WELCOME
MY ROOTS, MY REVOLUTION – this powerful rallying cry is the theme
of our 2012-13 season. It says, in effect: I claim who I am, where I
come from, all the things that are packed inside me, my ethnicity,
heritage, culture, upbringing, values. And I claim my own vision of a
world I want to bring about, even if it requires struggle and sacrifice.
Above all, it says these two things are connected: my inner being and
my personal revolution are fused, and I could no more deny one as
deny the other.
Our season is filled with tremendous humor, colorful locales, a rainbow
of perspectives, and great depth of feeling. Its characters trace their
roots to Puerto Rico, India, Korea, Africa, Russia, Maine, California,
and outer space. But all of them contribute to the melting pot that is
America. Their revolutions may be as tiny as a family vacation or as
big as a whole new form of art.
We begin with a play set in the unlikeliest of places: a wrestling ring.
Kristoffer Diaz’s hip hop-inspired The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity
uses the larger-than-life world of professional wrestling as a metaphor
for the marketplace of America. When we buy a ticket or a video game
or album, the play asks, what values and images and stereotypes
are we buying into? Who is on top and who is on the bottom in these
stereotypes? Is there any way to change this and still satisfy the
hungry crowd?
Woolly’s brilliant artists will pour their hearts and souls into questions
like these throughout the coming season. But you complete the
process. Our work onstage, beyond its sheer entertainment value,
is intended to raise timely questions; and we encourage you to
pick up the conversation. There are post-show discussions after
every performance of Chad Deity. There are provocative activities
in the lobby, in-depth forums in our House Lights Up series, lively
perspectives on woollymammothblog.com, and opportunities to
express your views via e-mail, Facebook, and Twitter.
Your involvement and support gives meaning to everything we do
at Woolly Mammoth. Thanks for being here, and we look forward to
seeing you throughout this Woolly season.

What Makes Woolly Unique?
For 32 seasons, Woolly Mammoth has built
a reputation as “Washington’s most daring
theatre company” (The New York Times) and
has become one of the most influential new
play theatres in the nation. By throwing the full
might of our producing power behind risky new
work, we’ve helped launch the careers of major
American playwrights including Sarah Ruhl,
Nicky Silver, Amy Freed, and Danai Gurira. We
maintain our own company of artists, and we
frequently collaborate with other companies
to expand our skills and our impact. Most
importantly, we work in partnership with our
audience to try new theatrical innovations and
explore their relevance to our city and our world.
Your response—in person or online—helps
shape the future of American theatre. Please

The Babyface and the Heel
By Miriam Weisfeld, Dramaturg
In order to deliver an emotional catharsis, pro wrestling “puts the heat” on a bad guy,
who baits the audience until they’re desperate for the good guy to vanquish him. Negative
stereotypes present ready-made “heels” that promoters have famously exploited. Once in
a blue moon, a wrestler is able to successfully transcend the stereotype that defines his
character and achieve stardom based on his own personality. But – as playwright Kristoffer
Diaz points out – even the most charismatic babyface must rely on a cartoonish evil heel to
complete his story.
Hulk Hogan, possibly the most famous 1980s character of the World
Wrestling Federation (now known as World Wrestling Entertainment),
is played by Terry Gene Bollea. He became the WWF World Champion
in 1984 when he defeated the Iron Sheik at Madison Square Garden in a
match that lasted just over five minutes. The Hulk was inducted into the
WWE hall of fame after winning twelve World Championships; he has
now expanded his career into acting and reality television.
Introduced in 2000, John Cena is one of WWE’s biggest contemporary
stars. Representing an honorable, down-to-earth hero from Boston,
Cena updated Hulk Hogan’s cartoonish American iconography. He also
won twelve World Championships, and has expanded his career into
film, rapping, and high-profile charity appearances for the Make-a-Wish
Foundation.
The Rock, played by Dwayne Johnson, made his WWE debut in 1996
and has become one of the most successful pro wrestlers of all time.
Repeatedly turning from “babyface” to “heel” and back again, The Rock
is a master of promos and witty repartee. The son of a Samoan mother
and African American father (the wrestler Rocky Johnson), and nephew
of the negatively stereotyped Wild Samoan tag team, The Rock uniquely
balances a racially ambiguous identity. His malleable image has expanded into a wildly
successful Hollywood career.
The Wild Samoans, played by Arthur “Afa” Anoa’i and his brother Leati
“Sika” Anoa’i, wrestled with the WWF in the early 1980s. Although they
emigrated from Samoa to San Francisco early in life, their wrestling
promos showed them communicating with savage grunts and devouring
raw fish. Off-screen, the family later trained and managed several
successful wrestlers including their nephew, The Rock.
The Iron Sheik, the WWE character of Iranian pro wrestler Hossein
Khosrow Ali Vaziri, played the villain to high-profile 1980s heroes such
as Hulk Hogan. He returned to the WWE in the early 1990s as an Iraqi
sympathizer during the Gulf War. Famous for using the “camel clutch” as
a finisher, he still occasionally appears in promos, films, and television to
deliver profanity-laced insults against Americans.
One of the most controversial and short-lived heels in WWE history,
Muhammad Hassan was an Arab-American character embittered by
racial profiling and prejudice in the wake of the 9-11 attacks. Played
by Italian-American Marc Copani, Muhammad Hassan feuded with
many all-American “faces” including Hulk Hogan and John Cena. His
WWE contract came to an abrupt end following a notorious 2005 match
featuring Muslim “prayer” and masked terrorist-like henchmen, which unfortunately, aired
just after the suicide bombings of the London Underground system.
Is Wrestling Fake?
It’s complicated. During a 1989 hearing,
the World Wrestling Federation
testified before the New Jersey
Senate that professional wrestling is
“entertainment,” and that participants
“are trained to avoid serious injury”
(The New York Times). Many observers
took this as an admission that wrestling
is pure theatre, and not a dangerous
athletic feat.
In fact, both are true. Promoters,
writers, and wrestlers create
elaborate characters and storylines
that determine the rise and fall of
champions. A storyline includes the
“promo”– an inflammatory statement by
a wrestler about his opponent before a
match – and a “finisher”– the distinctive
final move with which a wrestler wins.
Each move the wrestlers make between
the promo and the finisher, however, is
improvised—and the audience itself is
an essential ingredient. Wrestlers listen
closely to the fans’ response to each
move, constantly recalculating how to
build suspense and deliver the finisher
in the most satisfying way.
Categorizing pro wrestling as
“entertainment” as opposed to a
sport allowed the WWF to avoid the
regulations – and taxes – that govern
athletic organizations. However, the
entertainment value of pro wrestling
goes hand in hand with the risk of
“serious injury” that accompanies every
move. Each “bump,” or fall onto the
wood and steel floor of the wrestling
ring, delivers the force equivalent to a
twenty-five mile-per-hour car crash.
Wrestlers must incorporate technique,
audience feedback, and cues from each
other to make a split-second decision
about how one of them will take that
bump. It’s a perilous dance that looks
like a war; and for playwright Kristoffer
Diaz, it’s a symbol of our nation itself.
On the second day of rehearsals for
The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity,
several actors noticed the toll their
first wrestling lesson took on their
bodies: whiplash, burst blood vessels,
migraines, and soreness. James Long,
the lone professional wrestler in the
cast, smiled and pointed out: “Y’all are
the ones who keep saying it’s fake!”

