Message from Chairs & Leadership
A Heartfelt Thanks to
Our Exceptional People
We are constantly reminded by our patients and supporters, that
our exceptional people make us who we are. Their expert skills
and nurturing attitudes are what make each hospital experience
the best that it can be at a very vulnerable time. Our report this
year focuses on the many exceptional people who work in our
midst, and care for you each and every day.
This past year, several of our surgeons were recognized for
implementing better surgical processes and for mentoring
those who will care for us in the future. We had the pleasure
of welcoming new faces to our team, like Dr. Kunuk Rhee,
Chief of Staff, and saying a fond farewell to others like
Dr. James Gowing, who left an indelible mark on our hospital.
Exceptional and visionary people are always behind bringing
new programs and improving services to our hospital.
Dr. Robert Shenker and Dr. Amy Chesney started the region’s
first and only microvascular Breast Reconstruction program.
Our Emergency Department, in partnership with various
clinical programs and housekeeping, dramatically reduced the
length of stay for patients waiting to be admitted into hospital.
Angelo Loberto
Hospital Board Chair
Patrick Gaskin
Hospital President
and CEO
We celebrated the many contributions of volunteers, like
Marjorie Oldfield, who provided 50 years of dedicated service
to the hospital.
We celebrated exceptional donors to our Hospital, including you –
the residents of Cambridge, North Dumfries and Waterloo Region.
Our Foundation received incredible gifts from families who had
the foresight to leave a legacy to their community in their wills
many years ago. Both levels of municipal government presented
their final payments on pledges to rebuild and grow our hospital.
We thank our exceptional local leaders, who showed confidence
in providing these funds in advance of our groundbreaking.
Later this year, we will begin CMH’s massive transformation.
Our new construction will provide our caregivers with more
space and more advanced medical tools. The new hospital
environment will provide you with a more comfortable place
to stay and to visit. We look forward to keeping you informed
of our progress in the months to come. Thank you for your
confidence in our people and your continued financial support
as we move forward.

In December 2013,
a team led by
orthopaedic
surgeon Dr. Joyce
Daly tested a
new method for
doing a common
surgery more
efficiently. The
“Rapid Test of
Change for Total
Joint Replacement Surgery” was a success, resulting
in five joint surgeries (hips and knees) performed
in a regular 7.5 hour surgical shift. This is incredible
considering that under normal circumstances, three
surgeries can be accommodated during this time range.
In simple terms, this method requires two operating
rooms (OR) to be used exclusively by one surgical team.
When the team finishes a surgery, they go to the second
OR to start the next one. At the same time, housekeeping
cleans the unoccupied OR and gets it prepared for
the next joint replacement surgery. By removing the
downtime in between surgeries, the team is able to do
more. The downside is that two rooms are used, squeezing
other surgical specialties to use a limited set of ORs.
Hospitals are using this technique to optimize use of their
operating room time and hospital resources. Using our
resources wisely is especially important, given the new
funding focus on rewarding high quality and efficiency
in health care. Specific to replacing joints, there is also
an increased demand for these surgeries because our
population is aging and becoming more obese. The more
that can be done with what we have at hand, the better
our system can accommodate our patients in need.

Donations for Tools That Help Us Do
Exceptional Work
New cardiac monitors
Thanks to some generous donors, CMH’s cardiac monitoring system (CMS) was
replaced and upgraded this past winter. The CMS enables staff and physicians to
continue delivery of intensive and emergency care, while also supporting them with
more detailed information of their patients’ vital signs. The new system is much
more precise, can monitor the heart’s electrical cycle and can even check a patient’s
breathing patterns when they are on a ventilator.
Care team innovates with new Pain Pump
An exceptional team from several clinical programs collaborated with a medical
equipment manufacturer, to develop an innovative pump. This new pump helps
safely administer pain medicine by way of the lumbar region of a person’s back.
When medicine is administered through the lumbar, it is called an epidural.
The device is quite different from the IV pump. It has ‘easy to see’ colour coded
stickers and no place to hang IV bags to further enhance patient safety. CMH is
the first facility with a pump and stand system that only administers epidurals
and no other types of medicine.
NIBP Blood pressure monitors
The Non-Invasive Blood Pressure (NIBP)
monitor is an essential medical tool that allows a nurse to make a rapid,
accurate assessment of their patient. While available at our hospital for
several years, there were not enough for every nurse to use, thereby
taking valuable care time away from them. In January 2014, the hospital
purchased an additional 22 monitors; enough for every nurse on every
shift. Through your generous donations, this allows nurses to maintain
their focus on patients and helps manage their patient assignment,
while improving their work life.

