From The Editor’s Desk
April, what a month that was. Coming right off the Annual Show in late
March, April brought us the auction and then a beautiful day for creek stomping.
What a great month. You will find information about the auction in this issue and
photos from the creek stomp at the May meeting and on our Facebook page.
Marti spent some time trolling the internet and found us some great events
happening later this spring in the area. Check out the What’s Happening pages in
this issue. As always, we encourage everyone to car pool. If you are having Kingfish withdrawal, you can catch up with him in Chicago over the Memorial Day
Weekend. At the GCCA Cichlid Classic.
Then I just want to say out loud, “Have you seen the great fish and plants
showing up at the meeting auctions!” Zowie! Just the opportunity to have access to
these fish is worth the EIAA membership. Kudos to the folks in EIAA who are
breeding these wonderful species(s). And please read Pete & Beth LaFrentz’s BAP
article about breeding the Diapteron cyannostyctum Makokkov.

EIAA Meeting Minutes

President Lee VanHyfte called the meeting to order at
7:12 p.m. Present: 19 members.
Announcements:
* There will be a Darter Hunt in May 2016, in
Minneapolis, MN- contact Ken Glackin for info.
* Dick VanHyfte attended the Great Plains Aquatic
Convention in Omaha, NE. Dick enjoyed the
freshwater talks by Louis Lavaro and Ted Judy
(Pelvicachromis). He noted that most of the talks
were about saltwater aspects of the hobby.
Program: How to prepare for the Creek Stomp on April
23. Speaker: Ken Glackin. Ken brought several items
necessary for Creek Stomping and explained how to use
them. Equipment for collecting: Chest waders, water
shoes or old tennis shoes. A seine : 10 ft long, weighted
net with floats and two poles. Dip net. Air pump with air
stone, air line tubing and batteries. Amquel. Ask
yourself why you are taking fish home...to watch or to
breed. If you are watching, only take the males so that
the females are free to reproduce. Know what kind of
fish you are looking for...google the fish and/or go to the
DNR website to make sure it’s not endangered or
threatened. Obtain an Iowa fishing license if you plan to
take any fish home. Check to make sure if you need a
hook and line or net to catch the fish. Have a tank ready
at home to put the fish in after you collect them. Will
your fish be in deep, still water; shallow and fast or in
riffles. Ken highly recommends that you have a copy of
Peterson’s Field Guide to North American Fish (book)
for reference on the collecting trip. On the trip, you do
not have to collect, you may also snorkel, do fish
photography or just watch. Watch out for “the leaves of
three” (poison ivy), barbed wire fences, thorns, etc.
Excellent presentation.

went home with an $11.00 check.
Raffle: Lots of nice items in our raffle, donated by
our manufacturer sponsors, including: Several
containers of fish food, a small underwater pump,
Stress Coat, Gift certificate from Glad for plastic
containers, and more.

EIAA Spring Auction Results
We had a great turnout !
Our Auctioneer, Chad Shepard was fantastic, as usual !!
We began the auction at 10:00 a.m. Last item was sold at approximately 5:30 p.m. We cleaned up and then locked the doors at 6:00 p.m.
Auction lasted approx. 7 1/2 hours.
Total number of items sold: _647 in 7.5 hours = _86.26_ items/ hour
(_1.437_ items/minute) That is why we pay Chad the big bucks.
Our gross income was $6832
Our gross auction sales were $_6663_
Our expenses were about $ _1000 not all expenses are in.
(Includes, postage, post cards, venue rent, auctioneer, food, paper, labels, posters, publicity, etc.)
Our pay out to sellers $_4459.2_
Our total profit was about $_1400
Average Price per item sold: $_10.29 Chad also helps make this happen
We had _7_ new sellers
We had _30_ returning sellers

Thank you to all members who helped. We couldn’t do it without you!
Mike Sindelar, Tom Van Zante and Don Matheny: coordinating the
items brought up from the ten tables; Jeremy Farmer and Dana Sindelar:
on the computer; Carol Sindelar, Dana Sindelar, Beth LaFrentz and Jo
Meade: at the front table writing up the buyer slips. Tom Van Zante,
Dennis Sindelar, Joe Norte and Scott Wiersema were all multitasking:
Runners, helping in the kitchen when the pizza arrived. Dennis was the
relief auctioneer, too. Tom Van Zante and Jo Meade took turns at being the “fish name pronouncer”. Ken Rusicka did a great job running
the kitchen and has lots of suggestions that we will use at the next auction. Several buyers and their children volunteered to be runners! Special shout out to Alexander Fenoglio who checked in with us at the Fish
Show to make sure we knew he decided he was old enough and wanted
to run. He did a great job. Gerry Kuhl, Lee VanHyfte and Dick Van
Hyfte were active volunteers, too. And thanks to anyone I have failed
to mention...all of you and your working contributions to the auction are
greatly appreciated. Carol Sindelar gets a big special thank you for auditing all the auction slips after the auction and risking writer’s cramp
while writing all the seller checks.

by Ron Coleman. Ron writes that 110 known
species of haplochromine cichlids from the sublitoral zone in Lake Victoria formerly existed.
The predatory Nile perch was introduced and by
1987 100 species had vanished. Then Ron
launches into an informative explanation of how
cichlids have been hailed for their highly evolved,
specialized jaws. Interesting reading.

* Breeding the Dwarf Betta - Betta Persephone, by

water to spawn in. Mike writes of his success in

protein content of frozen food cubes from 5 different companies (Omega One, San Francisco Bay,

GCCA's Annual Cichlid Classic is a fun
cichlid-themed weekend for everyone. This
is a great opportunity to learn more about
the hobby, buy and sell fish, and have a
great time with fellow hobbyists.
What is the GCCA Classic?
* Speakers from across the country with
a full day of presentations
* A fish show where breeders and hobbyist display their favorite and best fish
(and often sell them at the end of the
show)
* It is raffle where over a $$$$ of goods
will be raffled and auctioned away
* It is a social event with a dinner party
(banquet) and hospitality suite
* It is a place to buy fish and supplies
from vendors
* It is where over hundreds of fish books
are for sale
* It is where vendors will be displaying
their latest products
* It is where people put fish for sale up
on bulletin board (typically people
from other clubs)
* It is a huge cichlid auction on Sunday
* It is for newbie's and cichlid nuts a like
* It attracts people across the Midwest
