Both are in critical condition as of Tuesday. NEWARK Two Tarrant County men were severely injured in a plane crash in south Wise County Sunday morning. Dennis Gartman, 39, of North Richland Hills, and Jerry Baker, 63, of Fort Worth were in critical condition Tuesday morning. The two-passenger plane crashed at about 8:45 p.m. near homes on Private Road 4810 near Keeter. Dusty Lamance was working in his front yard when the crash occurred. “It sounded like someone ran into my house with a car,” he said. While he didn’t see the crash, he noticed his horses looking in the direction of the woods in front of his property, and he ran in that direction. He quickly checked on the two occupants and ran back to his house to get his wife, Whitney, a paramedic with Wise County. “I was making breakfast, and he ran into the house and told me to call 911,” Whitney said. Whitney and Dusty extricated Gartman and Baker before the medics were on the scene. Two helicopters were called to the scene, and the men were flown to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. Witnesses said the plane was flying low and was in a flat spin before it crashed in the patch of woods. Q E-mail Mandy at mbourgeois@ wcmessenger.com. WISE COUNTY City might disband police dept. By BRANDON EVANS In an effort to conserve funds and increase street patrols, the Newark city council is considering elimination of its police force. “Our current setup with the police is not working,” said Newby. “(Officer) Troy (Crow) is the only one really on the streets now.” The department is composed of Crow and Chief Terry Fiene, who works part time and is unpaid. “My idea is to have (Rhome) police for us,” Newby said. “They’d patrol and answer our calls — they answer a big percentage of our calls now anyway.” “They have asked if we’d be interested,” said Rhome Police Chief James Rose. “Times are tough. We’d be willing to help. There’s no contract, no anything. We’ve just agreed to meet.” Continued on page 3A WISE COUNTY Officials make beeline to oppose T-line Messenger photos by Joe Duty SALUTE — Several Wise County groups marked Memorial Day with ceremonies honoring veterans of current and past conflicts. Several ceremonies marked Memorial Day Monday, including the Wise County Veterans Group’s ceremony at the Wise County Veterans Memorial Park in Decatur. The program invited several veterans to speak on wars from the Civil War to World War II. Special guest Lt. Gen. Richard Carey of Rockwall reminded the crowd that while Americans celebrated Memorial Day at home, the day was just another day to soldiers deployed to battlefields overseas. Bramlett served in the Pacific, including the Battle of Peleliu. “I was just a kid, like all the other guys. Everyone was 19 to 22 or 23,” he said. “The Big Wigs said we needed that landing strip in Peleliu.” Peleliu would prove costly, and Bramlett’s division suffered many casualties in the war. “The 81st division almost ceased to be. We had a hard time getting across Peleliu,” he said. As a medic, Bramlett watched many men die on the small island. “I saw a lot of things I’ll never forget — young guys like myself WEEKEND WRAP-UP The sheriff’s department kept law and order at Wise County Park over the holiday weekend. While Troy Hayes and C.B. The ceremony also recognized Wise County’s connection to World War I, the Spanish-American War and the Civil War. Manshadow Waylett honored Samuel Sampler, a Decatur native who is the only person from Wise County to have received the Congressional Medal of Honor. Sampler was a corporal in the Army during World War I. McKay spoke of his grandfather and his wife’s grandfather who fought in the Spanish-American War, and W.B. Woodruff discussed four companies from Wise County who fought in the Civil War. The Wise County Veterans Council held a program at the Decatur Civic Center Monday afternoon, where Decatur Mayor Joe Lambert recalled the sacrifices made in defense of freedom. “Many have marched off to war, and many have never returned,” he said. Guest speaker Susan Avery, a clinical social worker, gave a history of what is now called “Memorial Day” and suggested the true meaning of the day may be getting lost. “The day was originally May 30,” she said. “A return to the original day could return the solemn spirit to Memorial Day.” The North Texas Honor Guard ended the program with a 21-gun salute followed by the playing of Taps. World War II veteran Tal Morrison spoke at the dedication of the Rhome Veterans Park at 2 p.m. Monday. The park was completed late last year. (Information provided by the Wise County Sheriff’s Office.) and it had to be turned in to the PUC by June 2. The proposed line would enter Wise County just north of Roberts Road, follow Denton Creek and exit the county just north of U.S. 380 at County Line Road. Commissioner Danny White said several Precinct 1 landowners with property near Denton Creek have already sent protest letters to the PUC. “This is all about moving wind power from North Texas …” said Burns. “… but they’re bypassing those windmills in Montague