Chairman’s Message
Dear Fellow Members,
I am very much delighted and honoured to have the opportunity of writing my
first news letter as Chairman since being elected at 18th the Annual General
Meeting on the 14th July 2015. I wish to take this opportunity to thank all Members
who encouraged and supported my participation in the election. Your General
Committee (GC) and I look forward to receiving the continuing support of each
and every Member as we continue to endeavour to deliver and, where possible
and appropriate, to enhance the sports, recreational facilities and social amenities
for all Members to meet in a sociable atmosphere agreeable to, and to the mutual
advantage of all Members.
Having been a member for more than 30 years, I have witnessed many changes
at the Club, for better or worse, in terms of membership composition, growth
and consolidation, premises renovation and redevelopment, sports and facilities
augmentation, management and financial enhancement and so on. Most pleasingly,
the ambience and greenery around us remains unscathed. In fact, during my many
years on your Membership Sub-committee, I was told by most prospective new
Members that one of their main reasons for wishing to join was the attractiveness
of our green lung or oasis in the middle of Kowloon’s high rise concrete jungle.
I have now been in post for about two months and have had the pleasure of
working with GC Members and the General Manager (GM) on your Club affairs.
In adherence to the platform I pledged at the election, your GC has started off by
taking action to revamp the Membership Sub-committee and to establish a Standing
Disciplinary Sub-committee to deal with any allegations of irregularities. GC policy,
Club management procedures, resources allocation, financial and other controls
are to be revisited, reviewed and if necessary augmented for standardization
when appropriate. Bye-Laws are being updated and amended to reflect necessary
changes stemming from identified anomalies.
As you know, our new Website was soft launched on 15th July. Details of how to
log in were posted to all Members. A Club Mobile App is also being developed as
part of your Committee’s policy of improving communications with Members. The
target launch is the end of this year; this will be progress chased but to some extent
we are in the hands of the experts. Club facilities have been improved recently with
the opening of the new Gymnasium which is twice the size of the previous facility.
New and additional changing rooms have been provided near the Multi-purpose
court and the Garden Room is under renovation for rooftop replacement and for a
general face-lift.
Garden Room
Most notably security surveillance has been enhanced and irregular but frequent
Staff spot check of membership cards introduced. This measure should not
inconvenience Members in any way and I have been greatly encouraged by the
numbers of Members who have congratulated Staff and Committee Members on
its introduction. It has greatly tightened entry security and deterred abuse use of
Club facilities.
Finally, I ask Members who observe inappropriate behaviour or who wish to draw
attention to day to day operational “issues”, if any, to ask to speak immediately to
the Duty Manager/Senior Staff on duty so that appropriate action can be taken
at once including investigation by the GM and, as appropriate, reference to your
Committee.
I shall continue, with the able support and assistance of your Committee, to pursue
the goals I set in my Manifesto for the betterment of our Club and our Members.
Patrick Cheung
Chairman

General Manager’s Message
Dear Members,
I would like to welcome back all the members who had the opportunity to travel.
Over the summer months we had the opportunity to complete some project work.
Joe Enger decided to step down after a year as Chairman deciding the clear air,
lifestyle of the Philippines far more agreeable. Joe was instrumental in building up
the clubs IT including the new car park system and played an active role in supporting
Les Pearce with the many building projects. He generously gave his time as treasurer,
and was recognised for his work by being awarded Hononary membership by the new
General Committee.
Project
Supplementary changing rooms in the multi-purpose area opened mid-July followed
by the completion of the much-awaited revamped fitness center. The fitness center is
a transformation compared to what was there before and judging by member take
up, extremely popular. Next is the Garden Room a leftover from the 1960’s with a
leaking galvanized roof, water damaged walls and termites!
Les Pearce, Projects Director, will cover more on projects in this issue.
Swimming Gala
On the 20th of September we have our annual swimming gala. Last year we were over
subscribed we expect similar this year. Like previous years, Rob Pentecost will oversee
the running of the event. We advise participants to get here early as we intend to stick
to the timetable. Please note the car park maybe exceptionally busy that day from
early morning.
We have many scheduled events planned over the coming months. Please check our
new look website for details on upcoming events.
See you around the club.
Regards,
Noel Burns
General Manager
Rob
Pentecost

It’s very healthy to see members willing to offer themselves up for election.
Significant this year for the first time was ‘proxy voting’ in compliance with the
new companies ordinance. This proved crucial when tallying up the final numbers.

