TEMPLE BETH EL OF BOCA RATON JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016 | TEVET/SHEVAT/ADAR 5776 AMERICA DIVIDED IS RELIGION THE ANSWER? RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE ISN’T ENOUGH page 3 CONVERSATIONS ON THE CUTTING EDGE WITH DR. ROBERT PUTNAM page 9 CELEBRATE SHABBAT page 11 24-hour personal response and care 888-616-0707 Religious Tolerance Isn’t Enough BY RABBI DAN LEVIN [email protected] It’s easy to get cynical about religion. When we see how religious differences are literally tearing nations apart, and how religious intolerance has resulted in the murder of thousands and the displacement of millions, it’s hard not to look and wonder if religion itself is the cause of our world’s problems. But something amazing has happened in America. Unlike societies where people fight to establish the “one true religion,” we have found strength in our religious diversity. Our society grows stronger because of the vast array of religious paths Americans may choose to pursue, because the moral fabric that is woven into religious life so deeply influences how we treat each other. It is our religious fabric that teaches us to reach out to one another in crisis. It is our religious fabric that organizes us into communities of meaning. It is our religious fabric that compels us to work to build a society Protestant Christian denominations. Over time, as the Founding Fathers decoupled religion from state, America grew to embrace first religious tolerance, then begrudging acceptance. In his monumental study of religious attitudes and practice, American Grace, Putnam notes that Americans today, both religious and non-religious, overwhelmingly believe that “religious diversity has been good for America.” We live in an extraordinary time and place. We still barely comprehend the enormity of what has happened to the Jewish people in the last 100 years. In the face of religious intolerance, pogroms and persecutions, we began a mass migration from Europe to the shores of North America. Millions of our people were consumed by the fires of the holocaust. From the pulverized rubble of Jewish life in Europe, we began to build the State of Israel, to bring in the exiles of Persia, Iraq, Yemen, North Africa, Perhaps our celebration of interfaith partnership and dialogue will help us to grow a little less cynical as we all seek to better understand each other, ourselves, our lives, and our world. rooted in justice and tempered by compassion. It was not always so. Robert Putnam, the Malkin Professor of Public Policy at Harvard University, teaches that although the first to colonize America came for religious liberty, they were not always eager to extend that liberty beyond a few Europe, Asia, and America. And we endeavored to push beyond the boundaries of the Ghetto to integrate ourselves into the wider societies in which we found ourselves. But what’s even more extraordinary is how our people’s relationship with the world has changed. Fifty years ago, when the Catholic Church adopted Nostra Aetate, the Second Vatican Council’s revolutionary statement on how the Church would relate to the non-Catholic peoples of the world, Jews and Catholics began a new era of comity and understanding no one could ever have imagined given the nearly two thousand years of animosity and hatred that existed between Catholics and Jews. This year Temple Beth El and St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church are celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of our shared Catholic-Jewish dialogue and partnership. Because of the vision of Rabbi Merle Singer, Msgr. John McMahon, Bill Gralnick of the American Jewish Committee and the Catholic hierarchy in South Florida, our two congregations have built amazing bridges of understanding and friendship. We continued on page 8 May/June 2015 • THE CHRONICLE 3 A MESSAGE FROM BARRY PODOLSKY Temple Beth El Ranked #1 Every two years, congregations belonging to the URJ (Union for Reform Judaism) gather to discuss important issues relevant to Jewish life, study and worship. This year the convention was held in Orlando and over 5,000 attended. Our delegation of 47 volunteers, staff & clergy was the largest group in North America! From Wednesday through Sunday we attended workshops, study groups and even fit all 5,000 into one room to celebrate Shabbat (with a choir comprised of 120 cantors from around the world). The common theme was “congregant engagement through smaller groups.” For years synagogues held programs and counted how many attended. The bigger the group, the greater the success. But today we were encouraged to consider an additional strategy— programs targeted to specific Temple Beth El President Barry Podolsky [email protected] 954-326-2180 groups within the Temple. Getting to know other congregants is much easier in a room of 20 people than a room of 200 people and building community only comes from getting to know one another. This doesn’t mean we will end programs with large attendance. Rather, we will be adding many new events oriented to smaller more focused groups. We started this year with our Adult Experiences programming for those in their 40’s & 50’s. Every few weeks this group has been receiving emails and signing up for programs varying from salsa dancing to gourmet dining – always with some Jewish component. In the coming months and next year, we will be expanding the small group programming to other focused groups. Our goal is greater congregant engagement. To succeed, we will need greater