Maintaining consistent grade level between grade stakes is challenging, even for experienced operators. Machine Control and Guidance systems reduce survey labor requirements and help operators work to the design plan by accurately cutting, filling and reducing material removal/replacement costs. Thompson Tractor and Caterpillar recently held a hands-on Demo Days for AccuGrade Machine Control and Guidance technology. Several employees from Thompson Tractor (Jeff Smith, Blake Smith, Brian Laughlin, Adam Jones and John Freeman (retired)) and Southern Precision (Billy Kirk) removed the topsoil from a hayfield and began the initial earthmoving for a soccer field and running track in Remlap, Alabama. Approximately 125 customers were in attendance from all over Thompson’s sales territory. The machines being demonstrated onsite were two dozers (D6T XW and D6K XL), two motor graders (140M and 140H) and a 330D L excavator. The three-day event displayed the latest in AccuGrade GPS and laser technology on Caterpillar® machines. Both Caterpillar and Southern Precision sent a team of experts to the jobsite to assist in educating the customers about the latest technology available. Southern Precision is the Trimble dealer for Alabama, Georgia and Florida. Contractors were divided into small groups to learn more about the technologies on each machine. The three forms of machine control technologies on display were the AccuGrade GPS, AccuGrade laser and Trimble® UTS systems. The customers were trained on the GPS/Laser infrastructure components, digital site plans and system operations inside the cab. The engineers and construction crews could then operate the machines which had the blade or Please see AccuGrade Demo Days on page 3. Mauldin Paving Products Veterans in the Industry The origins of the Mauldin product date back to post World War II home construction. Hubert Mauldin, (father to Neil and Gene), designed and built a drag box paver for use by his construction company building government specification homes for returning World War II veterans in the late 1940s. This design was eventually sold to Puckett Brothers. After developing a walk-behind roller, Hubert Mauldin formed Mauldin Manufacturing Company in 1962. The Mauldin family successfully built and operated this company for 27 years. In 1989 the company was sold to a textile conglomerate, which with recessionary economic conditions, an aging product and poor management, sent the company into bankruptcy within four years. Neil and Gene Mauldin took the company out of bankruptcy and formed Mauldin Brothers Equipment, Inc. in 1993. One year later the Calder family purchased the company. In 2001 the company was renamed Calder Brothers Corporation, signaling the outside, that this is a family owned and operated business, and plans to keep it that way! The Mauldin brand continues to be used. In 2007 the shares of Pavement Services Inc. were acquired. This acquisition increased the in-house industry experience as well as rounded out the Mauldin product offering. Today the Calder and Thielbar families own Mauldin. Glen Calder is in charge of Operations. Dave Thielbar runs the plant. David Calder is the head of the Research and Development Engineering team. Cameron Calder manages Sales and Marketing for the company with both Ben and Trevor Thielbar. You know you’ve made it in the business world when your construction company’s performance earns you a seat in a White House audience for a speech on business issues by the president. That’s the case with Lynn Carter, who earlier this year attended a week of business-related activities organized by the Small Business Administration (SBA) in Washington, D.C. Carter, owner and president of Southeast Cherokee Construction, received the invitation after being named 2008 Alabama Small Business Person of the Year. The award from the Alabama District of the SBA recognizes outstanding achievement in business and community service. She was nominated by Troy State University’s Small Business Development Center. Southeast Cherokee is headquartered in Wetumpka, Ala., and has offices in Montgomery and Abbeville, Ala. The firm focuses on general and heavy construction and operates in two divisions: The horizontal division handles site work and road grading and paving, while the vertical division oversees building construction. About 60 percent of the company’s business falls into the horizontal division. Broad Applications Carter’s parents founded Southeast Cherokee in 1983. Carter and her brother assumed control of the company in 1987, and she bought his interest in the firm to become sole owner in 1992. In the early years, the work included mostly road construction for the Alabama Department of Transportation. State highway projects remain a part of the company’s