Picture Book Beltz & Gelberg 1
Just be brave –
and see what happens on the next step …
Is there a child who doesn’t know the fear of
darkness, of the unknown, and above all, of
being alone? All that lurks in the basement,
yet it exerts a great attraction. Young and old
readers peer curiously as they go down and
see the children overcoming all the dangers
step by step. And in the process, Isabel Pin not
only shows great empathy, but also a great
sense for situational comedy. In the end, the
brave young spirits have a basement party
with lemonade and jam and play with the
mice…..
✹ A sensitive and light-hearted story to encourage
children to be brave in facing their fear of darkness
✹ Cut-in steps make the reader curious and tempt
him to go on turning pages

»I‘m flying!«, cries
Mole in excitement
© Oliver Scherz
The little mole doesn’t want to accept that moles cannot fly. His
yearning is so great that he somehow finally manages to fly – thanks
to his imagination. Eva Muggenthaler has created a fantastic adventure out of it and draws the wind and the happy Earth Bird in a way
never seen before.
Oliver Scherz, born in 1974, studied
acting at the College of Music and
Drama in Leipzig. He is a film editor,
director and actor in both movies
and television and a children’s book
author as well. He lives with his family

Eva Muggenthaler, born in 1971,
studied illustration and graphic
design at the University of Applied
Sciences for Design in Hamburg
and lives with her family in North
Friesland. She achieved fame with
her Hirbel illustrations and published
numerous picture books. Der weiße
und der schwarze Bär / The White and
the Black Bear was nominated for the
German Youth Literature prize.
Mole asks all the animals that he meets how flying works. He asks the
rooster and the flies. »Why do you want to do what you can’t do?« asks
the cow, for whom it’s a miracle enough that she eats up front and produces cow pats in back. The owl, however, knows that moles can hear
very well and suggests using his ears to fly! And the Earth Bird flies and
smells the wind and the great big world beyond!
»Do you hear the wind as it wafts through the grass? Do you hear
the rustling in the leaves and the whistling between the branches?«

»The ones who remain
are those who have lost
someone. Forever!«
© Michael Rahn
A sad, beautiful and very special picture book that speaks of death
and the accompanying sense of grieving in the most poetic terms.
It describes the speechlessness of those around little Egon when his
father passes away.
Kai Lüftner, born in 1975, studied
Social Pedagogy, and has worked as
a streetworker, pizza delivery driver,
doorman, creator of advertising texts
and songs, comedy author and musician. Currently he mainly produces
audiobooks and writes children’s stories. He lives with his family in Berlin.
Egon’s father will never come back. He is gone. Forever. There are no
pills to take against that »forever«. It will never be the way it was, says
his mother. But life will go on.
But why are people suddenly behaving so strangely? There are the
whisperers, who always say, »The poor child« and then there are those
who grin. And then there’s the army of speechless ones. Most of them
are like that. It is difficult to talk about it, yet it is so simple: Papa is
never coming back.
Katja Gehrmann, born in 1968,
studied illustration in Mexico, Spain
and at the Unversity of Applied
Sciences in Hamburg. She teaches in
a Chilren’s Art School and has already
published many pictures books such
as Flaschenpost. She received the
Troisdorfer Picture Book Scholarship
for Gans der Bär. She recently illustrated Der Ritter ohne Socken Moritz

Discover the world in
hidden-object pictures
There is so much to discover and explore when the
little Bear and the little Tiger go on a picnic with
their friends, play soccer or help the firemen. There
are loads of things that are familiar and, at the
same time, just as many that have never been seen
before. Janosch’s wonderful world with its strange
figures encourages even the youngest to enjoy creating and narrating stories.
»Not only children, but also parents and grandparents succumb to the charms of these creatures,
who are just as bizarre as they are lifelike. Even the
animals among them have human qualities.«

Where do we come from? Why do we live here of all places?
An unusual picture book about our own roots. A family story that
begins with emigration in the 19th century, and ends as a journey
to Germany in 2013. A search for the old and new homeland.
Gerda Raidt, born in 1975, studied
graphic design in Halle and illustration
at the HGB Leipzig, where she was a
master-class student under Volker
Pfueller. Since 2004 she has been working as an illustrator and has already

In the middle of the 19th century, a young family leaves its poor village
in search of a better life in America. Their adventure-filled journey from
Hamburg takes them across the Atlantic to New Orleans. They travel
by steam ship, train and in covered wagons deep into the endless, wide
spaces of Nebraska. Starting with nothing, but with absolute faith in a
better life, they start a small farm and struggle to achieve a modest level
of prosperity.
This new world looks quite different approximately 125 years later. The
quiet little homestead has turned into a giant, highly modern farm. And
once again, it is a young family that asks itself, »Where are we from?«
The exciting search for family roots leads them to travel to the old
homeland – to Hamburg, to their great grandparent’s village, to the place
where it all began.

