The Year for Rescue – Past and Future.

2014 was a busy year for Rescue. We dealt with 28 dogs. While this does not
seem like a lot, it is for Newfoundlands. I have been involved with other Rescues
and feel that we are very lucky we don’t take in as many as others do. Many people
do not understand what happens in Rescue from the initial contact about a dog in
need to the adoption process. Every contact we get is not taken lightly. Our goal is
to help the dog however we can.
Our first question is, “Why does this owner have to give up their dog(s)?”
For many, the reasons are financial. We have to dig deeper to determine if they
might be able to keep their dog if it just a minor medical problem that they cannot
afford. The OAR fund was developed for circumstances like this. Every
circumstance is different. If the owner is not able to afford vet care because they lost
their job and their dog needs vaccinations, the OAR fund can assist. The second
question asked is, “Who is the breeder?” and “Have you contacted them?” While
the better breeders will take their dogs back (many have this in their contract) others
will not care and will not.
Then we must find out more about the dog. We have a questionnaire we
send out to be completed by the owner and we also spend time on the phone talking
about the dog. We need to know the temperament of the dog. Some of the things
we ask: Does the dog get along with other dogs? Has the dog been with cats? How
about children and what ages? Then we have to know if the dog has any medical
issues that need to be dealt with right away. These answers will assist us to putting
the dog in a foster home.
Once the dog is put into a foster home, it is provided with a check up from the
veterinarian. All needed vaccinations are administered and the dog is evaluated for
any medical issues. The dogs are also spayed or neutered. If there are any major
health problems the CNC Board of Directors discuss the issues and determine if we
should pursue further treatment. The foster home then evaluates the personality of
the dog. They are given a questionnaire to complete over the next several weeks.
We like to keep the dog in a foster home for about 2-3 weeks so we can properly
access the dog. Most fosters have their dogs for an average of 30 – 60 days. It all
depends on age, temperament, training, medical, etc.
In order for someone to adopt a dog they must complete an application. The
application provides information about the applicants and their family (human and
not). If we feel that they could be a good home, we then ask a volunteer (club
member) to conduct a home visit. The home visit is to meet the family and
determine whether they and their home would be a good fit for a Newfoundland.

The most important part is safety. They must have a safe environment for dogs. We
will then “match” up the dog with applicants by having the applicants meet the dog
and the foster. The foster has first right of refusal and will let me know if they think
the family is a good match. We are very particular to try and make this “match”
because we want everyone to be happy. If the match is not a good one, the dog will
come back into Rescue.
Rescue is one of the most difficult tasks in the club. It takes a lot of time and
devotion. Each dog is important to us. From the initial contact to the adoption there
is a lot of work that goes into the process.
We rely on our volunteers to help make this process go smoothly. We are
also looking for more members to assist. There are many opportunities to volunteer
but one of the most needed are foster homes. We don’t have very many of these.
About 30% of our foster homes are “failed fosters.” This means that they end up
adopting the dog that they foster. While this is wonderful, many times they won’t or
can no longer foster. They might be at their limit for the number of dogs in their
household or the dog they adopted does not get along with other dogs well.
Then we are looking for another foster home to replace that one. Fostering is
difficult for some because they have trouble giving up a dog. I completely
understand this as I have four failed fosters myself!
My Newfoundland was my first foster from CNC Rescue and I was looking
for a new home for him. The longer he
stayed the closer I got to him and the
more I loved his personality. So, I
finally decided he was the right match for
me.
My goal in fostering was to adopt
a Newfoundland and that is how I got
started with our club. I became a
member just so I could foster. I never
thought that I would end up being the
Rescue chair. I just wanted to adopt a
Newfoundland!

