President’s Column

I’m writing this column as I travel to the National in Carlisle, PA. We
missed last year’s show for the first time in ten years so it is good to be
back. No matter how many times I have been to this event (including the
one NCNC hosted in 2004), I am always amazed at the sheer quantity of
lovely Newfs, the camaraderie of shared interests in the breed and of
course the shopping! Just seeing all the different Newf-mobiles with personalized plates, decals, and sayings makes the trip worthwhile. Good luck
to all exhibitors and I am hoping NCNC’s members fare especially well this
week. We have a strong contingent that I have seen already or who we
knew were en route. Many club members and especially Tara Bertrand contributed to the NCNC basket that
will be raffled off during the week. Here’s a photo of the outstanding effort put together.
Since my last column, our club hosted two outstanding events. Cissy Sullivan along with many helpers and
mentors put together an outstanding Education Day on March 18 for beginning draft work with our Newfs.
Gerry Heinz and John Jackman gave an overview and demonstration with Flip and his beautiful cart, then the
attendees were asked to get hands-on with an opportunity to harness up and if the dogs were willing to hitch
up to one of the dozen or more carts that members had brought for the day. It was a wonderfully cooperative
event with an Irish flavor (day after St. Patrick’s Day) with scones and treats contributed by club members. It
is delightful to see the excitement of beginners starting to feel the thrill of cooperative effort with their working
dogs. None of us were born knowing how to do this and part of our responsibility of a club is to help
Newfoundland dog owners realize the potential of their working dogs. I really felt proud and happy for all
participants who had a chance to be a part of this event. The pictures posted on our NCNC Facebook page
show what a fun time we had.
We also hosted a two day regional - John Jackman and Sharon Nummer once again put together a wonderful
event. Even though the second day fell on Easter Sunday, we had strong entries and the results are posted
on Facebook and our website as well as in this newsletter. John and Sharon’s strong leadership pulled
together all the right talents from sponsoring trophies to handing out ring favors, an outstanding silent auction
and the brown bag raffle topped off with the chain saw Newf sculpture won by Ted Meeker. I won’t even try to
name all the helping hands that contributed but I received so many nice compliments on the regional, I know
it took dozens of us to make all the tasks complete. Congratulations to our winners and everyone who
enjoyed a fun weekend with nice, cool weather (surprise!) for our dogs and owners.
Coming up we have our picnic, annual election and general membership meeting in June. John Mertens reports he has the planning well in
hand but I know there are always extra hands needed the day of any
event. Please come early and stay late to help pull together another
fun day with friends and dogs. With our election of officers, we will be
saying goodbye to two long time board members – Kathy Van Wie and
Linda Larson. But just because they’re rotating off the board, doesn’t
mean we don’t need their skills in other areas.

attendance. The picture should be only of the dog without people or an
identifiable background. A puppy photo or silly pose would be great.

President’s Column (continued) many years in keeping the club focused on our members and dogs.
For sure Linda is taking on new responsibility as Water Test Chair and Water Seminar Chair. If you want to
learn the basics of water work with your Newf or want to start getting those pesky exercises under
control for a water test this year, be sure to sign up for our Water Seminar. The event is being held in
Pleasant Prairie, WI in the same general area as our water test. It is a great way to learn more about
water work possibilities and just have fun playing in the water with our furry friends. These seminars
usually fill up quickly so reserve your space with Linda today!
During our summer and fall events, we will be selling raffle tickets for a very special Dannyquest sculpture
called “Mine.” This item was donated to the club by the NCA and we will split the proceeds of our raffle
sales between the NCA Charitable Trust and NCNC. So please be sure to get your tickets at the picnic,
water seminar or water test! It’s all for a good cause and you may end up being the winner.
At our last board meetings, we have formed a committee to review NCNC by-laws headed by John
Mertens and Russ Nummer. We need to do this every few years to make sure that our operating procedures are in line with current needs of the club. If you have any questions or comments, please let John
or Russ know. It takes a while to go through this process as the NCA must approve any changes first and
then club members vote on the changes.
I’m off to enjoy the next few days here in Carlisle – soaking up seeing hundreds of Newfs in one location. It
is good for my soul, for sure. Hope to see you if you’re here, at the picnic or water seminar.

This seminar will focus on the Junior and Senior Division exercises.
Items to bring: Water shoes, life jacket, water training equipment you have
for your Newf. (Equipment will be available to borrow), dog treats, lawn
chair, sack lunch or a box lunch will be available to order the day of the
seminar. Pop and water provided by NCNC. Also bring a copy of the NCA
water test Rules and Regs (available on-line) and possibly a highlighter.
Tents will be provided for shade.

Basic Draft began the morning of March 18, 2012 at
Happy Tails Ranch in Island Lake Illinois. There
were 39 people in attendance counting our presenter
Gerry Heinz. Each participant was given a packet of
information to take home with them as reference
material. The presentation was a great one with John
Jackman and other members contributing to the
input. Many members were generous of their time
and brought their equipment and supplies in order
that the participants could experience first hand the items needed to get started with
Drafting. There were great demonstrations by Gerry and Flip with advice, tips and
suggestions. The participants had many questions that were met with answers from
many of our experienced members.

When the discussion part of the seminar was finished, the mentors who volunteered
paired up with a participant and gave one-on-one help in harnessing and even hitching
some of the dogs. Judy Heinz stepped in and held a puppy class with the younger
dogs. Judy demonstrated some techniques to be used with puppies getting them to
understand basic commands.
The seminar has received great reviews from those in attendance. The Facebook page
had some posts regarding it and I have received two responses by mail thanking NCNC
for offering this opportunity and suggesting that another level be offered in the future.
This suggestion was spoken about during the seminar as well.

previous year. The first award for any Newf is a plaque engraved with the Newf's name and a
bar with the Newf's title and date earned which hangs for the plaque; thereafter, the award is an
engraved bar(s) only. Members are asked to contribute $20 for a plaque and $4 for a bar.
