that is for sale. As we have featured
a few stories about XJ Coupes, I
thought I would share it with you.

A restored Coupe for sale in the U.K - a
RHD V12. Our daughter was in graduate
school in Durham, U.K. I suddenly felt a
strong urge to visit her and make sure
she was keeping up with her studies.
While there, I arranged a side trip to see
the Coupe at a rural train station. After
a wild ride through the countryside I
decided this was the Coupe for me. The
rest is history and what a history it has
been.
After fifteen memorable years on the
(JCNA) Concours circuit, including six
North American Championship 1st
Place Awards and three Challenge
Championship 1st Place Awards, I have
decided to sell my European version
1976 Jaguar XJ 5.3C (XJ V12 Coupe). It
is my hope that a fellow enthusiast will
purchase the Coupe and will continue
showing it. This Coupe is a proven
champion, carefully restored and
maintained to the standard for that
model. It should be shared with those
who appreciate such a rare and beautiful
Jaguar.
The Series Two saloon was introduced
at the 1973 Frankfurt Motor Show
alongside the two-door coupe. This
model, which carries the suffix C for
Coupe is Sir William Lyons last project
he oversaw before his retirement. The
pillar-less Coupe is based on the short
wheelbase Series One XJ6. It’s 5.3 liter
V12 fuel-injected engine that produces
285 bhp and a top speed of 147 mph.
0-60 comes in 7.6 seconds.
I searched both here and abroad for my
Coupe. Soon the V12 Coupe became the
sole focus of my search but they were
in the U.K. on December 21, 1976. Its
owner was the Hon. H. V. Smith of Oxon.
Maj. R. B. French of Somerset, purchased
the car in September of 1983 and drove
it until 1987 when full restoration
was undertaken. The restoration was
overseen by his son, Peter French, and
was completed in 1995.
I would drive the Coupe on business
trips of over 100 miles and have always
driven the Coupe to and from JCNA
Concours events. I would leave before
the sun came up and make it home the
same day with my trophy. Driving into
the dawn on the open highway with just
the soothing purr of the V12 engine at
3,000 rpm is heavenly. Ah, what joy…
what pleasant memories.

This factory is located (for the time being) in Fremont, CA at the site of an old GM/Toyota plant. Who knows how long it will be before the anti-business climate in California
runs them off.

JOC and SDJC members, Ken and Ann
Smith of La Jolla and Rancho Santa Fe
won a First Place Award for their elegant
Rolls-Royce Phantom V Sedanca de
Ville by James Young Coachbuilders at
the famed Pebble Beach Concours on
the Monterey Peninsula. The Pebble
Beach Concours has been celebrating
fine automobiles for ¬¬¬¬¬over 60 years
and is recognized as one of the toughest
automotive competitions with entries
from literally all over the world.
The Smiths are no strangers to the
Concours world having participated in
the La Jolla Concours every year from
its inception as well as other Concours
events across the United States with
frequent wins for cars in their collection.
Previously their 1929 Packard Dual Cowl
Phaeton won First at Pebble Beach as
well. They are regular competitors in
JCNA Concours as well.

The James Young Sedanca de Ville
coachwork features a hardtop that slides
into the rear portion of the roof, leaving
the front compartment completely
open. A metal flap closes to conceal the
retracted hardtop. Dalton, Bennett and
other writers on Rolls-Royce coachwork
consider the James Young Sedanca de
Ville design (PV22SD) to be the most
elegant. Only seven examples exist
worldwide.

Prior to the Concours event itself
the Smiths participated in the Tour
d’Elegance, an eighty-mile drive that was
led this year by race drivers Sir Sterling
Moss and Sir Jackie Stewart. The tour
covered parts of the famed 17-Mile Drive
in Pebble Beach and then to the Laguna
Seca Raceway for a lap before a fifty mile
round trip along the breathtaking scenic
drive to Big Sur, returning to Carmel
Village for a sumptuous buffet lunch.

MONTEREY AUCTION RESULTS:
HUGE PRICES OF JAGUARS
Whether you were selling a rough around the edges XK120 or a pristine Series 1 E-Type, it seems that this was your year to sell in
Monterey. Virtually every auction featured some Jags, and some extraordinary (and rather ordinary) prices.
The high sale was $528,000 for a Series 1 E-Type 3.8 roadster sold at Gooding, surely an all time world record. Generally high prices
for E’s (and to a lesser extent XKs) have the block chock full of them. More than half the Jags sold were E-Types, with XKs accounting
for all the other sales save two SS100s. Not a single 70’s or later Jag of any kind sold, save one V-12 E.
Prices, as can be seen from the following list, were all over the board. As always, great examples get great prices, but there seems to
be a clear trend….people want early cars and open cars. The unloved variants, like the E 2+2 and V-12 have not enjoyed the appreciation of their predecessors.
The bottom line seems to be, if you own and E Type or an XK, it might be a good time to review your insurance policy “agreed value”
amount!