The final result saw Felix Hart, Zorro Yuen being re-elected and Patrick Cheung
winning a closely run race with Les Pearce for Chairman.
Zorro Yuen

Executive Chef’s Message
Dear Members,
WITH THE holiday season over, it is great to see everybody back at the Club again, and the children back in school. Over
the next few months there will be many events you can take part in, so make sure you book early as some are close to fully
booked already.
Some very good news I can share with you is that while most of you were away on holiday, the Garden Room was
renovated. The roof was removed and replaced by a lovely and exposed pitched roof and, of course, the whole interior
was also refurbished. As a result of this, the room has become somewhat bigger and it can be booked again from midSeptember onwards. Please call Ken or Alice for your function bookings!
We are going to start this month with yet another market and this will be open for business on 6 September. With each
market, we try to bring you a good variety of products and, this time, we will have a vendor of the ever-popular Chia seeds,
a local and organic vegetable supplier, a dairy products seller and a wine and beer supplier. One of our own Members will
turn retailer and sell essential oils! Make a point of coming by, as all prices will be wholesale!
On Friday, 11 September, we will have for you a lovely seven-course Craft beer dinner featuring a total of 12 varieties of
beer and all them paired with typical pub dishes. On the following day, Saturday, 12 September, we will again have our
ever-popular sausage sizzle when 28 different types of sausage will be on offer and cooked on site right in front of you,
either grilled, boiled, stewed, or baked.
Details of most of the other events can be found in the posters around the Club, but there are two I would like to inform
you about. Members will recall that, last year, the Swimming Gala was overwhelmed by the huge crowd that turned up.
There were not enough seats, not everybody could be served and some Members left the Club hungry. So at this year’s
Swimming Gala, we have decided to provide a big buffet at the marquee for the very reasonable price of HK$88 per adult
and HK$38 per child. Also, we will permit swimwear in the marquee and the air-conditioning will be set at a comfortable
temperature so Members won’t feel cold. At the time of writing, we did not have all the details of the yearly Jazz night,
so we will inform you about it later by email. The date is set, however, for Saturday, 17 October, so you can make a note
of this in your diary.
See you around at the Club.
Best wishes,
Marco Veringa

The 2nd Inter-club Match between

Again, pairs better-ball match-play

We thank all the USRC Members,
who participated in the game and
helped make the day so much fun.
We look forward to having more
great golf adventures and hearing
more good stories in the future.
See you on the course.

Our girls will also have the privilege of playing the season opener
in the 35-over Women’s League on the 24 October.
Cricket News
by Ahmed Saleem,
Cricket Convenor
It’s official – our USRC Women’s Team
has been accepted to play in all HKCA
competitions for the coming 2015~16
cricket season.
The League will continue playing matches up to the final game
on the 24 February which will also feature USRC. So, not only will
we open the season but we will also close it - which will certainly
be good for our reputation!
There will also be Women’s Premier League matches from the 31
October to the 31 January in which each of our girls will be given
the opportunity of earning a place in one of the teams.
So, there will be a lot of cricket for the girls and we wish them all
a successful first season.
Following the amazing response that we received from 39
members of the fair sex, the HKCA had no hesitation in admitting
the USRC into all of its Women’s Cricket competitions.
Juniors
These will commence with the T20 Cup on the 6 September with
USRC playing in one of the three opening games on that day.
While the fixtures for these Leagues have not yet been posted,
we are well prepared for the upcoming season with a crop of
outstanding young players.
Our girls will then play a T20 game every week in September and
October and then have a break from the 18 October until the
21 February 2016.
They will then play each week until the 3rd of April with just one
day off on the 6 March.
We have again entered teams in the HKCA’s U11, U13, U15 and
U17 Leagues.
Since we first entered our boys in these Leagues three years ago,
they have done nothing but bathe us in Glory and we have no
doubt that they will continue to do this!
Best of luck to you all.