If you can assist Rescue with any of these tasks, please contact me:
Fostering – even if you have certain requirements – only female dogs, only
young or old dogs, etc.
Transporting dogs – this can be from a give up home or shelter to a foster
home or from a foster home to a veterinarian.
Home Visits – for potential adopters. We provide the guidance and
paperwork to complete.
Evaluating potential dogs to come into Rescue – this can be at someone’s
home or in a shelter.
Events – we will do four events this year to promote Rescue.
Train – assisting a foster home with training the dog. This could be leash
training, learning to go for car rides, or working with basic commands.
Grooming – you don’t need to be a professional! Some fosters just need help
with baths and brushing.
For all of the above opportunities (except fostering) please let me know how far you
will be willing to drive to assist.
Rescue will be looking for more events to participate in to promote adoption.
If you know of an event in your area that you think will be beneficial for us to be
involved in please let me know.
Last – but not least – I would like to thank and recognize two people that
have been a big help for me. Bob and Anne Blaicher have taken on the
responsibility for all of the paperwork for Rescue. They handle all of the veterinarian
accounts, expenses for Rescue and work with our Treasurer and myself to make sure
we do things correctly. They also have done a lot of transports for us this past year.

Tee Shirts
Show off your favorite Newf with a new tee shirt
design. CNC is reaching out to Newf lovers for
new designs for club Tee Shirts.
The designs can be large or small, suitable for hats
or Tee Shirts. We use the silk screening process for
the Tee Shirts and embroidery for small designs
such as baseball caps.
All that is required is the concept----because an artist
can do the final artwork! The current designs are
mostly Water Rescue and Drafting themes. It
would be nice to have something for Newf Rescue
and for people who foster Newfs. Designs could
also just have a cute Newf saying, like the Answer
Tee-shirt (see below.)
! Remember to include all the Newfs-----Black, Landseer, and Brown.
! If your design is selected, you will receive a free shirt!
Tee shirt designs for this year have already been chosen. We will offer Baseball caps,
Ski caps and Denim shirts, along with the Tee Shirts.
There have been several requests for 3XL, so limited amounts have been ordered.
In addition, several items will feature a Brown Newf.
A special thank you to all volunteers who worked so hard to create the existing tee
shirt designs, which everyone has enjoyed and loved!

Abbey, My Dog
Our 12 year-old dog, Abbey, died last month.
The day after she died, my four-year old
daughter Meredith, was crying and talking
about how much she missed Abbey. She
asked if we could write a letter to God so that
when Abbey got to heaven, God would
recognize her. I told her that I thought we
could, so she dictated these words:
Dear God,
Will you please take care of my dog?
She died yesterday and is with you in Heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let
me have her as my dog even though she got sick. I hope you will play with her. She likes to play
with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her, You will know that
she is my dog. I really miss her.

We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith, and
addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then, Meredith
pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots
of stamps to get the letter all the way to Heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into
the letter-box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the
letter yet? I told her that I thought He had.
Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed,
To Meredith, in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by
Mr. Rogers titled, When a Pet Dies. Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we
had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of
Abbey and Meredith, and this note:
Dear Meredith,
Abbey arrived safely in Heaven. Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right
away. Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart.
Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in Heaven, I don't have any
pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep
and have something to remember Abbey by.
Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and
sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you.
I send my blessings every day. Remember that I love you very much.
By the way, I'm easy to find; I am wherever there is love.

last time. With the larger venue we can have more observers (more than the 30 we had
before) and more than 50. I used 50 as an estimate on what we can expect.
• We provide the 2 day seminar, breakfast and "quality" lunch.

• We will need volunteers, who get to see the seminar for free.

• NENC has a 501C Fund like our Oar Fund. They will send their criteria to our committee