September 27-28 – IEJC Concours and
English Motor Show in Fallbrook
The IEJC Concours will be held in conjunction with the English Motors at Fairbrook show in Fallbrook. The English
Motor Show always draws a capacity
crowd of 250 British vehicles, and for
good reasons…..the location and show
field are excellent, there is always a nice
selection of rare and unusual vehicles,
and it’s a great drive to the venue.
This year our Club will be partnering
with the SoCal Austin Healey Club for a
joint event. The show is on Sunday the
28th, but for those interested, we are organizing an optional Saturday night stay
at the Courtyard Marriott in Oceanside.
So we’ll caravan down the coast on Saturday afternoon, meet up for cocktails
and dinner Saturday evening and then
take the short hop over to Fallbrook early on Sunday.
Those wishing to drive round trip on
Sunday may meet the overnighters in
Oceanside, or we will try to organize caravans from other areas.
Please note that you MUST pre-register
for the event in either case. If you have
entered the IEJC Concours as either a
judged or display car, you do not have to
register with the English Motor Show. If
however, you have not registered with
the IEJC, you must buy your ticket from
the English Motors folks. As the field is
limited to 250 cars, don’t be disappointed, register now. Go to www.englishmotorsatfairbrook.org. IEJC Concours and

Indian Motorcycle Museum Tour
And Frank Miller Middle School Science
Fundraiser
Plan now for the October 4th tour. We
will meet up and enjoy breakfast at Jim
and Barbara MacLaughlin’s Rancho in
Riverside and see where Jim spends his
time doing restorations.
Then we will drive a short distance
around Lake Mathews to Bob Stark’s Indian Motorcycle museum and restoration shop which has a large collection of
those famous motorcycles. This is a rare
chance to learn the history of America’s
first motorcycle company from a man
that has been involved since the very
early days.
At noon we will motor on to the Frank
A. Miller Middle School where Barbara
teaches science. Her Science Olympiad
team will prepare a fine lunch followed
by silent auctions and a lively BINGO
GAME with great prizes. This is a fund
raiser to support the school’s science
program.
Our Jags will be parked in the school’s
quad so that all can appreciate them.
The activities will be in the school gym
so no need to worry about sun or rain.

250 extraordinary artifacts that trace the
history of the route and its impact on
American popular culture.
Connecting Chicago to Los Angeles, the
2,400-mile-long highway was a witness
to history and a symbol for America on
the move. Route 66: The Road and the
Romance travels the iconic road from its
inception in 1926 through the drama of
the Great Depression to its heyday as a
travel destination and the route’s eventual displacement by the Interstate Highway System. The exhibition concludes
with a contemporary look at the road
and the movement for its preservation.
Route 66 presents historical artifacts
from institutions and private collections
across the United States, many never before displayed together. See the oldest
existing Route 66 shield, an early Jackson Pollock landscape painting, a tenfoot twin visible gas pump, the handwritten page from The Grapes of Wrath
manuscript that introduces the “Mother
Road,” renowned Dust Bowl–era photographs, Woody Guthrie’s guitar, the original typewritten scroll of Jack Kerouac’s

The JOC now has a two-tier membership
dues structure for new and renewing members. The amount of your dues depends on
whether you want to receive the JOC newsletter, Jaguar Tales, via email only or via the
US Postal Service (a printed copy) and via
email.
The annual dues amount for the newsletter
email-only digital edition is only $60. The annual dues amount for the newsletter USPS
mail paper edition is now $80. Membership
in the JOC also includes membership in the
national organization, Jaguar Clubs of North
America (JCNA). JCNA also publishes a quarterly magazine which is included in your dues.
Also, we are pleased to announce that beginning in July you will be able to enroll as a new

JOC Tech Session at JP’s European Auto

This year’s southern edition of our annual tech session was hosted by JP’s European Auto in Huntington Beach.
too much of a good thing, I guess.
I really do encourage you to attend one
of the club’s tech sessions next year.

For folks who haven’t attended one of
our tech sessions, I’d really like to suggest that you put next year’s event in
your calendar – it’s a great way to have
an expert take a look at your car from
top to bottom and provide you with their
comments and observations – no one
will try to sell you anything – in fact, no
work is done on any of the cars that day,
even if you might want it done.
We’re in that time of the year when
our mornings aren’t particularly bright
and cheery, but JP more than made up
for that with coffee and doughnuts for
the early arrivers – soon enough, small
groups of folks were chatting while
watching JP and his staff set cars on the
hoists and begin poking around underneath – always an invitation for a small
group to form under the car to watch
the proceedings, offer comments, or
just snoop around to see if the car is like
theirs. JP provided written comment
sheets on each car for the owner’s reference.
It was a low key and thoroughly enjoyable morning spent with our cars and
friends with similar interests; at the end
of the morning, we’d seen cars ranging
from e-types to modern generation,
with several nice examples showing up
to keep our interest. One very nice example was the 1987 XJ6 sedan brought
in by the original owner – it looked as
though it had just left the showroom, in
part due to having only 7900 miles on it.
Just a lovely car to look over, in pristine
condition and as original as the day it left
the dealership.
It was interesting to note that owner’s
whose cars had been on the rack early in
the morning were still around chatting as
the morning drew to a close. Can’t get

