There will be a special auction at “Broadway & Beyond” on Monday night, September 26th at the Alex Theatre in Glendale. This once-in-a-lifetime package includes airfare and hotel for two. You don’t want to miss this! Spotlight on weSPARK Volunteer Evelyn Frenkel Evelyn Frenkel first came to weSPARK as a guest. “I have the BRCA gene and had to make a decision about getting a fourth lumpectomy or a bilateral mastectomy,” she says. At first, Evelyn was scared of what lay ahead. “I started seeing [Guest Services Manager] Bonnie Franklin to help with this huge decision,” she says. “I attended Hypnotherapy with Connie Betterton and Qi Gong with Ed Sullivan.” Photographed by Patricia von Ah Inside... Some of my favorite moments have been putting together a team for the Run/Walk and helping to sell tickets for Poker.” Evelyn has made an impression. But, as she sees it, she is just trying to help others. “When I meet other patients needing support, I tell them about weSPARK. I want to make sure the legacy of weSPARK is there for the next person who needs it and so on.” 2 Nancy Allen, Board Member Arthur Toretzky and Jason Alexander Celebrity Winners Mimi Rogers and Ryan Stiles The Jason Alexander Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament It was time to ante up after the cards were dealt on Sunday, March 13th for weSPARK’s Annual Jason Alexander Poker Tournament at the historic Sportsmen’s Lodge hosted by board member Arthur Toretzky. The sold out event was a huge success and included an array of celebrities, professional poker players and community members all there to raise money for weSPARK. Celebrities trying their hand at the winning prizes included Mimi Jason Alexander and City Controller Wendy Gruehl Rogers, Ryan Stiles, Lou Diamond Phillips, Jennifer Tilly, Jason Alexander and Cheryl Hines. Also in attendance was professional Poker player and champion Annie Duke playing with board member Missy Halperin, who celebrated her birthday with a royal flush. And while poker shark celebs Ryan Stiles and Mimi Rogers made it to the final table, it was local players Jim Cohan and David Golden that took top prize. Already, we have celebrated two thrilling events, Poker in March and Golf in May. Both events were a success and we were so grateful to see old friends and meet new ones. But, there is still so much to come with this year’s Broadway Show scheduled for Monday night, September 26th and the Run/Walk taking place on Sunday, November 13th. Last year’s Show was a hit, with rave reviews still pouring in and the Run/Walk made its mark as we welcomed more runners and walkers than ever before. This year, don’t miss the opportunity to join the weSPARK community at both of these events. And on the subject, I have been thinking a lot about community this year and how strong the weSPARK community has grown; where we have come from, and what we have accomplished. Our community is so important to us. At weSPARK, we look at it as a family and like a family we have grown together and continue to grow. This year has offered us many examples of community support. Whether it’s the successful fundraiser led by the Boys’ Volleyball team at Notre Dame High School right up the street or the I SPY Photography Exhibit benefiting weSPARK, we are thankful to have a community like this one to call family. And it’s online as well! For those following us on networks like Facebook or Twitter, you have seen our online communication grow tremendously. We are proud to say that we are connected to our community stronger than ever before as we invite you to visit our new website and view the weSPARK videos on YouTube. Annual Wendie Jo Sperber Nancy Allen Executive Director Golf Classic Tournament It was a beautiful day at the private Spanish Hills Country Club in Camarillo on Monday, May 23rd. The sun was shining and there was a light breeze in the air as local golfers came out to support weSPARK at the Annual Wendie Jo Sperber Golf Classic Tournament. The event offered a day of golf for players among sloping hills and quiet ponds. Lunch was served on the green before players went into the clubhouse to participate in a silent auction cocktail hour. Actor and longtime weSPARK supporter Jack McGee from The Fighter kicked off the evening’s program, bringing energy and laughs to the room. The evening ended with a live auction and award presentation to the top teams. 1st Place Net Winning Team with Executive Director Nancy Allen “It was a beautiful day and a challenging course.” Ford Team with Jack McGee Putting Contest SUMMER TRIBUTES 4 In Honor of: Honoree... Cooking with the Teens What do you like about weSPARK? “It helps to understand how other people have that same thing as me. This is a place where you meet other kids like you.” – Gaby, 9 yrs. old “Its welcoming and we can be creative and have fun!” – JR, 11 years old “At weSPARK, we make friends.” “It’s accepting of who you are.” – Annie Rose, 5 yrs. old – Charlotte, 9 yrs. old What have you learned at weSPARK? “You don’t need to be afraid of cancer.” – Gaby, 9 yrs. old “We learned karate and we learned to have fun.” – JR, 11 yrs. old “We learned to accept our differences.” – Charlotte, 9 yrs. old “We learned karate and we “We learned how to make things.” learned to have fun.” – Jordan, 7 yrs. old -JR, 11 “We learned how to be nice to each other.” – Annie Rose, 5 yrs. old “You don’t need to be afraid of what kind of person you are.” – Chloe, 10 yrs. old Today at weSPARK, the teens are making stove top BBQ ribs. And they look delicious. Thanks to weSPARK’s newest program, Cooking with the Teens, teens who have a parent with or have lost a parent to cancer are learning how to make simple, delicious meals for