business, but Carter expanded Southeast Cherokee’s capabilities and horizons, and a lot of work is now done for military bases and Environmental Protection Agency facilities throughout the Southeast. In addition, Southeast Cherokee has built golf courses, runway expansions, wastewater treatment facilities, solid www.thompsontractor.com (left to right) Thompson Tractor Company Inc., Skip Plumlee/Southern Region Sales Manager; Hardy Traylor/Sales Representative; Southeast Cherokee Construction, Inc., Jerry Carter/ Operations Manager; Lynn Carter/President; Randy Davis/Horizontal Division Operations Manager waste landfills, subdivisions and numerous commercial developments for private-sector clients. The projects include massive earthmoving operations, storm drainage and underground utilities, as well as asphalt and concrete paving. Southeast Cherokee, which started with 12 employees, has grown to as many as 73, though the number fluctuates between peak and off-peak periods. Key Decisions In 1999, the company received the SBA’s 8(a) Business Development program classification along with HubZone and Small Disadvantaged Business certifications. The designations qualified Southeast Cherokee to compete for work set aside for women-and minority-owned businesses and to negotiate for solesource government contracts under $3 million. Working through both competitive bidding and sole-source negotiations, Southeast Cherokee won numerous federal contracts with the Defense Department and the EPA. Carter says the company’s performance on those jobs earned the respect of private developers, leading to additional commercial and industrial contracts. Part of the criteria for winning the Small Business Person of the Year award is a company’s financial performance. Southeast Cherokee’s annual gross revenue has jumped from $500,000 to millions under Carter’s leadership. She says a move to reliable Caterpillar® equipment helps ensure that the increasing gross revenue translates to growing profit. “Downtime resulting from malfunctioning equipment can cost the business more than the price of the mechanical repairs. We don’t have that worry with our Cat machines,” she adds. Southeast Cherokee owns most of its 50 pieces of heavy equipment, and Carter says the company turns over its Cat® machines — including backhoes, dozers, loaders, excavators and motor graders — every three to five years to take advantage of their excellent resale and trade-in value. Another method for avoiding equipment problems and enhancing resale value is having Southeast Cherokee’s Caterpillar dealer, Thompson Tractor Co. of Montgomery, Ala., regularly test oil samples from the Cat equipment. Carter says her company uses the test results to guide equipment maintenance and sale or trade-in decisions. The combination of sales and support provided by Thompson Tractor makes the dealer a good fit for Southeast Cherokee’s team approach to business, Carter says, with Thompson sales and service representative Hardy Traylor providing a vital link. She credits a team approach as a critical success factor at Southeast Cherokee, pointing to the contributions made by everyone from hard-working field crew members to her husband Jerry, the company’s vice president, and the two division managers, Randy Davis and Don Skipper. The Road Show Although winning the 8(a) designation provided opportunities for Southeast Cherokee, it guaranteed nothing. Carter still had to win the bids or walk through the newly opened doors and convince procurement officers and private developers to hire her company. She turned to her industry background, where she learned early how to read building plans and had worked as the company’s project estimator for years. Carter has hired more administrative help for the company office, enabling her to devote more of her time to “persistent marketing, knocking on doors and finding opportunities,” she says. Carter has regularly participated in Troy State University-sponsored sessions that bring together contractors and vendors with government contract administrators. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to sit at a table for oneon-one conversations for 15 minutes,” she says. Carter invests time traveling throughout the region to meet with acquisition officers, giving presentations about Southeast Cherokee’s capabilities and track record. She offers question and answer periods, and asks about upcoming opportunities for her company. She also checks Web sites that provide information about government procurement needs and opportunities. Having attained success in the construction industry, Carter now gives significant time to a widely diverse list of professional and civic organizations, among them the Alabama Indian Affairs Commission, several local Chambers of Commerce, the American