of Neo-soul, continues to bridge the gap
between generations of music lovers.
In the 60’s he was an award-winning
jazz vibraphonist, and transformed
into a popular R&B band leader in the
70’s/80’s. Today, the dynamic music man
is an iconic figure still in great demand
and whose music has been sampled by
industry heavyweights including Mary
J. Blige, Erykah Badu, 50 Cent, A Tribe
Called Quest, Tupac and Ice Cube. Many
of Ayers’ songs including: ‘Everybody

Spotlight on Jazz Legends
Jason Rebello
Liane Carroll
London born and Hastings raised,
award winning singer-pianist Liane
Carroll is one of the UK’s greatest
musical treasures. A soulful, emotive
singer, she is capable of reducing
listeners to tears with her heartbreaking ability to inhabit a lyric or of
making an audience jump for joy with
her breath-taking vocal virtuosity.
What really makes Carroll stand out
however is the way that she delivers
every song as though she wrote it.
A classically trained pianist since
she was three, she possesses a true
musicality that lifts her interpretations
into the realms of art in their own
right and to hear her sing event the
best-known standard or the most
hackneyed pop song is to hear that
song afresh.
Liane will perform a solo concert in
Bennigans Bar and Jazz Club on
Friday 29th April at 4pm.
6
British pianist Jason Rebello is regarded
as one of the most inventive pianists
to emerge from the UK since he burst
onto the scene in the early 90’s with a
run of albums for the BMG label. Jason
has worked mainly with electronic
keyboards in his own groups (as well as
with Sting and Jeff Beck); but now he has
decided it’s time to say something on the
instrument he loves. In early 2016 Jason
will release and tour his debut solo
piano album, featuring mostly originals
inspired by the people and places that
have been important in his career.
Jason will perform material from his new
solo album in Bennigans Bar and Jazz
Club on Sunday 1st May at 3pm.
Gay McIntyre
Jean Toussaint
Often hailed as Derry’s own Father
of Jazz, Gay McIntyre has been
entertaining music lovers in the North
West for over 60 years.
Born in the Caribbean, Grammywinning jazz saxophone giant, Jean
Toussaint started his musical career
in a calypso band before studying jazz
at the prestigious Berklee College
of Music in Boston. He began his
international career as a member of
Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in 1982.
After four and a half years in the band
alongside Terence Blanchard, Donald
Harrison, Lonnie Plaxico and Mulgrew
Miller, he settled in London, quickly
becoming a key figure in British
jazz. Toussaint has maintained a
considerable presence as bandleader
in Europe having recorded 10 albums
as a leader. As a sideman, Toussaint
has worked with McCoy Tyner, Max
Roach, Cedar Walton, Gil Evans and
Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts. He will join Derry’s
own John Leighton Trio for the
performance on Sunday 1st May at
8pm in Bennigans Bar.
Known across Ireland, the UK and
Europe as one of the finest exponents
of jazz music ever, Gay has received
countless plaudits and rave reviews, and
featured in a staggering 1200 episodes
of ‘Tea Time with Tommy’ for UTV,
followed by ‘The White Line’, which was
broadcast worldwide. You can see Gay
in action numerous times throughout
the festival, popping up to support his
son Paul McIntyre, and at his own gig in
Bennigans on Saturday 30th April.
