President’s Message
Happy New Year! May this year bring you
health, happiness and perhaps a new treasure or two
for your collections.
As I write this, a possible terrorist attack has
taken place in my city with multiple deaths. This
is a truly sad time for the victims, their friends and
family. I received text messages and phone calls
from collectors from the US and Philippines. Rory
and I are safe and the incident occurred several
miles from our home. We appreciate your concern
for our wellbeing.
Last month we talked about having our 45th
annual convention in Atlanta. Unfortunately, we
were unable to find a suitable location that would
accommodate our site visit requirements. We did
reach out to the Atlanta Visitors and Convention
Bureau as well as the larger hotels that could
provide the needed rooms and meeting space. I
am disappointed that we were unable to locate a
convention facility in the area.
We are back to the search. We have received
several proposals from hotels. We are looking
for locations in the Midwest and East. We have
had a good selection of locations and these have
been distributed to the board for the selection
process. The board members will look at the list
and make their choices from the listed properties.
The recommendations of the board members will
be tabulated and we then start negotiating with the
winning property.
During the past few conventions we added
the Kids Club. Elaine Maddox did a great job of
coordinating and planning this set of events and
we have had many supportive comments of praise
for implementing this program. Unfortunately,
Elaine is no longer on the board and none of the
current board members has expressed any interest in
taking over the program. If you have an interest in
coordinating this program, please contact me or any
The Coca-Cola Collectors News
board member. Barring an interested
volunteer, the program will have to
be discontinued.
There are 4 regional events
scheduled in the near future. The
first on the calendar is the Central
Florida Fun Fest. This will be held
in the Orlando area. The second scheduled event
is The Great Get Together which is hosted by the
chapters in the southwest will be held in Ontario,
California in February. Moving to the center of the
country, Tex-Fest will be held in Richardson, Texas
in March. Our largest mini convention, Springtime
in Atlanta is scheduled for the end of March
this year. Forms and information are available
in the newsletter and on our website for these
conventions. Please consider attending one of the
regional events.
The Philippine Chapter was able to have a
commemorative bottle produced for their chapter
and it was distributed to the members at their first
official chapter Christmas party last month. Their
President, Ar Jay Mendoza has been working with
other collector groups in East Asia. Apparently, we
have a group of collectors who have formed a club
in Korea. Ar Jay is encouraging them to join our
organization.
Until next month, Happy Collecting!

You Know You're A Coca-Cola Collector If ..
1) You buy souvenir cups at the event NOT to
remember the event or for the large size but just because
it says Coca-Cola somewhere on them (aka why I own 3
dozen Orioles plastic cups)
2) You eat at restaurants that are one health inspection
away from closing, and recommend them to friends, just
because of their decor.
3) You wander aimlessly with wads of cash into stranger’s
hotel rooms hoping to hand them that money.
4) You use stairways in hotels that have never seen nonemployees before.
5) You walk into a hotel room and immediately start
rearranging the furniture.
6) You show up at a hotel with a 3pm check-in at 9am
and are shocked that your room is not ready.
7) You have discussions with random hotel guests in
elevators.
8) You've been to 25 states and never left the hotel in any
of them.
9) You actually call friends to tell them you've found a
newly installed Freestyle machine.
10) You slow your car down and even make a U turn
when you see a rusted piece of red metal on someone's
front porch.
11) Your non-Coke vacation photos always include
something Coca-Cola that you found and took a picture
of.
12) You know everything about what a fellow collector
collects, but have no idea what his name is.
13) You'll drive 3 hours to an auction with one Coke
item in it, yet you'll ignore that
same item when it's in a 400 item Coca-Cola auction.
page 4
Submitted by Bill Combs
14) You support or root against sports teams depending
on the signage on their scoreboards.
15) You carefully examine bottles or cans bought to
drink before you open them.
16) As an adult with zero kids you regularly visit Toysr-Us.
17) You don't know all of the words to songs at church
or the Star Spangled Banner but you can sing "Things
Go Better With Coke" or "I'd Like To Teach The World
To Sing" at full volume.
18) You have no idea what a Pittsburgh Steeler is but
know who Mean Joe Green is.
19) You have Christmas items on display in your home
year round, and you're Jewish.
20) You ask the cashier at Walmart if they can "do any
better" on the Coca-Cola cookie jar in the housewares
section.
21) You've actually considered naming one of your
children Asa or a pet "Sprite"
22) You've invited someone into your home who has
asked "Do you work for Coke?"
23) Friends and family think they are both original and
funny when asking for a Pepsi when they visit. They're
not.
24) You've mastered the big smile and "thank you"
when someone gives you a rusted 70's $5 tray and
thinks they've found the Mona Lisa of Coca-Cola
collecting.
25) You hit the pause button to point out a
Coca-Cola item in a TV show or movie and then
explain to everyone in the room that it was NOT time
period correct.

