It was lovely to head along to Waverley Care last week to take part in their branding consultation for their MSM sexual health service that will be run in partnership with LGBT Health & Wellbeing. Although it was sad to walk down Union Street the night before and see the empty GMH offices, having volunteered there myself sometime back around the Crusades. cover: Mark Vice Art SCOTSGAY ISSN: 1357-0595 Unless otherwise stated © Pageprint Press Ltd, May 2016. Call Lothian Cat Rescue on Bonnyrigg on (01875) 821025. www.lothiancatrescue.org News Y oo hoo! Well, the rather sporadic mixture of sunshine and hailstones can only mean it’s June - taps aff all round! So what’s new, folks? The new testing nights on Tue began in Apr and are linked in with ROAM and NHS Scotland. They are looking to expand and solidify their offering to Gay, Bi and Men Who Have Sex With Men in the Lothians but for now some volunteers and interested individuals got together to give their views on possible branding. It was lovely to just sit and talk about what our needs are, how we want to see ourselves represented and bringing some of our experiences of working within the community into the process. Things will be launching in the run-up to Pride Edinburgh (2nd Jul) where there will be a major presence. Details are under wraps for now, though. TIE Campaign, the Time for Inclusive Education lobbyists won a major coup this month when it was announced that they will be partnering with Pride Glasgow (which will take place 20th-21st Aug) and their vision of LGBT-inclusive education for schools and tackling homophobia, biphobia and transphobia will become the official theme for the event. This ticks a major box for the community as well, giving a political theme back to the March and Festival that has been effectively absent since the old anti-Section 28 presence from (a few) years ago. Yes, it’s nearly time for my annual “this is why you need Pride” lecture. Brace yerselves. Free Pride in Glasgow will once again be organised for the same weekend. They’ve put all the ugliness of last year’s anti-drag policy behind them and are welcoming all performers provided they “comply with (their) safer spaces policy”. I’ve asked for a copy of it so we all know where we stand (if it’s on the stage or not). One location we’d love to have for a Highlands Pride if anyone fancies it is Kinlochewe near Achnasheen in Wester Ross. What’s up there, I hear you cry? That’s where Tom and Liz Forrest run Cromasaig, their “Family & Heterosexual Friendly” Bed & Breakfast. Their charming retro website features some stunning views - and I’m not talking about the pictures of the surrounding scenery! They proudly display a sign on their website that marriage is between a man and a woman, alongside images promoting freedom of speech and choice. Yet when contacted they seemed unwilling to confirm whether they would accept a booking from a gay couple, they gave dictionary definitions of both heterosexual and friendly (they may be one but they certainly are not the latter). Complaints have been registered with Police Scotland and Visit Scotland’s complaints department are also investigating. Tom and Liz Forrest did not want to discuss the matter any further with me. Shame. Maybe they’ve not heard that ILGA just declared Scotland the best country for LGBT rights in Europe for the 2nd year running. Of course there’s still along way to go (Kinlochewe, apparently) but it’s generally heartening. Visit Scotland have had negative reports from them since 2004 and refuse to list or endorse them. In fact they have reported them to the Equality & Human Rights Commission (EHRC), who have the power to Peeking over the wall and into Cumbria, since our readership extends there, CELEBRATE: LGBT History in Cumbria project have commissioned an exhibit by photographer Colin Tennant. Although the final exhibition will be in Sep, there will be a preview from 13th-26th Jun of “Here, Today” which comprises eight images of LGBT people in Cumbria who are over 60 and reflects on their lives. Finally, the Church of Scotland has decided by a 339-215 vote to recognise Ministers and Deacons in same-sex marriages. But Kirk ministers will not be able to register same-sex civil partnerships or solemnise same-sex marriages themselves. The Very Rev John Chalmers, Principal Clerk to the General Assembly, said that a report on Christian understanding of marriage would be presented to the General Assembly next year but that it was not inevitable that commissioners would endorse same-sex marriage ceremonies being held in churches because each General Assembly is unique and has a mind of its own. As always, if you’ve anything on and want us to spread the word (people read this, right?) then drop us a line at [email protected] or remain forever in obscurity! 