Basic Snorkel Diver Course
Jocelyn Ng age 9 (in black swimsuit in
photos), (daughter of a USRC member)

and a friend, Serene (8), both completed
a British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC) Basic
Snorkel Diver (BSD) course in July with

Marine Divers (MD). The girls are now

qualified Basic Snorkel Divers, congratulations, a big achievement.
MD is the service provider for SCUBA and
Snorkelling courses at USRC. The USRC
has some of the best facilities in Hong
Kong for diver training.
The BSD course takes approx 5 hours, and
consists of entrance tests, 2 pool lessons
and pool assessments, in the controlled
environment of the pool. Depending on
age the course
can be completed in one
half day for
adults and juniors, or spread
over 3 days for
older kids, or
spread over 4
days for ages 6
to 8, so the little ones don’t get too tired.
The BSD course stresses water safety, and
gives participants a basic knowledge of
using snorkelling equipment, including for
surface dives to get closer to marine life
(so they don’t have to stay on the surface
in a lifejacket like most people who go
snorkelling !).
After completion of the BSD course,
students can expand their skills on the

Snorkel Diver Course in the pool, then
on the Open Water Snorkel Diver Course
when they progress to going in the sea.
Students qualifying as snorkellers are invited to join Marine Divers Sub-Aqua Club
(MDSAC). They can then attend Tuesday
Club Afternoons in the summer to practice
their skills, for free.
If you or your children are interested in
attending a BSD course to become a

qualified Snorkeller, please contact Marine
Divers: [email protected]. The best
option is to get your own group together
for a private course to suit your availability,
available till end October.

Scubawise (Refresher) Course
Kari Schroeder (USRC member), and Niko
Chan, both qualified BSAC Ocean Divers,
who havnt dived for a while, completed a
British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC) Scubawise
(SW) refresher course on 8 Aug 2015 with
Marine Divers (MD), on the hottest day
ever recorded in Hong Kong! Their next
step is to do checkout dives in the sea,
then they will both be back “in date” for
further dive trips in Hong Kong and overseas, and for the Sports Diver upgrading
course.
The SW course takes approx
5-6 hours, and consists of a
theory lesson on safety aspects of getting back into diving after a break; a pool session to assess current skill levels
and to improve them; and for
BSAC divers, an Ocean Diver
exam to assess their knowledge. The course can be done
in one morning or spread over
two evenings. The SW course
is available to any qualified diver who has
not dived for a while, who wants to consolidate their skill level before doing sea
dives.
If you havnt dived for some time, and wish
to do a refresher course before going back
in the sea; and/or check-out / warm-up
dives please contact Marine Divers: info@
marinedivers.com. We can provide training for individuals or groups to suit your
availability.

by Eder Ferreira,
Football Convenor
For USRC Power, Lander Panera won the Player of the Season
and Goal of the Season awards, while Humberto Toscan and
Federico Martorell were named Top Scorer and Most Improved
Player, respectively.
For USRC Experience, Dom Masserela was voted Player of the
Season and Ben Fung was chosen as Most Improved Player. Dave
Buckley won the Top Scorer award, while Roy Man was crowned
with the trophy for Goal of the Season.
The 2014-15 season was a very successful one for USRC, with
the 1st Team and USRC Power both winning their respective cup
competitions and a USRC-BTS side emerging victorious in the
prestigious HKFC International Soccer Sevens.
Before the awards ceremony, players from all three teams took
part in the annual seven-a-side Smart Cup, where, in the final,
Team Hong Kong triumphed over the Rest of the World, courtesy
of a hotly disputed penalty.
The USRC-BTS team celebrates its victory in the HKFC
International Soccer Sevens.
Captain Paul Madden receives the Smart Cup on behalf of Team

End-of-year event
Football Section AGM
There was plenty to celebrate, then, at the end-of-year awards
ceremony, where Paolo Miranda bagged the Player of the Season
and Goal of the Season trophies for the 1st Team, with Marcello
Vastela and Gianni Melwani taking the awards for Top Scorer and
Most Improved Player, respectively.
The Annual General Meeting of the Football Section was held
on 19th June. With Vince Docherty and Alan Urmston stepping
down as Convenor and Secretary, respectively, the new Football
Section Sub-committee is now made up of the following:
Eder Ferreira (Convenor)
Andy Mitchell (Secretary)
John Slater (Treasurer)
Laurence Rudge (Manager, USRC Power)
Rick Leone (Manager, USRC Experience)
Texas Sze (Manager, USRC Vitesse)
Alan Urmston (Adviser)
An eighth member of the sub-committee will be appointed
before the commencement of the new season, when a replacement has been found for Bruno Cannavan, who is stepping down
as manager of the 1st Team.
Marco Vastela collects his award for Top Scorer for the 1st
Team.

