The acquisition of star rider Valentino Rossi in 2004 reinvigorated Yamaha, leading to their first Rider and Team Championships since 1992, so they set their sights on capturing the Manufacturers’ title as well. Entering its 4th year of MotoGP, the YZR-M1 was improved for 2005 and featured a 4-stroke inline 4-cylinder 990cc engine that offered greater top speed and fuel efficiency. The chain-driven cam shaft was changed to a gear-driven type to limit the width increase caused by the engine’s greater bore. A shortened and repositioned clutch as well as a centrally-mounted cam-driven gear contributed to a compact layout. “Mass concentration” improvements such as a fuel tank with lower center of gravity and the rear shock attached to the crankcase provided optimum balance for better handling and stability. A sleeveless head pipe prevented interference of the air duct and radiator to enhance the air box’s efficiency while the cross member above the swing arm pivot was removed. These changes greatly improved the frame’s balance and shock absorbing capability. Furthermore, the refined torque control system was programmed to assist the rider unobtrusively. Valentino Rossi and Colin Edwards were the riders at the helm of this machine, with Rossi winning 11 of 17 races to dominate the season. Edwards consistently claimed points as well, allowing Yamaha to take the triple crown of Rider, Team, and Manufacturer Championships. The Porsche works team dominated this category, winning consecutive championships in the 1976 and 1977 seasons. For the 1978 season, Porsche left the World Championship for Makes to the many 935 Turbos raced by private teams and created the 935/78 Turbo with the goal of claiming the Le Mans 24 Hours. The long, ground-hugging body of the car had distinctive features such as a slanted front nose and an extended tail section. In addition to a displacement increase from 2.8 to 3.2 liters, the air-cooled twin-turbo engine featured four valves per cylinder and Porsche’s first liquid-cooled cylinder heads, enabling it to produce a massive 850hp. The team first entered the 935/78 Turbo at the World Championships for Makes Round 4, the 6 Hours of Silverstone, only intending to test the car for the upcoming Le Mans 24 Hours, but drivers Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass drove it to an impressive debut win. At the 1978 Le Mans 24 Hours, the 935/78 Turbo, driven by Rolf Stommelen and Manfred Schurti, qualified in a sensational 3rd place behind the Group 6 Porsche 936/78 and Renault Alpine A443 Turbo, but frequent pit stops to refuel and other mechanical problems resulted in an 8th place finish overall. The 76mm gun was an effective anti-tank weapon until 1943, when its firepower was no longer enough to counter the new German tanks. In the latter half of 1943, replacing the SU-76 was the SU-85, which was based on the T-34’s hull and was armed with an 85mm gun. It did not feature a turret like other tanks and was very effective in the anti-tank role. The T-34-85 was deployed shortly after, but with armor thickness ever increasing demand grew for a more powerful tank destroyer. In 1944, the SU-85 was fitted with a 100mm gun and renamed the SU-100. Aside from the gun, the two looked identical but the SU-100 was distinguished by its commander’s cupola. Although the 100mm gun did not have the same armor-piercing power as the German 75mm or British 17 pdr guns, its shell was two times heavier than the 75mm and its destructive power easily knocked out German tanks. Also, its simple design proved advantageous as labor and construction costs were reduced 20%. However its turret-less design limited the gun’s attack range and this weakness manifested itself on sloped terrain and in narrow urban areas. Ambush tactics, including hiding among buildings and trees, were developed accordingly and the SU-100 performed well in both anti-tank combat and as fire support for infantry. The SU-100 remained in Russian service until the 1970s and also served in Polish, East German, Czechoslovakian, Romanian, Hungarian, Egyptian, and Iraqi armies. About the Model -This is a limited edition 1/25 scale plastic assembly kit. -New parts to depict wooden logs have been especially included for this re-release. -Moveable torsion bar suspension features same construction as seen on the actual tank. -Each hatch can be open and closed. -Realistic link-type assembly tracks included. Sd.Kfz. 251/1 Ausf.D “Stuka Zu Fuss” Availability: April'10 Quantity Per Carton: 36 Image shows box art Following the successful July 2009 release of the Mtl.SPW. Sd.Kfz. 251/1 Ausf.D (Item 32654), Tamiya is proud to release a must have for all 1/48 scale enthusiasts, the exceptional rocket launching Mtl.SPW. Sd.Kfz. 251/1 Ausf.D “Stuka Zu Fuss.” About the Vehicle The German Army Weapons Agency began research into rocket technology in 1931. During the development of the V-2 rocket, which became the basis for future strategic missiles, the Nebelwerfer became first rocket to enter the battlefield. In 1941, production of wingless 15cm rockets began, followed by larger 28/32cm rockets. At the tail of these rockets were many thrusters which kept them on a stable course. Compared with the 8.2cm winged M8 rockets from the Russian Katyusha, the German rockets were of a far superior design. The first such rockets deployed to the frontlines were the NbW 41 28/32cm rockets. There were two types of this rocket, a 28cm type which was armed with either a 50kg or 36kg high