3 HELPLINES ABUSED MEN IN SCOTLAND Tel: Freefone 0808 8000024 Mon-Fri 9am-4pm. Dundee Aidan Sutherland G [email protected] ood morning or good evening Aberdeen (depending on when you’re reading this). Are you enjoying the summer (all 5 days we’ve had so far). If not then you should really get out more, it’s been pretty warm! Now to talk about the lovely city of Aberdeen. Peachez’ Kiki has taken off tremendously revitalising Thu nights with fortnightly themed competitions. Her Eurovision themed night was sensational providing some of the best and most creative drag I’ve seen in Aberdeen (see pictures). This is every Thu from 9pm in Cheerz Bar so do not miss out! As always if you can’t make it out on a Thu there’s plenty of other entertainment: Mama Romy hosts the weekly quiz on a Tue, Disco Jim hosts your karaoke Wed, Bobbie Dazzles you on Fri evenings and Mama Romy helps you party the night away every Sat, and for those who have enough stamina for a Sun sesh you have the fabulous Mr Kevin Thorburn/Cherry Bakewell (whom btw you can catch in Sinatras on Sat nights). Don’t forget that tickets are still available Cheerz’s summer spectacular Greased Up. I personally cannot wait to see this talented bunch of individuals gender bend this classic with hilarious (and hopefully filthy) jokes and big belty musical numbers. The article this month will be a short one due to some minor illness on my part but before I wrap things up I wanted to address something: slut shaming. So, I recently heard about someone who’s old enough to know better (mid 30’s) slut shaming someone who’s young enough to have such sexualised behaviour be standard practise (18). I’m actually sickened. I don’t even like said young guy but I totally feel for him here. obar dheadhainn I’ve been slut shamed before and I still get slut shamed nowadays. The difference between 18 year old me and 26 year old me is that 26 year old me really doesn’t give a flying monkeys what anyone else says. Who doesn’t enjoy sex? I mean really?! Get off your high horse and get on a stiff one for God’s sake! Maybe then you’ll not be such a miserable bitch! If you slut shame people then in my eyes you see yourself as ugly, pathetic, sexless and boring and you’re using hateful comments to try and hide your jealousy and make yourself feel better. Well I’ve got news for you... Hate won’t cover that face. Hate won’t hide your insecurities and hate will certainly not stop people like that young lad, or myself from having a good time. It will however lead you further down your miserable unchosen road of celibacy. Now do everyone a favour... Stick a dick in your mouth and can it! Apologies for the anger but I just feel rather strongly about this subject. Well that’s it from me for this month, time to go enjoy the sunshine (it just started pouring rain.... wonderful). Till next month, have fun and stay safe! Aberdeen has the smallest of gay scenes and so word has a habit of getting around and this leads to slut shaming. It’s ridiculous. It’s nobody’s business but the 2 (3, 4, 5+) people that are involved in the act. Not you and your pals at the bar. With the festival season well within our sights things are looking really busy, however out on the year round theatre scene it’s been yet another busy month with a wide breath of productions on offer so let’s get to those reviews and previews. Sunshine On Leith - The Musical: The Success of Stephen Greenhorn’s script focusing on the lives of the Henshaw family as the Son Davy and his best Pal Ally return home to Edinburgh after a tour of duty in Her Majesty’s forces combined with the hits of Scottish duo The Proclaimers is nothing short of a runaway success. With the release of the amateur rights, many companies around the country are taking on the show the latest being Fife based Kelty Music Association who for the most part succeed in delivering a fun take on a show that’s packed with heart, comedy and familiar music. Playing the principal parts of Rab Henshaw and wife Jean are Peter Tomassi and Lynne Gibb who convince as a couple who have been round the block more than once and despite the revelation of a secret that has lasted throughout their 30 years of marriage leaving ripples that prooves tough to overcome. Playing the parts of their daughter Liz is Stacy Muirhead who delivers in spades as the girl with dreams of living across the ocean far from her life in the capital. As son Davy is Stephen McShane although while gorgeous and a great actor has a unique singing