The vision for the coming season is to build on the successes
of last season to mount a serious challenge in all three league
competitions: the Yau Yee League 1st Division (the 1st Team),
the Legal League Division 1 (USRC Power) and the Legal League
Division 2 (USRC Experience).
Just as importantly, we are committed to providing fortnightly
football for club members in our newly established team, USRC
Vitesse. Vitesse will offer social football
on Friday nights to players of 35 years or
above.
Coaching for kids
At the other end of the age spectrum, we
are actively building rapport and developing potentials for the future by involving
members’ children in USRC football, as
part of our collaboration with Brasil Top
Skills (BTS). One of these children, 10-yearold Ryo Higano, has recently returned
from a summer coaching camp in Brazil,
where he had the opportunity of meeting
footballing legend Rivaldo.
Back in Hong Kong, BTS summer camps
have been running throughout July and
August at King’s Park. And from the end of
August through to the end of December,
soccer training programmes will be run
for 3-16-year-olds at both King’s Park and
USRC. For more details pick up a flyer from
Reception, or email [email protected].
KPSA charity event
On 8th and 15th August, members of
the Football Section, including USRC club
members and coaches from BTS, took part
in a charity event organised by the King’s
Park Sports Association (KPSA).
The event, which also involved
representatives from the Hong Kong

Rugby Football Union, Yau Yee League,
Kowloon Cricket Club and USRC Tigers,
provided two mornings of football and
rugby coaching for underprivileged
children in Hong Kong, in conjunction

with the Changing Young Lives Founda-
tion and the Po Leung Kuk Residential
Child Care Centre.
The KPSA charity event is the first of
several charity activities in which the Football Section will be taking part this year.
The activities include the Yau Yee League
9s - a pre-season nine-a-side tournament
organised by the Yau Yee League, with
proceeds going to the Nepal Red Cross
Society - and an end-of-the-year event in
USRC.

Lawn Bowls News
by Kelvin Lin,
Lawn Bowls Convenor
Summer finally came. All Summer League games ceased and
took a summer break until late August. During this period,
bowlers would switch to other activities while our green closed
for maintenance.
In-house Training for Lawn Bowl Etiquette
and Rules
Our development officer, Dr. Annie Yeung, arranged an In-House
Training session on Friday, June 19 as refreshment and training
for bowlers. The main topics touched upon where etiquette
and rules. The training was very popular and attracted many
members, including senior and junior bowlers, to participate.
There was a discussion session which members found particularly interesting and helpful, and as much as these topics will be
emphasized more in future trainings sessions.
Novice Single 2015 Competition
This year, our lady bowler, Miss Irene Ho, made an incredible
achievement by fighting until the final round, and won RunnerUp in the final competition. We are so proud of her!
Sand Lay Party – Fertilizing the Green
On July 5, 2015, many enthusiastic bowlers came back to the club
and helped USRC staff fertilize the green.
It was such a sunny and hot day, and working under the scorching sun definitely was not fun! Yet, our bowlers were so helpful,
and dedicated to the task that the fertilizing progress went on
smoothly and speedily.
Snacks and drinks were well-served, and it was a nice gathering and party as a whole! Thank you all for your great efforts
rendered to the green! We are sure our green will be much better
and nicer to accommodate our coming league games.
Invitation to play in HKPBC to celebrate
their 110-Year Anniversary
HK Police Bowling Club is celebrating their 110-Year Anniversary,
and invited many bowling clubs to participate in their matches as
one of their celebration programs.
As usual, USRC bowlers teamed up based on their own choice,
and an in-house competition was held to decide which team
would be the winner and represents USRC at this special
function. The winning team turned out to include: Dicky Wong,
Stanley Wat, Iggy Yip and Nick Au Yeung, who attended the part
representing USRC. USRC prepared a souvenir for presentation to
HKPBC during the dinner.

Reciprocation of Friendly
Game with HKCC
If you remember, we invited HKCC to
our club for a friendly game last year on
November 23, 2014. HKCC then invited us
to play in their club on August 1, 2015.
We are lucky that the weather was not
too hot, and we spent an
enjoyable afternoon with
HKCC bowlers. Thirtytwo of us attended the
occasion, and similar event are strongly
encouraged to be arranged every year.
The events enhance friendship and promote bowling techniques and experience
among different lawn bowling clubs.
Re-opening of the Green
Our green is planned to be re-opened on
August 12, 2015 to provide sufficient time
for bowlers to practice. The official Green
Opening Ceremony, with roasted pig
cutting and happy bowling, will be held
on August 15. We will report further on
this issue in the next edition.