hardly ever get to use their special skills. What can be
done? Emily, John and Taylor secretly place an advertisement in which they suggest developing a training center

the game has taken control and runs itself. It decides

About the power of narration and the imagination –
Mirjam is 13 and tells her 80-year-old grandfather about false (Facebook) friends and about
the resulting move to a new school. She warns
him not to interfere in her affairs. Grandpa replies – sometimes not at once – how difficult it
is to remember things and describes how hard
it was for him back then, after the war, to find
the right friends. He encourages and advises
her on how to deal with fears and with one’s
parents, and assures her that the guest bed will
always be ready for her should she need it.
Mirjam learns from him what it is like when
one becomes unsteady and has the feeling that
everything one does is perhaps for the last
time. One day Grandpa doesn’t write back to
Mirjam. Never again. But Mrjam continues to

Mirjam Pressler’s great new novel is an unusually sensitive and intense story of two,
very different, sisters. Only now, years after
Marie’s disappearance, does Anne dare to
face up to the family’s memories and secrets.
She wants to know, at long last, what really
happened back then. However, there’s a lot
that isn’t quite as it seems.
Anne was 15 when her elder sister, Marie,
disappeared without a trace. That was seven
years ago. Was it really without a trace? Marie
is strangely present in Anne’s memory. She was
always the one who got everything she wanted.
She was too beautiful, too special, too strongwilled. Now that she is a student, Anne finally
wants to step out of Marie’s long shadow. But
can she trust her own memories at all? All that
Anne knows is that it’s finally time for Marie
to disappear – forever! The surprising ending
throws new light on the two sisters and their
childhood, which was by no means a paradise.
It also sheds light on the parents and the rosary
Grandmother, who always said, »He who laughs
in the morning and sings in the afternoon, will
jump into hell in the evening.«

Martin Baltscheit’s rebellious coming-of-age novel about love without limits, a dead girl and a hero in search of truth.
Martin Baltscheit was born in
Duesseldorf in 1965. He studied
Communications Design at the
Folkwangschule, Essen. Thereafter,
he worked as a cartoonist, illustrator,

Ferdinand is young, careless and popular – the hero of a herd of sheep.
Nobody sings as beautifully as he does. But Ferdinand also loves jumping
over fences, which no good sheep would ever do. One day he is found
with his dead girl friend beside him, her throat bitten through. But
Ferdinand has lost his memory! Ferdinand must now learn that he is
really a wolf. When his family fled to the better woods, he was the only
one to survive and had been raised by sheep. Where does he belong?
A painful search for his own true identity begins …
This is an explosive novel about roots and what they mean, about the
fear of all that’s foreign that lurks, above all, within each of us, and
ultimately about growing up. A wonderful book by the master of all
tales, Martin Baltscheit.
»It doesn’t really matter where you’re from.
What counts is where you are going and with
whom.«
With this final sentence at the end of the
book/story, Martin Baltscheit provides an important impetus to young people. It can also
be seen as a timely comment on the debate
raging around immigration and integration in
Germany and Europe. From the jury’s explanation on the awarding of the German Youth
Drama Prize 2010

What is it like
to be a girl ?
© Stefanie Rau
Girls love pink and like boys … For all the girls who expect more from
being a girl – this is the book for you!
Each girl is different. Some enjoy ballet; others prefer to ride their BMX
bikes. Some girls love boys; others prefer girls. »Invent yourself!« encourages girls to develop their own identity. The book provides ideas and, at
the same time, it urges girls to look carefully, to ask questions, and to try
out identities and other ways of life, to talk to their girl friends … and,
last but not least, to enjoy inventing themselves.
A real do-it-yourself book for being a girl.
Sonja Eismann, born in 1973,
loved making things herself in her
childhood. Her motto was to be as
fast as possible. Instead of macramé
hanging baskets, she would have
preferred to have trendier instructions. Today she works as an author
and university instructor.
Chris Koever, born in 1979, liked
to surf the internet at an early age,
so it was only logical to end up at
De: Bug and then at Zeit Online.
She loves things that puff up in the
oven and bakes huge quantities of
muffins. She works as a freelance
journalist and speaker on the subject of gender and language.
Daniela Burger, born in 1969,
had at one time equipped her
entire school class with self-made
accessories. However, she decided
not to pursue a career devoted
to handicrafts. She works as a
self-employed graphic designer in
Berlin.