voice that takes a while to sink into rhythm of the show but he gets Davy’s story across in style. Rounding out the main cast is Matthew McMullan as Ally, while slightly miss cast as McMullan is obviously too young to have the background needed to completely convey Ally’s story he does often succeed in the dramatic moments in sharing Ally’s pain with the audience. Finally Megan Muirhead (real life sister of Stacey) plays Yvonne an English nurse working in Edinburgh who falls for Davy’s charms. The company utilises a large ensemble cast to play the gamut of characters that inhabit the Edinburgh which surrounds the central family and delivers on various levels some better than others. However where the show falls down are the lingering moments in the dark as scene changes take place which linger just a little too long and drag the show out to a rather overall long running time which sadly pulls the shine off the overall product. With a large band (and a surprise piper), by the end of the show the cast have done their bit to ensure a great night out is had be all and life is successfully affirmed as we walk 500 miles with the Henshaw Family. Sunshine on Leith the Musical by Kelty Musical Association. Carnegie Hall, Dunfermline. Run Ended. Captivate Theatre’s acclaimed production returns this Edinburgh Fringe in the Famous Spegieltent showing Almost Daily check www.edfringe.com Avenue Q Review: by Tiger Strode: At the King’s Theatre in Tollcross is a small cast of 11 with 8 or so puppets set in a New York suburb. No, no, Big Bird and Elmo didn’t sing about being gay or racist. It must be Avenue Q, a devilishly witty satire with Gilbertian lyrics set to perfect timing. A beautiful use of a single stage with many locations with it. In the blink of an eye one character becomes another on the other side of the stage! Flawless staging that adds to the magic of using puppets. Though the world premiere of Avenue Q was presented in the Vineyard Theatre and The Group, New York City back in 2003; It has up to date jokes weaved through it to keep it contemporary and with themes of fidelity and wondering “What do you do with a BA in English?” To keep classic as well. This feet of tongue in cheek hilarity, performed by Sell a Door Theatre Company, left the audience laughing till they cried, clapping until hand were sore and notably pensive. A must see for all ages (over 18’s only though...) Avenue Q. Kings Theatre Edinburgh. Run Ended. UK tour continues till 18th Jun. Of Mice And Men Review: The King’s Theatre Edinburgh made the wise decision to be a founder member of the “Touring Consortium Theatre Company” and as such has the ability to bring some of the best English produced drama north of the Border. One of these is John Steinbeck’s classic tale of morality in Middle America during the deprivation of the 1920’s depression that effected a generation of Americans. Kristian Phillips plays Lennie a giant of man who seemingly has a gentle side whilst being obviously mentally damaged that doesn’t understand the damage his physical power can do, his best friend George played in an effective and powerfully stated manner from William Rodell seems to be the only one who truly understands Lennie and that prooves to the ultimate downfall of them both. Beautifully staged on a wide open playing space that includes the wings, this is a production which shows you the mechanics of theatre and shows just how you can be totally captured by theatre when the performances of this high a quality are showcased to wonderful effect. The Kings got it so right when signing up to the consortium and with stellar productions like this, long may that partnership flourish as Edinburgh audiences reap the benefits of these simply beautiful pieces of unmissable theatre. Of Mice and Men. Kings Theatre Edinburgh. Run Ended. Tell Me On A Sunday Review: Andrew Lloyd Webber and Don Black’s song cycle of a London girl who moves to New York City in search of love has enjoyed much success mostly recently during its 2003 West End run when the show had an additional 30 minutes of content added to it to bring the story fully to life as a vehicle for the talented Denise Van Outen. This new 2016 production has reverted to the Original 1982 format of one 65 minute act with the original late 70’s and early 80’s setting and removing all modern references and going back to basics. With the starring role going to Jodie Prenger (who broke through on BBC’s I’d Do Anything). The actual portion of the show that is Tell Me On Sunday is fantastic with Prenger pouring her heart and soul into the part conveying the emotional discoveries of love in a highly honest way and