RANCHO MIRAGE spreads its verdant carpet
across the desert floor between the Santa Rosa
Mountains to the south and the snow-capped San
Jacinto range on the west. Presidents, corporate
executives and Hollywood celebrities have designated this enclave the preferred luxury destination
in the Palm Springs Valley. Home to the Valley’s
finest resorts Rancho Mirage lodging properties
recently invested over $900 million in renovations
and reconstructions. Rancho Las Palmas Resort
& Spa featuring Splashtopia and Lazy River is a
favored destination for successful families. The
Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa features roundthe-clock gaming excitement and sumptuous
rooms, spa, dining and headliner fun all housed in
the Valleys only skyscraper property. The Westin
Mission Hills, with its spectacular views of the
snow-capped San Jacinto Mountains, superb
golf courses and the “Heavenly Bed” is an oasis
of indulgence. The Villas at the Westin provide
apartment vacation accommodations with private
patios and grilling equipment. Soon, the only Five
Star resort in the Valley, The Ritz Carlton Rancho
Mirage will open after undergoing a major $500
Million renovation. Located on a spectacular bluff
over-looking the Palm Springs valley this resort will
be the only Five Star logging property in the Valley.
The Hilton Garden Inn and the Country Inn &
Suites by Carlson located adjacent to The River
— Rancho Mirage’s dining and entertainment
destination - provides the discriminating traveler
the perfect combination of luxury, value and access
to Restaurant Row.

A GLANCE at Rancho Mirage’s street names
— Gerald Ford, Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Dinah
Shore, Ginger Rogers, Dean Martin — sums up this
city’s reputation as a playground for presidents and
celebrities. Its world-class offerings set amid tranquil desert vistas entice the most discerning visitors
to live, play, and work in Rancho Mirage, resulting
in a dynamic, affluent city with an excellent business
forecast and a firm grasp on its goals.
“We do not want to be a bedroom community,
nor a sprawling metropolis but, rather, a sophisticated, small desert resort city with unique qualities
that can be economically managed into the distant
future,” Mayor Dana Hobart says.

“Beyond
professional
opportunities,
it’s a great place
to raise a family.”
THE COACHELLA VALLEY is
growing in many ways, and so is
Eisenhower Medical Center, says
its president and CEO, G. Aubrey
Serfling.
When he joined EMC more than
11 years ago, he says, “I saw it as a
diamond in the rough. The medical
sophistication hadn’t kept pace with
the growth and sophistication of
the Coachella Valley. I felt [EMC]
was crying out for new leadership,
and I had a good sense of the vision:
to transform what was a good
community hospital into a major,
state-of-the-art medical center and
teaching hospital.”
Under his leadership, EMC has
expanded its Rancho Mirage campus
and added primary and specialty
care facilities in La Quinta and Palm
Springs, as well as outpatient clinics
for primary and urgent care. “We’ve
put $700 million into improvements
of facilities and equipment,” Serfling
says. “The investments are built on
the belief that there will be steady
growth.”
Recruiting doctors to support
the growth has been relatively easy.
“A lot of them find it a very nice
place to live,” he says. “Beyond the
professional opportunities, it’s a
great place to raise a family. I love it
here and expect to retire here.”

“Eisenhower works

employees the right
kind of wellness
programs.”
AS THE DESERT’S only not-for-profit hospital,
Eisenhower Medical Center relies on its
foundation to raise money for expansion and
innovation. As president of the foundation,
Michael Landes is fundraiser in chief.
Landes and his wife, Stephanie, moved
their continuing medical education firm to the
Coachella Valley in 1987. “We knew we would
become exhausted on the road and wanted to
come back to a place that was beautiful,” he
says. “We made this our home, raised three kids
here, and we’re thrilled. [The Coachella Valley]
is a place that will energize and inspire you.”
Landes sold the business and joined EMC
to lead its education-oriented Annenberg
Center for Health Sciences. Later, as
foundation president, he helped raise more
than $400 million for the medical center.
“Eisenhower works with businesses to provide
their employees the right kind of wellness
programs to keep them healthy and fit,”
Landes says. In turn, businesses — and more
than 5,000 individuals — support EMC.
The next frontier is becoming a teaching
hospital. “We intend to attract about 55 new
primary-care residents and their families,”
Landes says.