volunteer involvement to organize and implement the increased programming, but when people are having fun and/or feeling enriched, we believe they will be willing to accept greater involvement. Smaller, focused groups will mean everyone will not be invited to everything and most programs will fill up fast. This is a big change for us so please understand if we are sold out. Our goal is small group engagement. You will be hearing a lot more about this new initiative in the coming months. I will also be writing about other topics from the convention, especially the concept of Audacious Hospitality. As always, if you would like to share some thoughts or discuss Temple activities, don’t hesitate to call or email. January/February 2016 • THE CHRONICLE 7 Religion in Israel BY LOT E M E I LO N Lotem is spending the year at Temple Beth El as our Shlicha- Israel Emissary – from the Jewish Agency for Israel. Feel free to contact her with any questions about Israel or to invite her for Shabbat dinner! [email protected] Israel is the Jewish state. Religion fits into our lives in Israel almost naturally without much effort. I don’t think I had to “choose” to be Jewish, it is there all the time and everywhere. My friends are mostly Jewish, my education is Jewish and my vacation time from school and work was on the Jewish holidays. The groceries we bought were always kosher, because every public supermarket is basically a kosher supermarket. Most importantly – our weekend, our resting day is Shabbat (Saturday.) Having a resting day is a social right. It starts Friday afternoon when stores start closing. On Friday, people everywhere will greet you with a “Shabbat Shalom.” Everybody takes one step back for the weekend and rests, and you can really feel it in the air. My family might not have a regular Kiddush on Shabbat, but there is always a family dinner. Shabbat is represented in my mind as family time. A time to go visit my grandparents, to sit and eat all together as a family, to see my friends and relax from the long week. Shabbat became most meaningful to me during my army service. Coming back home for the Shabbat was about having a break; family, home cooked meals and rest for the short time of Shabbat before going back to the base. Any Israeli you’ll ask will have a different answer for the question: “what is religion in Israel?” and it might be one of the biggest arguments among Israeli society. But to all of them, the Jewish state is home. Temple Beth El’s Jewish Federation mission to Israel trip 8 THE CHRONICLE | tbeboca.org Religious Tolerance Isn’t Enough R A B B I DA N L E V I N continued from page 3 stand on the shoulders of these extraordinary leaders who helped Msgr. McGraw and myself to build on the foundation they have laid for us. What have we gained from thirty years of workshops in which Jewish and Catholic teachers collaborate on lesson plans that reflect on a mutual theme from our different faiths? What have we learned from thirty years of lessons shared by the leading Catholic minds of our time from Temple Beth El’s bima? We have learned that there is so much more that unites us than divides us. We have learned that delving into our respective faith traditions makes us all more understanding and wise. We have learned that, as Robert Putnam teaches, “America solved the puzzle of religious pluralism … by creating a web of interlocking personal relationships among people of … different faiths.” In celebration of this milestone anniversary, we are thrilled to welcome Robert Putnam to share with us in our Spirituality Series on Tuesday evening January 12 at 7:00 pm at Temple Beth El Schaefer Family Campus. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to hear from one of the most engaging and captivating speakers and scholars of religious life in America. And please mark your calendars for the last weekend in January for our 30th Interfaith weekend with St. Joan of Arc. Perhaps our celebration of interfaith partnership and dialogue will help us to grow a little less cynical as we all seek to better understand each other, ourselves, our lives, and our world. In conversation with Rabbi Dan Levin and Msgr. Michael McGraw, we will seek to understand how to maintain lives of connection in a world that pushes us to disconnect, how to embrace religious and economic diversity in our society rather than let it tear us apart. Interfaith Weekend BETH EL and ST. JOAN READ PUTNAM Would you like to become more familiar with Putnam’s work before his visit? Chapters of several of his book have been uploaded to our website. From Bowling Alone, his book that reflects on the disconnected nature of 21st century American society to American Grace, which examines the role religion has in American society; Putnam has an uncanny ability to reflect on society in a way that makes us take a hard look at ourselves. His most recent book, Our Kids, examines the class gap in society and the huge impact that has on our children. M A R C Y S C H U LTZ Marcy Schultz Associate Director of Jewish Living and Learning [email protected] In a world where people “feed their souls” at the gym, a local Starbucks or even their country club, many people ask themselves: "Why should we invest time and energy into Judaism and Jewish experiences? Is religion important to me and my family?" Judaism gives us a roadmap of how to live, including values to incorporate into every day. Giving charity to those less fortunate— tzedakah, leaving the world a better place than you found it—tikkun olam and treating others