County.” Burns said if the current proposed route is used, other lines may have to be built to tie the Montague County windmills into the system. “We’ve had our share of regional transmission lines coming through from one place to another for the benefit of others,” said McElhaney. In other business, Sheriff David Walker reported that the animal control vehicles need major repairs. There are three vehicles, and two of them have more than 150,000 miles on them. Walker said he wasn’t sure it was cost effective to continue to put money into the vehicles. Commissioners took no action but did suggest Walker and Asset Manager Diana Alexander research the price of a new vehicle. Continued from page 1A If a contract is drawn up, Rose is confident they would have enough officers to adequately cover both cities. Rhome has six full-time officers and four reserves. “If it’s agreed upon (Newark) will contribute X amount of dollars, and with that we could hire another officer,” Rose said. He said the arrangement could improve coverage and response times for both cities. He said a Rhome officer would primarily patrol Newark in the evening. “The officers on duty in Rhome and Newark could back each other up,” Rose said. “We have the Sheriff’s Department for back up now and they are good partners, but they have such a large area to cover they are sometimes 15 minutes out.” He said Rhome officers would patrol in PIXLER Newark cars if the deal is made. “We’re not trying to take over,” Rose said. “They approached us in an effort to save money.” The mayor and council members are also considering elimination of Newark’s municipal court, which would dissolve the court clerk position and end the contract with its municipal judge, Manuel Valdez. “We could use Rhome’s court clerk and municipal judge,” Newby said. “We could save possibly $40,000 to $45,000 per year.” A committee composed of Newby and council members Bob Wells and Doug Anderson plan to discuss forging a contract with Rhome. The council discussed this in open session during a special called meeting Friday night. Although originally to be discussed in closed session, Newby said, “We don't have anything to hide,” and chose to make personnel matters public. The mayor cited decreased revenue from property tax and extensive costs in upgrading the water and sewer infrastructure for the proposed cost-saving measures. “We’re trying to come into compliance with TCEQ (Texas Commission on Environmental Quality),” Newby said. He predicts spending $200,000 in the next two years on various water and sewage projects, including installing a new lift station and creating alternate power sources for several lift stations and the wastewater treatment plant. Amy Cromer had no idea going into the meeting that her job was up for possible elimination. She has served as the Newark court clerk for nine years. “It would be a nice courtesy to at least know what is going on,” Cromer said. “I have a lot of experience in this position.” The council is also considering hiring a city manager and an assistant clerk in lieu of hiring a new city secretary in the wake of Tabitha Tucciarone announcing her decision to resign as city secretary. Tucciarone’s last day is set for June 18. “There’s quite a bit of information that comes through that office,” said council WELLS member Chana Massey. “The city will get to the point that we need a city manager. If we go towards that direction, we’ll get someone with more experience and education.” Wells said the current combined salaries of the court clerk and city secretary total $62,650 per year. “A city manager position is too high for my qualifications and an assistant clerk is too low,” Cromer said. “So my position is eliminated. “Whatever happens will happen. Everything will work itself out.” “I can’t say I’m happy,” said council member Laura Pixler when questioned about the prospect of eliminating city jobs. “But I’m saying to bring the budget down it has to be looked at. We’ve made promises not to raise taxes. We’re not going after anyone — we’re looking at all departments.” 3A Subscribe Online. www.wcmessenger.com/subscribe KAREN GARRETT I’D ENJOY HELPING YOU WITH YOUR NEW & USED- CAR NEEDS 940-62 940-6 27-2177 jameswood.com BUICK CHEVY GMC HYUNDAI YOUTH ART CLASSES Creative Art for ages 7 to 14 Classes times: 9:30-11:30am & 1:30-3:30pm Fridays with Robin Nobles 817-992-6485 email: [email protected] Saturdays with Morgan Brewer 940-389-9948 email: [email protected] Classes start June 18th Call or email instructor for more information and to register at the Cowgirl Ranch in Ponder SIGN UP NOW ! $130 for 4 sessions plus $25 one time material usage fee Farmers Market Every Saturday Starting June 5th Locally Grown Produce 9 a.m. - noon Joins us for homemade pie in the garden Black Creek Pumpkin Patch & Garden 2324 Old Decatur Road • Follow Signs 940-389-0517 NEWS BRIEF DRIVERS ED — Decatur’s drivers education classes begin Saturday, June 5. Falcon Heene was supposedly floating in a silver UFO-shaped balloon somewhere over Colorado. The story was at the top of