JOSEPH SCHERGER, MD, MPH
Eisenhower Medical Center
JOSEPH SCHERGER just turned 60, but says living in
the Coachella Valley makes him feel like he’s 40.
“Everyone in their 70s and 80s is very active,” says
Eisenhower Medical Center’s vice president for primary
care. “The people here want to be healthy. People come
and live in the Coachella Valley to be as active and
healthy as long as they can, and our job is to help them
do that.
“I’d often thought that if I could find a place that
wanted to move into the future in a place that I would
love to live, it would be great to go there, and that
dream came true here at Eisenhower,” says Scherger,
who explains that he has been working on “redesigning
primary care for the computer age.”
“We do a very innovative model of primary care,”
he says. “It is a model that uses online communication,
securely, between the patient and doctor.”
EMC also asked Scherger to recruit the best and
brightest primary care doctors he could find. “That was
easy because of how attractive this area is, but also
because the primary care model we offer is attractive.
We give doctors time with patients,” he says.
With residencies being offered at EMC beginning in
2013, Scherger foresees a bright future for the growth
of the medical community. And with his love of golf, he
foresees a bright future for himself.
“I have so many role models — people coming in 75
to 85 years old who invite me to play golf with them on
Saturday. I look at them and I see how they live; and I say,
‘I know what I’m going to be doing in 10 or 20 years.’”

ALAN WILLIAMSON was born in Riverside
but grew up around the world. After
medical training from coast (Los Angeles)
to coast (New York), he thought he would
return to Los Angeles. “After I looked at job
opportunities there and got reintroduced
to the traffic, crowding, and smog, I realized
I would rather live in the Coachella Valley,”
says the chief medical officer and vice
president of medical affairs for Eisenhower
Medical Center and now a 21-year resident.
“This is not a retirement community
where people go to just while away their
remaining years,” Williamson says. “They
expect to be active, to play golf, play tennis,
and swim.” That’s why, he says, EMC’s
volume of hip and knee replacements is
among the highest in California. He also
notes that sports medicine specialists treat
athletes as old as 85.
EMC operates outpatient facilities,
from Palm Springs to La Quinta. “We are
expanding beyond the hospital setting,”
Williamson says. “There’s a shift toward
ensuring the wellness of our community
rather than just treating illness.”
Another new focus for the hospital is
residencies to train internal and family
medicine doctors. Williamson believes the
Coachella Valley is attractive to young
doctors not only because of the beauty of
the area and its access to beaches and big
cities within two hours, but also because
they can be associated with the high caliber
of doctors practicing here.

A PLASTIC SURGEON with practices in

of the Emmy-winning The Doctors, Andrew
Ordon began coming to Palm Springs while
growing up in Long Beach. He has owned a
residence here since 1995 and now lives at
Thunderbird Heights “on the same street as
Bing Crosby’s old place,” he says. “I am into
the nostalgia of old Palm Springs.
“I think we have successfully maintained
the flair and feel of old Palm Springs. You
see that in the architecture, style, the way
restaurants decorate their places, etc.”
Ordon opened the Plastic Surgery
Institute in Rancho Mirage in 2000 when
a building became available that had been
converted from an estate into a Medicareapproved surgery center by another plastic
surgeon. “I will never give it up,” he says.
“We have our own freestanding building,
which you couldn’t have in L.A., with the
capability of doing our surgery here and
keeping patients overnight.”
Ordon also is affiliated with Eisenhower
Medical Center. “I trained in some of the
finest institutions in New York and Los
Angeles, and I can say that Eisenhower
truly is a great medical facility,” he says.
He also likes the desert environment and
lifestyle. “When I’m not working, I can be on
the golf course in five minutes,” he notes.
And he likes how the future is shaping
up. “I am very excited about the University
of California at Riverside School of
Medicine opening,” he says, adding that
EMC has allied with USC’s Keck School of
Medicine. “Hopefully, this is going to lead
to more primary-care physicians being
trained in the desert that will stay.”

DAVID MURPHY moved to the United States
from Europe 30 years ago and enjoyed a long
career selling luxury cars throughout Southern
California before opening Desert European
Motor Cars on eight and a half acres in Rancho
Mirage.
Murphy recognized all the ingredients for
success in the population of wealthy people
here who enjoy driving Bentleys, Rolls-Royces,
Maseratis, Audis, Land Rovers, Porsches, and
other elite and high-performance vehicles.
“This is one of the only places where our
customers feel perfectly safe to drive a luxury
car to Starbucks or the grocery store with the
top down,” he says.
That is why he chose to live here while
maintaining business in Orange County, Los
Angeles, and San Diego.
“We live in a remarkable place that is rich
with captains of industry and celebrities and
very talented people who come from all over
the world to make this place their home,” he
says. “You can’t beat the quality of life.”
Murphy credits the climate of cooperation
in the local business community as a perk and
has found, even through recessions, that his
clientele remains consistently unique, loyal,
and contributory to the overall economy. He’s
enthusiastic about reinvesting in the desert
and soon will begin construction on an Audi
