LETTER FROM
THE CHAIR &
PRESIDENT
It started with a bridge connecting
North and South across the
Chicago River. The Michigan
Avenue Bridge was completed
in 1920 as a part of the Plan of
Chicago, which called for a wide
boulevard that would flourish into
a bustling thoroughfare. This plan
was a major reason behind the
formation of the North Central
Business District Association, now
The Magnificent Mile® Association,
and we are proud to have
continued that legacy today. In fact,
our reach has expanded greatly
beyond our local leadership.
We have developed connections
on a global scale and are doing
business on the world stage.
What do you find when you explore The
Magnificent Mile today? Investment has spread to
all corners of the district—in every neighborhood
and across industries. More than fifty flagship
retailers offer an unparalleled customer
experience, from cutting-edge facades to
technological advances, exclusive collections and
unique amenities in their stores. Our major anchor
stores are in the process of finishing complete
upgrades and renovations, while new retailers are
vying for space on The Magnificent Mile as soon
as it becomes available.
World-famous hospitality brands like the Hyatt
Regency Chicago have undertaken major
renovations to cater to regional, national and—
more than ever—international visitors. Extensive
remodeling to 333 North Michigan Avenue
has reinforced Chicago’s business leaders’
commitment to preservation guidelines and
popular attractions have installed state-of-the-art
experiences 94 stories above street level. From
North Michigan Avenue, along Oak Street and
beyond, we applaud the continued commitment
of property owners and tenants to make bold
choices as they invest in our success.
When they formed their Plan of Chicago,
architects Daniel Burnham and Edward Bennett
looked abroad to historic cities like Paris for
inspiration. Today, we are making history on
The Magnificent Mile. International tourism
professionals and media converged in Chicago
in April 2014 for IPW, the travel industry’s
premier international marketplace and largest
generator of travel to the US. The Museum of
Contemporary Art welcomed exhibits like David
Bowie Is, on display exclusively at the Museum of
Contemporary Art during its US tour.
We are honored to host the 2015 James Beard
Foundation Awards, which showcase several of
our award-winning restaurants. And for the first
time ever, the NFL Draft will be held in Chicago
in 2015. Taking stock of the unique developments
along The Magnificent Mile, we are confident
that our district is ready to welcome these special
events and more!
We see a district filled with opportunity. Strong
relationships with city officials have resulted in
groundbreaking support of our beautification
efforts, including the funding of our streets’
median planters. Creative collaborations between
members support major marketing events like
The BMO Harris Bank Magnificent Mile Lights
Festival® and The Magnificent Mile Shopping
Festival™ presented by MasterCard®, which
transform the district and create unforgettable
memories. More than 20 annual member events
ensure quality networking and comradery within
our volunteer community.
We will continue to build bridges as we prepare
for the next 100 years. We hope you will join us!

PLANNING & ADVOCACY DIVISION
2014 HIGHLIGHTS
The mission of The Magnificent Mile® Association’s
Planning and Advocacy Division is to create value
for businesses and institutions in The Magnificent
Mile District by protecting and enhancing the
physical environment and advocating on behalf
of its members. Members on the eight Division
Committees include architects, attorneys, real
estate, transportation and security professionals
and others with interests in various fields. The
Division has worked with stakeholders through
various economic times all the while maintaining
and enhancing the pedestrian experience on
‘One of the Great Avenues of the World’.
SPECIAL SERVICE AREA
(SSA) ADVISORY COMMITTEE
& MEDIAN PLANTER
LANDSCAPING TASK FORCE
In January, the Association formed an Advisory
Committee charged with determining if a Special
Service Area (SSA) should be enacted for North
Michigan Avenue to fund several desired items
including the landscaping and maintenance of
the 22 median planters along North Michigan
Avenue from Oak Street to the Chicago River.
After a determination in May by the Advisory
Committee not to pursue the establishment
of an SSA, the Association formed a Median
Planter Landscaping Task Force which began
to investigate alternate funding sources for the
median planter landscaping. After discussing
the funding situation with Alderman Reilly, the
Association received confirmation that, beginning
Summer of 2015, the City will assume the
responsibility of funding and provision of seasonal
landscaping and maintenance of the median
planters on an ongoing basis.
PROJECT REVIEW
COMMITTEE
In 2014, the Project Review Committee reviewed
and provided comments on five developments
including two residential towers, a hotel and
a new university research building. Upcoming
reviews of several new construction projects
in the District is a positive sign of renewed
economic vitality in 2015.
SIGN AND URBAN DESIGN
COMMITTEE
The Sign and Urban Design Committee reviewed
49 sign and facade changes in 2014. The large
number of reviews by this committee reflect
the numerous new stores which opened in the
neighborhood in 2014 and several stores and
other buildings which upgraded their existing
signage and facades. In July, City representatives
met with Association members and area
non-members to explain the regulations and
enforcement of the Sign Ordinance.