Report on Cassie:
• The owner of Cassie (8 year old female) phoned me to give her up due to skin issues
that he could no longer afford to care for. We set up an appt. for her to see Dr. Kable at
Airpark and paid for this and her meds with the OAR fund. The owner has had her since
a pup. He lost his job and only has PT work now.
• Kathy Paxton:
o Met Bill Schick today (Wednesday, November 5, 2014) at Airpark – this was the
O.A.R. female Newf with the skin issues. Very, very sweet girl.
o She is 8 years 1 month old, spayed; pictures from 18 months ago show a typical,
cute, hairy Newf.
o Truly complex issues as her problems probably are not a singular diagnosis.
o She has infected ears – cytology – both rods & cocci, = antibiotic resistant and
possibly later a
o Culture & sensitivity – the wait is deliberate as she may wind up on an antibiotic
for her skin
o Rear muscle atrophy profound! Not on any heartworm preventative, and grossly
underweight
o Skin cytology both yeast and bacteria
o Entropian, bi-lateral, but – this may clear when skin clears (might) tear test
normal – no dry eye, so she isn't in much discomfort right now.
Treatment and Tests:
o BNT treatment both ears
o Blood for snap heartworm test – negative – yeah!!
o Blood for thyroid (MI)
o Blood for chem. panel (full) and stool (she cooperated :-)
o Panacure, 5 days (giardia), 21 days later 5 days (hook)
o 6 months Sentinel
If her liver values are normal she can begin on an oral antifungal which also is an antibiotic
(maybe help with ears)
He has my email & is to send me phone number of pharmacy for meds (generic)
He is to continue baths – benzoyl peroxide every other day and to leave ears alone
If she needs thyroid meds (generic) same pharmacy for Bill – won't hear for about a week.
Her owner has really tried – just think he really wasn't receiving the best of veterinary advice and
don't think he has had much experience with 'vet things'. And, she is such a true, sweet Newf!
Even a stinky as she is Smile
Laid back YES! – but, can come alive to play when another dog is present. Likes other dogs, has
been around kids I have no idea of ages. Didn't want to get too specific with my ‘just chatting’
questions.
Dr Kable will call with blood work tomorrow – thyroid next week.
Dr. Kable was with us for a tad over 1 1/2 hours and did his usual thorough job.

• He called, blood work came back – she has now started on the anti-fungal meds
• Believe we established at a Board Meeting Judy would contact Lezli & Bennett to let them
know how, with the O.A.R. Fund, we were able to help a very sweet Newf.

• The CNC BoD appointed Kathy Paxton as the Point Person for all OAR Fund Dogs. She
will collect all information which includes diagnosis and interviews on Newf and Family
and present findings to the BoDs to make decisions.

This month no new rescues were brought in. But Rescue is getting busy.
Updates on fosters/adoptions:
• Barefoot/Bear - He is now with another family. He is doing well and getting a lot of
attention in this home. Still no interest in adoption.
• Sampson is still at Donnas’ and will need one more follow up appointment with the
surgeon next week. He has been posted on the website.
• Fletcher had the appointment at VOSM but we have not yet received anything in
writing. The surgeons decided that they would not recommend surgery at this point.
We do have a club member that is interested in adopting.
• Dunkin is now at Donnas’ until a new foster home can be found. He is doing well
and will be put on the website this week. He is a young 9 year old that gets along
well with other dogs but cannot be cats.
We had one private adoption this month.
We have not heard back from the owner wanting to surrender his 8-9 year old female
with skin issues.
Once again we are having issues getting foster homes for these dogs. While we have
some new foster homes not all of them can take any dog. Keep in mind that most of
the dogs we have been getting in have some type of issue. Here is an example of the
recent ones: Barefoot – frequent urination & stairs; Sampson – eye surgery and a
handful; Dunkin – no cats. Some of the foster homes we had previously have not
stepped up to foster again. They have other dogs now or their schedules have changed
and can no longer help. Donna will take dogs that have issues (behavior or medical) but
will not always have room. Donna needs all of the BODs assistance to find more foster
homes. Out of the recent pleas for help we only got about 3 responses. It is very sad
that a club our size does not have more people that will step in and help. The emergency
situation with the Dodd’s was good example of the lack of support. Several members
even have kennels that could have temporary housed these dogs instead of taking them
to outside kennel. Rescue is a big part of this club and the support network of the
members is not there. Donna has recruited several volunteers to join the club just for
that. Not all can foster but will help with transports and other needs.
KP would like to speak with any perspective adopters of Fletcher, so they are not
surprised by his condition. BoD Approved.

