The service with Donkey will be followed by lunch and Rally Day activities. Just like last year the Christian Ed Committee will be organizing all kind of fun games for kids. There will be Bean Bag Toss, Ladder Golf, Face Painting and other fun games. Since the bounce house was such a great hit, we’re ordering it again! Stay, play and eat! It will be fun for all ages! This is a great opportunity for an outreach! Join us and invite your family, friends and neighbors. Meat, drinks, and table settings will be provided; we ask that you’ll bring a dish to share. A service of Holy Communion will be held at ELC at 8:00 AM that morning. Come and join us this year as we explore God’s word in Sunday School. There are classes available for all ages. There is also a Nursery provided for parents with small children who wish to attend a Sunday School class. Children from Preschool through Grade 5 will be learning about how God is our help and we do not need to worry or fear if we trust Him. It’s an exciting program full of songs, games, crafts, activities and Bible stories. They will begin in Fellowship Hall this year because of the construction, but will move into their new rooms as soon the rooms are completed. Youth from Grades 6 through 8 will be meeting on the second floor of the church for their time together. Youth in High School will be also meeting. Stay tuned for where they will be meeting. The adults have 4 different classes available . They are: The Augsburg Class, The Discovers Class, The Book Study Class, and The Women’s Class Please look in the bulletin, in the Welcome Center and on the bulletin board near the Nursery for more information about where each class will be meeting and what they will be studying this fall. Classes begin on Sunday, September 18, 2016 at 9:30 am. Please join us for coffee and donuts in the Welcome Center before going to your class. We look forward to exploring God’s word with you this fall. 2016 43 S. Church St Waynesboro PA 17268 (717) 762-9151 www.elchome.org Pastor’s Page While watching the Olympics I was reminded of an article I had read some time ago. The following is that article. Pastor: Rev. Dennis Beaver Associate Pastor: Rev. Drahus Oslik Treasurer: Andy Rovelstad Financial Secretary: Verna Lutz Contemporary Worship Team Leader Karen Walker Organist: Deborah L. Zacher Housekeeper: Tammy Ditch Nursery Attendant: Cassandra Reed Substitute Nursery Attendant: Katrina Reed -- When you think about the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, you probably don't think about Paula Barila Bolopa. Paula was the women's 50 meter freestyle swimmer from Equatorial Guinea. She had also never been in a 50 meter swimming pool until she arrived in Sydney to compete. How did Paula qualify for the Olympics?? She can barely swim across the pool and doesn't even get her face wet when she swims freestyle. She had never stood on a starting block before the Olympics. In fact, Paula didn't even have a swimsuit when she arrived in Sydney. She was invited to participate in the competition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The IOC has a program that reaches out to athletes from developing nations who might not otherwise have the opportunity to join in the world-famous games. Why in the world would Paula travel to Sydney to compete in an event she had no possible chance of winning? It took Paula more than three times longer than it took the women's freestyle gold medalist, Inge de Bruijn of the Netherlands to finish the 50m. Perhaps sometimes it isn't about winning. When Paula finished her heat in 1 minute and 3.97 seconds, the crowd gave her a deafening round of applause. "I got very tired at the end, but the crowd urged me on," Paula confessed in a recent Sports Illustrated article. Personnel Committee Rachel Moritz, Chair Virginia Hair Dick Hersh Vivian Hickman Harold Moritz Alan Smith Darla Tornow Table Talk is a monthly publication of Evangelical Lutheran Church. Email: [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] The deadline for submissions to the Billy Strahorn I love that little story. Paula wasn't the most gifted or talented, but she finished the swim because of the crowd. She also was obviously willing to take the risk of embarrassing herself even competing in the event. So often we aren't willing to step out and try something new because we may fail or worse yet, embarrass ourselves. Maybe if we take the risk and jump in, we will realize that the "crowd", our bothers and sisters in the faith will be there to cheer us on! What are you afraid to do? Is God inviting you to jump in? I am sure Paula never regretted her decision. Page 3 Stewardship Notes Stewardship Committee Austin Shemon, Chair Pastor Dennis Bill Conrad Jim Rock Don Turley Brian Walker Simple Definition of stewardship Definition: Stewardship is managing somebody else’s stuff. A “steward” is a manager of resources that belong to another. The essential idea of stewardship is trust. Not that the steward trusts the owner or king, but that the owner or king trusts the steward. In Christian stewardship, God entrusts the creation to people. In Genesis, Adam was trusted to care for and protect the Garden. Tragically, Adam failed, resulting in shame, fear, alienation, ruin and death. In the redemption of humanity, God not only forgives and restores people to life, but to their role as the stewards of God over creation. In other words, Christian stewardship is at the very center of our identity as human beings and as Christians. Stewardship is not peripheral, but central. We are created and called, not to be served but to serve, to give ourselves to the world, for the glory of God, just as Jesus gave himself. Stewardship is who we are, and why we are here. The most common word in Scripture for steward is “servant.” “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” We are the servants of the Lord, entrusted to manage God’s resources for God’s purposes. Christianity does not have stewardship, it is stewardship. Calling all knitters, crocheters and anyone who would like to learn. Interested in belonging to an ELC Prayer Shawl Ministry? If so, please contact Barb Carroll either at 717-401-0269 or [email protected]. THANK YOU — To the Pastors, Council and Congregation of ELC Susan and I wish to thank all those that