Quick Times Lone Star Performance Buick Club Volume 20 Issue 1 Autorama 2008 Inside QT: • • • • • • • Notes From the Officers North Stars All Out Race AutoRama 2008 Upcoming Events TMCCC Schedule PINKs Car Progress LSPBC Race Program Photo by Rob Downey Officers : President: David Newton Vice President: Victor Segovia Spring 2008 Photo by Rob Downey Secretary The Buicks were out in force at this year’s Autorama! LSPBC had the largest club display at the show! Special Thanks goes out to all of those who attended and brought their cars and congratulations to the Class Winners: James Weinman, Kent Hagler, and Rob Downey! This show, and others like it, are an excellent marketing opportunity for the club to recruit more members. We lost track of how many people were inquiring about membership, not to mention how many probably didn’t say any thing to anyone there. Members should make this show, and others like it, a high priority to attend out of all the other events in order to get memberships on the rise again. I'll do my best for you! First off Autorama! Need I say more? Awesome show. Pinks Project vote coming up on March 29th, at PAPA BBQ be sure to be there. We will have info about the car shows and the race events as well. I would like to start by saying thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you and the club as your vice president this year. I know it’s going to be a challenge but it will be a fun one. We do have some awesome events planned for this year and hopefully you will like them and everyone will participate. We will still have our show once a month on the 3rd Saturday of the month and the race program will continue to be on the second Saturday of the month like we’ve done in the past. If it’s not broken why fix it right? We want to invite everyone to come out and join the fun that will come in the 2008 season. We started out our year by having a great turnout of Buicks represent The Lone Star Performance Buick Club at AutoRama last month. We had an excellent showing of the older GS’s and the Turbo Cars. We shined this year at AutoRama and really showed the viewers what going fast with class was all about. I felt that this year was the best year we’ve ever had at the AutoRama show because we were swarmed with people asking questions and wanting to know more. We passed out quite a few membership applications to people who were interested in what we were about. We all were preaching the Buick word to anybody that would listen. The cool part about the whole thing is that the viewers wanted to know more and it felt great to brag on our cars and our club. I also think that our club is very fortunate to have members like we do because when it comes down to it, the love for the cars is what brings us together. It’s about having fun and enjoying ourselves while teaching and learning from one another. Once again, I want to say thanks and to congratulate my other office members in office this year. We will do our Buick best to try and make it a fun and enjoyable year for the club members. Welcome to all of the new officers this year, you may have noticed a few names have changed. Give these guys your support remember it is not a club without you! See ya at the other end. David Newton Next club meeting: The next club meeting will be held at PAPA's BBQ on Saturday, March 29th at 6:30pm. BIG BAD BUICK T- S H I R T S These will be available at the March club meeting and coming events. Cost are $15. Thanks, Victor Segovia Vice President Get Published in Our Newsletter! More details as they become available. You can also check out www.carsroadshow.com NorthStar Dragway’s All Out Event Feb. 10, 2008 What a beautiful day for racing this was. Morning started off cold, but soon the sun was up and the pits were full of racers ready to begin the season. LSPBC members Duke McClain and myself were there to try to get some Buicks in the main event. The event format was similar to the PINKS All Out series. Time trails were held for qualifying for 3 hours, then based on each persons fastest time in qualifying track officials would then pick the tightest grouping and most competitive 16 cars for a heads up elimination, winner takes home $2,000!! After unloading the car and making a few passes, I knew then that most of the cars there were running 6.5 or faster so I wasn’t going to have a chance. There were a hand full of cars that broke drive shafts on the start as the track prep was incredible. The new track officials also made a point to go around and introduce themselves that morning and the track improvements were very evident, with new concrete on the track and a huge new ET display board at the end of the track. There was also one car that had a major fire at the end of the track, but emergency officials got there in time to save the back half of the car and most of the interior. The driver suffered some minor burns on his hands and face as the plastic windshield melted in front of him before he got the car stopped to get out. It was finally time for the announcement for the top 16, and sure enough, the top 16 were cars running around 6.0. There was at least a Buick GN of a non-club member representing the Buicks, but the dramatic wheel stand kept him from winning in the first round, only to knock his front bumper off during the landing. It was nice to see some other club members, past and present, out there spectating as well. The finals came down to a Austin Healey and a ‘68 Camaro, and the Austin Healey took the event! Photo by Rob Downey A reminder to always double check everything related to your fuel supply and do not cut corners..was a heck of a nice Camaro. www.Maresonline.com This Year’s LSPBC Race Series Rules and Changes Redline Race Series 2008 OK boys and girls were back for our 6th season at Redline Raceway. Starting in April through October the 2nd Saturday of the month. The general rules will remain the same for 2008 with an addition of a Sportsman ladder bracket** (See next page for explanation of how the Sportsman ladder pairs up racers) $10.00 to bracket race Must be Buick or Buick powered to gain Points *Street cars only, No ProMods, No Full out race cars, No delay boxes, and No throttle stops are allowed . Cars must be tagged and inspected. No burnouts past the starting line. This would be a automatic disqualification. Any tire is ok. You may race any type of car you want and win money at the monthly races, but you must be Buick or Buick powered to be awarded points. Must be a paid club member to run brackets. Club dues are $30 per year. All ties will be decided by reaction times. Monthly $$ Payouts are pending car count. More cars = higher payouts. Payouts are for 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th places. All time trials will be run out of lane 4 with one exception. If you are running street tires and get in line early, 6:30pm, please line up in lane 3 for your first pass. Redline officials like to run cars with slicks for the first 10-15 pairings from lane 4. We do not want to block lane 4 with street tire cars early. All time trials will be out of lane 4 after 7pm for LSPBC racers. **2008 rule addition 1. All LSPBC racers are required to meet in the pits with the race director at 8:30pm to pay for entry fee and draw for positions (drawing order will determine your Sportsman ladder position, not qualifying times). 