Eddie Wu, Tennis Convenor
The 2015 Winter League Registration
The Men’s and Ladies’ Summer League ended well, with all
USRC teams having had an enjoyable and fruitful season. We
continue to be a strong club within the local competition. I would
like to express our congratulations to all captains and players in
our teams, well done and we are proud of their stunning performance and the efforts they have made for the Club. As agreed
at the recent EC/Captains’ meeting held on 29th July, we will
once again have six teams competing in the HKTA leagues this
winter. They will include Ladies A+, Ladies A, Men B, two Men C
and Men D teams. We expect our teams to be very competitive,
especially the Ladies A and Men B teams which have several new
players.
One of our tennis members, Karen Lam intended to form a Ladies
B team, but unfortunately this could not be done due to insufficient players being available. However, we would still like to form
a Ladies B team in our section so I hereby invite all ladies with a
similar level of ability and who would like to play for the Club to
contact Karen Lam. It would be nice to have a Ladies B team next
season so please call Karen on 91236660 and she looks forward
to hearing from you.
This is a friendly reminder that the HKTA requests all clubs participating in league matches to inform their club team members
that:
(i) They must ensure that they are fit enough to participate in the
league;
(ii) People who are pregnant or suffer from any chronic illness,
such as heart disease or high blood pressure, are advised not
to participate in the league, but if they choose to do so, they
do so at their own risk.
Resurfacing of Tennis Courts
The resurfacing of our Tennis Courts 3 and 4 is still outstanding
and the GC, the club management and the tennis committee
are monitoring this project closely. Recently, James, our operation manager, talked about the resurfacing plans during our EC/
Captains meeting. He suggested and explained that there were
three options and gave his comments on them. This was followed
by a general discussion. Option number three, the installation of
artificial turf was not recommended by James or liked by ECs and
Captains. Thus, a decision will have to be made between option
numbers one and two. The quotation for option number one,
which envisages a new top surface of Courtsol made in France, is
around HK$654.000 for two courts plus two years warranty for
products and installation. The quotation for option number two,
which offers a top surface by Nova made in the USA and provided by another supplier, is around HK$432,000 for two courts
including one year warranty for products and installation. Both
will be hard courts placed on a 75mm thick layer of reinforced
concrete, on top of the existing surface plus acrylic coating and
paint, with coating on the top surface of the courts. James, Eddie
and Martin tested out option one at Shatin College earlier this
month and option two on August 5 at Ling Nam University and
the price is still being negotiated with the suppliers. The intention
for courts 3 and 4 to be resurfaced before the Winter League
commenced or half-way through, was discussed. However, after
discussion it was decided that work would begin after the winter
league had finished, i.e., at the end of November 2015.
Veteran League and HKTA League 2014
Congratulations to Our Ladies’ A+ Veteran Team which became
champions of the Veteran League 2014/2015. The HK Veteran
Tennis Association awarded the trophies to the Ladies’ Veteran
Team players and Captain Linda Tong on 13 June 2015. Our
Ladies A+ Veteran Team has become champions twice and been
first runner-up several times within the last five years. This was a
huge team effort by a fantastic team, led by Linda. We heartily
congratulate all team-members!
The Committee wishes all league players the best of luck and
hopes they have some enjoyable, friendly but competitive
matches in the coming Winter League!
Tennis Section Registration
Please sign up at reception if you would like to be an “official”
member of the Tennis Section. By doing so, you will be able to
enjoy many activities such as tennis “fun days”, various social
events, tennis tours, etc. Also, membership allows you to take
part in the HKTA League and join our Club tournament.
Election of Team D Vice Captain 2014-2015
An election for the Team D vice-captain took
place in July 2015. The new vice-captain will
replace the late Eric. Voters were the players
of the D team and the election was held in a
fair and transparent manner. Congratulations
to Sharad Gupta who was elected as Team D
vice-captain.

