NDABA 26th ANNUAL CONVENTION & TRADE SHOW HIGHLIGHTS North Dakota Auto Body Hall of Fame JIm RoSTAD NDABA Hall of Fame Jim Rostad, retired owner of Minot’s Finest Collision Center in Minot was inducted into the North Dakota Auto Body Hall of Fame at this year’s convention. Jim received the honor during the convention held in Minot at the Holiday Inn on March 23, 2012. Jim Rostad graduated from Carpio High School in 1970. That summer he got a job as a car jockey at the body shop at Westlie Motors in Minot. He worked full time for a year, and then continued to work nearly 40 hours a week while enrolled at Minot State College for the next two years. In 1973 he returned to full-time status and after a short time working on the used car lot, returned to the body shop as assistant manager in 1974. Verla remembers Jim telling of the first estimate he wrote, with the assistance of one of the body men. The body labor time was good, but they forgot to figure any paint time! They honored their estimate, and the body man had to give the painter the time he had coming from the body labor on the job. That didn’t happen again! Despite the rocky start, Jim was promoted to manager of the body shop at Westlie’s in 1975 at the age of 22. In the 1980s Jim attended a series of management training classes offered by 3M, known as Auto Body Repair Management Systems training, also known as 3M ARMS. These classes provided the beginning for what would become a life-long ambition to elevate the level of professionalism in the industry. Jim was among the first members of the North Dakota Auto Body Association, was a director for many years and is a past president. Jim attended NACE in Denver in 1984, which was the second year for the event. He saw the value in a convention and trade show for the ND Auto Body Association and chaired the first convention in Minot in 1985 with Amos Stackhouse and Mickey Mazzuca from Ford Motor Co. as speakers. Jim remained in touch with both Amos and Mickey and they were happy to join us for our 25th anniversary at Lisbon in 2010. In 1990 Jim and his assistant manager, Darrell Loftesnes, left Westlie’s and opened Minot’s Finest Collision Center, an independent shop. Jim and Darrell remained committed to professionalism and designed a well-equipped shop with the first computerized estimating system in Minot. Jim has always understood the importance of continuing education and keeping abreast with changes in the industry. Under Jim’s leadership Minot’s Finest Collision Center became an I-CAR Gold Class shop and all of its technicians and management team attained the status I-CAR Platinum Individuals. Jim’s wife, Verla, worked as the office manager at Minot’s Finest Collision Center for nearly 20 years. Jim and Verla have two adult children and three grandchildren. Jim is also active in their church and the community. He served on the Minot Housing Authority board of directors for several years and is currently vice president of the Minot Public School Board. He is also the Northwest director on the State School Boards Association board of directors. Fishermen are always secretly hoping to hook into a big fish. For a Minot man, that wish came true recently. Scott Sjol not only hooked into a big fish, it was ridiculously big – 610 pounds big! The fish was a blue marlin. Blue marlin are known to grow to immense size, but 610 pounds put Sjol’s fish toward the top of blue marlin catches off the waters of Hawaii. Sjol and his wife, Diane, recently vacationed on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. While there they contacted a local charter company. The rest is fishing history. “Three times that fish came out of the water,” said Scott Sjol. “It was about 400 yards out when he came out the first time. The reel had 750 yards of 400-pound test line. The captain said it was a 500 pounder. I could hardly believe it when he said that.” Accompanying Sjol on the charter was brother-in-law Gelrge Dakin, of Bedford, Texas, and a fisherman from New Mexico who, according to Sjol, “just happened to be on the boat.” “I sat my brother-in-law down first,” said Sjol. “He didn’t last long. I told the captain that if he wished to keep his rod and reel he’d better turn toward that fish. There was no line left. It was a blast.” The battle with the monster marlin lasted an hour. Shifts at eh reel left all three men exhausted. “None of us could hold our arms up,” laughed Sjol. “It was quite an animal and too darn big to get on board. The captain made the decision to drag him behind the boat seven and a half miles to shore. We were hoping the sharks didn’t get to him first.” The sharks never arrived, but once on shore the fish attracted a swarm of people. The marlin measured exactly 12 feet from tip to tail and boasted a 62-inch girth. Marlin of that size are a rare catch in Hawaiian waters. The biggest marlin shown on a local website was 732 pounds. “I kind of caught on to how good a catch it really was when the locals at the resort were bringing 10 at a time just to look at the picture,” said Sjol. “I knew it wasn’t an everyday occurence, that’s for sure.” Sjol was lucky to get on the water. It was the first trip out for the charter in four days. The region had received a whopping 41 inches of rain in 48 hours. The system included three inch hail and a tornado. “We had to go quite a wasys out to find blue water,” said Sjol. “It was rough, too. It looked like it was going to be a pretty dead day. We had about a 30-pound MahiMahi. About an hour later it got pretty lively.” Did it ever! Sjol said he considered getting a mount made of his big catch, but ultimately decided against it. “What do you do with something like that? They just do Fiberglas replicas anyway. We ate the Mahi for lunch and left the marlin for the captain,” said Sjol. The lucky Minoter said he’s comfortable fishing bluegills at Lake Metigoshe and that his previous big fish was a six-pound walleye, quite a change from a giant blue marlin. 17 www.rydellcars.com staff has over 200 years of parts experience. parts department will ship parts to your door via our own truck (where avail able), SPEEDEE, Cross Country, Common Courier, UPS, or mail; whichever you prefer. parts department offers competitive prices and a “No-Hassle” return policy. inventory of Powertrain and Collision parts is the largest in North Dakota.