Portuguese Water Dog Club to create this schedule that is agreeable to both

• In 2015, we would like to challenge every CNC member to explore earning an AKC or
NCA title with their dog. The training you do towards earning that title will continue to
strengthen the bond you have with your dog. A good way to get started is to prepare

The 2015 Membership Directories will be mailed in January 2015.
Thirty days after publication in Bear Fare (per by-laws) each new member household will
receive a welcome packet that includes a welcome letter, Membership Directory, copy of
CNC Constitution and By-Laws, Membership Application form and a Club decal.
The 2015 membership directories will be mailed to the NCA Regional Club Liaison and the
VA Federation point of contact within one week of publication.
Non-renewals: 36 memberships did not renew in 2014: 12 family, 7 individual, 5
associate.
Based on a 267 membership total, 80 are members of the Newfoundland Club of America
(30% of the membership).
Here are the estimates of 2015 costs as a Membership Chair. Regardless of estimates,
these supplies, printings, postage whatever the costs are required.

• Proposal:
• As the new Membership Chair, one of the first changes I will be making is how
the membership directory is distributed.
• One of the problems with the current way we distribute the directory is that it is
static and does not include any updates/changes or new members throughout
the year. Members would need to print the updates in the newsletter and store
them with the directory in order to have relatively up-to-date information.
Another problem is that many people may not think to shred the old directory
when they receive the new directory, posing a privacy concern.
• Switching the membership directory to an electronic format would provide club
members up-to-date information year-round and save the club money. Now that
the club members are accustomed to receiving the newsletter and club updates
electronically, this would be an easy change to make.

My plan is to make the membership directory available this year in the form of a
PDF file that can be accessed via a download link. The link would be mailed to
club members and they could access the directory at any time for the most
current and up-to-date information. This information would not be visible unless
you had the link to the file.

o The Colonial Newfoundland Club NCA Regional Specialty was held in conjunction
with the Middleburg Kennel Club all breed show on October 27, 2014 in
Leesburg, Virginia. The specialty attracted 65 entries with 15 in Sweepstakes
and 50 in the regular classes. In addition to the specialty, CNC supported the
entry on Sunday.
o After judging, we all gathered around Colonial Newfoundland Club’s tent to eat
and socialize for the rest of the afternoon. Many thanks to all our volunteers,
with a special thank you to trophy chair, Kathy Hamilton, brown bag chair, Peggy
Darling, and our wonderful hospitality chair, Trish Fornadley.
o On Sunday, CNC held a supported entry in conjunction with the MKC all breed
show on October 28, 2014. After judging CNC hosted an AKC Canine Good
Citizen test run by Rose Miller. Many thanks to Rose, all the club members who
helped at the test, and Kathy Paxton for ordering the beautiful ribbons awarded
to participants that passed the test.

On January 5, 2015 I received the following correspondence from Middleburg
Kennel Club stating that the Middleburg Kennel Club will not be holding their all
breed show in October 2015
• Discussion is taking place for a 2015 Regional Chaired by Don Sharkey and Cindy
Flowers
• Looking into a new venue for 2016 and possibly combine our awards ceremony
with this regional.

Rescue – Donna McConn
• Written report on Fletcher received and place in file, no action needed
• Three new rescues were taken in December 2014:
o Itzel: 3-year-old female from Culpeper County Shelter. She was an owner give up.
She was spayed after coming into rescue. Her foster is adopting her.
o Leo: 1 year old male from Culpeper County. He was neutered after coming into
rescue and he also needed entropion surgery. This was done. His eyes had been
very irritated. He is with a foster in Baltimore. He has separation issues and needs
training.
o Fenway: 2-year-old female from Chesapeake shelter. Her second owner passed
away. She was a private adoption to this owner through us. She had a surgery for
forelimb anomaly when she was 4 months old. Her second owner spayed her. She
needs to have her leg x-rayed to see what the growth plates look like. KP is going to
have Dr. Kable look at her. Will need a volunteer to transport her there.
o Updates on fosters/adoptions:
• Barefoot/Bear: Nothing has changed. Should remain at foster for the remainder of
his life.
• Sampson/Sam: He was adopted
• Fletcher: Doing better. Has follow up x-ray mid February. Will be ready again for
adoption after recovery
• Dunkin: He was adopted.
• Senna: Was adopted.
• We had calls on 2 more potential give-ups in December.
• Cassie will be seen once more at Airpark for a follow up with her skin issues. This
will be covered under the OAR fund. Appointment is for January 2015 with
veterinarian.
• Rescue started off 2014 with 6 rescues still in foster care from 2013.
• This past year of 2014 was an unusual one for rescue. Usually the majority of
rescues are brought into CNC to be fostered. This year we were able to adopt more
out privately. The majority of the dogs had medical issues. In total we handled 28
dogs in 2014.
• 13 Newfs were taken into CNC Rescue. Out of the 13, 4 had to be spayed/neutered,
1 had two eye surgeries and 1 has a bone deformity. A senior male (10) and a
female both had severe skin issues.
• 11 dogs were adopted privately.
• 1 owner found a home for her dog on her own.
• 2 owners kept their dogs after CNC Rescue assisted through the OAR Fund.
• A shelter adopted out 1 dog with our assistance.
• 1 dog went back to the breeder.
• Of the 6 rescues that came in 2013 all were adopted out in 2014.
• We still have 4 of the 13 that were brought in this year. 1 is 10 years old, 1 is the
dog with the leg issue, and 2 came in recently.