explosive (HE) warhead and had a 750-1,925m range, and a 32cm rocket which was armed with 45 liters of incendiary mixture and a 770-2,200m range. These rockets did not require launchers but instead could be fired from their simple launch frames. The German army immediately decided to load (reusable sWG 40 and disposable sWG 41) launch frames made of metal and wood respectively, onto the Hanomag half-track and deploy Coming Soon! The Hanomag could be equipped with a total of five 28cm HE and one 32cm incendiary rockets with their launch frames. These vehicles were designated Sd.Kfz.251/1 Nebelwerfer (Ausf.A-D) but on the frontlines they were called “Stuka zu Fuss” or the “Ground Stuka” a reference to the Luftwaffe’s Stuka dive-bomber, due to their great mobility, devastating noise, and destructive power. The new general-purpose vehicle was to be reliable, have excellent off-road mobility, and have the versatility to perform a variety of roles. Three companies presented proposals and created prototypes, and after exhaustive comparative tests, the vehicle which exceeded all performance requirements while also being the lightest was chosen as the winner. Featuring an aluminum body on a strong steel frame, it is equipped with a 4-wheel independent suspension, full-time 4WD system, and a 150hp V8 diesel engine which enables a top speed of 105 km/h. Depending on the body type and fitted equipment, it can also perform a wide range of roles including cargo/troop transport, ambulance, and armament carrier. Like the different variants, the “armament carrier” has a large rear deck area and distinguishing metal roof and doors and could be seen armed with either a Mk.19 grenade launcher or an M-60 machine gun. U.S. military units were issued with these vehicles from 1985, and they first saw action in Panama in 1989. Since the 1991 Gulf War, they have supported the logistical needs of U.S. forces in all fields of operations. Coming Soon! FEBRUARY 2010 32568 1/48 German Tank Destroyer Marder III M Availability: April'10 Quantity Per Carton: 36 units Page 14 of 63 Image shows prototype During WWII, Germany produced many open-topped tank destroyers using the chassis of obsolete tanks. Among these was the Marder III series, which was based on the 38(t) tank made by Czech company CKD (later BMM) and developed to counter Russian T-34 and KV-1 tanks. Initial variants were armed with the PaK 36(r), a modified Russian 7.62cm anti-tank gun, and served well in Russia and North Africa. The German military then ordered BMM to develop a tank destroyer based on the 38(t) tank that would be armed with the new PaK 40/3 7.5cm gun, resulting in the Marder III Ausf.H in autumn of 1942. The series then culminated in the Ausf.M, which differed from the earlier Ausf.H by having its engine moved to the center (“Mitte” in German, hence the M designation) and its fighting compartment relocated to the rear. This design not only improved ease of production and operation, but it also allowed the lower profile fighting compartment to be surrounded by armor plates, thereby enhancing crew protection. The PaK 40/3 could fire either armorpiercing or high-explosive shells, and 27 rounds were carried. Between May 1943 and May 1944, a total of 942 Ausf.M were produced and they were the mainstay of tank destroyer units on all fronts. Late-production versions built from the end of 1943 featured a welded steel driver’s hood made rather than cast metal one, as well as different side engine intake cover and exhaust layouts. About the Model -This is a 1/48 scale plastic assembly kit of the German Tank Destroyer Marder III M. -The Marder’s combat compartment has been recreated in superb detail. -Display the model on its own or together with other 1/48 scale vehicles to create impressive dioramas. The 75-ton vehicle, called the Jagdtiger, was based on a redesigned King Tiger chassis and used the same engine and drivetrain as that tank. Its 12.8cm Pak 44 L/55 gun, taken from the Maus super heavy tank, was mounted in a large superstructure with armor up to 250mm thick. Over 80 were produced between February 1944 and the end of WWII, but those built from November 1944 had equipment such as the jack removed, while those built from December featured six spare track link racks on each side of the superstructure. They were issued to the 653rd and 512th Heavy Anti-Tank Battalions (s.Pz.Jg.Abt), with the latter unit, formed in February 1945, noteworthy for its famous company commanders: Lt. Otto Carius and Lt. Albert Ernst. Carius was a veteran s.Pz.Abt. 502 Tiger tank platoon commander as well as one of Germany’s top tank aces with 150 Russian tanks destroyed. His unit was sent to the Ruhr region in western Germany, where he used his Jagdtiger to great effect against the advancing Allied forces, even knocking out tanks that were hidden behind buildings. Mechanical problems and the lack of crew training limited the Jagdtigers’ effectiveness, but its unrivalled firepower and armor protection continued to threaten Allied tanks until the end of the war. The Germans made fierce attacks by using “blitzkrieg” tactics which had been polished on the basis of experience in their French campaign, and their soldiers worked with the prompt precision of machinery. The Germans carried out pincer operations with their panzer units as the main body and set a huge iron ring against the Russians. The collapse of their communication system, confusion of their command chain and loss of air superiority increased