AJAX is also fortunate to have a number of other club sponsors: • ANTLER • PRATT FOUNDATION • ESKAL • BARTON GLASS • SOUND INSURANCE • SOUTH YARRA BMW Season 2015 Weekly Wrap – Edition 5 We also express our appreciation to our club supporters: • KNIGHT BUILDING GROUP • THE DENTAL CO • SPOTLIGHT FOUNDATION • OASIS ORTHOPAEDICS All these sponsors are supporting local Jewish football and we urge our football community to support them. Without the help of sponsors we couldn’t provide the players with such a fantastic junior footy experience. The AJAX Football Club express our appreciation of thanks to all our Sponsors for Season 2015. Season 2015 Weekly Wrap – Edition 5 “Photo of the Week” This week’s Photo of the Week features Yonah Gutnick (U15 Jets) who kicked his very first goal for the Jackas. All his teammates ran over to him and helped him celebrate his goal, an occasion that Yonah will forever remember. Yonah’s team had a massive 10 goal win and he is well respected by his teammates. Now that he has kicked his first Jackas goal, we all hope there are many more 6 pointers to follow. Well done and Mazel-Tov Yonah. (picture supplied by Naomi Gutnick) Season 2015 Weekly Wrap – Edition 5 Shavuot – Round 6 – Sunday 24 May 2015 As a reminder due to Shavuot falling on Sunday (24 May) the AJFC WILL NOT BE PLAYING ANY GAMES on this day. The club is working very closely with the SMJFL to have matches rescheduled to other days (or nights). This is of course subject to the agreement of other clubs & teams and will also depend on the availability of grounds etc. The league will be doing all it can to ensure as many games as possible can be rescheduled and we will keep you all informed and updated when further information is known. NEW WEBSITE The AJAX football clubs are thrilled to announce the arrival of the NEW ‘ONE CLUB” COMBINED WEBSITE” The website contains lots of important and informative information for both the Senior & Junior Football clubs, all on the one website. Make sure you check it out at www.ajfc.com.au and visit it constantly to find out lots of information about the clubs. Better still, bookmark it as a favourite!!! Over the coming weeks more content will be added to the site and our appreciation of thanks are extended to our very own Website Guru, Harry Jacobs and others who were involved in the creation of this “One Club” website. Any feedback can be sent to Harry at [email protected] Season 2015 Weekly Wrap – Edition 5 Time to introduce the AJFC Committee Last week we introduced to the AJFC community one of the Executive members of the AJFC Committee being our Vice President (Operations) Jeff Wise. This week we introduce the “head honcho” of the club President Dan Antman, and the Vice President Football (Head of Football Operations), Rod Nirens. Name: Daniel Antman Position at Club: President What does your role entail? Wow – where do I start and where do I finish? It’s really a coordination role. Like any leadership role it is about getting the best out of the people around you and I think I have achieved that given the fantastic output of our hard working committee. Specifically the Presidents role is to act as advocate for the club in external environments that includes the league, other clubs, councils, Maccabi and other related parties involved in the running of sport. The role also requires oversight of the all key areas of the club including the footy department, operations and administration. How many years have you been involved with the Club? This is my 4th year as President and prior to that I was club secretary for a year. If I include the years of running Auskick and being on the general committee, I think it must be close to 8 or 9 years. How would you describe yourself in 3 words? Energetic, Passionate and Creative. Do you have a motto and what is it? No, I’m afraid not. Although I do like something I recently was taught “if you can’t afford to buy 2 of something don’t buy 1” – kind of like that. What is something surprising about you that people may not know? I really like David Michelson (but please don’t tell anyone!) Editors comment: Actually Dan doesn’t really like David Michelson……he actually LOVES him being around the club and being part of the Committee. What are some words of advice you can share with the