We held two events this year to promote rescue and the club. Look for more events in

This was the first year we posted pictures of the rescues up for adoption on our website.
As we are very particular in placing the dogs we do not want people to “shop” for a dog.
The pictures did promote more interest and only a couple of calls specific to a particular
dog.
• Even though a large part of our Rescue Service is collecting applications, placing of
Newfs-in Need with a family that matches their needs, accounting, networking and the
general management of the program, there are many other activities that are performed
with the assistance of club members:
• Fostering dogs
• Transporting dogs
• Behavioral counseling
• Counseling on how to find a good breeder
• Medical issues on Newfs
• General questions on the breed
• Home checks for adopting families
• Assessment on Newfs that are to come into the Rescue Service.
• Advising of Newfs in Need in their areas
• Accepting donations/memorials and writing hand written thank you notes
• This year we added 2 new volunteer positions to assist rescue.
• Records Coordinator – Bob Blaicher: This position assists the Rescue Chair with
handling all documents and expenses pertaining to rescue. Bob is new to CNC but
has a vast knowledge of the breed and also has record keeping experience. Bob and
his wife Anne started helping rescue by transporting dogs.
• Volunteer Coordinator – Peggy Darling: This position assists the Rescue Chair with
promoting volunteer help for rescue and coordinates home visits, transports and
shelter checks. Peggy has been a CNC member for many years and has volunteered
for various club activities and positions.
• I want to thank all of the volunteers for helping Rescue. I am extremely grateful for
those members fostering and transporting dogs throughout the year. Rescue is a
tremendous job and without the help of others it could not be done.
• Discussion on need for Lyme shots (3 yr vaccine) given to rescued Newfs.

Sue Mendleson and Todd Bennett, last year’s planned judges
expressed their willingness to be CNC’s 2015 Draft Test judges.
However, both Mendleson and Bennett are “partner” judges. CNC will
need at least one “mentor” judge to conduct the new Draft Dog Excellent
Test. The advance draft test must be separate from the regular test, but
it can be on the same day. It appears we will need some additional
materials/equipment for the advanced test.

A Little Adieu
This is my last issue as Bear Fare editor.
Six years ago, when I took over this position, I had no idea how rewarding it would be.
Like many CNC members, I am not a breeder and I have never shown a dog.
Watching Water Rescue inspires me, Draft Work fascinates me but, I have never participated
in either. However, I have loved and rescued many Newfs, and I wanted to contribute
something to the breed and this club.
By trying to do that, I discovered an unexpected dividend. Every month, my In-Box has been
filled with marvelous pictures of Newfoundland dogs and their owners---participating in and
doing the most splendid things! Receiving all of your ideas, articles, pictures, tips, recipes,
suggestions and help has been a joy and an inspiration to me. Thank you.
Bringing the newsletter from print to a digital format has been a challenge and an education!
Through it all, Judy Van Dyke Marshall, Jim Wasson, Chuck Basham, Rose Miller and Dotty
Hudson have given me the benefit of their time, patience, advice, guidance and proofreading
skills; I thank them for all they have done. Thanks also, to Brad Cole, who has unfailingly
offered his write-ups and superb pictures of CNC events.
My very best to everyone---it has been a privilege.