Drudge Report’s page. Two co-workers were joking about the situation in the newsroom, and I turned to them and rather rudely said, “Why are you laughing? This isn’t funny!” My heart ached for the little boy floating helplessly in a balloon not meant for travel. I couldn’t bear to imagine what the parents were thinking or feeling. Later in the day, fellow to me that day – I was a reporter Brandon Evans parent. tried to comfort me. Parents have a different “It’s a hoax, Mandy,” set of emotions than nonhe said, reassuringly. parents. Before my son “There’s no way he’s in the was born in March 2009, I lived a life relatively balloon.” But I was glued to free of worry. But with my Internet news sites, and little boy came a long list later radio on my way of far-fetched scenarios home, hoping for any good that could somehow harm BOURGEOIS him. news on the whereabouts of the little boy. Finally, With all this worry it was revealed that the boy was constantly on my mind, I’ve found alive and well – he had spent the it hard to laugh at “baby” humor. day in the attic. When my husband and I watched It was a hoax. “The Hangover,” we struggled with This incident revealed something the Carlos character. Most people love Carlos, and what’s not to love? Carlos, so named by Zach Galifianakis’ character, is a baby found in the main characters’ hotel room closet. During his short appearance in the movie, Carlos rides in a car that is involved in a wreck without the benefit of a car seat, he is left in the back seat of the car while the men go inside a wedding chapel for a few minutes and he is hit in the head by a car door. My brother thought the Carlos scenes were hilarious. But my thoughts of the entire segment were more logical. Q Doesn’t he need to be fed? Q They can’t just put him in the back seat of the car like that! Q Don’t leave him in the car! Q Bradley Cooper’s character should know how to take care of a baby – he has a kid! Most recently, I was horrified to find an advertisement for twins on a local website. The adorable babies, pictured waving little American flags, were for sale for $12. While obviously a scam, I could find little to laugh about. Apparently parenthood has taken more than sleep and freedom – it has stolen my sense of humor. But it has replaced it with so much more. OTHER VIEWS Remember Jasper’s heart, not just hate By WILLIS WEBB For the last 50-plus years I edited and published community newspapers, the last 15 years of my career in Jasper. Jasper will be forever known as the place where three white men dragged a black man to death, one of the most horrific crimes in this nation’s history. Some called Jasper the gateway to scenic Lake Sam Rayburn, the largest man-made lake in Texas and one of the best bassfishing spots in the country. For the last dozen years, the first thing that pops into peoples’ minds is the brutal murder of James Byrd Jr. by a terrible trio – Bill King, Russell Brewer and WEBB Shawn Berry – on June 7, 1998. How does a chamber of commerce, a public relations firm or an economic development group counter the inevitable “first thought” at the mention of Jasper, Texas? You want to be able to tell them the involved story of the city’s heart and of the lengths to which the entire community went in order to heal, to see justice served and to reveal all of Jasper’s positive traits. How do you relate that in a brochure, in photos or any chamber of commerce handout? Or in a short, happenstance conversation with someone whose only thought is, “What a terrible place that must be.” For me, the effort must take place as often as the question is posed and with as much of the full story as the questioner is willing to hear. It begins with James Byrd Jr.’s family, a remarkable group – parents, five sisters, a brother and his children. They displayed an unparalleled strength of faith. That, along with the Byrd family’s uncommon grace and dignity, were the beacons for a community turned upside down and thrown into the international spotlight. The family called for calm and invited one and all to come mourn and worship with them. Within days, the ministers had organized a community service of healing, held on the county courthouse lawn. Blacks and whites cried together, worshipped together and hugged. It was a remarkably moving event. In the weeks that followed the funeral, those with healing and finding solutions in mind, took the lead and the city began an organized effort to identify problems and develop programs to further enhance progress in race relations. Jasper County’s justice system operated in a calm and deliberate manner with or without scores of news people and streets filled with two dozen microdish trucks. Despite the presence of hate groups from either extreme, life in Jasper progressed in a manner that belied the horrific event and the glaring international spotlight. News people who came looking for nothing but bad news went away with a sense of good in Jasper. Ultimately the trials began and ended, and the result was something for which Jasper should be remembered equally. For