Cancer Society, the Alabama Baptist Association, the Alabama Wildlife Association, the Alabama Wild Turkey Association and the National Association of Women in Construction. Mostly, though, Carter remains committed to Southeast Cherokee. “I’m the first one in the office in the morning, and I’m the last one to leave. This business is my passion,” she says. FALL 2008 NEW Cat PartStore coming soon! accugrade demo days from page 1 bucket controlled by one of the three control and guidance systems. The GPS and UTS systems utilize the global positioning satellites, machinemounted components, and an on-site base station to provide the machine operator with real time cut/fill values to complete the job without the use of grade stakes. The laser system uses machinemounted components and an on-site laser transmitter that emits a rotating beam of light which sends a signal to a receiver on the machine that controls the blade position. Each system greatly improves productivity on the job site by automatically controlling the blade lift and tilt. The operator can grade faster and with more accuracy by not having to worry about gradestakes. 3 AccuGrade can increase productivity by up to 50%. GPS technology performs to within 1.5” accuracy. The UTS and laser system performs within 0.25” accuracy, thus reducing guesswork and costly rework by moving dirt right the first time. New Bass Pro Shop in Leeds, Alabama Summit Corporation and Thompson Cat Rental Bring it to Reality Summit Construction Company Field Manager, Kim Worch, and Superintendent, Steve Rusbacky, display their construction skills at the newest Bass Pro Shops location. Just as the sign displayed high above them, the giant retail store prominently faces Interstate 20 in Leeds, Alabama, just off Exit 140. Kim Worch (left) Field Manager with the Summit Group; Steve Rusbacky (right) Superintendant overseeing the construction. Founded by Jim Gassman nearly 15 years ago, Summit Construction’s expertise is in customizing and renovating existing sites with a unique approach to architecture. Summit Construction maintains an average of 750 projects each year, with customers in all 50 states. Recent projects have expanded beyond the United States, including jobs in Puerto Rico and Canada, with upcoming projects located throughout Europe. Bass Pro Shops turned to Summit Construction primarily due to their dedication to excellence and attention to detail. Summit Construction oversees the finest artists in the country on commissioned projects, including the intricate paintings that adorn the walls throughout many of the Bass Pro Shops locations, giving them their signature look. The 190,000 square foot structure is a collaborative project combing the vision of the Bass Pro Shops architects with the supervision of Kim Worch and the team of professionals at Summit Construction. “The owners (of Bass Pro Shop) think in conceptual terms,” says Worch. “Each store is geared towards the location, whether local stone is used for the fireplace in the front of the store or the large fish tank, constructed to resemble one of Alabama’s many fishing holes,” adds Worch. Among other unique attractions throughout the facility is a replica of an old Alabama mine shaft that overlooks the showroom floor. A waterfall, designed to cascade over a sidewalk into a pond, passes overhead as customers walk from one area of the showroom floor to another. Architects for Bass Pro Shops worked with specialty contractors hired by Summit Construction to create the visual and functional masterpieces throughout the store. Creating artificial outdoor scenes required the use of many pieces of equipment, both indoors and out. Concrete “boulders” that border the fish tank were lifted and moved around like giant jigsaw puzzle pieces, to create the look and feel of the Alabama outdoors. Large trees that surround the steel support beams throughout the store were lifted into place multiple boom lifts, requiring hours of careful placement. The construction of the Leeds’ Bass Pro Shop began in May 2008 with a meeting between Summit Construction’s Kim Worch and Thompson Cat Rental Store’s Jason Garrison. “I’ve always dealt with the Cat Rental Stores throughout my career in construction,” says Worch. “When I met with Jason and the folks at the Thompson Cat Rental Store in Birmingham, I was impressed with their professionalism and knowledge of the business,” he adds. As construction began, the size and scope of the retail shop required the use 19 scissor lifts for the various jobs throughout the site. Several telescopic boom lifts were used to assist personnel with roofing as well as piecing together the intricate angles on the facade of the building. Approximately 26 pieces of equipment were rented from the Thompson Cat Rental Store over the span of this