themselves and their families. The group introduces Private Celebrity Chef David Marciano to the teen group. The group came together when one of the teens approached Executive Director Nancy Allen about learning how to cook. The kids’ group enjoys Cooking with Sylvia once a month and the teens wanted to learn how to cook meals and help take the burden off their families as they deal with cancer in their lives. The result has been meaningful for the group. For Marciano, the experience of cooking with teens whose families have been affected by cancer has been gratifying. “What has been most rewarding is [the teens] willingness to participate and learn,” he says. “I have been cheffing for many years and there are times when I’m preparing a dish they have never tried or experienced and though they seem a tad reluctant about experiencing it, once they try it, they are like ‘Wow, this is really good.’” In just a few weeks, Marciano has seen the group take ownership of the cooking lessons. “Everything David makes is delicious. And he makes it look pretty easy,” one of the teens says. “Watching the teens learn to cook has been better than I imagined,” Teen group facilitator Kim Tortorici says, “Not only are they completely engaged in the process, but it also empowers them to have some control over their lives that are often so uncertain and sometimes chaotic.” For their first class the teens cooked pasta primavera. Today, the ribs (one of the teen’s favorites) are the center of attention. There are smiles aplenty and a few “oos” and “aas” as the teens taste their creations. Everyone agrees, delicious! Thanks to our Community We would like to thank the following local businesses who have supported weSPARK Cancer Support Center. Whether by donating items or offering a discount, they have helped keep our services free. It was an exciting afternoon on April 7th when the local fundraiser was held at Notre Dame High School’s Gymnasium, just minutes from weSPARK. weSPARK Cancer Support Center is proud to introduce newly elected Board President Michael Hand. Hand, Brokerage Manager at TBG Danco, has been a longtime supporter and board member of weSPARK since 2005. His dedication to the organization has brought him to the forefront as he now takes on this exciting new leadership role. “In planning a fundraiser for [the] volleyball team, I could Judy Kain not think of a more deserving organization than weSPARK,” Kain said. “I wanted to raise as much money as we could to help this amazing, nurturing community that helps so many.” We welcome Michael as he helps shape weSPARK’s future There was a strong sense of that community in the air as families from Notre Dame and volleyball rivals Crespi High School participated in a silent and live auction. All auction items and food were donated for the event and actors David Cowgill (Friday Night Lights) and David Koechner (Anchorman) helped present to the winners. The debut of artist Liliana Morgan at this year’s I Spy With My Plastic Eye II photography exhibit was unique. As an emerging artist and honor roll student at Curtis School, 11 year old Liliana was excited to be showing her work to the public as part of MOPLA (Month of Photography Los Angeles). She was also excited to be donating the proceeds of her sale to weSPARK. Local teen Frankie Manes was there and explained “we chose weSPARK because we knew what a special place it was and how much they did for the community and those Notre Dame presents weSPARK with Check who are in need of help dealing with cancer. After seeing where the money went to and who I was helping I felt a great sense of accomplishment and that I made a difference.” Working with fellow board members, Hand is committed to ensuring that weSPARK’s programs remain free and available to the local community as he steps into the role of Board President. It is his strong sense of camaraderie that will lead weSPARK into the next decade. I SPY and Liliana Morgan Liliana Morgan and Astor Morgan Kain was excited about the results of the event, saying, “Not only did we raise over 5,100 dollars, but we also raised awareness in the community of weSPARK’s presence. It was a win win!!!” This is the second year the I Spy With My Plastic Eye exhibition has donated proceeds from the event to weSPARK. The exhibit was brought to life by local photographer, Astor Morgan and A&I Photographic, and featured work from an array of artists using plastic cameras to create the images. Curated by Astor Morgan, the show’s tagline is, “Paying homage to the plastic lens in the hands of creative people.” weSPARK presents MyBridge4LifeTM your online community for patients, caregivers, and supporters. During the event, guests were given the opportunity to purchase a fine art book, featuring the exhibit, and printed by A&I Books, with proceeds going to weSPARK. In addition, contributing artists sold their work at discounted prices, with proceeds from their sales benefiting the families of weSPARK Cancer Support Center. Build Your Bridge Plan Now. The class is part of Tower’s new Cancer Support Network, which brings together a variety of instructors from different local cancer organizations to provide free classes, including Guided Imagery, Yoga, a writing group and more. Vice President of Business Development & Radiation Oncology Services, Steve Shore, has seen the program grow since its inception and said, “when we were looking to develop the program here we wanted the top of the line.” He added that “it was the reputation of weSPARK that attracted Tower to weSPARK.” ark alive at w eep the sp k eSPAR U K YO the Torchbearers living in wholeness...building hope for tomorrow Please become a Torchbearer and help support weSPARK!
