Thank you for supporting the Senior Games
The outstanding success of the 25th Annual Senior Games held at Peters Township High School on June 14, and the Victory
Celebration and Awards Banquet on June 23 held at the DoubleTree by Hilton, Meadowlands, was due to the cooperative efforts of many
people and many organizations. We want to thank everyone who generously donated their time and talent to make each event a great
success. Special thanks to the Washington County Board of Commissioners, and to Aging Services of Washington County for
joining the Area Agency on Aging in coordinating this year’s health and wellness events for older adults of Washington, Fayette and
Greene Counties. We also extend special thanks to the Washington County Senior Games Task Force, the Southwestern Pennsylvania
Area Agency on Aging Special Activities Committee and the following sponsors and friends for their commitment to older adults in
southwestern Pennsylvania. (More on the Senior Games and Banquet will appear in the August Senior Times.)

the skydiving exhibition offered
the perfect level of drama—all
before the speaker, Karen
Bennett, president of the Southwestern PA Area Agency on
Aging announced “Let the

The events welcomed several
new faces including gold medal
winners Joe Mancinelli of
Monongahela, Charles Pannier,
Finleyville, David Hvizdos,
McMurray, John Williams,

been around for many years that
won gold medal recognition, such
as Mary Semonick, Republic,
Carol Myers, Uniontown, Peggy
Savadeck, Monongahela, John

When we are having a heat wave
Under normal conditions, the
body’s internal thermostat produces perspiration that evaporates and cools the body when
the weather is hot. However, in
extreme heat and high humidity,
evaporation is slowed and the
body must work extra hard to
maintain a normal temperature.
Elderly people, young children,
and those who are sick or overweight are more likely to become
victims of extreme heat.
The duration of excessive
heat plays an important role in
how people are affected by a heat
wave. Older adults who do not
have air conditioned homes
should take advantage of air conditioned senior centers, etc.
Spending at least two hours per
day in air conditioning significantly
cuts down on the number of heatrelated illnesses.
Watch for signs of heatrelated problems:
• Heat exhaustion: Cool,
moist, pale, or flushed skin;
heavy sweating; headache;
nausea or vomiting; dizziness;
and exhaustion. Body temperature may be normal, or is likely
to be rising.
• Heat stroke: Hot, red skin;
changes in consciousness;
rapid, weak pulse; and rapid,
shallow breathing. Body temperature can be very high -sometimes as high as 105 degrees F.
If the person was sweating from
heavy work or exercise, skin may
be wet; otherwise, it will feel dry.
How to Treat a
Heat Emergency
Call 9-1-1
• Heat stroke: Heat stroke is
a life-threatening situation.
Help is needed fast. Call 9-1-1
or your local emergency number.
Move the person to a cooler
place. Cool the body. Watch for
signals of breathing problems.
• Heat cramps: Get the person
to a cooler place and have him
or her rest in a comfortable position. Lightly stretch the affected
muscle and replenish fluids. Do
not give liquids with alcohol or
caffeine in them.
• Heat exhaustion: Get the person out of the heat and into a
cooler place. Remove or loosen
tight clothing and apply cool, wet
cloths, such as towels or sheets.
Give cool water to drink. Make
sure the person drinks slowly.
What to Do During
Extreme Heat
• Slow down. Avoid strenuous
activity. Reduce, eliminate or
reschedule strenuous activities.
High-risk individuals should stay
in cool places. Get plenty of rest
to allow your natural “cooling
system” to work.
• Avoid too much sunshine.
Sunburn slows the skin’s ability
to cool itself. The sun will also
heat the inner core of your body,
resulting in dehydration. Use a
sunscreen lotion with a high sun
protection factor (SPF) rating.
• Postpone outdoor games
and activities.
• Avoid extreme temperature
changes.
• Stay indoors as much as possible. If air conditioning is not
available, stay on the lowest floor,
out of the sunshine.
• Keep heat outside and cool
air inside.
• Conserve electricity not
needed to keep you cool. During periods of extreme heat,
people tend to use a lot more
power for air conditioning.
• Vacuum air conditioner filters weekly during periods of
high use. Air conditioner filters
can become clogged or filled with
dirt, making them less efficient.
• If your home does not have
air conditioning, go to a public building with air conditioning each day for several hours.
Air conditioned locations are the
safest places during extreme heat
because electric fans do not cool
the air. Fans help sweat evaporate, giving a cooling effect.

• Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing
that will cover as much skin
as possible.
• Protect face and head by
wearing a wide-brimmed hat.
• Drink plenty of water regularly and often, even if you do
not feel thirsty.
• Take frequent breaks if you
must work outdoors.
• Use a buddy system when
working in extreme heat.
• Avoid drinks with alcohol or
caffeine in them.
• Eat small meals and eat
more often. Large, heavy meals
are more difficult to digest and
cause your body to increase internal heat to aid digestion, worsening overall conditions. Avoid
foods that are high in protein,
such as meats and nuts, which
increase metabolic heat.
• Avoid using salt tablets unless directed to do so by a
physician. Salt causes the body
to retain fluids, resulting in swelling. Salt affects areas of your
body that help you sweat, which
would keep you cool. Persons on
salt-restrictive diets should check
with a physician before increasing salt intake.
• NEVER leave children, pets
or compromised adults alone
in closed vehicles. Temperatures inside a closed vehicle can
reach over 140 degrees F within
minutes. Exposure to such high
temperatures can kill in minutes.

