PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Hello, I would like to introduce myself, Kent Meidinger,
Edgeley Auto Collision Center. I am honored to be president
of NDABA. Congratulations to the other new officers and
directors.
With spring just about over, summer will be just as fast, I’m
sure. We just finished our last meeting before summer starts.
I would like to thank everybody for the great convention
we had in March. Ed & Bobbie Barnhardt, Verla Rostad, all
the venders, suppliers, speakers, everybody involved. It was
a great convention.
Skills/USA competition had two high school winners and
two post-secondary education winners. Congratulations to
them.
Clyde still needs articles for the magazine. If you find
some articles of interest email them to Clyde for the next
issue coming out in the fall. Again, a thank you to all of our
advertisers of the News Report.
Be sure to check out the website
for information on what is going
on in our industry. Links to our
suppliers, vendors, associated with
our profession, surveys that we will
have are there.
September 8, 2012 at 11:00 am
will be the next meeting in Carrington at the Chieftain. Bring
along another shop owner, technician, wife (“I have to” she’s
the secretary), another member of the association new or old,
ask them to ride along.
With all that, I want to wish you a happy, fun, and safe
summer. See you in the fall.
Thank You.

co-technician of the year award
by the ND Auto Body Association
at their annual convention. Steve
received his award at the annual
convention held at the Holiday Inn
in Minot on March 22 & 23, 2012.
The Association’s board of
directors voted, choosing that
person whom they believe has
contributed greatly to the auto body
profession. They try to choose a
person who lives in the area where
the convention is being held. This
year being an exception in that two
technicians were chosen.
Steve lives in Fessenden. He
graduated from Fessenden High
School and earned an associate
degree in Auto Body at NDSSS.
Steve began his career at
Krabbenhoft Chevrolet in
Northwood for a couple of years,
then to Auto Town Wrecking in
Carrington for a couple more. Then
he owned and operated Steve’s Body

for him. He’s been doing that for
four years.

Jeremy, Jennifer and Kimberley. He
has 13 grandchildren.

Thanks you, Steve, for your
contribution to our industry.
NDABA 26th ANNUAL CONVENTION
& TRADE SHOW HIGHLIGHTS
North Dakota Auto Body Hall of Fame
JIm RoSTAD
NDABA Hall of Fame
Jim Rostad, retired owner of
Minot’s Finest Collision Center in
Minot was inducted into the North
Dakota Auto Body Hall of Fame at
this year’s convention.
Jim received the honor during
the convention held in Minot at the
Holiday Inn on March 23, 2012.
Jim Rostad graduated from Carpio
High School in 1970. That summer
he got a job as a car jockey at the body
shop at Westlie Motors in Minot. He
worked full time for a year, and then
continued to work nearly 40 hours a
week while enrolled at Minot State
College for the next two years. In
1973 he returned to full-time status
and after a short time working on
the used car lot, returned to the body
shop as assistant manager in 1974.
Verla remembers Jim telling of the
first estimate he wrote, with the
assistance of one of the body men.
The body labor time was good, but
they forgot to figure any paint time!
They honored their estimate, and the
body man had to give the painter the
time he had coming from the body
labor on the job. That didn’t happen
again! Despite the rocky start, Jim
was promoted to manager of the
body shop at Westlie’s in 1975 at
the age of 22.
In the 1980s Jim attended a series
of management training classes
offered by 3M, known as Auto
Body Repair Management Systems
training, also known as 3M ARMS.
These classes provided the beginning
for what would become a life-long
ambition to elevate the level of
professionalism in the industry.
Jim was among the first members
of the North Dakota Auto Body
Association, was a director for many
years and is a past president.
Jim attended NACE in Denver in
1984, which was the second year
for the event. He saw the value in
a convention and trade show for
the ND Auto Body Association and
chaired the first convention in Minot
in 1985 with Amos Stackhouse and
Mickey Mazzuca from Ford Motor
Co. as speakers. Jim remained in
touch with both Amos and Mickey
and they were happy to join us for
our 25th anniversary at Lisbon in
2010.
In 1990 Jim and his assistant
manager, Darrell Loftesnes, left
Westlie’s and opened Minot’s Finest
Collision Center, an independent
shop. Jim and Darrell remained
committed to professionalism and
designed a well-equipped shop with
the first computerized estimating
system in Minot. Jim has always
understood the importance of
continuing education and keeping
abreast with changes in the industry.
Under Jim’s leadership Minot’s
Finest Collision Center became an
I-CAR Gold Class shop and all of its
technicians and management team
attained the status I-CAR Platinum
Individuals.
Jim’s wife, Verla, worked as the
office manager at Minot’s Finest
Collision Center for nearly 20
years. Jim and Verla have two adult
children and three grandchildren.
Jim is also active in their church
and the community. He served on
the Minot Housing Authority board
of directors for several years and is
currently vice president of the Minot
Public School Board. He is also
the Northwest director on the State
School Boards Association board of
directors.

