On David’s most recent release he has a “golden” trebletone of exceptional
power and purity. He explores bel canto compositjons of the 17th and 18th
centuries -- often sung in those days by castrati ,who enjoyed high social
status. A lengthy and learned essay in the CD’s insert describes (in English)
the art of the castrati and discusses the music they sang.

This CD is included because it is now available in the UK at a low price, and is
an marvellous example of treble artistry. As the 21st century dawned, 12-year
old Billy was idolized across the USA as an inspirational soloist and performer
with a remarkable voice -- powerful with astounding control and flawles
phrasing. He chose country-ballads as his medium, and entranced the nation,
winning accolades from every audience.

This is the first studio album to feature the world’s oldest choir of men and
boys, and the first (or second!) album ever to be recorded in the Sistine Chapel. However, the acoustics of
the Chapel are far from ideal, due to reverberations (echoes) and can sometimes create a “confused” sound
– although the treble voices of this 60-strong man/boy choir can easily cut through this. Uniquely, this disc
is said to have the only recording of Allegri’s original version of his Miserere as preserved in the Sistine
Codex of 1661, and it is interesting to compare this with subsequent (and somewhat embellished) versions
with which most of us are familiar. Full details are given, in English, in the CD’s insert.

With most branches of HMV now closed, and those that remain offering almost no UK
cathedral-choir CDs, one has to rely on amazon.co.uk as a major source for new
releases. Luckily, Amazon also offer within their lists the same titles from other
supported sellers, so Amazon’s own price for a particular CD is very often not the lowest
price at which it is available on their website. In the list below, the range of Amazon
prices for new factory-sealed CDs is given. Note that prices are subject to change without

These are not new compositions sung by new soloists, and all were available very many years ago on
cassette-tapes (or, for Aled Jones, on early CDs). However, to have such a large number of treble voices all
brought together on one disc is a marvelous treat. For one thing, it highlights the huge range and variety of
boys’ voices -- although all classified as “treble” -- and for another it shows wherein lie the roots that can
flower into world-famous adult Welsh male-voice choirs!

Absolutely stunning! An exceptionally pure treble voice at the peak of
perfection. Moray’s performance of Queen of the Night (from Mozart’s “Magic Flute”) and Laudate
Dominum (also Mozart) are breathtaking. His control, clarity of tone, and 3-octave range allow him to
confidently handle all types of sacred and secular vocal styles, as is shown by the compassion and feeling
he puts into a specially-commissioned ballad, Miss You, as well as into Bach’s Bist du Bei Mir and
Handel’s Ombra Mai Fu. Accompaniment varies from orchestra to bagpipes, from choir to harpsichord, but
it is Moray’s glorious voice that holds one totally spellbound. Whether your preference is for popular,
classical or Scots music, this disc offers total perfection.

The Augsburger Domsingknaben is one of Germany’s most renowned
man/boy choirs, and traces its roots back to 1439. Based at the choir school of St. Mary’s Cathedral in
Augsburg (Bavaria), up to 350 boys aged from 7 to 14 are taught individually and in groups, with special
emphasis on encouraging treble soloists. Which explains the outstanding performances offered by these
three young vocalists, who lift examples of the treble repertoire, sung in German, into another realm. So
one listens with delight and awe to their fresh interpretations of Tears in Heaven, Ave Maria, Pie Jesu,
Morning has broken, and Allegri’s Miserere, as well as to Ein schoner tag (Amazing Grace), Uber den
wolken, and Raise me up. It’s a huge plus that this release is now available from Amazon’s UK site, and
can therefore be purchased easily, and paid for in £sterling.

WORCESTER CATHEDRAL
Worcester Cathedral Voluntary Choir
Worcester has the only remaining Voluntary Choir of men & boys in Britain. Founded in 1874, this choir
normally sings at the Cathedral’s Evening Service on Sunday, and also takes part in concerts and other
events. Although their CD is not new, this choir deserves our enthusiastic support.

THOMANERCHOR Leipzig
Founded in 1212, the St.Thomas Choir of Leipzig – the Thomanerchor -- presently comprises
almost100 boys aged 9 to 18, all of whom board at the Thomasschule zu Leipzig. The school’s
emphasis is on musical education, and particularly on the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, who
served as the Choir’s Director from 1723 to 1750. For the Choir’s 800 th Anniversary, a new 10CD collection of Bach’s cantatas has been recorded under the title“The Liturgical Year with
Johann Sebastian Bach”, with all the soprano and alto arias and recitatives sung by boys’ voices.