makes for gripping viewing especially her performances of the shows big hits, Take That Look Off Your Face and Tell Me On A Sunday which brings the house down. Where the show fails is following a lengthy 30 minute interval, Jodie returns to the stage for a 30 minute second act that consists of a few songs from the musical, a duet with her understudy and a few questions from the audience which are read out by the production’s musical director. The whole second act is nothing short of padding and somewhat contrived and the show should have been sold as a one act classic and priced accordingly. However for all that being said, the show was worth the price of ticket for Act 1 alone! And makes for perfect musical theatre! Tell Me On A Sunday. Playhouse Theatre Edinburgh. Run Ended. Visits Dundee Caird Hall on 30th May and Kirkcaldy Adam Smith Theatre on 31st May. Annie The Musical Review: The timeless story of the little girl orphaned in depression Hit New York City of the 1930’s has been cherished since it first came to the stage in the 1970’s Now acclaimed producers Michael Harrison and David Ian present a brand new touring production of the show. With great Scottish actress Elaine C Smith leading the cast as Miss Hannigan this is truly a production of Annie for a new generation with a production concept that owes much to the RSC’s Matilda with the same stylish deployment of a set that use the adage of Jigsaw Pieces as a metaphor for Annie trying to put her life in both its past and future together. Elaine simply excels herself as the baddy of the story forced to work in a job looking after kids she clearly hates but would rather have the money than nothing at all, with great timing and a strong vocal ability she is what the best of Scottish theatre is all about. As Annie the delightful Madeleine Haynes smashes her way to success with the audience standing to greet her at the curtain call, these are stage kids with three different sets of kids used across the run to cope with the demands of the production and special mention must go to Alex Bourne as Daddy Warbucks who brings deep charm, a great voice and presence to the part as he transform’s Annie’s life. The only niggle of this viewing was the harshness of the sound with the pit band clearly too loud and the cast having no clarity and diction as they over project to compensate but thankfully it was more balanced by the interval and hopefully will become fine-tuned as the show beds into its run. Annie The Musical. Playhouse Theatre Edinburgh. Run Ended. UK tour continues. N early time for the Fringe again. The bustle, the tourists, the talent. So much choice, but what to see? We’ve pulled together some of our highlights that we’ll be looking forward to. Wayne Carter Teaches You How To Be Fabulous - this hirsute vision of manly couture will be returning to PBH’s Free Fringe, this year his fat arse (his words) will be gracing the basement of the Newsroom. He uses lip-syncs, jubilant dance routines and self-destructive comedic styling to highlight the plight of gender identity. By the time the show concludes, Carter makes sure everyone has an understanding of what it means to be fabulous, sometimes with the assistance of an unsuspecting audience member. 4th-28th Aug 5pm. Ever Mainard: Let Me Be Your Main Man also tackles gender identity, along with modern feminism, bad luck and outlandish stories from her Texan upbringing it is something completely new from across the pond. Horse McDonald in Careful - There are times in life when you need to be careful; growing up gay in Lanark in the 70’s, when the reward is half a pack of fruit pastilles, when the lady on the train tells you about the doctor you should meet. These would be some of those times, but you’ll always be saved if you use your voice. Horse McDonald takes us on a journey from kelpie in the Brownies to one of Scotland’s most celebrated singers, through those times when she had to be... Careful. Gilded Balloon at the Museum 3rd-29th Aug (not 15th) 7.30pm The Rules Of Inflation looks to be a dark and twisted journey (as all immersive theatre should be). What’s the connection between a right-wing political leader and a sadistic drag queen clown? Find out by going back to your childhood dream, a world full of colours, celebrations, party games and… rules? And you know the rules. You would never dare to break them, would you? Play the game, the stakes are high and there is no way out. Surgeons Hall seems like a suitably grotesque space for this lurid late night headfuck from Balloons Theatre. 