were involved in our farewell reception last Sunday. The paintings we received were excellent and a special treat since they were painted by members of the congregation. We also much appreciated the kind comments and cards about our music ministry over the last decades. Thank you again and may the ELC music ministry continue to flourish. Confirmation Prayer Partners This year we 6 ELC confirmands in our Head to the Heart confirmation program. God has blessed us with wonderful group of youth that are eager to grow in their wisdom and faith. This process is not an easy one; it requires time and commitment on their part but also support of the congregation. We’d like for each of our confirmands to have a prayer partner that would pray for them, check in with them every once in a while via note, card or a phone call, and be there for them as spiritual support and guide. Please consider this wonderful opportunity to be there for our confirmands and make a difference in their lives. The sign-up sheet is in the parlor lobby. If you were a prayer partner for one of our confirmands previous year and you’d like to continue to be their prayer partner, please indicate that on the sign-up sheet. Each year we try to start with a fresh list, so whether you’ve been a prayer partner or you’re just thinking about being one for the first time, you’re committing only for a year at a time. Thank you. Did you see the little boy on the news with the bloody head in Aleppo? There are events in life that we simply cannot understand, but God understands. Come join the Women’s Sunday School Class (formerly Bad Girls of the Bible) in the downstairs Community Room for a video study One Thousand Gifts (A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are) by Ann Voskamp. This study is based on Ann’s book by the same name that was on the New York Times best seller list for 60 weeks and has sold more than a million copies. Because the Voskamp family believes that joy is always in giving the gift back, they have donated all the royalty income to charity. Ann believes we should count our blessings even when life is hard and mundane. Hurt and heartache are truly unavoidable but, when we respond to these inevitable and unavoidable moments with a heart of gratitude, she believes “we can face these moments with grace, strength, and even what seems impossible: joy.” She shows us how to look for and find the gifts of God every day of our lives, even in times of adversity. Linda Beaver and Judy Reed teach this class. Page 9 Evangelical Lutheran Church Mark Your Calendars ELC Reach Mission Trips Golf Outing Sunday, May 21, 2017 Come and join this May for our second ELC Golf Outing. More information will be provided in the coming months. Tuesday Morning Bible Study Our Tuesday Morning Bible Study has been a phenomenal success. We have had up to 30 people attending this amazing time of fellowship and study. And there is room for more! There is no biblical knowledge needed! You will not be embarrassed! If you like to discuss news headlines and look at them from Biblical perspective, Tuesday Morning Bible Study is a place for you. Just ask someone who’s already attending. We’ll regroup on Tuesday, September 13th at 8:30 AM at the Parlor House. We’ll continue with our usual format; first we have breakfast and time for fellowship, and then we study the Wired Word Bible Study. Each study is on a different topic so you can join anytime. Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity Tuesday Morning Bible Study Soup Ministry Often times we know people in our lives that go through a difficult time. In situations like these we want to be there for them and we want to do something that will show them that we really care. People from Tuesday Morning Bible Study have made some more soup that is stored in the quart containers down in the kitchen freezers. This soup is available for any of ELC members to take to their friends and neighbors in the time of need, whether they belong to our church or they don’t. Stop by the kitchen and spread Christ’s love with a quart of soup. In June of this summer our confirmands attended the All Saint’s Confirmation Camp. It has been an amazing week of learning, worship, fellowship, making new friends, and growing in love for Christ. Confirmation Camp is an annual, week -long retreat that takes place at Camp Nawakwa and it plays a crucial role in the faith growth of our confirmands. It not only provides additional learning opportunities, but it also helps them to meet and get to know other confirmands from around our synod. This is a tremendous ministry that happens thanks to your financial support. Thank you! This year we’ll need to replenish the Confirmation Camp Fund again so that this year’s confirmands can benefit from All Saint’s Confirmation Camp ministry. We will continue to collect the loose plate offering from the 5th Sunday of every month that is designated to this fund. (This school year’s months with 5 Sundays are October, January, April and July.) You’re also welcome to contribute to this fund at any time. A special envelope for this purpose is also included in your monthly offering envelope packet. Thank you once again for your support! We believe teens are not only the future, but also have great value today. We have a dedicated Youth Committee that meets to vision, plan and organize exiting youth events, retreats and mission trips for our youth. Between Labor Day and Memorial Day, we have many Youth Group meetings, events, retreats and service projects. You might already know this, but in case you didn’t, our Youth Room is being expanded and renovated and once finished it will be equipped with new comfy couches, big screen TVs, Internet, air-hockey, fuzzball, and ping pong tables, Play Station many other amenities that enhance the ultimate youth group experience. In addition as a part of renovations we’re adding a new coffee shop style area with round tables and chairs for our youth to hang out. Our confirmation and youth calendar is not complete yet, but once it’s done it will be posted on the ELC’s Youth Webpage. If you have any questions concerning ELC Youth Ministry or if you’d like to get involved with it, please talk to Pastor CAR WASH: The youth are doing a car wash on September 25th during both worship services.