NDABA Survey
Your input is needed!
During the last meeting of the ND
Auto Body Association, it was decided
to conduct a survey of the members to
determine which was the most convenient
time of the week to have our annual
convention.
There are some within our organization
who would prefer not to give up their
Saturday and some that would.
Please go to our website, www.
ndautobody.com, and cast your ballot.
Or, if you would like, contact any board
representative and express your opinion.
Better yet, attend the next meeting of
the Association and express your opinion
there. That meeting is Saturday, September
8, 2012, 11:00 am at The Chieftan in
Carrington, ND.

Minutes of the 2012 Board Meeting at
Convention – March 22, 2012
Ed Barnhardt called the meeting of the NDABA to order
at 10AM on March 22, 2012 at the Holiday Inn Riverside
in Minot prior to the convention. Those in attendance were
Ed Barnhardt, Jim and Verla Rostad, Clyde and Bonnie
Nelson, Kent Meidinger, Larry Teters, Chuck German,
Miles Doll, Bryce Hancock, Ron McClellan, Brenyn Otto,
Roger Krapp and wife, Scott Heintzman, Jeff and MarJean
Pfau, Tom and Lana Ose.
The secretarys report was read and approved. Motion to
approve by Jim Rostad, 2nd by Kent Meidinger.
The treasures report was given and approved. Motion to
approve by Tom Ose, 2nd by Bryce Hancock. The balance
of the association’s account is $37,682.45. Eighty-five
shops are on the list and about 25 shops have not paid their
membership dues.
Shops reported to have had a busy winter even with
the mild weather. The western part of the state has been
extremely busy with the added population and trucking
traffic.
Magazine Report: The year ended with a $7.37 negative
balance. Clyde has added three advertisers to the magazine.
Copy continues to be needed. Personal interest stories as
well as body shop articles can be sent to Clyde Nelson.
Old Business: All members be sure to thank the vendors
for displaying at the convention and for advertising in the
magazine. There are 32 vendors registered for the display
area. We thank Rydell’s for sponsoring the Thursday
seminar, the speaker and his expenses. We also want
to thank Pam’s Auto for sponsoring the noon lunch on
Thursday, and Minot Chrysler Center and Hedahls for
sponsoring tech night.
The 2013 convention will be held April 11 and 12 at the
Ramada Inn in Grand Forks. Larry Teters is working on it
and will get some of the area shops to assist him.
The 2014 convention: Jim Rostad made a motion to hold
the convention in Fargo, 2nd by Tom Ose. Scott Heintzman
will work on setting it up.
Discussion was held on what changes could we try to
improve attendance at convention. A motion was made to
change to a Friday-Saturday format but died for a lack of
a second.
Website: Some shops have linked their web site with
the NDABA site. The web site designer was again spoken
highly of for the work he has done. They are planning to
add a Hall of Fame page, tech of the year page, and update
the map of members. Anything wanted on the site can be
easily added.
Most offices are open this year. Members will visit
tonight to get names of those who would be willing to serve
this year. Len Sadler from Amidon and Brad Martinson
from Grafton have volunteered to serve on the board.
New Business: Discussion was held on the need for
an executive director to promote our business and the
organization. Verla Rostad has a power point presentation
that could be used to promote our industry.
Honorary memberships: Miles Doll made a motion
that retirees be kept on the mailing list and will be invited
to attend conventions, 2nd by Scott Heintzman. Jim
Rostad amended this motion to read that the retiree must
have had ten years of continuous membership and be
retired to receive the magazine and get an invitation to the
conventions.
Discussion was held on raising the convention fees. They
have been at $50 per member for many years and expenses
continue to rise. It was tabled for a future meeting.
A conference call has been set for May 19th at 9AM.
Verla Rostad will e-mail out the information to set this up.
Bryce Hancock and Miles Doll volunteered to serve on
the audit committee and will meet at 5PM, March 22, 2012.