project. The working relationship between Summit Construction and the Thompson Cat Rental Store allowed for a continuous workflow, whether servicing equipment on site or delivering new machines to the contractor. “I’m old school,” says Kim Worch. “Quality means something to me, and Thompson proved that quality is something they believe in. From the service technician on-site to the people at the rental store, everyone’s attitude was nothing less than professional, and that means a lot,” adds Worch. The professionalism of Summit Construction, and the relationship with the Thompson Cat Rental Store, extends to the owners of Bass Pro Shops. The owners work hand in hand with the contractors, vendors, and artists to create an environment that is pleasing to each customer. Details such as the Bass Pro Shop’s signature murals, flowing indoor waterfalls, and finally detailed taxidermy are all overseen by the staff of Bass Pro Shops and Summit Construction. The combined efforts of Summit Construction, the Thompson Cat Rental Store and Bass Pro Shops ensure that customers will walk into the newest store and feel as if they are truly experiencing the Alabama outdoors. Customers will no doubt experience the sense of quality and excellence that Summit Construction, the Thompson Cat Rental Store and Bass Pro Shops provide to their customers. Two years ago, Lisa Settembrino (LT Rental Coordinator, Birmingham) received a phone call from Ron Yarbrough. Yarbrough was in charge of the concession stands in Bryant Denny Stadium at the University of Alabama. Ron was in need of a lift truck at for the upcoming football season. Lisa, being a serious Alabama fan, immediately decided to use one of Thompson’s Mitsubishi forklifts that were available from the factory, in of all colors, red. The Mitsubishi factory, located in Houston, may call the color red but there was no doubt that it was Alabama crimson. A week later Lisa received a phone call from Greg Hendrix at Hendrix Ice, and he mentioned seeing the truck that Ron Yarbrough had just taken delivery of. Greg had asked Ron where the lift had come from, and Ron mentioned that there was a new Rental coordinator at Thompson Lift Truck in Birmingham. Ron warned him that Lisa was originally from Boston and she was a “little Yankee” but she’d take good care of you. Greg ended up renting 4 trucks and wanted them all decorated like Yarbrough’s. Today Lisa still rents to Hendrix Ice but this year the University went with a new concession company. The new company, Center Plate, spoke to Ron Yarbrough during the transition period and he told them that there was only one choice when it came time for (L-R) Clayton Lynn (HCL) and Lisa Settembrino(Rental Coordinator, Birmingham) (L-R) Chris Montana (FOX 6), Buddy Vines (VPThompson Lift Truck Co.) and Lisa Settembrino (Rental Coordinator, Birmingham). renting their forklifts. Before the 2008 season kicked off, Lisa inked a deal for seven trucks with Center Plate. The inventory was available and the crew in Birmingham was able to get all 7 units decaled and ready to go. Clayton Lynn, with HCL, was also able to obtain a truck for use at Bryant Denny for the 2008 season. On the day of the delivery, Chris Montana from Fox 6 News in Birmingham came out and interviewed Lisa about the fleet of “Roll Tide” lift trucks. Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE:CAT) and RCR announced June 18 that they had entered into a multi-year partnership for the No. 31 Chevrolet team and Burton. Next season marks Caterpillar’s 17th year of sponsorship involvement in NASCAR. It will also be Richard Childress’ 40th anniversary in the sport. “Brand identity is a key element to the success of the partnership between a sponsor and a race team,” said Richard Childress, president and CEO of Richard Childress Racing. “Caterpillar kept the core of its established and very well-known paint scheme and, at the same time, made it unique to the RCR program by including a Cat product into the overall design.” Burton, a 20-time winner in NSCS competition, is currently third in the 2008 point standings with two wins, seven top-five and 17 top-10 finishes with only 4 races left to go. The No. 31 team has made the Chase for the Championship the past two seasons, finishing seventh in 2006 and eighth last year. “Fans tell us Caterpillar has one of the most recognizable cars in NASCAR,” said Jim Parker, vice president of Caterpillar’s North American Commercial Division. “RCR is one of the most familiar names in racing. Our new design—with Jeff Burton behind the wheel—combines these two distinct brands yet still adds a fresh new look for 2009.” RCR has earned 11 NASCAR championships, including six in the Cup series with the legendary Dale Earnhardt, four in the Nationwide Series and one in the Truck Series.
