Rust Preventatives
COLD GALVANIZING
Galmet Cold Galvanizing is an organic rich zinc coating with approximately 92% zinc in
the dry film. It provides long term protection to steel because of the cathodic (galvanic)
action between the steel and metallic zinc in the coating. This action prevents rust from
developing under Galmet Cold Gal.
It also produces a self healing mechanism where if the Galmet Cold Gal is scratched,
zinc oxides and carbonates form in the scratch and effectively reseal it. Metallic zinc
coatings are universally accepted as the best method of rust prevention. Galmet Cold
Gal offers this protection combined with ease of preparation and application.
IN THE BEGINNING
The Galmet family of metal protection products began back in 1960, from a modest office in Bridge
Street Sydney. In a short time the company’s zinc rich primers and coatings, most notably Galmet
Cold Galvanizing, were established as Australia’s premium anti-rust products.
Following the success of Cold Galvanising, an innovative rust converter, Ironize, was added to
the range. By the late 1970’s, Galmet expanded it’s product range to include aerosol primers and
anti-corrosive spraying enamels. These included Epoxy Rustpaint, a high performance enamel
for industrial and domestic use, Spraypaint, a fast drying spray enamel for industrial use, and the
Galmet Fence Gutter Facia range, which incorporates the latest Colorbond® colours.

Anti-Corrosive Primers
KEYTITE METAL PRIMERS
KEYTITE STEEL PRIMER is a slow drying, single pack alkyd primer designed to penetrate
lightly rusted surfaces. Its anti-corrosive pigments passivate metal surfaces to provide good
adhesion prior to the application of a topcoat, as well as combining superior steel wetting
and flow characteristics for easy application with a brush or roller.

IRONIZE - RUST CONVERTER
Ironize is a fast acting treatment for rusted steel prior to painting. Ironize performs
two functions in one process:
1. Conversion of rust to form a black, inert stable surface
2. Dries in 20 minutes to a hard but flexible membrane
It prevents rust from premature development under paint and is suitable for brush
or roller applications. Ironize Rust Converter contains no phosphoric acid and
does not need to be rinsed before topcoating, unlike other products.

Galmet DuraGal is an anti-corrosive silver protection paint. The main purpose of
this unique product is to provide corrosion protection to DuraGal® steel, iron, and
galvanizing, giving the appearance of a bright galvanized surface.

HYDRO-TUFF RUSTPAINT
Galmet Spraypaint is a fast-dry, high gloss, steel and structural enamel used as a general
purpose industrial finishing coat. It is formulated to provide a tough coating for the protection
of metal surfaces.
Galmet Hydro-Tuff is a true water-based enamel rustpaint specifically formulated to
protect and beautify both new and old metal surfaces. It provides a hard-wearing,
highly durable, abrasion and corrosion resistant film.
Recent breakthroughs in resin technology have finally allowed the formulation of
enamel paints to include the added benefit of water clean-up, whilst retaining all
of the advantages of traditional solvent-borne enamels. These advantages include
brushability, flow, gloss, substrate wetting and abrasion resistance.

HAMMERED METAL FINISH
Galmet Hammered Metal Finish is a single pack, gloss enamel which, as it dries, produces a
dimpled, metallic-finish coating. The dry coating simulates the effect of sheet metal hammered
with a ball pein hammer. It protects and beautifies rough or damaged surfaces and is ideal
for hiding scratches and surface imperfections, whilst providing a tough, durable corrosion
resistant finish. It is recommended for the restoration of old steel and metal structures.

FAQ’s
I don’t have the right thinners, what else can I use?
Galmet Rustpaint, Spraypaint, Keytite Steel Primer, Galmet Industrial Primer and Galmet Hammered Metal
Finish can be thinned to spray with a good quality enamel spraying thinner or lacquer thinner.
Galmet Cold Galvanizing can be thinned with a small amount of Mineral Turps to brush. Keytite Etch Primer
can be cleaned up with Acetone.

How much heat will Galmet Metal Protection coatings take?
Keytite Etch Primer up to 200°C.
Rustpaint and Keytite Steel Primer up to 150°C.
Spraypaint and Galmet Duragal Silver up to 120°C.
Galmet Cold Galvanizing, Hammered Metal Finish and Ironize are all thermoplastic and will produce
temperature resistance up to 100°C.
Galmet Hydro-tuff Rustpaint up to 150°C.
Can I paint wood with your products?
Galmet Rustpaint, Hydro-Tuff and Hammered Metal Finish have been used successfully on timber. Porous
surfaces would need to be primed with an appropriate sealer before application of the Galmet product.
Can I tint Galmet Paints?
Galmet makes tint bases in the Rustpaint range that may be tinted by Hardware and Paint stores. Tint
formulations for most common tinter systems are available.Contact your local paint shop or ITW Polymers &
Fluids Technical department for further advice.
Can I paint Cold Galvanizing over Ironize?
No - Cold Galvanizing must be in direct contact with clean steel. Ironize treatment results in an insulating layer
between the steel and the zinc in the Cold Gal and no galvanic protection will occur.
Can Duragal be used as a primer? 
No, Duragal is self-priming. It is not a primer for other topcoats
Can I spray Galmet Ironize? 
Yes. The product would need to be thinned slightly with water (say 10% by volume) and spray pressure kept
as low as possible to avoid shear-shocking the latex. Any metal parts in the spray gun which have come into
contact with the Ironize should be cleaned as soon as possible after use. Clean using water.

Can I paint Galmet Ironize over clean steel? 
No, Ironize is a rust converter, not a rust preventative coating, therefore it will only react with rust. Ironize that
has been put onto steel can be painted directly over with no need to remove.
The Hammered Metal Finish paint is too thick, what can I do? 
The paint is thick to stop it sagging on vertical surfaces and to achieve a good hammered finish. To make it
easier to brush we recommend the can be placed in hot water for 15 minutes and mixed well.
Can I use Rustpaint without a primer? 
Galmet Rustpaint may be used on steel without a primer in mild service conditions eg: interior or
non-coastal country areas.
Appropriate primers must be used for all other substrates (including galvanized steel) and on steel for all other
service conditions. Correct preparation is the key to a long lasting system.