Congratulations to Kyle
Kyle has had a very memorable summer this year. He spent a
month training and playing tournaments in Tarragona (south
of Barcelona, Spain) accompanied by his Spanish coach Pepe
Caballero. Kyle stayed with a local family, which also had two
sons who played tennis. He entered four tournaments and won
the Boys U14 Singles championship at the Club Torredembarra.
He also reached the semi-finals in the other Boys U14 tournaments. This was a wonderful experience for Kyle as he played
on red clay courts and also
learned something about
the local culture. Kyle’s
presence at the tournament was widely reported
in the local media and
there was coverage in the
newspapers and on a TV
Sports Channel.
Club Tournament
Sponsored by
Billy Lau
We would like to invite all of you to support and participate in
a mixed-doubles championship tournament to be held on 20th
September 2015, at the Club. This tournament including all
trophies, food and

drink will be sponsored by Billy Lau
to mark his retirement from CAS at
the age of 60. For
the sake of fairness,
the working committee has decided
that Ladies A+ will
be required to partner with Men’s C or
below and
Ladies
A must partner
with Men’s B or
below. Our thanks

to C
 indy, Derek and
Martin who will

help
organise the
tournament.
New uniforms for the Winter League
As agreed at the recent EC/Captains’ meeting, a sub-
committee was formed, including Katy, Martin and Charlie,
to be responsible for coordinating this new uniform project.
Some designs for the uniform are shown here in the pictures
provided by one of our contractors. Committee members
and some team captains gave their comments and suggestions on these uniforms and we are now in the process of
finding someone to make them. We hope we will be able
to wear them for the upcoming tennis season, which begins in September. Once the sub-committee decides on the
best contractor on the list of suppliers who tendered, team
captains will be asked to submit their team requirements.
Tennis Guest Rules
Some members, particularly new members, are unclear about
the Tennis Guest Rules. I hereby reproduce the Club by-laws to
outline how they work and what general rules of behaviour must
be complied with. The intention is to introduce members to the
Tennis Guest Rules of the club, make new members feel welcome
and clarify any ambiguity.
1. According to the USRC guest rules, non-member guests are
allowed to play a maximum of 3 times a month. We kindly
ask you not to bring guests to the courts between 6-9 pm
on weekdays and 1-6 pm on Saturdays or before 2 pm on
Sundays and Public Holidays.
2. The Tennis Convener and the General Manager can give
their approval for special arrangements such as inviting team
guests from other clubs for social tennis or similar occasions.
3. To ensure fairness to members and to comply with By-Law
37.b (9), we would ask you to please display membership
cards and guest cards (if hosting guests) at the court entrance
to verify that your court was booked by a member. Club staff
will check the displayed members’ cards from now on. Do
remember to pick up your card after your game.

In this hard match between two juniors, newcomer Ray Man beat

HK Squash Presentation Dinner
After one of the toughest seasons ever, the 2014-2015 winter
league concluded with the HK squash presentation dinner. USRC
was represented by members of Teams 1 and 2 who attended to
collect their silverware. As usual, it was a highly entertaining night
and a chance to catch up with the movers and shakers of the HK
squash fraternity as well as with fellow competitors.

Masters Championship
Team 1: Raymond Chiu, Joe Wong, Anson Kwong, King Ngo
Wong and King Yat Wong
This was another hard match between two old hands who have
been trading blows (on the squash court) for many years. Both
knew each other’s game and produced another five-setter. Ross
set off like a rocket and went 2-0 up before Kermit staged one
of his famous comebacks to win 3-2 and become USRC Masters
Champion for the first time.

USRC squash championships and annual
dinner
Following on from the winter league, the next challenge for the
players was the USRC Squash Championships. As with last year,
there were four competitions – Open, Masters, Handicap and
Plate for first round losers in the Open and, as last year, there
were numerous close matches with high quality squash.

Handicap Championship
This has been one of the favourite competitions in recent years
as the well-adjusted handicaps have resulted in different styles
of play with many even matches and some big names departing
early in the competition. A resurgent Ross reached his second
final of 2015, and faced a much younger competitor in Quincy
who, with the advantage of his younger legs, went on to win
the match.
Quincy Chow beat Ross Parker 3-1
Plate Championship
This was fought between two heavyweights of the Masters
team, Big Ken and Big Mac. Big Ken was first out of the blocks
and ran away with the first game before Big Mac found his range,
taking the next three sets from a very nervous and tired-looking
Big Ken.