House Lights Up
Woolly wants its explosive engagement with you to reach past the footlights and into
real life. As such, we are proud to introduce “House Lights Up,” a series of highprofile panel discussions, lectures, debates, film-screenings, concerts, readings, and
other special events, to be curated by Woolly’s Connectivity Department. This series
will harness the vibrant viewpoints of Washington DC to illuminate the ideas in our
plays. It will also apply Woolly’s values of innovation and civic dialogue to life in our
city, encouraging a multiplicity of perspectives and providing audiences with direct
access to our artists. “House Lights Up” will mainly address themes and content
presented in our seasons, but will also, at times, reflect on current events important
to the DC community and the nation. For details on upcoming related events, visit
woollymammoth.net.
A New Post Show Conversation Model
Do you ever leave the theatre with lingering questions or feisty responses to what
you saw? Woolly is re-vamping its post-show discussion schedule to include a
conversation after every performance of The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity. These
audience exchanges will be held in the lower lobby and facilitated by a member of
Woolly’s community. What did you see? Why did it look like that? What did it mean to
you? Come discuss these and other questions with your fellow audience members.

FREE THE BEAST! will support the production of 25 new plays
over a ten-year period (2013-2022)
It will allow Woolly to bust out of the cage and take our work to new levels, supporting long-term
commissions, research, and workshops that give playwrights the time to focus on their writing in
collaboration with actors, directors, and designers. It will increase rehearsal time for our actors
and support ambitious plans by our scenic, lighting, and costume designers. It will enable new
collaborations among the members of our superb company and guest artists, leading to work that
fulfills Woolly’s unique mission to challenge our audiences and engage deeply with our community.

FREE THE BEAST!
Free the Beast! will support the production of 25 new plays over a ten-year period: 2013-2022. Some will be commissioned from
scratch; others developed from early drafts. All will be given the time and tending they require to reach maturity, drawing from a
menu of support including innovative commissioning models, comprehensive research, readings and workshops, larger casts, extra
rehearsals, increased technical resources, and the expertise of Woolly’s Company of Artists. Most importantly, all will receive full
productions on Woolly Mammoth’s stage. We would like to thank the following donors for their generous support of Free the Beast!.

what’s next at woolly
Friends,
Next up at Woolly, we travel across the globe to the
world’s most secretive regime—North Korea—for the
World Premiere of Mia Chung’s You For Me For You.
This gorgeous and quirky new play follows two sisters as
they attempt to escape the Democratic People’s Republic
of Korea. Unlike the “hyphenated American” wrestlers in
Chad Deity, these North Korean sisters are brand new to
the United States. They don’t even speak English, making
it even harder to navigate the tricky technology, customs,
social cues, and mores that we all take for granted. The play
illustrates the astonishing determination and perseverance
of those who walk this bewildering path, leaving their
families and homeland behind in search of a better life.
You For Me For You represents the very first production to
benefit from the support of Free The Beast, a campaign that
is raising $4 million to support 25 World Premieres at Woolly
Mammoth over the next ten years. With the support of this
fund, we have been able to build a much more intensive
development path for Mia’s play than normal, including a
3-day workshop at Woolly this past June; a month-long
workshop, produced in association with Ma-Yi Theatre
Company, in New York in August; and an extended five-week
rehearsal process leading to our November premiere. Free
The Beast has already proven to be a game-changer, and we
are looking forward to sharing the results of these artistic
investments over the next decade. You can learn more about
Free The Beast—and how you can support this effort—in
this program or on our website at woollymammoth.net.
Thanks for coming to Chad Deity, have a terrific fall, and we
will see you back here in November for You For Me For You.
Most sincerely,
Jeffrey Herrmann