the first time in Texas history, white men were convicted and sentenced to die for the murder of a black man. King and Brewer were given the death sentence, and Berry was assessed a life term in prison with no parole eligibility for at least 40 years. The full story is something I will tell for as long as I have breath. YOUR VIEWS Students’ labor made it possible I want to thank the high school students from Decatur and Bridgeport High Schools, the teachers, parents and businesses who contributed to the recent community service project at Wise Hope Shelter. In less than 48 hours, they had demolished an outbuilding, removed the debris, landscaped the yard, cleaned the interior of the shelter and built a new perimeter fence. All of this was organized by Ricky Stutt, Skills USA teacher at DHS. These young people were amazing with their enthusiasm and willingness to do whatever was asked of them. This type of community support is what makes Wise County such a wonderful place to live. Pat Slayton Executive Director Wise Hope Shelter and Crisis Center Rand Paul’s opinion is his own In response to Ken Hughes’ opinion letter published May 27 –“Politician proved point” – Rand Paul certainly put himself in a precarious position with his constituents in his comments regarding the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the ultimate effects of which will be determined by his constituents in the November election. Mr. Hughes’ concept that one candidate’s opinion statement constitutes bigotry of a whole movement, i.e. the Tea Party movement, makes Hughes the real “bigot” as Mr. Paul’s comments represented his individual opinion – not the opinion of the Tea Party movement. If Hughes is interested, he can find out what the “clear nature” of the Tea Party Movement is by studying the tenets of the “Contract From America.” And, history, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States Of America are all very clear that religious rights were established by the founding fathers. A recently conducted USA Today/Gallup poll found that 28 percent of U.S. adults call themselves supporters of the Tea Party movement, that they tend to be conservative in their leanings and, that their age, educational background, employment status and race are quite representative of the public at large – hardly bigots or religious fundamentalists. Turn utility vehicles, Jeeps and trucks loose to race side-by-side around the park and as MORAC extreme off-road racing owner Nathan Davis says, “Carnage and rollovers are likely.” MORAC will bring its extreme racing tour to the park for the first time Saturday and Sunday. Racing in the four classes will begin at 10 a.m. both days. Twenty-six teams are expected for the event to battle for trophies and cash prizes. The Bridgeport race will also serve as the MORAC series finale with 15 teams vying for the title and the purse of $4,000. Davis toured Texas looking for a site for the series finale after races in Bryan and Conroe. “I checked out 13 courses in Texas in 10 days,” Davis said. “I went 3,000 miles looking for a course that had everything – visibility for spectators and an extreme course for the drivers. This was it.” He added that the Bridgeport course ranked in the top three in the overall evaluation and is ranked as the most extreme course of the 2010 season. The course was so extreme that Davis said crews were spending this week working to make some of the ledges more navigable. The off-road vehicles often hit speeds of 60 mph while making jumps, but Davis expects speeds to be slower this weekend on the tough course. “Most of them will be going 15 to 35 mph over rocks,” he said. “They’ll have a hard time staying in their seats even with safety harnesses.” Even with speeds on the dirt and rock surface being slower, plenty of action is expected. “They’ll be going full-throttle over boulders and trying to get up hills,” Davis said. “They’ll be racing each other and pushing each other into trees.” Tickets for event are $15 for adults, and children 12 and under are free. Camp Gridiron Bridgeport coach Danny Henson and his coaching staff put on a football camp for players between second and eighth grades this week. More than 90 players turned out for the first day Tuesday. Seth Mitchell, top, uncorks a throw during a drill. Henson, bottom left, shows Trey Cook a proper throwing technique. Messenger photos by Richard Greene FOOTBALL Wise trio fails to lock down state bids Boyd, Bridgeport and Decatur failed to lock down invitations to the state 7-on-7 tournament Saturday at Prosper. Lovejoy won the state-qualifying tournament, knocking off Sanger in the final. Both teams earned spots in the Division II state tournament July 8-9 at Texas A&M University in College Station. None of the local squads advanced out of pool play. Decatur posted a 2-1 record, beating Class 2A state champion Pilot Point and Dallas Roosevelt. The Eagles fell by eight points to Sanger. Boyd also went 2-1. The Yellowjackets knocked off Dallas A. Maceo Smith and Bridgeport before falling to Lovejoy. Bridgeport