The transition from Reusable to Single Patient Use...
Over the last 25 years the Filshie Clip has been applied using the Classic
Reusable Filshie Clip Applicator. In 2004 Femcare-Nikomed introduced “Sterishot”,
a Single Patient Use Applicator for the application of the Filshie Clip. The Sterishot
Single Patient Use Applicator was developed as a result of the growing demand
for Single Patient Use devices used in invasive surgical procedures.
Femcare-Nikomed is a global medical device company, supplying products to the

The Company was initially formed in Nottingham in 1982 as Femcare Ltd, and in 2001
acquired Nikomed Ltd, a UK based medical distribution business supplying products
sourced from around the world to the NHS and private hospitals in the UK.
Whilst the Company has a wide product portfolio its major brand is the Filshie Clip
System. This is an implantable female sterilisation device which has a strong clinical
pedigree (99.76% success rate) and is recognised by leading surgeons around the world
as the ‘number one’ choice for female surgical contraception.
The Filshie Clip System acquired further global recognition with its approval for sale by the
FDA in the United States in 1996, opening up yet another very large market opportunity
for the brand. Effective, simple and reliable, the Filshie Clip System consistently
outperforms alternative methods of surgical contraception, with 10 million clips having
been successfully applied globally since its launch in 1982.
More recently in 2007, to improve the Group’s overall effectiveness a consolidation of the
UK facilities resulted in the relocation of the Group to its current head quarters based in
Romsey, Hampshire, UK.

simple, yet effective means of female
surgical contraception, with over 25
years of clinical use and a proven
success rate of 99.76%. In the region
of 10 million Filshie Clips have been
successfully applied worldwide and the
Filshie Clip product is considered by
most surgeons as the “Gold Standard”
for female surgical contraception.

THE ‘ELITE’ KIT... A procedural kit comprising:

• One Disposable Shielded 8mm Trocar and Cannula
The single use product guarantees sterility every time, is fully calibrated and adds
the convenience of an off the shelf device. This has led to the overwhelming support
of theatre staff and more notably Risk Managers within the theatre environment.
The number of Classic Reusable Filshie Clip Applicators used in UK hospitals is
diminishing rapidly as demand for the single patient use system supersedes the
reusable method. As a result of this trend, in 2008 the Classic Filshie Applicator was
withdrawn from sale in the UK.
In pursuit of clinical excellence, Femcare-Nikomed’s in-house R&D team has worked
extensively to improved the performance of the Sterishot device incorporating
customer feedback to enhance its functionality in the development of the “next
generation” Sterishot II Single Patient Use Filshie Clip Applicator.
To be launched in April 2009, this new device incorporates the following
enhancements:• An ergonomically designed handle to complement all hand sizes.
• Reduced Clip closure force.
• Greater control during Clip deployment.
• A fully calibrated and sterile applicator for single patient use.
Key functionality consistent with the Filshie brand for the last 25 years has also
been retained:• Handling similar to the original “Classic” brand.
• “No touch” Filshie Clip loading technique.
