Strongly Supported eg Byron, Burleigh, Evans & Crescent, all surfed with style & personnel awards gained As Xmas approaches and the end of year is near, time to reflect on another year of great longboard surfing and good times with the Lennox Lonboarders club. 2013 presented some excellent club round waves with some serious competion from all ages and genders. The Lennox Classic 2013, successful yes, Great Local participation & the regulars just keep on coming back. The club needs to accolade itself for again putting on such a event. Spent most of our time on the Big Island chasing volcanic lava. Then a few days at Waikiki. The big Island was a little short on good surf spots but there are plenty of other adventurous attractions - active volcanoes, snow, waterfalls and great snorkelling. The population is quite low (about 150,000) so it is pretty slow paced, and it is quite a big island. We hired a "you bought a jeep" Jeep and drove about 1000km. The locals were incredibly friendly and, quite often, were in for a long chat. I believe that it's the people that you meet that help make a trip and we met some characters. Also, some exciting news...Christina and I got married! Did the whole "sneak under the radar and elope" thing. It was very romantic. On the beach at sunset. Just the two of us and a massive Hawaiian Elvis impersonator playing a ukulele. We did however, have one witness. A huge green sea turtle appeared in the rock pool right next to us. An Hawaiian blessing they said. We missed the huge swell event that unfortunately claimed the life of a young local on the North Shore but managed to jag two great days of head high waves at Queens and some fun sliders at Canoes, Waikiki. We hired a couple of modern old skool logs - similar to yours. However, sometimes it felt like one big party wave with beginners going in all directions. I'm pretty sure they learn to surf there and then fly straight to Byron! Unfortunately we can't make it to the preso. I was looking forward to a club social function. Keen to get to know more crew. We have to catch up with family - post elope ha ha. I was just kidding about Elvis but it makes for a great story. Cheers Matt & Christina Moyle, below under the duke….. A dream any surfer could only wish for, a resort in a tropical paradise, world class waves, endless sunny days, warm nights and an escape from the so-called realities of the real world. What else could you ask for? George Leslie, with a partner, founded Sa’Moana Resort and built Samoa’s iconic surf destination. For almost 13 years the resort opened its doors providing unforgettable experiences for thousands of surfers and guests from around the world. After all the blood sweat and tears that went into building this successful destination it was taken away in one quick foul swoop when Cyclone Evan devastated Sa’Moana Resort. Cyclone Evan, a category 4 cyclone, hit Sa’Moana Resort on the morning of Thursday 13th December 2012. Prevailing for almost 3 days, the cyclone totally destroyed what was once a beautiful resort, and left the owners with hard decision, do we walk away or do we rebuild this iconic brand? In December 2011, Daniel & Kirstin Mendola (Kirstin being George Leslie’s daughter), had taken over the management of Sa’Moana Resort. Along with his contacts, Daniel’s experience in systemising companies in Australia led to both Daniel and Kirstin buying into the resort with a vision to build a big and better surf resort destination. With the assistance of George and Penny Leslie, and shareholders John and Shirley Leon, Sa’Moana Resort was on track to continue to be the best surf destination in Samoa. These plans were shattered almost 12 months to the day on the 13th December 2012 when Cyclone Evan lashed out and destroyed their dream. Knowing where to start was the hardest decision, debris all over the grounds, torn off roofing and an upside down bungalow. With 16 guests to look after and a blocked road with no access to water or electricity, it came down to true spirit and determination to get through the following days and the torturous months to come. On the day of the cyclone, Daniel, Farani and Lee made the decision to risk their lives attempting to secure the boats at their moorings at Sa’anapu in the middle of a category 4 cyclone. A trip which would usually take 45 minutes turned into an 8 hour mission. Roads had to be cleared, dodging falling trees, getting the vehicle bogged and having to walk over 6 kilometres back to the resort. Daniel, Farani, Faleniu and Lee drove to Sa’anapu the following day after the cyclone had settled to check on the boats, to also find them both totally destroyed. 3 days after the cyclone finally wound down, with the dedication of the Sa’Moana team and Salamumu villagers they cleared the road to the resort so we could evacuate our guests to Apia to the comfort of the Tanoa Tusitala Hotel. All 16 guests, happy to be safe, left Sa’Moana Resort with their best wishes and a story to tell for generations 5 With the assistance of shareholders George and Penny Leslie, John and Shirley Leon, Daniel and Kirstin Mendola, the enormous challenge of rebuilding began. Many thanks to the tradesman from Australia, a lot of them George’s mates, who volunteered their time. Then with the dedication of the Sa’Moana team, Daniel took the reins and drove the rebuilding of the resort utilising his 14 years of construction and management experience, and the rebuild of the resort was underway. After months of blood, sweat and more blood! the Sa’Moana team along with the assistance of many overseas tradesmen completed the job and we welcome you to the new bigger and better Sa’Moana Resort!