finished 1-2, falling to Boyd and Lovejoy. The Bulls beat A. Maceo Smith. Boyd and Decatur will take another stab at nailing down a state bid Saturday at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, starting at 9 a.m. Bridgeport will wait until the qualifier June 12 at Glen Rose to try for a state spot. FOOTBALL Wide receivers coach leaves Eagles By RICHARD GREENE The Decatur Eagles are looking for a new receivers coach. John Speed tendered his resignation Friday after accepting the offensive coordinator job at the new school in Leander, Rouse High School. Speed spent two seasons at Decatur after coming over from Sanger. “He did a good job for us,” said Decatur athletic director and head coach Kyle Story. “I want to help anyone that wants to move up.” Story does not have an immediate replacement for Speed. “We’ll post it and see who is available,” he said. Speed also coached Decatur’s discus throwers including District 5-3A champion Brooke Fincher. The rest of Story’s staff is expected to return for the fall as the Eagles move into the new District 7-3A with Bridgeport, Lake Worth, Mineral Wells and Fort Worth Castleberry. Decatur’s K.C. Democracy cannot be truly representative if it locks out the people it seeks to serve… 95TH BIRTHDAY Alta Tedrow Moore of Aurora celebrated her 95th birthday Saturday, May 22. Moore has lived in Aurora for more than 87 years. “You Get a Choice at Sunny Hills” PLEASE ASK ABOUT OUR SELECTIVE MENUS The Passage of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) was a watershed moment for democracy. It represented a change in the balance of power from the institutions of government to the people those institutions purported to serve. It made permanent the concept that governments could not parcel our information as they saw fit, but established that government information ultimately belonged to its citizens. Through use of FOIA, ordinary citizens and the media have uncovered critical information regarding everything from health care delivery to the environment in which we live. RANDY DECATUR Final arrangements Wedding will mark florist’s last order after 32 years By BRANDON EVANS Flowers take the place of words. The delicate, fleeting beauty of petals, pastel or ruby red, is given during the most important events in people’s lives. On Friday, designers’ deft hands will compose the final floral arrangements at Decatur Florist and Gift Shop. The last order of flowers will furnish the wedding of Laura Dunlap and Cole Tanner. Dunlap was a former employee at the flower shop. The wedding falls on Saturday, June 5, the last day Decatur Florist will be open. It will be the last of countless weddings, funerals, birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and births that the shop has provided for. “It’s sad,” said floral designer and deliverer Ninva Tuley of the store closing. “It’s been like an icon in Decatur to me.” “One of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do is tell my employees we are closing,” said owner Wanda McCurdy. “We’ve had a lot of good em- Messenger photo by Joe Duty THE LAST FLOWERS — Wanda McCurdy holds a rose that was to be used in one of the last arrangements created at Decatur Florist. It is now attached to a furniture store and a hair salon. The doors are unlocked or open between all three, allowing free flow of friends between the three businesses. “It’s been like a big family up here for years,” Mrs. McCurdy said. “We’ve all had a lot of fun.” Sometimes they had too much fun. “Ruth Woolaver was a mainstay up here for many years,” Mrs. McCurdy said. “We’d have a lot of fun. But sometimes we’d get a bit too rambunctious. Whenever that happened, Ruth pulled her Bible out and told us to settle down. “Ever since then whenever WILLIAMS 940-62 940-6 27-2177 BUICK • CHEVY • GMC • CADILLAC • HYUNDAI • PRE-OWNED Let RANDY HELP YOU with ALL Your NEW and PRE-OWNED Vehicle Needs! Continued from page 4 we started having too much fun one of us would threaten to pull a little Bible out.” Mrs. McCurdy seemed destined to work with flowers. “My very first job I had as a teenager was in a floral shop,” she said. “I started out here as a silent partner, but later I wanted to be a part of it. “I just like the beauty of flowers and how they make people feel better and feel good when they receive them.” Designer Karen Weser also appreciates the importance of flowers in people’s lives. “All the arrangements we design are important to somebody,” Weser said. “We furnish proms, weddings, graduations, anniversaries and births. And when we do funerals, it is the last thing you can do for somebody.” Tuley enjoys deliveries. “It’s fun to see their faces,” Tuley said. “Sometimes they think the flowers are from me.” Mrs. McCurdy said the business has been a family affair. “Valentine’s Day has always been one of the busiest times of the year for us,” she said. “My husband was our rose stripper. That is a huge job.” The floral industry has seen some changes since she started. “When homecoming time would come around, we’d have to make all the corsages