with kindness—gemilut chasadim are all important acts—mitzvot that have their foundation in Judaism. Without even realizing it, children learn Jewish values in social outings with their friends in our youth groups which span kindergarten through 12th grade. In fun settings like laser tag or teen travel, our students learn to build a holy community—Kehillah Kedosha. This community accepts others for their similarities and differences, treats each other with respect and creates an extraordinarily strong social network which will be with them their whole lives. Judaism is practiced not only at the synagogue but also in the home. When families create an environment to encourage the importance of being Jewish, of living the Mitzvot and finding the beauty and meaning that Judaism holds, together we raise a generation who will continue the Jewish values that we hold so dear. MITZVAH PROJECTS JUSTIN HOCK AND SAM FORSTOT On Saturday, November 14 Sam Forstot and Justin Hock teamed up to do some good. They organized a basketball free-throw contest during the Boca Hoops Finals, to benefit two important organizations they hold near and dear. “Cancer has touched both of our hearts with a number of loving family members affected. Since basketball is part of who we are and is such a big part of our lives, we wanted to incorporate this into our Mitzvah Project.” The High 5 Division of Boca Hoops is an unbelievable organization that allows children and young adults with disabilities, either mental or physical, to participate in the game of basketball. In addition to basketball skills, they also learn about sportsmanship and teamwork. Kids, coaches and even some parents came out to “Shoot to Make a Difference” and made donations in order to participate. The contest raised $800.00 and received an additional donation from Boca Hoops as well! It was truly a day of good deeds and giving! 16 THE CHRONICLE | tbeboca.org BROOKE SEFTON Brooke has chosen to volunteer at Otzar, a Sunday school program that offers a Jewish educational experience to students with special needs. Having recently spent a long weekend with 5000 Reform Jews, I think I have the answer. Religion is for community. Of course, most religious people pray and perhaps attend religious services, but after spending time in Orlando at the URJ Biennial I can say with confidence that we need community. Our Jewish community is incredibly powerful, both locally and around the world. What we all learned at the Biennial is that, as a community, our URJ community has a voice. Both the URJ and the WRJ spent quite a bit of time discussing and passing resolutions regarding a variety of very important and quite daring topics. The URJ passed the most comprehensive inclusion and non-discrimination resolution with regards to transgender people. The WRJ passed resolutions to be a force in both the parental leave rights movement and the anti-texting while driving movement. All of these resolutions involve the community. Praying with 5000 Reform Jews for Shabbat was a communal experience unlike any other I have experienced. Temple Beth El had the largest delegation of ANY temple there. What a beautiful community we have! In late November and early December, Sisterhood held two amazing programs. Bingotini and our Woman of Valor luncheon were extremely well attended with well over 150 people attending each. People were there to support our community. We need community now more than ever. Join us at Sisterhood events and be a part of our community! When we started there was trepidation and anxiety. We both have numerous other responsibilities in work, family and other personal interests and endeavors. The questions in our minds were daunting. Would the other men of Temple Beth El follow our leadership? Could we command respect while still respecting the opinions of others? Could we fulfill our obligations to the Temple without messing up? Would there be enough spare cash in our budget to pay for the pizza we order at every board meeting? Maybe that’s what religion is for. To relieve the anxiety of the unknown. To provide the reason for faith in yourself and that all things will work out if you are righteous and holy. So Hallelujah! We must have found some old time religion because Brotherhood, and the two of us, are happy to report we’re managing just fine. This year we have had the re-introduction of Brotherhood Networking and our first Family Movie Night under the stars at the Beck Family Campus. Both events were overwhelming successes and have left Temple Beth El asking for more. We will be happy to oblige. Our Annual Golf Event honored Bob Marton this year and we set new records in attendance, and money raised which will go to support the Temple Beth El community and in part the Bet Elazraki Children’s Home in Israel. Upcoming in the new year we are happy to be co-sponsoring with Sisterhood the Temple Beth El premier of Above and Beyond. This event will be Sunday, January 17 at the Schaefer Campus. There will be a discussion with the film’s director Nancy Spielberg during a brunch, followed by the movie screening later in the evening. February features Super Bowl Shizzel on February 7, 2016 at Beck Family Campus. Starting just after noontime you can spend some time playing with the pigskin and participating in fun football contests with your young children. Lunch will be served. You can find more information about upcoming Brotherhood activities in our Brotherhood brochures. They are located in the lobbies of Schaefer and Beck Family Campuses.