AJFC community? Most people will expect that my response to this question will revolve around behaviour at the ground or the need to have more parents get involved in the running of the club – but that’s not the case. While not advice per se, I just want to encourage parents and the kids alike, to stay involved in the footy club. Footy is a big part of our way of life in Melbourne and the club provides a great place to connect our culture and community with our favourite Melbourne sport – Aussie Rules Footy. Season 2015 Weekly Wrap – Edition 5 Do you have a funny joke to share with the AJFC community? I promised I tried everything from corny to inappropriate so at the end of the day, I gave up! Who do you support in the AFL and why? Carlton and right now – “not happy Jan”. I’ve been a member since I was about 15 years old – been through the highs and going through the lows. Unfortunately for Collingwood and Essendon supporters we’ll be back bigger and better!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Now we introduce the Vice President Football (Head of Football Operations), Rod Nirens. Name: Rod Nirens Position at Club: VP Football (Head of footy operations) What does your role entail? Placing kids in their respective teams; overseeing match committee (team selection each week for the graded teams); looking after all our coaches; arguing with dog owners on Oval 4 at Wednesday night training. How many years have you been involved with the Club? 11 years in total – 4 years at Auskick and 7 years with the juniors. How would you describe yourself in 3 words? Passionate, energetic, empathetic. Do you have a motto and what is it? I have two: (1) Be cool and composed. (2) Pick your battles….focus your energy on what really matters. What is something surprising about you that people may not know? I work at Microsoft and I don’t really hate Apple. What are some words of advice you can share with the AJFC community? Enjoy watching your kids play footy, but make sure it is about the kids and not the parents. Don’t take it too seriously and don’t look for perfection – it ain’t gonna happen. Do you have a funny joke to share with the AJFC community? I wondered why the football was getting bigger, then it hit me! Who do you support in the AFL and why? I’ve been a lifelong Collingwood supporter and just love going to watch the biggest sporting club in the world. My wife Kim is a passionate North Melbourne supporter so I’ve been a Roos member for many years (I tend to go to more North games these days). Stay tuned for the upcoming editions of the Weekly Wrap as further committee members will be featured. Season 2015 Weekly Wrap – Edition 5 Round 5 Results & Match Reports As a result of a recent directive from the SMJFL, clubs are no longer permitted to publish any results (including goalkickers & best players) for any of the modified rules age groups (ie U8’s, U9’s & U10’s). The AJFC will be raising this at the upcoming Presidents meeting with the SMJFL, however, in the meantime we need to abide by the league’s directive. U8 Comets Match Report Today we started focused and full of enthusiasm. Our ball movement was quick with some boys taking the game on with great run and carry. We continue to improve and develop as a team As parents and coaches you boys make us proud. The sharing of the footy is making it fun to be part of the team. Keep up your love to play footy and every game will be a winner!! Go Jackas Dave U9 Comets Match Report – They had a bye this round. U9 Jets Match Report It was perfect conditions for a game of footy with only a slight breeze, dry and very little skins were required to keep our boys warm today. We were off to a solid start that saw the ball out of the center more often than not this week. Hart is consistently winning out of the ruck to Rozenes delivering up forward and even kicking a goal or two. The ground was larger than what we are used to which saw us struggling a little to move it consistently however there were many great efforts. Need to work on our teamwork with sharing the ball around, this will ensure us to be more competitive and backing each other up. Looking forward to our home game next week to see if we can play all 4 qtrs with intensity. U9 Stars Match Report. The stars played a fantastic, highly skilled