Proudly Supporting
Football in WA
Peel struggling locally,
shining nationally
IT’S been another tough year locally for Peel but at national youth
level some of their brightest prospects are taking centre stage.
The State 18s kicked off their NAB AFL National 18s Championships
campaign last weekend and while WA went down to South Australia,
Thunder products Harley Bennell and Blayne Wilson were among the
Black Swans’ best.
It’s a recurring story that is more like a nightmare than a fairytale for
the WAFL’s youngest club.
Getting national attention for the talent the Peel region produces
dates back to the likes of Daniel Wells (drafted by North Melbourne
at No.2 in 2002), Farren Ray (Western Bulldogs, No. 4, 2003) and Scott
Gumbleton (Essendon, No.2, 2006) among others.
But as the young talent is depleted from their stocks each year the
coaching staff struggle to cover the losses and as a result struggle to
remain competitive on a consistent basis in the WAFL.
Last week’s 194-point loss to Claremont highlighted how extreme
Peel’s performances can be.

“Admittedly it is a hard sell.
Players like to win and while
our new facility will assist us in
getting players it will not be the
panacea of our woes.”

Coach Trevor Williams said while he doesn’t have the options to
change his approach to this season, he still sees playing finals in 2012
as a realistic goal for his side.
“While we are not happy with the extremes of our performances,
we can guarantee that we are working hard to turn it around,” Williams
said.
“But at this stage we don’t have the quality of the other teams.
“Despite that our boys manage to stay positive and take the good
with the bad.”
Williams admits that the only way the club can move forward with
plans on making the finals in two year’s time is to recruit heavily.
“One or two players aren’t going to make a different to us,” he said.
“We need a package of at least six players who want to be around
for at least two or three years.
“Admittedly it is a hard sell. Players like to win and while our new
facility will assist us in getting players it will not be the panacea of our
woes.”
Williams said it was a catch 22 when it comes to the Peel region’s
ability to produce quality AFL talent.
“It is great that these boys get a chance to realise their childhood
dreams and play AFL, but they are never with us very long before they
are off again.”
Bennell, Wilson, State 18s captain Kieran Butcher, Joel O’Driscoll and
Liam McKenna are all perfect examples.
While some have not even played league football, those that
have are more than likely to be whisked onto the national stage this
November and, if they head east, may never wear a Peel jumper again.
“Our goal is to be one club, one culture and to play finals in 2012,”
Williams said.
“We understand what we need is not a short-term fix but we are
prepared to do whatever we have to for this club to succeed.”
WA’s next 18s clash is against Queensland this Sunday, June 6 in
Blacktown, NSW.

Best First Year
Country Player
AARON Elari’s lead in the 2010 Best First Year
Country Player Award has been trimmed to
three after Swan Districts’ Clinton Garlett
picked up three votes last weekend.
Garlett’s exploits moved him another vote
closer to Elari.
To be eligible for votes in the Best First
Year Country Player Award, players must have
played eight games or less at the start of
the 2010 season and be aged 21 or under at
the end of the season. AFL-listed rookies are
eligible to win the award as long as they are
not elevated to the senior AFL list throughout
the season.
Votes are allocated by the WA Country
Football League each week, with a maximum
of three given to any one player, with no limit
to the number of players who can be allocated
votes (3, 2 or 1).

Player-of-the-Year
A 32-possession game has propelled Swan
Districts half forward Andrew Krakouer to a
five-vote lead in the Good Guys 2010 Playerof-the-Year Award.
Krakouer was instrumental in the Black
Ducks getting the better of West Perth last
weekend and as a result he again collected top
votes.
A five-goal haul from South Fremantle
forward Nathan Phillips earned him three
votes and moved him up the rankings to a
season tally of six.