15th20th Aug 11.20pm. Wilde Without The Boy is a dramatization of De Profundis, Oscar Wilde’s searing letter written to his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas, from gaol. Two years previously, Wilde had been imprisoned for gross indecency. ‘The gods had given me almost everything... Whatever I touched I made beautiful... I summed up all systems in a phrase, and all existence in an epigram.’ Gerard Logan brings Wilde to life in the Assembly Hall on the Mound, get your fix of mid-morning maudlin from 4th-29th Aug 11am. Jayde Adams - Jayde 31 We saw her in Dec in Scottee: Camp (as Christmas) and her Adele blew us away! So what does a kickass Adele impersonator do when she turns down a chance to be on a BBC show about Adele impersonators that Adele goes on (with a fake nose) that goes viral? She hauls ass to Edinburgh and puts on a show! She’ll be winning just as many fans, if it takes her another 31 years! She is so much more than just an impersonator, she’s deadpan funny, charming and mesmerising. Go see her at Voodoo Rooms 6th-29th Aug (not 17th). Axis Of Awesome Won’t Ever Not Stop Giving Up - this is the 7th year Axis Of Awesome are appearing at the Fringe and perhaps in previous years these musical comedians might not have been included with our previews. But then in Feb this year the band released a YouTube video - What’s Happened To Jordan’s Beard? In the video Jordan revealed that she is a transgender woman. She explained her lifelong struggle with gender dysphoria and how her decision to transition came during the band’s 2014 UK Tour. Benny and Lee were instantly accepting and supportive of lead singer Jordan’s gender identity and transition and the three got straight back to work recording their latest album Viva La Vida Loca Las Vegas. Welcome to the family, now time to rock (and laugh)! Gilded Balloon Debating Hall, 3rd-14th Aug 10.30pm, then 15th28th Aug (not 25th) 9pm Bourgeois and Maurice are back! Myra Dubois - Self AdMyra - Rotherham’s least celebrated daughter will be bringing her unique brand of razor sharp wit and pointed observations, as well as the odd musical number for good measure (hers is a double).Confused by other acts offering up shows about ‘things’ Myra’s show is all about her favourite subject, herself. Six years after her stint of tweeter and hostess of Eat Your Heart Out, it’s been four years since Auntie Myra’s Fun Show - now she’s back with a show where punters pay up front and she can entertain them at her leisure in Gilded Balloon’s Nightclub. 3rd-28th Aug (not 15th) 9.15pm. Bethany Black (Extra) Ordinary starred in Russell T. Davies’ Cucumber-BannanaTofu trilogy on Channel 4 and E4, becoming the first openly transgender actor to star as a trans character on UK television and the first on US broadcast television. Following on from this she played the role of 474 in the ninth series of legendary BBC show Doctor Who becoming the first openly transgender actor to appear in the show’s 50 year history. She is a former finalist in the Chortle Student Comedy Awards and was nominated for Best Debut at the 2008 Leicester Comedy Festival. She’ll share her tales of being an idiot and making history entirely by accident at Stand 2. 4th-28th (not 15th) 6pm. Finally, a regular favourite of ours, Andrew Doyle is back at The Stand with a brand new show. He promises it’ll be darker than ever (and this lad has gone pretty dark before). It’s about how you have to find a way to get on with life even when the Fates are seemingly continually trying to find inventive new ways to disappoint you (evil bitches). He’ll look at the stumbling blocks he’s had to face over the past year, and the solutions he found - many of them self-destructive but at least good for a laugh. His shows are always well thought out, intense and catching him in the bar later is like getting the Blu-Ray extras! 4th-28th Aug (not 15th) 6.35pm. Today Abhi will be our guide as we explore some of the landmarks of India’s commercial capital. What is today the City of Mumbai was once a cluster of seven islands that formed part of the kingdom of Ashoka, the famed Buddhist emperor of India. The islands were subsequently colonised by a number of different rulers including the Portuguese in 1543 and the British from 1661 until Indian Independence in 1947. Through a number of land reclamation projects and bridge building, the islands are now all interconnected to form the state of Maharashtra. Mumbai is a city of contrasts and is home to many majestic buildings from colonial times alongside modern skyscrapers, sprawling slums and some of the most expensive real estate in the world. Some fine examples of colonial buildings can be seen at the University of Mumbai and some of its many colleges, the Rajabai Clock Tower which is almost a replica of Big Ben in London, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Rail Terminus (Victoria Station) and the Bombay High Court. the Washermen at Dhobi Ghat where clothes are washed in huge tubs of water and bashed against rocks to remove dirt, stains and soap. The washers, known as Dhobis are all men and most of their work nowadays comes from Mumbai’s hotels and hospitals. The traditional way of washing is still used although some modern additions have been incorporated in the Ghat including electric dryers and irons. 