The New Gymnasium
The new gym was opened on 21 August following a complete refurbishment.
The project has been on the back burner for several years. It was shelved for a
while in favour of the proposed ‘Masterplan’ (which was to incorporate a gym
within a proposed new indoor sports hall complex). For various reasons, the
Masterplan itself has had to be shelved, which gave the gym renovation the
green light.
The aim of the refurbishment has been to create additional space
and a pleasant relaxing environment for users.
The introduction of more natural light into the building is intended
to redress the previously rather claustrophobic atmosphere. In order
to create a more ‘open’ feel, the old low flat roof has been replaced
by a pitched roof. The roof itself, using traditional steel rafter and
tile construction, is designed to be sympathetic to the Club’s heritage
and character.
As part of the refurbishment we have taken the opportunity to
improve the hard and soft landscaping in the vicinity, including (at
last) relocating and hiding the numerous electricity cables conduits
and pipes that had been strewn haphazardly across the roof of the old gym
and garden room. That unsightly mess had remained for at least the past half
century. How the British Military at the time permitted such blatantly defective
work to be undertaken is extraordinary. How successive GC’s were content to
live with it for so long is equally curious.
I would like to thank our General Manager, Noel Burns, for his excellent
management of the project and for bringing it in on time and within
budget. Noel’s input to the design has been invaluable and many of the
features, including the industrial style lights and use of natural brickwork,
are his initiatives.
James Li, our facilities manager, has also done an excellent job as have all
USRC staff involved in the project.
The gym project is part of our ongoing commitment to improve and enhance
the facilities of our Club with particular respect to the long tradition of the
USRC as a sporting club.
We hope you like the result.
Les Pearce
Project Director

Club Exchange – Reciprocal Clubs
The International Club Berlin
Thüringer Allee 5-11
14052 Berlin
Tel: +49 30 30 67 22-0
Fax: +49 30 301 98 38
Email: [email protected]
Away from the hourly-burly of the
metropolis yet still in the midst of things,
the International Club Berlin is where
people from the worlds of diplomacy,
politics, business, culture and academia
come together to network as well as
for recreational and social relaxation.
Founded in 1994, this successor to the
Berlin Ice-skating Club and the British
Officers’ Club offers its members an
exclusive setting for maintaining social
and business contacts and invites you to
mingle with friends and acquaintances in
a relaxed country club atmosphere.
The club, located in western Berlin, enjoys
an unmistakable English character and
is surrounded by majestic trees and extensive park-like grounds. In addition to the
private restaurant with its various hospitality rooms and bars, there are extensive
sports facilities including a pool.
The International Club Berlin is under
the patronage of H.R.H The Prince of
Wales and includes among its honorary
members, alongside the governing mayor
of Berlin and the current ambassador of
Great Britain.
The history of the International Club
Berlin reaches back to the late 19th
century, a period of great urban growth.
It was the Berlin Ice-Skating Club, founded in 1893, which acquired the property
on Thüringer Allee in 1920 in order to
construct sports facilities and a private
club house. During the summer, tennis
was played on more than a dozen courts,
42
people came together socially or to play
chess or to fence and of course in winter
for ice-skating on the rink created by
spraying water over the centre court by
the club house. For many years the recreational location was a mainstay in Berlin’s
social life. In June 1945 the grounds and
buildings became the home of the British
Officer’s Club. After the withdrawal of
the British protecting forces from reunified Berlin, 35 Berlin citizens founded the
International Club Berlin e.V. in 1994,
with the aim of carrying on the tradition
of the British Officer’s Club at this location and the intention of creating a place
for Berlin’s foreign guests, diplomats and
representatives from the business and
media worlds to network with the citizens
of the German capital. The British heir
to the throne, His Royal Highness Prince
Charles, is patron of the International
Club Berlin just as he was during the era
of the British Officers’ Club.
Secluded, peaceful and green: the
grounds, located in the western part of
Berlin include a charming club house and
extensive garden surrounded by majestic
trees. In addition to the in-house restaurant, members and guests have access to
numerous reception rooms offering the
perfect setting for private, business and
social occasions of all kinds. Non-members may also book these facilities for
receptions, conferences and banquets.
Additionally, the club’s on-site facilities
include:
• 8 tennis courts more…
• swimming pool with children’s pool
and shaded lawn for relaxation more…
• basketball, badminton, chess and table
tennis as well as a goal wall.