Q&A
Name: Damian
Matthews
Club: Perth
What year did you start
as president: 2005
A brief rundown of
your background: I
have been a passionate
follower of the Demons
since I was little. I joined the board in 2000 and
worked on various portfolios under the late,
great Brian Lawrence before taking over from
him as president in 2005.
What were your aims for the club when you
started: I have only ever had one aim and that
is for the club to play regular finals football
and be in the mix for a flag. Anything else was
Following some independent research
done on WAFL spectators, we also found that
admittance price was not the major limiter of
attendance. That is, crowds would not swell if
entry was free.
People go because they like the
experience.
Previous Dollar days did not cause a
doubling of attendance at games. We do feel
that the WAFL has a good product that has
a large attendance of dads, mums and kids
who can watch the footy from the banks, have
a kick with the kids and go and listen to the
coach (although you may have to get close as
some of them talk very quietly).
Many clubs provide bouncy castles, face
painting and footy activities for kids free of
charge.
So while the WAFL, through the clubs, tries
various promotions to attract people to the
games, we feel that the major attractions are
related directly or indirectly toward this. This
hasn’t happened yet but the foundations are
better than they were in the past.
What are your current aims for the club
(short and long-term) off the field: There are
two key aims. The first is to keep working on
our relationship with the District so talented
kids are developed and want to come to the
club. The second is to raise as much revenue
as possible. Success in the WAFL costs money.
Good administrators, players, coaches, medical
support and facilities do not come cheap.
What are your current aims for the club
(short and long-term) on the field: We not
only want to be successful but we want to do
it overwhelmingly with local talent. Football
clubs will always recruit and we love the players
from outside the District but it makes sense
to try and achieve success with local players.
The recent District boundary changes set us
back a bit in this but we believe we have the
fundamentals in place. We have strong junior
clubs and when talented players come down
to EFTel there are good facilities, coaches and
support.
What do you consider your major
achievements since you started in the role:
Ask
the facilities,
a close game
and a friendly
environment.
All of which we
are working
on.
Clint
Q: Has the WAFL considered having the
occasional ‘Dollar Day’ during the season
to promote the game. From John Lawson
of Mt Lawley.
A: There were a few WAFL ‘Dollar Days’ held
during the mid 1990’s that were moderately
successful at a time when the WAFL was
feeling the impact of the second AFL team
and the subsequent impact on attendances.
I had to do a bit of research on this from
those who were involved at this time but
Dollar Days were the start of strategies to
attract new football followers who may not
have been before.
The health of football and WAFL clubs
revolves around getting interest among kids
through playing and supporting. The WAFL
feels that we have bettered the Dollar Days
by allowing free entry to children under the
age of 16 for all games. Clubs also invite
many children to games to participate in
Little League and Auskick games.
Do you have a question about
the WAFL you would like answered?
Football Budget readers can send their
questions to [email protected] and
we will ask WAFL operations manager Clint
Roberts to answer them.
I haven’t achieved anything by myself but a
team of dedicated people at all levels over
the last decade has given the club increased
credibility and financial strength. This has
flowed through to better relationships with
the District and the WAFC, improved facilities
and a level of spending on football that should
allow us to be competitive. Attracting a major
sponsor like Phoenix Shutdown Services has
been very important to us.
Explain some of the major challenges of
your role: In most WAFL clubs everything
needs to go right just to remain financially
viable. All administrators would love to spend
more time planning and working on the
bigger picture but the need to make money
constantly distracts you and immerses you in
the day to day running of the club.
What can supporters expect from your
club on and off the field this year: On the
field we had great expectations at the start
of the season but now it is just a matter of
trying to restore credibility. Off the field there
will be great match day experiences and a
range of fundraising events which are good
entertainment and which we, as a club, need
members to support.

