Here on an incredible 183-acre campus the spirit of liberty that caused colonists to declare independence in 1776 is brought to life. The American Village immerses your students in experiences that convey incredible stories of freedom and liberty. They are guided in their experience by a talented staff portraying “people of the past.” Together they take a stand for the principles that have inspired and led Americans in generations since to help “…form a more perfect Union.” We believe the American Village experience is centered on vital elements of an American civic education. It includes content that supports reading, critical thinking, and writing skills. Whether you are teaching reading, social studies, history, civics, or government, or a related subject, I believe you will find the American Village experience uniquely engages your students. Well over half a million students from all over Alabama and the surrounding Southeastern states have been part of this revolutionary experience since the Village opened sixteen years ago. We strive to serve as partners with you in preparing young people for the vital roles of citizens and leaders. We hope they make connections to the people of the past – who in times of uncertainty or fear, took risks and made choices that helped shape our country. We invite you and your educator colleagues to be our guests for the 2016 Teacher Preview Days this summer (see p. 6). The program and luncheon are complimentary but pre-registration is required. This year’s program promises to be the best ever! I also call your attention to the Student Mock Election Convention (July 12-14) on page 14. The first nine hundred students and teachers to register (at no charge) will have a great time getting ready for the Alabama Student Mock Election to be held this Fall. So check it out and sign up today! We hope this catalog for 2016-2017 provides the information you need to plan a classroom visit. Modifications are made in the use of authentic language, use of examples and analogies, use of visual and auditory support, degree of presentation detail, connection to accessible and relevant student background and experience, connection to previous classroom instruction, and in pacing. The program also seeks to evoke a sense of ownership and stewardship of the principles of liberty and selfgovernment.