Atlanta Chapter
by Garry Free
and Sally Vandivort
The Atlanta Chapter celebrated their 41st birthday this year. We have
around 140 primary and associate members. We meet on the 2nd
Thursday of each month at the Smyrna Community Center.
There is a program at each meeting. Many talented,
knowledgeable members present the programs. Some of our
meeting programs have been on Kay Displays, Coke and
advertising bang guns, Cooking with Coke, Real or Repro, and
many, many more!
We are a very active chapter with many activities. Springtime in Atlanta - It is the 2nd
largest convention to the National. It occurs annually the week before Easter at the
Crowne Plaza Ravinia Hotel in Atlanta, GA. There is still time to join us by sending in
the registration form now.
Summer outing- We usually have a summer outing of
some sort. The last couple of years we have attended a
Braves game.
Annual Picnic- Every
October (date varies)
we have our
Club Picnic at
a member’s
home. The
Club provides
the meat and
drinks and members bring side dishes and
desserts. We play games and have plenty of prizes!
Christmas Party- It takes the place of our December meeting. Again the club furnishes
the meat and the members bring side dishes and desserts. We have plenty of food,
fellowship, door prizes and fun! The Club also gives a special gift to each member!
We would love for you to join us at our meetings or one of our events. Contact me or the
chapter at Atlanta Chapter -- Georgia - Garry Free at [email protected]

The Lincoln Memorial
The Lincoln Memorial is an American national
monument to honor the 16th President of the
United States, since the 1930s has been a symbolic
center focused on race relations. It has been the site
of countless major historic and cultural moments —
from Martin Luther King's 'I Have a Dream' speech
to the popular movie 'Forrest Gump.' It contains
inscriptions of two well-known speeches by
Lincoln, The Gettysburg Address and his Second
Inaugural Address.
Vietnam Veterans Memorial
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a 2-acre
national memorial in Washington, DC. It honors
U.S. service members of the U.S. armed forces who
fought in the Vietnam War, service members who

died in service in Vietnam/South East Asia, and
those service members who were unaccounted for
(Missing In Action) during the War.
Its construction and related issues have been the
source of controversies, some of which have
resulted in additions to the memorial complex.
The memorial currently consists of three separate
parts: the Three Servicemen Memorial, the Vietnam
Women's Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans
Memorial Wall, which is the best-known part of the
memorial.
Korean War Memorial
The Korean War Memorial was dedicated on
July 27, 1995. The main memorial is a form of
a triangle intersecting a circle. The walls exhibit
more than 2,500 images of soldiers, equipment,
and people which represent the land, sea, and air
troops who supported those who fought in the war.
When reflected on the wall, there appears to be
38 soldiers, 38 months, and it also represents the
38th parallel the separates North and South Korea.
There are 19 stainless steel statues within the
walled triangle which represent a squad on patrol.
They represent all 4 branches of the armed forcesU.S. Army, Marine Corps, Air Force and Navy.
There is a United Nations wall which list the 22
nations that contributed troops, or medical support.
One further wall bears the message, “Freedom Is Not Free.”
Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial
The national memorial dedicated to Franklin
Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd president of the United
States, lies about half way between the Lincoln
Memorial and the Thomas Jefferson Memorial
in Washington, DC. Its four open-air rooms
represent each of the four terms of office to which
he was elected. A meandering pathway leads past
waterfalls, bronze sculptures, and FDR’s own
powerful words carved on the granite walls. The
memorial honors the memory of one of America’s
great leaders and the optimism and courage that he
shared with his fellow citizens through the ordeals

of the Great Depression and World War II. A statue
of Roosevelt sitting in a wheelchair greets visitors
and reminds them of the man who refused to let
disability stop him.
The White House and surrounding area
This tour will not allow you inside the White
House but will give you a view of the outside and
surrounding buildings.
Next door to the White House is the Eisenhower
Executive Office Building. This now houses many
offices for the current White House staff such
as Secretary of State, Secretaries of the Navy,
Secretaries of War, Office of the Vice President,
even some Presidents have held offices in this
building at times.
To the east of the White House is the U.S. Treasury
building. It is the 3rd oldest federal building in
Washington, D.C. behind the Capitol and the White
House.
Not on tour: Another place to visit in the DC
area: Arlington National Cemetery (What to See
and Do)
Arlington National Cemetery serves as a
cemetery and a memorial to America’s persons
of national importance, including presidents,
Supreme Court justices and countless military
heroes. The Cemetery was established during the
Civil War as a final resting place for Union soldiers
on approximately 200 acres of Mary Custis Lee’s
1,100 acre Arlington estate. The property was
expanded over the years to encompass more than
624 acres of burial grounds of more than 400,000
American servicemen.
Visit Famous Gravesites - Among the notable
Americans buried here are Presidents William
Howard Taft and John F. Kennedy, Jacqueline
Kennedy Onassis, and Robert Kennedy.
See the Monuments and Memorials - Among
dozens of memorials on the property are the Coast
Guard Memorial, the Space Shuttle Challenger
Memorial, Spanish-American War Memorial, the
USS Maine Memorial and many more.