out of fresh flowers,” Mrs. McCurdy said. “It was an all-night affair. Then the silk corsages came out. People didn’t like them at first.” Carolyn Shaw has worked at the floral shop for 15 years. She also manages the furniture store next door. For years she’s sat on a stool near the inside doorway between the two businesses. “It’s bittersweet,” Shaw said of the closing. “She didn’t want to sell the business to someone else. She wanted the business to close with class.” Shaw, Weser, Tuley and Becky Ragan are the current employees at the floral shop. “Becky is the hardestworking girl I’ve ever seen,” Mrs. McCurdy said. And two weeks ago, at the age of 80, Margaret Burkmier retired as a designer from Decatur Florist. “It was all I could do to keep up with her,” Mrs. McCurdy said. “This is the greatest place in the world,” she said. “We’ve had the greatest cus- WCH 20 CAMP Tuesday, June 22 At First Baptist Church of Decatur 1200 W. Wise County Messenger Classifieds • www.wcmessenger.com/class The long-term health benefits of an active lifestyle are irrefutable. One of the greatest gifts parents can give their children is the healthy habit of daily exercise. Luckily, toddlers don’t need a gym, a personal trainer, or any special equipment to stay fit. Toddlers should have about a half an hour daily of structured physical activity. Essentially, this means anything that involves the gross motor skills such as walking, jumping, skipping, and running. Toddlers love to dance and play, and these activities will provide effortless exercise. Toddlers should augment structured play with lots of free play time running around. A rule of thumb is to break up sedentary activities with active ones after about an hour. 203 W. As a result, an egg is prevented from traveling to the uterus from the ovary, and sperm is blocked from reaching the Fallopian tube to fertilize an egg. Not only is the simple procedure immediately effective, many women report that tubal ligation lowered their risk of certain sexual problems (such as lack of interest in sex), thereby increasing their happiness with their sex lives. It may be that women and their partners enjoy sex more after tubal ligation because they are free of the anxiety over potential unplanned pregnancy. Tubal ligation is permanent and irreversible. ALWAYS TOP DOLLAR FOR YOUR TRADE-IN If you have questions or concerns about your gynecological health, or would like additional information about tubal ligation and other birth control options, don’t hesitate and call WISE OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY P.A. at 940-626-8008 to schedule an appointment. Extension Agent With all of the recent emphasis on going green, it has become hard to read a weekly magazine or watch a television program without encountering some expert blasting factory farming of livestock and advocating, if not demanding, a return to the simpler, cleaner, more ethical system of producing agricultural commodities. A recent research paper from the University of Georgia (published in the Journal of Animal Science) compared a typical dairy farm from 1944, when management was largely pasture-based, to a typical modern dairy farm in 2007. In addition, for the same amount of milk, the 2007 dairy produced only 24 percent as much manure, 43 percent as much methane and 56 percent as much nitrous oxide and had a carbon footprint only 37 percent as large. A comparison of grass-fed beef production compared Clayton’s Corner to current feeding systems yielded similar results. To fulfill the increasing requirements of the U.S. population for dairy and beef products, it is essential to adopt management practices and technologies that improve production efficiency, allowing milk and beef production to be increased while reducing the impact on the environment. Q The Humane Society of the United States, a McDonald’s stockholder, has proposed purchasing 5 percent of the company’s eggs from cage-free sources. McDonald’s rejected the proposal on the grounds that there is not enough scientific evidence to do so and that cage-free systems may increase risk of infectious disease. Then, my wife fed it with an organic citrus food, and it died very quickly. Could the plant food have killed it? That’s not a lot to go on. It would seem unlikely that a product intended to nourish a plant would end up killing that same plant. That would assume that it was applied in the recommended dosage. Other things (cold damage, if this happened over the winter; insufficient light; perhaps insects, etc.) are more likely to have been the cause, but I’d have to have more clues to figure it out. Dear Neil: I have two plum trees near one another. Both bloom, but only one sets fruit. Any idea why that might happen? Are they blooming at the same time? One may be getting pollen from other trees nearby. If the other (nonfruiting) tree blooms earlier or later, there may not be sufficient pollen. Methley is the best pollinator, both of other types and of itself. Maybe your “good” tree is of that variety. Dear Neil: I need to put grass on a steep