Did you know that you have
to unload the spring
tension to test the condition of the ball
joints? Well, that’s how it’s done. With
the car on the lift, the play may seem
acceptable but when done correctly, the
worn parts are obvious. In my case, the
diagnosis was four new ball joints and
upper control arm bushings. Disaster
averted!
We also got to ogle customers cars
including a highly original 1965 British
Racing Green FHC that had just arrived
for restoration to include a high spec
4.2 liter engine, modern 5 speed
transmission and Dunlop alloy racing
wheels a la the Lightweight E-type. Also
present was a restored 1963 E-type OTS
that was being final prepped for its trip
back home to the East Coast.
Not only that, but Creighton opted for
Starbucks coffee and pastries instead of
doughnuts. What a pleasant surprise!
If you’re in the Valley or anywhere
proximate, you must bring your car over
for a fun and informative morning.
Special thanks to Steve and the crew at
Steve’s Jaguar who hosted our second
Tech Session last month. The turnout
was good with a number of Club
member’s car’s invading the pristine
workplace at Steve’s.
We were treated to technician Brian
Davies dissertation on contemporary
motor oils and the best options for
current and vintage Jaguars.
Did
you know that Mobil 1 is not a true
synthetic!?! Watch for a full article on
Oil Tech in coming editions of the Tales.
It was informative and may just help
your Jag last longer and run better.
Checking ball joints…so I was informed
that my pristine original 1971 XJ would
have failed MoT if we were in England.
A frightening prospect since that would
mean that I wouldn’t be able to drive
the car on public streets. Brian was a
certified MoT technician during his early
days in England and Steve’s brings the
exact same road worthiness tests to
their customer’s cars.

I attended the Burbank auction as a
guest of Auctions America who gave me
4 day access to the over 400 cars at this,
their second annual event. The auction
was held in the Convention Center/
Marriot Hotel across the Way from the
Bob Hope Airport.
Of particular interest to our readers,
Auctions America was chosen to
liquidate part of the former Bob Pond

XJ13 Replica and C-type and D-Type
replicas. All three cars sold for very
realistic high bids, somewhat favoring
the buyers, with the XJ13 hammering
sold at $176,000 including premium.
I had a chance to inspect the allaluminum XJ13 up close - it was
absolutely stunning. The monocoque
showed hundreds of rivets securing the
hand formed aluminum panels as per
the original. The overall height of the
XJ13 was close to the 40 inch height of
the race car spec of the 1960’s and the
natural aluminum cockpit was a very
intimate affair, although two leather
buckets were fitted. It was safe to say
that this Editor will have to admire it
from afar because I won’t fit! Power
comes from a mid-seventies Jaguar V12
with dry sump lubrication and a rather
elaborate, period fuel injection system
and a ZF transaxle. A dual overhead cam
engine was used in lieu of the prototype
4-cam V12 used in the original car. Rumor
is that the car is going to Australia.
A gorgeous aluminum Lister Jaguar
replica was a no sale. Featuring chrome
D-type alloy wheels and a Jaguar straight
six with dry sump and triple webers the
car appeared race ready. The car was
built as a one-off and is reportedly the
only copy of the two original Costin
bodied Listers ever made. Car was said
to have been owned by Terry Larson and
came with a VARA log book.
Barn Finds are all the rage currently and
this auction had a requisite example; a
1970 E-type FHC 4 speed. It was more
like a Beverly Hills “garage find” as it
was previously the property of a wellknown architect. Allegedly, the car had
only travelled 11,000 miles since new
and the interior showed “lovely patina”
as per the auction description. It was
photographed resting in situ on four flat
Pirelli P77’s (remember those!?!). While
fitted with a new set of white walls, the
car appeared at auction complete with
dust and dirt. Bidding was brisk and the
car sold for $29,700.
My favorite of the auction is this month’s
cover car; a pretty black 1948 Mark IV LHD
Drop Head. With the gleaming chrome,
black canvas top and lovely oxblood red
leather coachwork, it became clear that
it would have to adorn the cover of this
Month’s Tales. This car was a no-sale,
with the high bid at roughly half of value
but the right two buyers were not in the
room this time.

Judging
Everyone’s car will be eligible for judging. There will be a
Best of Show for each car club that attends. All vehicles must
be driven to qualify, and all prizes will be awarded after the
BBQ. This will be a fun informal car show encouraging members
to enjoy and drive their Jaguars.
