Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is located off the Southern Highway; a 45
minute car ride, from here. The actual park however
is 6 miles down a dirt road. Here you’ll make a brief
stop at the Mayan Visitors Centre where you can take
advantage of viewing and purchasing local Mayan
crafts from the gift shop and sign the guest book.
From that point you spend the next 15 minutes of
driving deep into the rainforest of the Cockscomb Basin. Upon arrival at the headquarters of
the preserve, you will hear the history of the Belizean Jaguar and the Cockscomb Basin
Wildlife Sanctuary came to be.
You will also have a thorough natural history hike where
you will learn about the native plants, trees and wildlife.
This is followed by a picnic lunch in the rest area, after
which you will get wet! One of the highlights of the tour
is the river tubing. Cool off, have fun and more
opportunities to observe wildlife like the howler
monkeys and tapirs. Sorry, no crocodiles! And if that’s not exciting enough for you,
the next feature is a walk through the jungle to the waterfalls where you get wet again
and start the heart-racing portion of the tour. Following this of your tour, you begin your
relaxing trip back to Placencia just in time for Happy Hour.

Journey to the outback trails, 30 minutes driving along the Southern Highway to the
Kendal River. This adventure ride is ideal for both the experienced and nonexperienced rider. Leaving from the outback stables, you will pass through a citrus
grove before entering into the hills that surround the Southern Region of Belize, the
Maya Mountains. The trail winds itself over pine forest hills with breath taking views.
Look up and you can see the second highest peak in Belize – Victoria’s Peak soaring
into the sky … look the other way and enjoy the stunning view of the country side … or
search for the horizon for the exquisite Caribbean Sea.
The sanctuary is home to over 200 jaguars and often they use the riding trails to walk upon in the still of the night,
hunting down their prey. In the rainy season, you have a chance of coming across their paw prints left clearly outlined in
the path. It is a truly rare experience to encounter one of them as these majestic animals are the masters of stealth and
their very existence is based on seeing but not being seen.

During the late pre-classic period (300 B.C. – 300 A.D.), Cahal Pech became
one of the most important centers in the Belize River Valley region. A
relatively large temple from this phase (structure B-4) has been conserved
and can be seen at the site.
Cahal Pech has a number
of palace groups in the
western section of the
site. Most of the elite
residences have masonry superstructures with vaulted roofs, long
rooms and large benches. The rooms were used for both domestic
and administrative purposes. Access to areas used by the ruling elites
was also extremely limited. Plaza A, for example, can only be
accessed through the central
doorway of structure A-2(an elite
residence and administrative
building), or via two narrow vaulted passageways to the south and west of the
courtyard.
Be sure to visit the museum which hosts an array of pottery and Mayan artifacts.

through the jungle starts the tour while presentations are given on medicinal plants.
When arriving at the cave, you will be educated on Belize’s cave system and the use of
the cave system by the Ancient Mayas. You will then jump in your tubes and float down the river and through the cave
system for approximately an hour and a half. You’ll experience the sights and sounds of the underworld that the ancient

Xunantunich is an ancient Maya archeological site in western Belize located
atop a ridge above the Mopan River, well within sight of our neighboring
country, Guatemala. It is approximately 2 ½ hours away from the resort,
driving the western highway and through the town of San Ignacio, heading
to the village of San Jose Succotz, where we take a hand-cranked ferry over
the Mopan River to the site of
Xunantunich (Maiden of the Rock).
Xunantunich flourished during the
classic period and appears to have
survived the Maya “collapse” to
remain an important population center until around AD 1000. The site has 5 main
plazas, although only 3 plazas are evident to visitors today. A steep, but short
climb to the top is highly recommended. This vantage point provides a
breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding Mopan and Belize River valleys,
as well as Guatemala to the west.
After filling up on your Belizean lunch, we
start heading back down south making a
quick stop to the inland Blue Hole or St.
Herman’s Cave. The Blue Hole is actually
a sinkhole formed by the collapse of an
underground river channel. It is located
just off the Humming Bird Highway, Blue Hole steps lead to a 25 foot
deep pool, for which the park is named. It’s cool, turquoise waters
surrounded by dense forest, overhung with mosses, vines and ferns is
the perfect spot for a cool and relaxing dip. Sign up now.

Caracol or El Caracol is the name given to a large ancient Maya archaeological
site, located in what is now the Cayo District of
Belize. It is situated approximately 25 miles south
of Xunantunich and San Ignacio, at an elevation of
1500 ft. (460 m.) above sea level, in the foothills of
the Maya Mountains. The site was first reported
by a native logger named Rosa Mai, who came
across its remains in 1937 while searching for
mahogany hardwood trees to exploit.
The site was occupied as early as 1200 BCE, but had its greatest period of construction in the
Maya Classic period, with over 40 monuments dated between 485CE to 889CE, which record
the dynastic sequence of the rulers.
Ancient Caracol is one of the largest ancient Maya cities, covering some 65 square miles (168km 2) with an estimated
peak population of about 120,000, or possibly as many as 180,000 people. One monument here records a military
victory over the army of Tikal in 562CE, where Caracol’s Lord Water is shown to have captured and sacrificed Tikal’s
Double Bird. This event is seemingly concurrent with archaeological and epigraphic evidence indicating the beginning of
the Tikal Mid-Classic Hiatus. Get a glimpse of this historic site, sign up now!