MICHIGAN AVENUE ‘BY THE
NUMBERS’ COMMITTEE
After the initial release of the ‘By the Numbers’
report in 2012, the Association released an
updated June, 2014 version of the document
which was created to compile economic,
physical and social data and information on
The Magnificent Mile District and to provide
continuous updates to the Association’s data
resource Michigan Avenue ‘By the Numbers.’
‘By the Numbers’ has been designed as a
web-based report with the capability of
ongoing updates and revisions.
PUBLIC WAY COMMITTEE
In 2014, the Public Way Committee focused on
identifying and reporting area infrastructure issues
and conducted four seasonal beautification walks
with awards presented to winning properties
at the Association’s September Membership
Luncheon. The Committee continued to address
the variety of uses on North Michigan Avenue
and area sidewalks and parkways, developing
ongoing protocols for how these shared public
spaces are utilized and maintained.
TRAFFIC AND
TRANSPORTATION
COMMITTEE
A primary focus of the Traffic and Transportation
Committee in 2014 was to review
recommendations in the City’s Central Area
Action Plan which identified and set priorities
for numerous transportation related projects in
The Magnificent Mile District. The committee
also focused on a wide variety of issues including
review of plans for Bus Rapid Transit routes in
the Central Area, the initiation of a new River
North/Streeterville Transit Alternatives Study, and
involvement on special focus groups reviewing
plans for the planned reconstruction of Lake
Shore Drive.
SECURITY AND EMERGENCY
PREPAREDNESS COMMITTEE
The Security and Emergency Preparedness
Committee continued to provide pertinent area
information to member businesses in 2014.
In October, an information meeting was held
focusing on retail theft and security issues within
the North Michigan Avenue District and included
information on several legislative initiatives
including the State’s new Conceal Carry law which
took effect in early 2014. The committee worked
closely with both the 18th and 1st Police Districts
to address ongoing issues of homelessness and
panhandling on area sidewalks.
21ST CENTURY PLANNING
COMMITTEE
Guidance for this Committee stems from
The Association’s Vision 2025 Planning Policy
document which was released in 2012. In 2014,
the Committee initiated a planning effort to
identify both short and long-term measures
to improve the physical condition of the area
beneath the Michigan Avenue viaduct and other
raised streets in the District.
ADVOCACY COMMITTEE
The Advocacy Committee addressed several
issues of importance to Magnificent Mile
Association members in 2014 and continued to
strengthen ongoing relationships with Aldermen
Brendan Reilly and Robert Fioretti and other
elected officials and heads of City departments.
This Committee and the initiatives undertaken
by all Division Committees have broadened their
outreach to address the approved changes to
the City’s new ward boundaries which began
implementation in January, 2013.

QUARTINO
9 YEAR MEMBER
CHEF JOHN COLETTA
Q. You’ve participated in A Magnificent Taste for two years now.
How are special events like this important to your business in
the district?
Any time we can reach out to the community and come in direct
contact with our customer base, it can be a benefit both for them and
the business. For Quartino to reach out and participate in the fiber
of the community in a highly visible way gives us the opportunity to
develop those genuine, long-lasting connections that are integral to
our operations.
Q. In your time with the Association—participating in events
and collaborating with other members—what experiences stand
out to you? How have you found value in The Magnificent Mile®
community?
The biggest experience, collectively, is the camaraderie established
among our neighbors, that come-and-go culture in sharing our
experiences but also with the goal of driving business on everyone’s
mind. When you can participate with like-minded and light-spirited
associates, you are able to reap tremendous benefits. The Magnificent
Mile® synergizes the entire community with the goal to grow business in
a very focused and positive manner. I think that those are the true core
values that everyone shares.
Q. As you know, Chicago has made great strides as a global
destination in recent years. How have you seen your customer
base evolve?
It wasn’t that long ago that Chicago didn’t have a wealth of
international visitors, but if you walk along the avenue today, you can
overhear 7 different languages. When you have European, Asian,
South American and other sorts of travelers visiting the city, they all
need a place to sleep, eat and unwind. And, with that, they bring their
own certain standards and demands, which present an opportunity
for us to display our abilities. We want customers to feel the richness
unique to Chicago, but also, we want to reach that higher bar set by
these varying groups to have the net result of landing more brand
spokespeople worldwide. This continues to proliferate and grow our
business—many of our customers were told to come to Quartino on
the recommendation of friends in Spain, France and beyond, so the
opportunities and results speak for themselves.
Q. Chicago’s gourmet scene is world-famous. Where do you see the
restaurant experience heading on The Magnificent Mile®?
As the restaurants evolve and the customers’ expectations similarly
increase, you will see restaurants that will be borne out of trying to
meet those demands. I foresee restaurants straying from innovation
and aiming for authenticity. Our diverse customers want to see home
cooking perfected, which has a cultural significance that they yearn
for, no matter where they go. This even extends to wine bottled from
particular vineyards—it’s all about finding comfort, and dining venues
will want to capitalize on that more.