GAME
PREVIEWS
South Fremantle v East
Fremantle
Look for: Not much to separate
these teams this Foundation Day,
as was the case last season.
The Sharks emerged victorious
by one point in the corresponding
game last year and given the
way the two teams are travelling
at the moment a similarly tight
encounter is on the cards this
Foundation Day Monday.
The teams have already met
once this year, with the Sharks
running away with a 46-point
victory at Fremantle Oval.
Since switching from the
Sharks to the Bulldogs Andrew
McCarrey has played a fair bit
in defence and could get a job
on livewires Callum Wilson
or Nathan Phillips, while the
addition of Jaymie Graham and
Andrew Siegert in the Bulldogs
line-up last week added plenty of
leadership and class.
Sam Hunt is set to play his 50th
game for the Bulldogs.
Looking good in the ressies:
The Bulldogs had 10 goal kickers
in their win over the Royals last
weekend, with Brett Stanford
their best. The Sharks lost their
third game of the season but
Michael Griffiths had 27 hit outs
to be among his team’s most
influential players.
Overall record: South Fremantle
won 161, East Fremantle won
189, Drawn 4
Overall grand final record:
Played 10, South Fremantle won
4, East Fremantle won 6
Claremont v Subiaco
Look for: Livewire veteran Allistair
Pickett who plays his 150th game
for the Lions this weekend. He also
played 3 games for West Perth and
22 for Peel.
The Lions have not played
since May 15 when they got the
better of South Fremantle. Since
then they have had the State game
bye followed by their scheduled
regular-season bye so Pickett and
his men have had plenty of time
to rest and recoup ahead of taking
on the goal kicking power of the
Tigers.
Last weekend the Tigers
bagged a massive 38.12 (240)
which is the seventh highest ever
total recorded by a WAFL team.
The winning margin of 194 points
is ranked fifth highest ever and
third biggest in open football –
the other two were in 1944 in the
underage competition.
Pickett made his WAFL debut
back in 2003 and has a son, Alliston,
playing for the Lions colts.
Looking good in the ressies:
Aaron Holt, Bradley Nisbett and
Dylan Ross helped carve out
Claremont’s seventh win of the
season, proving the depth of talent
they have at Tigerland in 2010.
Subiaco’s reserves have won
just the two games this season but
have had three weeks to get ready
for this challenge.
Overall record: Claremont won
118, Subiaco won 136, Drawn 1
Overall grand final record: Played
5, Claremont won 2, Subiaco won 3
written by Tracey Lewis
West Perth v East Perth
Look for: A clash of traditional
rivals with one team needing to
get back on the winner’s list to
push back into the top four and the
other team needing a win to give
its season some respectability.
The Falcons are sitting one
game out of the top four while the
Royals have won just two games
(against Peel and Perth) and
need a victory against their arch
nemesis to halt their poor first half
of the season.
Forwards Andrew Merrington,
Adam Prior and Tim Noakes were
lovely for the Royals last week so
the Falcons defensive unit will
need to be at its running best to
contain them.
West Perth’s Matt Guadagnin
and East Perth’s Adam Pickering
are both expected to play their
100th league games in this match.
Looking good in the ressies:
Tom Crossland kicked two goals
and was best on ground for the
Falcons last week, pushing his case
for a league recall.
For the Royals, Zach Beeck
was their best player and his
experience and bulk would be
a handy asset to his team this
week. The ruck duties were
mostly left to second-gamer
Jamie Birrell against the
Bulldogs last weekend and the
addition of Beeck will bolster
the ruck division against a
potent Falcons midfield.
Overall record: West Perth
won 154, East Perth won
159, Drawn 5
Overall grand final
record: Played 6, West
Perth won 4, East Perth
Kasey Green
Perth v Peel
Look for: The way Peel responds
to its almighty hiding at the
hands of a ruthless Claremont last
weekend.
The Thunder have had a
rollercoaster year, scoring wins
over Perth and West Perth, but
when they have lost they have
tended to go down by big margins
(except Round 3 when they lost to
East Fremantle by just two points).
The Demons are just as
desperate as the Thunder as they
are still looking to record their first
win of the season.
This game is due to be
ruckman Will Sullivan’s 50th WAFL
appearance.
Looking good in the ressies:
Bradley Fry scored four goals
from his 13 kicks for the Demons
whose best was Liam Smith with
24 disposals. For the Thunder, Tom
McCulloch kicked three goals and
Justin Giumelli was in good touch.
Overall record: Perth won 20, Peel
won 13
Overall grand final record:
Played 0

Dockers Cup gains momentum
All the schools and girls were winners
MOVE over boys, it’s time for the girls to shine.
And shine they did at Steele Blue Oval on Wednesday, May 19 for competing and enjoying themselves so
when Swan Districts Football Club was the proud host of the first much. Their schools should be proud of their
annual Dockers Cup – a new girls only primary school football exemplary behaviour and sportsmanship.
Congratulations to all the girls and their
competition.
It was a magnificent, warm and sunny autumn day when teachers, who can look forward to another
emerging stars from Good Shepherd Catholic School, Guildford, great day next year.
Bassendean, Woodbridge, Swan View and Darlington
Primary Schools put on their boots and their happy faces
for a day of fun.
They had obviously being training and their
enthusiasm and skills were fantastic and they competed
hard.
The girls had a blast and were incredibly vocal in the
midst of the action by calling out and making strong
leads – well done!
At one point during the break the volume reached
an all time high with squeals of delight from a couple of
school teams who, on their break, spotted Nic Naitanui
leaving the club.
The games were umpired by three enthusiastic
Swans WA Women’s Football League players who did a
marvellous job, giving the players the benefit of coaching
them at the same time as umpiring.
Darlington Primary School managed to bring home
the Dockers Cup trophy, closely followed by Bassendean
Primary School.
Schoolgirls from all over Perth competed in the Dockers Cup at Steel Blue Oval.