Dr. Kunuk Rhee
Meet our new Chief of Staff
In October 2013, Dr. Kunuk Rhee started his role as our new
Chief of Staff and hospitalist. A person who is equally
passionate about helping people, working in a hospital setting
and developing programs, he accepted the position because he
wanted to make a positive impact on the community he serves.
His three-year goal is to build a very strong and organized
physician care and delivery program that stands out in our
region and in the province.
Five things you may not know about Dr. Rhee:
• Preferred sports: swimming and basketball
• Favourite foods: Greek and Italian
• Plays the violin
• Favourite movie: Ten Commandments (the original with
Charleton Heston)
• Has Two Labrador Retrievers: Forrest (Chocolate), after
Forrest Gump and Teddy (Yellow), after a children’s novel

Saying ‘thank you’ to
retiring physician,
Dr. James Gowing
Goodbyes are hard, especially when saying them to one
of Cambridge Memorial Hospital’s exceptional innovators.
In 1974, Dr. James Gowing joined our hospital to work as
a hematologist and oncologist. He leaves us with a strong
legacy in place having founded the Medical Day Clinic;
a clinic that changed the face of cancer care here in Cambridge.
Being born and raised in Preston, it is understandable that
Dr. Gowing has a strong tie with the region. After studying
abroad, he said no to the Mayo Clinic to become the first
oncology resident at McMaster University. Noticing that
many from his hometown traveled to Hamilton for their
cancer care, he decided to move back to Cambridge, where
he truly made his impact.
Always an advocate for patients, he had a passion for
diagnosing very rare diseases. He diagnosed 20 such cases
over his career; his most famous is Wesley Price, who
became known as the ‘Viagra Kid’ by National media. Price’s
pulmonary arterial hypertension was treated with Viagra on
Dr. Gowing’s instructions, becoming the first person whose
symptoms were treated with the drug in North America, and
only the second in the world. Today, it is the standard of care
for this condition.
Although he quit practicing in May 2013, Dr. Gowing did not
slowdown in retirement. He continues to write about rare
diseases, as well as, teach, lecture and travel to visit his family.

Building Hope
Through Breast Reconstruction
Our hospital expansion will bring about many exciting
changes, one of them a large, modern Surgical Suite with
more operating rooms (OR). In one of these ORs, we will
be performing a new procedure – breast reconstruction for
mastectomy patients. This is different from implants as it uses
the patient’s own tissue from their tummy region, creating
a natural looking breast. Some of these cases will even be
performed the same day as their mastectomy, reducing the
need for the patient to go through two operations.
This is a new surgical procedure for the Waterloo Region.
CMH has two highly skilled, specially trained plastic surgeons
capable of doing this operation and have recruited a third to
join them later in the year. While skill is a necessity for all
surgeries, so too are the specialized tools they need to do this
work. With breast reconstruction, the surgeons use a highly
specialized micro-vascular microscope that is used to connect
the tiniest, most delicate blood vessels, ensuring the tissue
survives when it is moved from their abdomen to make a new
breast. The cost of this microscope and other equipment to
perform this complex surgery is more than $1 million. As such,
the CMH Foundation has launched a Breast Reconstruction
campaign to ensure we have the tools to offer this surgery
locally and allow our patients to access specialized care,
closer to their home.

BRA Day:
Raising Awareness for
Breast Reconstruction
In the spring, we shared with our donors a very special
survivor story, from local veterinarian and mother, Amanda
MacDonald, pictured below with her son Thomas. Amanda
spoke very openly about her breast cancer journey and what
it meant to be given renewed hope with reconstruction.
For Amanda and the women who undergo this surgery, it is
a powerful part of the healing process, psychologically and
emotionally. It is hard to imagine that only 15% of eligible
women undergo reconstructive surgery after mastectomy –
especially considering that OHIP funds this procedure. Many
women simply do not think this is something that is offered
to them through public health insurance or it is tremendously
inconvenient for them to access the expertise in another city.
Breast Reconstruction
Awareness (BRA) Day,
and other events led by
our surgical teams aim
to educate women about
their options, with
the ultimate goal of
rekindling hope in
their future.

Our Generous Community
1. We had a great turnout for the East
Indian Walkathon! Over two years, the
mighty East Indian community raised
almost $55,000 for CMH. About a dozen
groups were represented and dignitaries
were on hand for the ribbon-cutting.
1.
2. In 2013, almost 70 leaders from a
number of local and regional cultural
groups attended two Diversity Dinners.
Graciously hosted by the Islamic Centre
and the Portuguese Club, participants
shared tasty traditional fare, fundraising
awards were presented to local groups
and updates were provided by CMH
President and CEO, Patrick Gaskin.
3. The hard-working Cambridge Cares
committee hosted another incredible
fundraiser in April 2013. Funds
were raised for Mental Health and
ICU. Kenny Munshaw provided
entertainment and Scotiabank was
our presenting sponsor once again.
4. Thank you to all who joined us
again at Galt Country Club for a
wonderful day of golf, at our Spring
Golf Classic Tournament! Logikor
was a wonderful presenting
sponsor and we were so fortunate
to have supportive volunteers,
sponsors and players. About
$90,000 towards ER expansion
was raised at our annual event.
5.
Improving length of stay in the Em
ergency
One of our many success stories over
the past year is how we have tackled
our length of stay, which some call ‘wai
t
times,’ in our Emergency Department
(ED). In 2010, it took over 40 hours
for
nine out of ten patients to get admitted
from our ED to an inpatient bed. A lot
of work has gone into this. In 2012-13
,
this was brought down to 25 hours.
In 2013-14, this was brought down
further to 15 hours. This means that
nine out of ten patients needing
hospitalization, are triaged, receive
tests, assessed by a doctor,
admitted and transferred to
a floor within 15 hours or
less. In 2013-14, Waterloo
Wellington was the best
region in Ontario for this
length of stay.