award at the noon luncheon on Friday.

Marlin for a Minoter
By Kim Fundingsland, Staff Writer, Minot Daily News
This article first appeared in the Minot Daily News,
permission was given to reprint.
Fishermen are always secretly hoping to hook into a big fish.
For a Minot man, that wish came true recently. Scott Sjol not only
hooked into a big fish, it was ridiculously big – 610 pounds big!
The fish was a blue marlin. Blue marlin are known to grow to
immense size, but 610 pounds put Sjol’s fish toward the top of blue
marlin catches off the waters of Hawaii. Sjol and his wife, Diane,
recently vacationed on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. While there
they contacted a local charter company. The rest is fishing history.
“Three times that fish came out of the water,” said Scott Sjol.
“It was about 400 yards out when he came out the first time. The
reel had 750 yards of 400-pound test line. The captain said it was
a 500 pounder. I could hardly believe it when he said that.”
Accompanying Sjol on the charter was brother-in-law Gelrge
Dakin, of Bedford, Texas, and a fisherman from New Mexico who,
according to Sjol, “just happened to be on the boat.”
“I sat my brother-in-law down first,” said Sjol. “He didn’t last
long. I told the captain that if he wished to keep his rod and reel he’d
better turn toward that fish. There was no line left. It was a blast.”
The battle with the monster marlin lasted an hour. Shifts at eh
reel left all three men exhausted.
“None of us could hold our arms up,” laughed Sjol. “It was quite an animal and too darn big to get on board. The captain
made the decision to drag him behind the boat seven and a half miles to shore. We were hoping the sharks didn’t get to
him first.”
The sharks never arrived, but once on shore the fish attracted a swarm of people. The marlin measured exactly 12 feet
from tip to tail and boasted a 62-inch girth. Marlin of that size are a rare catch in Hawaiian waters. The biggest marlin
shown on a local website was 732 pounds.
“I kind of caught on to how good a catch it really was when the locals at the resort were bringing 10 at a time just to
look at the picture,” said Sjol. “I knew it wasn’t an everyday occurence, that’s for sure.”
Sjol was lucky to get on the water. It was the first trip out for the charter in four days. The region had received a whopping
41 inches of rain in 48 hours. The
system included three inch hail and
a tornado.
“We had to go quite a wasys out
to find blue water,” said Sjol. “It
was rough, too. It looked like it
was going to be a pretty dead day.
We had about a 30-pound MahiMahi. About an hour later it got
pretty lively.”
Did it ever! Sjol said he
considered getting a mount made
of his big catch, but ultimately
decided against it.
“What do you do with something
like that? They just do Fiberglas
replicas anyway. We ate the Mahi
for lunch and left the marlin for the
captain,” said Sjol.
The lucky Minoter said he’s
comfortable fishing bluegills
at Lake Metigoshe and that his
previous big fish was a six-pound
walleye, quite a change from a
giant blue marlin.
