Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam
My Dear Parishioners,
Seldom does the United States Conference of Catholic Bishop’s put
out statements that address specific movies, television series or
books, so, when it does, I think it is important to be notified about it.
Unfortunately, I didn’t receive the following announcement sooner; otherwise I
would have included it in the bulletin a week or two ago. However, since it is
still applicable, I include the following today. We can also use it as a reminder,
particularly in this Season of Lent, to be careful about what we are subjecting
ourselves to (and our children!) when reading, listening to or viewing that
which is produced in our culture by the social media.
As you may be aware, a film called Fifty Shades of Grey is being released in
theaters on February 13th, 2015. The books and film, marketed as a romantic
story, are a graphic portrayal of a young woman agreeing to be abused and degraded in a sexual relationship.
Leaders in the Religious Alliance Against Pornography (RAAP) have stated,
“The contrast between the message of Fifty Shades of Grey and God’s design
for self-giving and selfsacrificing love, marriage and sexual intimacy could not
be greater.” As you know, we as bishops have spoken with a united voice
against domestic violence, and in particular, violence against women (see When
I Call for Help, 1992, rev. 2002). We have also emphasized the need to overcome the exploitation of sex and violence in communications (see Renewing the
Mind of the Media, 1998).
As the Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth continues its work
with other committees on the development of a statement on pornography, I
wanted to call your attention to the release of this film and to RAAP’s statement
(enclosed), in addition to our own resources. This is an opportunity for us to
remind the faithful of the beauty of the Church’s teaching on the gift of sexual
intimacy in marriage, the great dignity of women, and the moral reprehensibility
of all domestic violence and sexual exploitation.
A list of resources to help men and women who are struggling with pornography
is available at http://www.foryourmarriage.org/help-for-men-and-womenstruggling-withpornography-use-or-addiction/. I also take this opportunity to
alert you to an initiative by Morality in Media (soon to be called the National
Center on Sexual Exploitation) in reference to the film: http://
endsexualexploitation.org/fiftyshadesgrey/.
In Jesus, through Mary,
Father Jeremy Leatherby
Deacon Lawrence
The shortest verse in the
bible is “Jesus wept.”
Jesus wept over the loss
of His friend Lazarus
and how that loss affected Lazarus’ sisters, Martha and Mary. Jesus wept over Jerusalem because the people would not
accept the love He offered them.
When Jesus weeps it is perhaps
then that we are closest to His human nature. We can relate to sorrow
and pain. We weep over being separated from a loved one, either because they have been taken from us
or because by their actions they
have abandoned us.
The Lenten season begins with Ash
Wednesday. We prepare ourselves
to move closer to our Lord. We do
this by fasting and prayer and ridding ourselves of the distractions
that separate us from God. We do
not do these things for their own
sake or even for our own selfimprovement. We do these things
out of love for the Lord. These actions we take up during Lent are all
oriented toward allowing us to enter
into a deeper relationship with Jesus.
Let us remember the image of
Christ weeping as we enter into this
time of atonement. Jesus weeps for
us. He weeps because more often
then not we have turned away from
Him or left Him. He weeps because
the great love He pours out for us is
not returned. He weeps over our
sins.
Let us use this time to make Jesus
the center of our lives, if not for His
sake, then for our own.

What is the RCIA Rite of Election?
This Rite marks a key moment. For the catechumens, this Rite signifies that
they have been called by Christ and attests to the reality that only those
mystically claimed by Christ will enter Heaven. St. John writes, “If anyone’s
name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of
fire” (Rev 20:15). Throughout this RCIA process, catechumens should have
become increasingly involved with the parish community. The community,
with godparents representing the parish, will wholeheartedly acclaim the
participants’ readiness. It is appropriate for the bishop to recognize them
because he is the sign of unity of the particular Church, and it is the parish
community’s responsibility to bring those in RCIA into the fullness of the life
of the Church. The godparents give public testimony about the catechumens. The godparents’ role is very significant; they represent the community and are asked during this Rite to make serious statements about the catechumens. The decision of an RCIA participant to go through this Rite
means that the judgment and decision-making (of both the catechumen and
parish) about whether to enter the Catholic Church has ended. From this
point forward, they are no longer catechumens but are called the “elect.”
They have been chosen to enter into the final period of preparation for initiation, and called by the bishop, their shepherd, to the holy mysteries to be
celebrated that Easter.

CHALLENGE" WITH GREG & JULIE ALEXANDER
From EWTN’s “Marriage Works in Christ” and authors of the best
selling book “MARRIAGE 911”
Regardless of the many attacks being waged on marriage today, the Alexander’s believe that our goal
should be to support all couples in developing thriving and joy-filled relationships. It is only through a
change of heart brought about by personal conversion that our society will begin to change and be
reshaped. Bringing the Good News to as many couples as possible is the focus of this mission.