Mediterranean Diet Protects the Brain
A Mediterranean diet emphasizes fruits,
vegetables, fish, olive oil, whole grains, moderate
wine intake and lower meat consumption. An
ongoing study found that eating a Mediterranean
diet may help protect your brain as you age. The
study tested 4,000 adults aged 65 and older to
examine their cognitive skills every 3 years for 15
years. The participants who scored the highest in
adhering to the Mediterranean diet were the least
likely to experience cognitive decline. The study’s
authors also stressed that physical activity plays an
important role in maintaining cognitive skills.

Department of Aging seeks
help to curb elder abuse
During a recent Capitol event
to recognize Elder Abuse Awareness, Secretary of Aging Brian
Duke urged all Pennsylvanians to
help protect older adults from
abuse, saying reports of such
cases continue to rise.
“If you become a victim of
elder abuse, we are here to help,”
Duke said during an event at the
state Capitol to recognize Elder
Abuse Awareness Day. “From
2009 to 2010, more than 15,000
cases were reported to us and investigated. We determined 3,900
people were in need of protective services. Sadly, the numbers
continue to grow.”
Many of the reports involved
neglect, financial exploitation and
emotional abuse.
Lt. Governor Jim Cawley presented a proclamation on behalf
of Governor Tom Corbett to Bill
Ryan, vice chair of the Pennsylvania Council on Aging which
declared June 15 as Elder Abuse
Awareness Day in Pennsylvania.
“Older Pennsylvanians should
never be victims of abuse,” said
Cawley. “Through the efforts of
the Department of Aging, the
Area Agencies on Aging (AAA)
and community partners, they are
protected from abuse through the
Older Adult Protective Services
Program.”
Anyone who believes an
older adult is being abused, neglected, exploited or abandoned
can contact the Department of
Aging’s elder abuse hotline at 1800-490-8505. All calls are confidential. In Fayette, Greene and
Washington Counties concerned
individuals may also contact the
Southwestern Pennsylvania
AAA Protective Services at 1800-537-2424. Other Pennsylvania counties may also contact
their local Area Agency on Aging, listed in the government section of local phone directories.
The Department of Aging
partners with Temple University’s
Department of Aging Institute to
provide supportive training resources and expert consultation
to the AAAs, law enforcement
and prosecutors. Additionally, Elder Abuse Task Forces have
been established throughout the
state to provide a credible link
between protective service providers and law enforcement.

handprint. Historians speculate
that it’s the result of the
document’s being rolled up for

On July 4, Americans celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The
Declaration was officially
adopted by the Continental Congress in Philadelphia on July 4,
1776, although Congress formally
declared independence from
Great Britain on July 2, and the
Declaration wasn’t signed by all
56 members until August.
Some other facts about the
founding document of the United
States that you may not know:
• There’s a message on the back.
No, it’s not an invisible treasure
map (as in the Nicholas Cage
movie National Treasure). The
words “Original Declaration of
Independence, dated 4th July
1776” appear on the reverse side
of the document on display in the
National Rotunda, at the bottom
and upside down.
• About 200 copies of the Declaration were immediately produced by printer John Dunlap for
distribution through the 13 colonies. Of these original “Dunlap
broadsides,” 26 still exist.

Property Tax/Rent Rebate
deadline extended
The deadline to apply for
Pennsylvania’s Property Tax/
Rent Rebate Program for older
adults and residents with disabilities has been extended from
June 30 to Dec. 31.
“Property tax and rent rebates, combined with general
property tax relief from slots
gaming, provide significant support to older Pennsylvanians and
residents with disabilities,” said
Secretary of Revenue Daniel
Meuser. “Governor Corbett is
extending the rebate program
deadline because he wants to be
sure everyone who is eligible has
time to apply for the tax relief
they’re owed.”
The rebate program benefits
eligible Pennsylvanians age 65
and older; widows and widowers age 50 and older; and people
with disabilities age 18 and older.
The income limit is $35,000 a
year for homeowners and
$15,000 annually for renters,
and half of Social Security income is excluded.
The maximum standard rebate is $650, but supplemental
rebates for qualifying
homeowners can boost rebates
to $975.
As of May 27, the Revenue
Department had received more
than 532,000 rebate applications. More than 600,000 older
Pennsylvanians and residents
with disabilities are expected to
benefit from the program this
year.
As specified by law, rebates
will begin to be distributed on
July 1. After June 30, rebates will
be distributed as claims are received and processed.
Applicants may obtain Property Tax/Rent Rebate claim
forms (PA-1000) and related information
online
at
www.revenue.state.pa.us or by
calling, toll-free, 1-888-2229190. Forms and assistance also
are available at Department of
Revenue district offices (listed in
the government section of phone
directories), local Area Agencies
on Aging, senior centers and
state legislators’ offices.
Claimants who already applied for Property Tax/Rent Rebates may check the status of
claims
online
at
www.revenue.state.pa.us or by
calling, toll-free, 1-888PATAXES.
The Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program is one of five programs supported by the Pennsylvania Lottery. Since the
program’s 1971 inception, older
and disabled adults have received more than $4.8 billion
worth of property tax and rent
relief. The expanded portion of
the rebate program is paid for
with revenue from slots
gaming.ˆ