All for the girls at Ocean Ridge
Ocean Ridge Junior Footy Club and West
Perth District Development Officer Megan
O’Mara have made the brave move to
provide an all girls option within their
Auskick Program.
WAFC Coordinator of Female Football
Clint Degebrodt said this was an exceptional
opportunity for young girls.
“Hats off Scott and his team up at Ocean
Ridge, the girls have asked for a femalededicated side in a ‘girls only’ setting, which
has now been provided,” he said.
Ocean Ridge JFC is very keen to continue
the promotion of Girls Auskick and currently
has two teams – the Dolphins (Pre-Primary &
Yr1) and Marlins (Yr2 and 3).
The club is keen for this initiative to develop
further and prepared to create as many teams
as needed.
The more girls, the more teams, and the
more teams, the more fun!
Ocean Ridge is also offering the program to
females for half price, with the girls to receive
an Auskick pack, specialist coaching and 6-10
weeks of real footy!

State manager of Auskick in WA Clayton
Anderson also heaped praise on the
initiative: “This is a fantastic opportunity for
girls in the West Perth District to experience
footy in a safe friendly and fun environment,”
Anderson said.

By Andrea Damonse
Roos standing out
Round 9 of C Gold action kicks off this week
with three teams at the top of the ladder
looking to establish a foothold as the most
dominant team in the league.
Wanneroo has stood out this half of the
season with an average winning margin of 66
points in seven wins, however Kingsway is hot
on their heels with seven consecutive wins,
three of those by 10 points or less.
Former SFL club and second-placed
Thornlie are also firming up as favourites this
year with an average margin of +23 points and
an undefeated home record, a feat matched
only by Wanneroo who, as a club over its four
teams, has only lost one game at home this
season.
The match of the week this round is
undoubtedly the top of the table clash at
Wanneroo Showground between the Roos
and Thornlie, both of whom have lost just one
game this season.
Thornlie picked up the win last week at
home against Cockburn Lakes 11.9 (75) to 7.14
(56) to recording their fifth win in a row while
Wanneroo demolished Kenwick at Mills Park
by 109 points to pick up their third straight
win.
A win for Thornlie this week could see
them slot into top spot, however they could
fall down to third with a loss and a win for the
third-placed Kingsway.
Also sitting on seven wins and one loss for
the season, Kingsway will be looking to secure
top spot with a win over Cockburn Lakes at
Anning Park.
After a Round 1 loss to Wanneroo,
Kingsway has not lost a game, last week
defeating Bullcreek Leeming by four points in
an exciting game at Kingsway Reserve to pick
up their seventh consecutive victory.
Cockburn Lakes are 2-2 at home and will
be looking to move up the ladder from eighth
with an upset win over Kingsway who are
undoubtedly the team to beat approaching
the second half of the year.
The match of the week
this round is undoubtedly
the top of the table clash
at Wanneroo Showground
between the Roos and
Thornlie, both of whom
have lost just one game
this season.
Bullcreek Leeming, currently sitting two
games out of the top three, faces Ocean Ridge
at Beasley Park in a game important for both
teams heading into the second half of the
season.
As a club, the four Bullcreek Leeming
teams have lost just three games combined
at Beasley Park this season, the most recent
being their C Gold team to Thornlie two weeks
ago.
Ocean Ridge need a win this week
combined with a Warnbro loss to advance
back into the top five after dropping out with
a loss to Quinns District last Saturday.
Warnbro go up against a Kenwick team
sitting second last and looking for their
second win of the season at Warnbro Sporting
Complex.
Surprisingly, Warnbro has won just once
at home this season and has a club home
record of six wins from 13 games, with a win
this week securing them a top five spot over
Ocean Ridge.
Quinns District takes on the winless
Manning at Ridgewood Park where they are
2-2 for the season.
Manning is yet to come into form this
season and look certain to be headed back
down to D grade next year, with an average
losing margin of 80 points.