slope. What grass type will both hold the soil and stand up to drought for me? Common bermudagrass would be the top choice. You may have to sod it across the slope to stop erosion until it takes root. Dear Neil: I have an Italian stone pine that is strug- First Week FREE! gling because someone planted it in shallow, rocky soil. Can I dig out around it and add better soil? You could do that if it were vigorous enough to be salvaged, but it would eventually require a front-end loader to remove enough soil. Their roots can grow to be quite extensive. Are you sure it’s worth all that effort? There are so many other fine trees. You ought to consider one of them as a replacement. eggs. As the branch dries and dies, it snaps off. The larvae develop in the dead twig on the ground. Rake up the twigs and destroy them. No spray will help, because the adults are transitory, and the larvae are active long after a spray would be effective. Gardener’s Mailbag Dear Neil: I was surprised at your answer that involved mulching Texas mountain laurels to keep their seedlings from growing. My sister did exactly that, and they popped up all over. I am still comfortable with my answer, but I might need to explain it a bit more. Not only will mulch make it more difficult for weeds, including tree seedlings, to sprout, but it also makes it a lot easier to remove them. All you have to do is drag a hoe or rake through the mulch. Your goal would be to disturb their root systems, ever so gently. That would expose the plants’ roots to the air, and they would not survive. Dear Neil: I have a river birch that sheds twigs continuously. It looks like they’ve been cut off the tree. What does that, and how can I stop it? That’s damage done by twig girdlers. The adult female beetle cuts around the branch, then deposits her Dear Neil: I’ve attached a photo of a weed that someone told me is dichondra. Sprays haven’t killed it. It’s growing in St. Augustine. What should I use? From your photo, it does look similar to dichondra, but it doesn’t appear to be an exact match. Not to worry, because a broadleafed weedkiller (containing 2,4-D) will kill it. Use a pump sprayer, and set its spray pattern to be a fine-medium mist. Hose-end sprayers put out droplets that are too large. They bead up and roll off glossy leaves like this. In fact, include one drop of liquid dishwashing detergent per gallon of spray to help hold it on the leaf surface. Dear Neil: What is your feeling about rubber mulch? I don’t see people using it. If all you want is a mulch that will cover the ground, rubber mulch would be fine. It will retard weed growth, lessen water losses to evaporation and moderate the rates of soil temperature changes. But, it doesn’t decay, so it won’t have the beneficial effect on the soil. And, to some people’s eyes, it doesn’t look D.A.C. Decatur Academy for Children, Inc. However, it’s a matter of personal taste. Dear Neil: I have round, green balls all over the leaves and twigs of my pecan trees. Will they keep the tree from producing pecans this year? Those are pecan phylloxera galls. They’re a little disfiguring, but they’re essentially harmless. Your only means of reducing their numbers in the long term is to apply dormant oil (horticultural oil) during the late winter. Dear Neil: We have a gorgeous hillside of the trailing vinca. Is there any way to protect it against the summer heat? It’s usually not the heat, but leafrollers that do damage to vinca groundcover in Texas. Apply a systemic insecticide monthly beginning now, and see if it makes a measurable difference. It should be noticeable. 115 S.Trinity, Decatur 940- 627-5987 Visa MasterCard American Express Discover Public Fax 940-627-1004 7:30-5:30 Mon.-Fri. She knew instantly that she had done more damage to herself than just the average fall; she had actually fractured her right hip. Shirley crawled back into the house and waited there for 4 hours until her family returned home. After undergoing surgery and some physical therapy at the hospital, Shirley said, “I knew that I had to have additional therapy before I could go home.” Shirley had heard about Senior Care Health & Rehabilitation Center, a new facility, that had just opened and set out to investigate from her hospital bed. After completing her homework regarding her next step to recovery, she was ready to be admitted to Senior Care. “I knew that the emphasis would be placed on care,” explains Shirley; to her relief she was correct. After spending 20 days at Senior Care, Shirley was ready to return home and back to her job. If you think you have seen her before, you probably have; Shirley is the smiling face that greets you here at our Decatur Wal-Mart. Shirley explains, “ I would highly recommend Senior Care to people; the staff are nice, very supportive, eager to please, and knowledgeable” Senior Care HEALTH & REHABILITATION CENTER BRIDGEPORT / DECATUR June Schedule: June 7 - 11 Super Silly Science Week June 14 - 18 Groovy Gardening Week June 21 - 25 Back to Nature Week June 28 - July 2 Crazy Cooking Week SPACE IS LIMITED...