Highlights
RFP issued – Minister Matthews visits
After years of finalizing every last detail for the new hospital
build, a request for proposals was issued in November 2013
to five pre-qualified builders who can take on a project of this
size. The RFP closed in April 2014, with a sign unveiling and
visit from Minister of Health, Deb Matthews.
Mock-ups and Reality Cave
Once the hospital is built, it will be very hard to change. This
is why a lot of attention went into testing new design concepts
by actually building the rooms to scale using plywood and
rendering it using a sophisticated 3D, virtual reality simulator.
The latter actually allowed architects, staff and project leads to
walk through and experience the space it was intended.

50 Years of Service
We are privileged to have people like Marjorie Oldfield,
a volunteer that has been actively volunteering with us for
50 years. Marjorie started volunteering after the principal
of Preston High School asked her if she would like to help
out. Since all of her children had started school, and she had
free time she decided to try it out. Having volunteered at the
hospital for so long, Marjorie has had a few different jobs and
has seen a lot of changes over the course of working at the
hospital. For 50 years Marjorie Oldfield has shown dedication
and persistence, we are more than grateful to have her
volunteer with us for this long and appreciate everything
she has done for CMH.
Legacy Giving
Choosing to leave a gift from the heart brings meaning,
dignity and purpose to a life well lived. Your gift is your
opportunity to participate in the charitable and community
work most meaningful to you, in a way that allows these
important causes to be well supported now and into the future.
These individuals wanted to ensure that the Cambridge
Memorial Hospital would always be able to provide
exceptional healthcare by exceptional people:
• Barbara K. Buchner
• Avril L. O’Brien
If your future plans include a donation to the hospital, we
would love to know about your intentions. Nothing is more
meaningful than the opportunity to thank you and celebrate
your generosity during your lifetime.
• Robert A. Cowan
• Carrie Peck
• Veronica McCarthy
• Leonore Ridsdale

Letter from the Foundation
Dear Friend of CMH
2013-14 Foundation Board
Our primary objective is to provide exceptional care to you and your family in a time
of need. Our caregivers are always ready, but what makes their jobs a lot easier is to
have the best and most up-to-date equipment at hand. Some equipment is vital for
diagnosis or treatment, while other pieces are to assist with your comfort and safety.
Ken Zelazny – Chair
Mike Takacs – Vice Chair
Our new expansion will be what you hear about most in the coming years, and we
will require a massive list of medical equipment to fill it. Although 90% of the capital
building is funded by the government, 100% of equipment purchases are funded
through community donations. You, our donors, are really the ones who will ensure
the most vital pieces of our project are complete.
Jane Adams – Treasurer
Barry Kennedy – Secretary
Susan Brown – Past Chair
Robert Cunningham
Technological equipment changes so rapidly these days that many pieces only have a
5 year lifespan – think of your cell phone or your computer… pieces like CT, ECG and
surgical monitors require constant replacement. The same is true for specialized beds,
wheelchairs and scopes. Any item with moving parts wear out from constant use.

In 2013 you helped us update our Surgical Suite. Thank you for being so generous.
This year we are focusing on all the equipment in the hospital, including Surgery,
ER, Diagnostic Imaging and Breast Reconstruction.

I CCAIR
Our Values in Action
In 2013, we started a recognition program to celebrate staff,
physicians and volunteers who demonstrate our hospital’s
values of Caring, Collaboration, Accountability, Innovation and
Respect. Tagged as ‘I CCAIR’, the program has recognized dozens
of individuals and teams since its inception. Below is one of the many
nominations we received to honour those who CCAIR.
December 12 was very cold. The news reported that with the wind chill
factor, it was a frigid -23 Celsius. That morning, Lee-Ane was on her way into
the hospital from CMH’s back parking lot. As she walked toward the entrance,
she heard something – or was it someone? Noise carries in the back of the
hospital. It can be difficult to hear where sound is coming from. Instead of
shrugging her shoulders and going inside, she stopped and decided to listen
more carefully. She was certain she heard someone crying for help. She decided
to investigate more carefully. Lee-Ane walked towards a storage area in the back
of the hospital. The calls and moans became louder with every step. Lee-Ane
tentatively opened the lockers and in one of them, she found a man inside –
freezing cold, in pain and in obvious distress. Lee-Ane jumped into action by
getting immediate help. Without Lee-Ane’s caring, respect and accountability,
I dare think what would have happened to this dear soul.