2. All paid racers will draw an entry number that will be used to determine the order each racer will draw a second time for a position on the Sportsman ladder bracket. 3. Any late entry participants after Sportsman ladder positions have been drawn for will automatically be positioned in the last position of the Sportsman ladder bracket. 4. The Sportsman ladder bracket will be set up prior to 9pm to determine each Sportsman pairing for the night and who will get the bye run for the night if required. 5. Sportsman ladder bracket link http://www.raceamerica.com/idx.shtml?http&&&www.raceamerica.com/ dragdata.html Click on Sportsman ladder 2 to 16 for example of running orders. 6. Lane choice will be given to the higher drawn position in the Sportsman ladder race pair, for all races. 7. All eliminations will be out of lanes 5 and 6 and start at 9pm sharp. 8. A no show or break of your race opponent will be an automatic loss and the win will be automatic to the racer that completes the pass. 9. Redline has requested that the racers to be ready to run in 5 minutes from when they call us to the lanes. Points Series. 10 points per round made. You must make the pass to earn the 10 points. 5 bonus points will awarded for winning the event. Points Series will payout up to four places. $$ TBD All vehicles must be Buick or Buick powered to be awarded points. * This is at the discretion of the Race Director and the club President. ** 2008 rule addition John Martin LSPBC Race Director The Sportsman Ladder Bracket for LSPBC Races The Sportsman Ladder is built on the concept of dividing the class into two groups, the higher qualifying drivers form the fast group and the other half of the class form the slower group. In the case of ET's, the drivers with the fastest ET are grouped together against the drivers with the slower ETs. The fastest ET in the fast group is paired against the fastest ET in the slow group. The second fastest ET in the fast group is paired against the second fastest ET in the slow group and so on. BYE runs are inserted in the ladders to match the best qualifier with a BYE run in the earliest round. The second best qualifier will get a BYE run in a later round if a second BYE is available for that particular ladder. BYE runs could apply to the third and possibly the fourth best qualifier in some ladders. For the LSPBC Races, positions will be drawn for and qualifying times will not be used, so it’s the luck of the draw. 9-Car Sportsman Ladder Example 1 4 8 2 6 3 7 5 9 The diagram to the right is an example of a 9-Car Sportsman ladder, notice where the BYE runs appear. Cars 1-5 are the “fast group” while cars 6-9 are the “slower group”. A Buick Restoration Tip! It’s not very often I give compliments to someone and their business but after my experience with Jim McQuery, owner of Performance Powder Works in Royse City, Texas, I feel compelled to do so. Before I start bragging on Performance Powder Works I would like to introduce myself. My name is Jeff Horsman; I live in Rowlett Texas and have owned many Buick products over the years. Some of you in the Lone Star Performance Buick Club are familiar with me but probably remember my cars more so than me. My first car was a 1967 GS400 which I raced in the Texas Muscle Car Challenge in Ennis, Texas back in 1987. I was only sixteen years old at the time and drove this car back and forth to high school. Those were some great times. My membership in the LSPBC was in the early 90’s when I owned a 1987 Turbo Regal. I participated in the Buick Nationals at the Texas Motorplex with the Regal and fared well clicking off some low 12’s with some minor modifications; not bad for a young kid with low funding. Afterwards I married, my career became busy and shortly thereafter the Buick hobby slowed down causing me to lose touch with the club. Twelve years passes without a big block Buick in the garage, now with the support from my wife and friends, I am coming back to my first love, 455 Buick power! The most recent car you might remember was a Black/Gold 1971 GSX clone that I participated in many LSPBC car shows. Unfortunately the car had to be sold 14 months ago to finance my current project, a 1970 GS Stage1 4speed. The Stage 1 is currently undergoing a frame off restoration worthy of any concours event. The projected completion time is in the middle of this summer with plans to bring the car out to many local shows. I have set a personal goal to win the Concours Gold at one of the National Buick events. Since I am such a picky type; I have completed most of the work myself. For the items I cannot do nor have the facilities to do, I have entrusted them to the best professionals. One of the professionals I am using in my restoration project is Jim McQuery, owner of Performance Powder Works. With his help I have reproduced factory finishes to body, engine and suspension components. When you enter Jim’s shop you get the feeling you are somewhere else besides a powder coating shop. I hate to stereotype but most powder coating shops are dirty and unorganized. Jim’s shop is just Advertisers Index Accounting / CPA Services: Brimer, Perry and Associates -3/08 Morgan Farrington & Company Inc. - 3/08 Automotive: Wilson Auto Repair Mac’ Performance - 3/08 - 12/08 Computer / IT Services: eSI2, Inc. -3/08 Livestock: MaresOnline -3/08 Investment / Banking: Jayson Pruitt—Oil & Gas Minerals Oppenheimer and Company Inc. -3/08 -3/08 Rentals: Budget Rental -3/08 the opposite, this helps a picky person like me feel comfortable leaving my rare hard to find parts in his hands. Another plus, the estimated time for completion has always been right on. Powder coating is a much better alternative to painting with improved durability and convenience. I was so impressed with the color choices and application processes; I keep looking for more stuff to take in to have powder coated. Before you decide to sandblast and spray paint those rare Buick parts, load that stuff up and take them to Jim, you will be just as impressed as I am. You can contact Jim at 972-635-6010 or email at [email protected]. Big thanks to Performance Powder Works in Royse City for helping me achieve my restoration goals. Jeff Horsman