1 Another serving tradition is the wholesale market or Crawford Market which sells all manner of fruits, veg and household goods. Once the only place one could buy imported goods it still provides a lot of imported produce at wholesale for resale by local businesses in Mumbai or further afield. personal shoppers are also welcome. Driving along Marine Drive southwards we head up a steep hill to reach the Hanging Gardens first built in 1880 and renovated in 1921. The gardens are built over a reservoir that provides drinking water to Mumbai and affords magnificent views of the Mumbai Skyline and the Arabian Sea. the most expensive private residence in the world, built by local businessman Mukesh Ambani at a cost of upwards of 1 billion US dollars. Over 90,000 people in Scotland have a diagnosis of Dementia, with nearly 1,800 living in the East Renfrewshire locality area that I cover. In my awareness raising to encourage communities to become more “Dementia Friendly,” I endeavour to be inclusive of all community groups. We support people living with a diagnosis, and their families, to live as well as possible with dementia. We would like to have greater visibility with the LGBTI community to increase awareness and use of our support and services. Along with other Dementia Advisors, one of the key things I do is to deliver “Dementia Friends” awareness sessions. These sessions teach people about the little things that they can do that make such a big difference to someone living with dementia. www.dementiafriendsscotland.org Many very old traditions survive today in Mumbai one of these being the work of Within Alzheimer Scotland, Promoting Excellence is part of our quality assurance framework. To build on this staff need to have a better understanding of issues affecting the LGBTI community. Tips for inclusivity for people with a dementia diagnosis, are similar to LGBTI, where individual people’s hopes and experiences are to be approached with dignity. Views are listened and heard, safety and privacy are protected, and rights respected. To endorse a holistic, person centred approach it is important to address issues around sexuality in dementia. Touch and intimacy is a basic human need, but is often perceived as a taboo within the elderly population. A recent study by the University of Manchester found that 54% of men and 31% of women over the age of 70 were still sexually active. Although attitudes are changing, the sexuality of older people has been historically overlooked. This is an area where further work is needed; much of the available information tends to be more anecdotal than grounded in research. Care homes are a specific area where in- Close-by to the Hanging Gardens is Malabar Hill, one of the most expensive areas of Mumbai and home to many Bollywood stars. The area also contains creased awareness of LGBTI would be beneficial. Some LGBTI people do not feel that support services will be able or willing to meet or understand their specific needs. They may have a fear of hostility and could well have experience of past discrimination. An individual may be uncomfortable with care staff knowing their sexual orientation. The mental capacity of the individual will influence how they respond to services. Legislation such as The Equality Act (Scotland) (2010), - and professional bodies such as the Scottish Social Services Council and the Care Inspectorate protect an individual’s rights. I would argue that we all have - responsibility when supporting people who are vulnerable, to ensure their choices are upheld. At, Alzheimer Scotland, we are looking to introduce a training toolkit “Sexuality & Dementia” where staff can be given the opportunity to better understand such issues. If you, a family member and /or friends are interested in setting up “LBGTI” Dementia friendly support groups then please contact me, Richard, at [email protected] For further information, go to the website www.alzscot.org or phone Dementia Helpline 0808 808 3000 (24 hours). £7 Lockers & £12 Cabins before 2pm Mon-Fri £7 Lockers for Students & under 26's at all times.