game. We are gelling together as a team exceptionally well. We started the game strongly with great team work and commitment against another strong and fair team in Murrumbeena. At times the backline was under siege but played beautifully as a tight unit with great performances from Zak Harris and Sammy Kirsh, but the back six Season 2015 Weekly Wrap – Edition 5 were the complete package. We also got great service through the midfield from Jethro Gunn and Ari Fell who were quick and tough through the middle, while Boaz Rockman and Joseph Zayontz competed strongly in the ruck. And the forward line also played fantastically well with Noah Epstein booting a season high 5 goals, Chezkie buzzing around creating opportunities and Justin Gross a big focal point out of the square. Our best performance for the year, leading into this week’s bye, and a lot to build on at training this week! Well done boys! U10 Comets: Match Report After a dominant grading period the Comets found themselves promoted into a much more competitive division. East Brighton started strongly but the Comets found their rhythm as the game played out. With gradual improvement there is no doubt we will be able compete with the teams we will come up against in the coming weeks. U10 Jets: Match Report A tight and exciting contest today in perfect conditions. Very enjoyable for all parents to see the commitment being shown by our team at the moment backed up by some great skills too. In a low scoring match the first quarter highlight was a great running goal from Kister. Our engine room of Smorgon, Graham and Pike were fierce at the ball and didn’t allow Murrumbeena any easy possessions and Toby Grodski is relishing his role as the sweeper one kick behind the play. A lovely snapped goal from Gostin in the second term gave us some breathing space going into half time. Murrumbeena proved a very difficult opponent to shake and an inspirational third term from Pike and a couple of tremendous pack marks from Smithson were probably the difference in the end. Great games today from Joseph and Krongold as well. Let’s enjoy our week off next week and come back playing as we have the last month, Go Jackas! U11 Comets: Ajax 3.3 (21) drew with St Kilda City Black 2.9 (21) Goals: Chrapot 3 Best: Alter, Eliau, Jotkowitz, Shaw, C Sheezel, H Sheezel Match Report The Under 11 Comets received an initiation into how tough life is going to be after promotion to the highest division of Under 11 football when they faced St. Kilda City Black at home on Sunday. Season 2015 Weekly Wrap – Edition 5 After scoring the only goal with aid of the breeze in the opening term, they managed to fight back from a second quarter onslaught of 2.7.19 to nothing to outscore the opposition in the second half and squared a thrilling, high standard game of entertaining football. The character of the team was tested at three quarter time when it trailed by 5 points kicking into the wind in the last. They lifted their game and were attacking in the end when the siren sounded; the scoreboard showing the teams locked together in a draw. The emphasis in the weeks to come will be on hard team work and running and spreading to advantage, a necessity at the level the sport. U11 Jets: Bye Goals: n/a Best: n/a Match Report No report as they had a bye. U12 Comets: Prahran Blue 4.10 (34) def Ajax 2.5 (17) Goals: Katz, Kavallero Best: Ehrlich, Kras, Peker, Schwarz, Szer, Vogel Match Report Unfortunately the boys finished the game with their first loss of the year, to head into the bye 4-1 for the season. In what was the first game since being promoted to Div 2, the lads, it's safe to say, were shocked at the speed and precision of the ball movement, displayed by the opposition Prahran. However the boys should take pride that we kept the opposition scoreless in the second half, scoring one ourselves. The match was the 50th for Indy Briskin, Aden Katz and Josh Lindell, with Josh 'celebrating' the milestone by unfortunately suffering a Collar Bone break. Use of the ball in traffic and spread from the contest will be the focus at training, as well as helping the boys to understand that we ABSOLUTELY BELONG in Div 2. Keep up the hard work, boys and things will fall into place one way or another. Great effort. U12 Jets: Hampton Rovers 9.7 (61) def Ajax 0.1 (1) Goals: nil Best: Baron, Bergman, Dzienciol, Flinkier, Lowe, Shostak Match Report No report. Season 2015 Weekly Wrap – Edition 5 U13 Comets: Ajax 10.5 (65) def St Kilda City 6.5 (41) Goals: A Carp 2, Cohen 2, Fibishenko, Herskope, Marabel-Whitburn, Micmacher, Mitsel, Taranto Best: A Carp, Grodski, Marabel-Whitburn, Micmacher, Sheezel, Zukerman Match Report Finally moving up to the correct division we were met by a competitive opponent. The initial shock of difference in skill level probably through us but as the boys settled they gelled and showed why they deserved to move up. Defense was very strong and the forward line lead all day. The midfield quickly learnt an important lesson on manning up when they have the ball. Once it clicked they were very effective in shutting down the opponent. Great team effort and a great start in div 2!! U13 Jets: Murrumbeena 6.9 (45) def Ajax 4.5 (29) Goals: Bursztyn 2, Zayontz, King Best: Bursztyn, de Waal, Goldberg, Meltzer, Weller, Zuker Match Report Another tough day at the office for the U13 Jets, but 2nd and 3rd quarters showed what we are capable of when we set our minds to it. Heads up, we are just about to turn the corner. U14 Comets: Ajax 16.10 (106) def St Peters FC 5.14 (44) Goals: Jacobs 4, Lipton 3, Krongold 2, Taranto 2, Elbaum, Eliau, Kalb, Nirens, Zukerman Best: Bryer, Jacobs, Kalb, Krongold, Lipton, Siegel Match Report What an amazing TEAM performance. St Peters came out with a very physical game plan, but the boys stood tall, weathered the storm and hurt them on the scoreboard. Every single boy played their guts out. You did the jumper proud. “GREAT……..LOVE IT” U14 Jets: South Melbourne 10.9 (69) def Ajax 7.8 (50) Goals: Orbach 2, Pincus 2, Benhamou, Franks, Southwick Best: Franks, Freedman, Lang, Levy, Miller, Orbach Match Report No report. U15 Comets: Ajax 10.11 (71) def Cheltenham 6.5 (41) Goals: Gold 3, Hendel 2, Blecher, Cohen, Efron, Spicer, Zielinski. Best: Efron, Hendel, La Sala, Malka, Nankin, Reicheneberg Match Report A gorgeous day today and a great game played by the Comets. Season 2015 Weekly Wrap – Edition 5 After a spirited pre game talk, the boys went on to the field 2 players down and with a lot to prove to themselves. A hard game of football was won because they played as a team who would fight for a win. Congratulations boys. A game well played. U15 Jets: Ajax 11.7 (73) def East Sandringham 1.8 (14) Goals: Kaplan 3, Davis 2, Gutnick, Kupshik, Pat, Procel, Roth, Tenenbaum Best: Braverman, Gabriel, Gutnick, Kaplan, Procel, Zeimer Match Report For the second week in a row the Jets kept the opposition scoreless in the first quarter. An intense 4 quarter effort on a glorious winter day saw us through to a good victory and an energetic rendition of the club song. ***Mazeltov to Yonah Gutnick on his first goal!*** U16’s: St Peters Bentleigh 10.11 (71) def Ajax 5.11 (41) Goals: Beaconsfield 2, Liberman, Marks, Rosham. Best: Bassat, Herskope, Jacks, Liberman, Marks, Shenker Match Report A pretty lack luster performance today. We started very flat and continued that way all day. The hard work was left to a few. If we think we are a serious finals contender have to contribute for four quarters every week. Just not good enough today. U17’s: Ajax 14.11 (95) def East Sandringham/Hampton 9.4 (58) Goals: Aufgang 4, Lipton 3, Paltiel 3, Cohen 2, Fisher 2 Best: Aufgang, Bookman, Cohen, Davis, Kluwgant, Paltiel Match Report 1 rotation all day and a number of setbacks but our first div 1 game ends up a win. Huge effort from the boys. Onwards and upwards from here. Thanks to Nick and Dean for holding the fort. Round 5 Milestones Round 5 of Season 2015 saw these boys register personal milestones. 50 GAMES Indiana Briskin (U12 Comets) Aden Katz (U12 Comets) Joshua Lindell (U12 Jets) Cobi Chrapot (U14 Comets) (Although Cobi didn’t play on Sunday in Round 5 he played his 50th game in Round 4 by playing 2 games in that round). Season 2015 Weekly Wrap – Edition 5 100 (and +) GAMES Ryley Michelson (U15 Comets) (Ryley actually played his 100th a few weeks ago and is now sitting on 101 games) Sonny Moshinsky (U15 Comets) (Like Ryley, Sonny also played his 100th a few weeks ago). Gideon Wise (U15 Comets) (In his 100th game Gid and his teammates celebrated his 100th with a 5 goal win).
