our Neighbor
he gifts we have received are not ours alone. God gave them to us for the purpose of serving God and others. Through the
offering of our time, talent, and treasure, we seek to more perfectly reflect God’s kingdom and participate in the transformative
work of the Holy Spirit within ourselves, in the lives of others, and in our community.
Westerly Hills Academy
September 20 Stewardship of Life by Katherine Kerr
Christ calls us to look beyond ourselves and our notions of
greatness, to open our arms and our hearts to the least
among us, to welcome children in his name. For the past
fifteen years, FPC has been in partnership with Westerly
Hills Academy. Once an elementary school, Westerly Hills
now serves students in Pre-K through 8th grade. The school
is in a neighborhood off of Wilkinson Blvd near the airport.
97% of its students are on free or reduced-price lunch, and
the majority of them test below grade level. The current
kindergarten classes tested much lower than previous classes,
mainly because these students did not have the opportunity
to attend preschool.
There is no question that poverty can have a significant, lifealtering impact on a child’s education. You may have read
articles in the paper or seen pieces on the news about the
state of public education in our country, our state, and our
city. Such news can be overwhelming-the problems seem
way too big for one person to address. But they are not too
big for a community to address.
Through our partnership with Westerly Hills, FPC has the
chance to make an immediate, lasting impact in the lives of
countless students, families and educators. Through traditional
means like tutoring and providing school supplies, and innovative
programs like Project Backpack Weekend Meal Bags and
afterschool enrichment programs through Discovery Place
and Let Me Run, many FPC members and friends are giving
of themselves and their time to make a difference at Westerly
Hills Academy.
It is our responsibility as followers of Christ to reach out to
our neighbors in need wherever we encounter them. More
than that, though, it is a gift to share what we have been
given so that all may have enough.
EVERY THIRD GRADER AT WESTERLY HILLS ACADEMY NEEDS A LITERACY MENTOR/TUTOR
The North Star Reading Program is an initiative put in
place this year by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Superintendent,
Ann Clark. Every third grader below proficiency in reading
will be paired with a mentor. The reading partner will meet
with the third grader once a week for a total of 30 one-onone sessions during the school year. The two will work on
comprehension skills.
The mentors will have an orientation before they start
tutoring. All material will be ready for the mentor.
Materials include a binder with all 30 lessons and a student
book bag with their level of books, journals, and writing tools.
The hope is that with social, emotional, and academic
support, these students will reach proficiency by the end
of the year and be prepared to enter fourth grade.
Studies have shown that when a child has just one person
to predictably rely on, can move out of intergenerational
poverty. Consider being that person!
DISCOVERY PLACE AFTER SCHOOL AT WESTERLY HILLS ACADEMY
FPC will again support a special STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering & Math) after-school program
at Westerly Hills Academy (WHA). This program is
funded by a grant from the Catherine S. Grier
Community Building Initiative of FPC for the students
of WHA. The program will run for 8 weeks this fall.
Discovery Place will provide instructors for the custom
designed program. Westerly Hills teachers and 25 students