Running with Coca-Cola on my Mind
Since I began serious running in December
2014, I decided to incorporate a little Coca-Cola
red into my rewards for finishing each of my half
marathons: my Coca-Cola bottle tattoo for finishing
my San Diego half marathon in May and my red
hair dye for completing my San Jose half marathon
in September.
As I departed my plane in Las Vegas on my way
to my third and final half marathon of 2015, the
main goal I had in mind for the weekend was to
get a picture with my finisher medal and the CocaCola polar bear. This would be my capstone for
completing one full year of half marathon training.
One of my absolute favorite things to do on
the Strip in Las Vegas is go to the huge Coca-Cola
store; friends and family must always be prepared
to spend a few hours there with me whenever I get
to go. Since I grew up in Arizona, Vegas was only
a 5-hour drive away for us, but this time I flew in
from Sacramento. This meant my visit to one of my
favorite stores would be even more important to me.
Many weeks before my trip, I began my
preparation: I purchased my Coca-Cola Collectors
Club T-shirt, planned out how my picture-perfect
moment would go and continued my half marathon
training that I had been working on since June.
Since I would be completing my third race (a huge
life accomplishment for me), the significance of this
moment would be a tremendous one.
The first thing I saw when I got off my flight was
a 100th anniversary plastic water bottle at a little
airport market, and that made the realization much
more real: I would be running down the strip — at
night — with that giant, gleaming Coca-Cola bottle
in sight. It would
be my beacon
during the race.
The next
day, November
15, was race
day. When my
boyfriend Mark
and I arrived at
the Kid Rock
concert at 2
page 12
Submitted by Lindsay Ivins
p.m. before the race, I was
automatically drawn to
the Coca-Cola sponsored
viewer boxes that were
surrounding the area,
presumably for local events.
So, of course, I had to get
a prerace picture by one of
the displays.
At 4:30 p.m., Mark and
I lined up in our corral to
begin the race. At 4:50 the
horn sounded and we were off! I had never felt
so exhilarated starting a 13.1-mile race while the
night sky was out.
We rounded the "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign
and began to make our way down the Strip. I
warmed up after the first couple miles, so the 38degree weather, ice-cold rain and 25 mph winds
didn’t affect my determination to run the entire
length of the Strip. Once that Coca-Cola bottle was
in view, I pushed myself even harder to prevail
over the poor weather conditions.
The giant bottle definitely was the highlight of
my race, as I knew it would be. I also made it a
goal of mine to hold myself back from going to the
store until the day after the race, so I could get my
picture with my medal and my favorite polar bear.
Because of the extra obstacle that was
the wind, I was
especially sore the next
morning. Regardless
of how I felt, I had
it planned to go to
the Coca-Cola store
first thing. So I did,
and I got my picture
with my medal, my
collectors T-shirt
and my Coca-Cola
polar bear. I consider
that a successful way to end my final race of 2015.
Happy New Year!

Thermometers
Submitted by Kathy Manney
Submitted by Rob Mathison
There was life in Coca-Cola
before the television commercials that
saturate our viewing pleasure. There
have been wide diverse methods
used to advertise. These range from
porcelain signs, to wall clocks, to
trays to name select few.
Thermometers were one example
of “practical” advertising that also
included light fixtures, push and pull
door signs that were produced to place “Coca-Cola”
in prominent places throughout the
store.
The 1920s brought the time when
more thermometers were made and
distributed. Because most retailers
hung them outside, they were made
of metal. Wooden
thermometers from
this time can also
be found. Once the
hobbleskirt started to
become more popular with retailers
and customer, Coca-Cola began
to promote the bottle design in
thermometers too.
Throughout the following years,
Coca-Cola thermometers kept up
with the trends in popular culture. The art deco
design used throughout
the 1940’s we evident
in many of that time
period’s thermometers.
Some are also constructed
like porcelain signs. In
the 1950’s, the classic
red porcelain button
sign became so popular
it became a popular
thermometer.
Many other thermometers can be
identified by the slogan they feature.
No matter the slogan, they can all be recognized by
red and white color scheme.
The Coca-Cola Collectors News
The question was asked, do you have a Santa
Clause collection and how do you display them
year-round?
My husband John and I have a number of
Coca-Cola Santa collectables in our collection,
including all of the National Geographic Sundblom
Santa ads still on the complete magazines, framed,
but no longer wall hung.
We have decorated our guest room with a
Coca-Cola theme, nothing but matted and framed
calendars hang on one wall, Olympics related items
on another wall, mugs on another and then a small
Santa theme wall. The Santa wall includes calendars
and a collection of Santa decorated bells.
John is a talented handyman and applied molding
painted red to the walls for color contrast and to
separate hung items. He built decorative wood
cabinets with plexi-glass fronts for the bells and
mugs that we bought at yard sales. John mats and
frames our growing collection of Coca-Cola ads and
calendars, which include our birth year calendars
-1940 and 1942.