Q. If someone was interested in joining The Magnificent Mile®
Association, what would you share with them?
You don’t just spend a year in this association—you spend years
growing alongside everyone. You only get out of it what you put in, and
really, a service industry member has everything to gain with this level
of healthy and friendly collaboration. The Magnificent Mile Association
brings the entire business community together and provides an internal
network where we can be an asset to one another. It’s an ‘in’ on every
level you can imagine, and the best part is that we all share a passion
for excellence. We want to make Magnificent Mile’s customers into
customers for life, no matter where they come from.

HYATT REGENCY CHICAGO
24 YEAR MEMBER
PATRICK DONELLY, GENERAL MANAGER
Q. How have you seen The Magnificent Mile® evolve in your time at
the Hyatt Regency Chicago?
As an hotelier, you always notice the changes that occur from your front
doors. There is noticeably a positive change that has happened along
The Magnificent Mile, and that is the influx in restaurants, hotels and retail
shops. It’s great to see Chicago’s Magnificent Mile® thriving and even better
to be present in the pulse of this great city.
Q. More specifically, Chicago has made great strides as a global
destination in recent years. How have you seen your customer
base evolve?
As we continue to evolve as a hotel, so does our customer base. We are
fortunate enough to have over 228,000 square feet of meeting space, so
naturally, our customer base is meeting and convention focused, but with
a location in the heart of The Magnificent Mile®, we see many transient
travelers as well.
Q. How has the customer experience adapted to the times?
Technology would be the key focus here. As we see an influx in social media
and more specifically the digital world, we have to adjust to the customer
experience by offering more options to our guests who are tech savvy. We
have iPads to check in guests, we provide touch-screen navigation on digital
displays throughout the hotel and we have the most current, up to date Wi-Fi
infrastructure to accommodate large convention groups, to name a few.
Q. The Hyatt has almost completed a fabulous renovation. Can you
speak to the motivation behind this major investment?
When we first opened our doors, we were one of a few hotels – people now
have many options to choose from when they visit Chicago. By renovating
our lobby, we are kept at the forefront of today’s changing style, technology
and demand. We made our restaurants more visible, our lobby more inviting
for guests to engage, we added charging stations to accommodate the
social guest – we updated our overall guest experience to accommodate
today’s traveler. We also kept in mind that we are seeing more women
travelers, so we tailored restaurant menus to reflect lighter offerings and
smaller portions and our in-room amenities keep the female traveler in mind.
Q. You are very active in the city of Chicago. Why is civic engagement so
important to you (and the Hyatt brand)?
Civic engagement is vital in making smart, sound choices for our city. In
staying active in the city, I allow myself to participate in sound discussions
that eventually become major decisions for the city.
Q. In your time with the Association—participating in events and
collaborating with other members—what interactions stick out to you the
most? How have you found value in The Magnificent Mile® community?
When numbers band together, you become a force when talking about
change in the city. When you join an association, you help change the city.
Q. If someone was interested in joining The Magnificent Mile®
Association, what would you share with them?
If you are not involved, you can’t be on the outside telling everybody what
should happen. You need to become involved in an association to get your
voice heard and have an impact on decisions made for this city.

Q. How have you found value in The Magnificent Mile®
community? In your time with the Association—participating in
events and collaborating with other members—what memories
stand out to you?
The business partnerships we have formed with our fellow members is
a bond like no other. We all have one goal, and that’s to make Chicago
the greatest city to visit! As Patrick Donelly of Hyatt Regency Chicago
stated, “… we are not in competition with each other for the best
hotel, finest restaurant and best shopping; we are in competition with
New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta and other major cities.”
Q. If someone was interested in joining The Magnificent Mile®
Association, what would you share with them?
If you’d like get involved and make a contribution to Chicago’s future,
the members of this association will value your efforts and, in return,
your business and personal goals will soar. This is not an association
where simply being a member counts. You must get involved by
serving on a committee or working an event, as this is where you find
the best opportunities.
CHICAGO ARCHITECTURE FOUNDATION
20 YEAR MEMBER
LYNN OSMOND, PRESIDENT/CEO
Q. What are a few of your favorite things about
The Magnificent Mile®?
The impressive architecture along Michigan Avenue is some of the
best in the city. From the Art Deco Palmolive Building and the modern
John Hancock Center, to the historic Tribune Tower and iconic Wrigley
Building – this collection of buildings are truly emblematic of Chicago’s
excellence.
Q. How have you seen The Magnificent Mile evolve in your time
with the Association?
The increased awareness and relevance of the Magnificent Mile to the
city has brought increased tourism and new buildings and storefronts,
which has been fantastic to see. Michigan Avenue is now truly
recognized as one of the greatest boulevards in the world and is now a
must-see destination for tourists and locals alike.