damage to the Russian forces. There were two German weapons which gave the most indelible impression on Russian soldiers. One of them was the JU-87 Stuka which had already proved itself to be an effective dive bomber in the French campaign. Planes of this type saturated Russian targets while diving steeply and skimming over the ground with a whirr that sounded like a “shriek from hell”. The other was the Strumgeschütz III which destroyed Russian tochkas one after another to support infantry units. The Russians were not without tanks similar in use to the German Sturmgeschütz. They had the KV-2 heavy tank which was nicknamed “Gigant” by German infantrymen. However, because this tank was too heavy to make quick movements and had a high silhouette, it could not steal near enemy positions to destroy them. In addition, their numbers were so small that they could not concentrate their powerful 152mm gun fire sufficiently on the target. After checking the German advance in front of Moscow, the Russians formed early in 1942 a plan for the mass production of tanks and guns for counter-offensive. Of all tanks to be produced under the plan, about 70% were T-34 mediums and the remaining 30% consisted of KV-I heavy tanks and light tanks. FEBRUARY 2010 Page 22 of 63 89797 1/35 SU-85 Russian Tank Destroyer continued (76.2mm) guns, “medium caliber” (85-100) guns, and “large caliber” (122mm) guns. These weapons were to be immediately sent to the battlefield in large quantities. Judging from this plan, the Russians must have already expected in those days to mount the 122mm, 100mm, or 85mm gun on the chassis of the T-34 tank. As they knew the power of the German Sturmgeschütz by reports from the front, the Russians naturally realized their own idea of assault guns. The Soviet Union’s first assault gun to be produced was a self-propelled gun with the 122mm howitzer called “SU-122”. The “SU” (or “Cy” in Russian letters) is an abbreviation for Russian “Samokhoknaya Ustanovka” which means “self-propelled gun”. The Russians called such turretless tanks by the general name of self-propelled gun. The SU-122 self-propelled gun was designed by engineer E.W.Silniszczikov with the assistance of F.F.Pietrov, the king of Russian gun designers, who had designed the 122mm gun. This was an excellent howitzer and called “M-30S” by the Russians. It had a range of 11,800m, muzzle velocity of 515m/sec and a rate of fire of 5 or 6 rounds/min. The SU-122 self-propelled gun was similar in shape to the German Sturmgeschütz III armed with the short-barreled 75mm gun. With projecting bulky recoil mechanism, the SU-122 did not look pleasing at all. The final production model however, had the forceful Russian style with polished semi-spherical recoil mechanism and shields employed instead of the previous ungainly ones. The SU-122 self-propelled gun first saw action in the Battle of Kursk in the summer of 1943. SU-122s, then forming a part of Russian artillery units, took part in the recapture of Orel to the north of Kursk and in the subsequent pursuit actions. Meanwhile, in the kombinat of tank production plants called “Tank-grad”, near the Ural Mountains, engineers led by L.S.Troyanov and S.N.Machonia were designing a new selfpropelled gun which was to mount a long-barreled (51.5 calibers long) 85mm gun instead of the 122mm howitzer. The 85mm gun was an anti-tank weapon remodeled from the antiaircraft gun D-5 designed by Pietrov in 1939. The remodeling was made by Pietrov himself and the gun was named “D-5S-85A”. It is very interesting to note that the new self-propelled gun named “SU-85” used the same logic as the German heavy tank Tiger VI by mounting a remodeled version of anti-aircraft gun. That is, the German Tiger also carried a tank gun remodeled from the 88mm antiaircraft gun, the last trump card that the Germans used against Russian heavy tanks. With 9.02kg armor-piercing rounds, the D-5S-85A had a muzzle velocity of 792m/sec and was powerful enough to penetrate 100mm of vertical armor plate at a distance of 1,000m. It had a field of fire of 20 degrees in azimuth and from minus 5 degrees to plus 25 degrees in elevation. The rate of fire is said to have been 8 to 10 rounds/min. The crew consisted of 4 men. The commander was in the cupola on the front right and could see outside through Coming Soon! FEBRUARY 2010 Page 23 of 63 89797 1/35 SU-85 Russian Tank Destroyer continued the rotating periscope and vision slits. The cupola was later replaced by a hatch type with cylindrical vision holes that was seen on T-34/76 tanks in 1943 and later. The gunner was at the left of the gun and the loader was behind the commander. The driver was hemmed in by 85mm ammunition and sat in the forward left position as before. Thus, the SU-85 self-propelled gun was a powerful anti-tank weapon worthy of being called tank destroyer, of Jagdpanzer in German, rather than self-propelled gun. The Russian masterpiece self-propelled gun SU-85 was not in time for the decisive battle near Kursk. It first saw service in the pursuit action in December 1943 after the liberation of Kiev and confronted the German medium tank Panther and heavy tank Tiger. The Russians incorporated 21 vehicles of this type into a self-propelled artillery battalion under direct control of the corps and 31 into a self-propelled artillery regiment under direct control of the tank army, so that the commanders could use them at their will. In mid 1944, the SU-85 gave way to the SU-100 self-propelled gun, the last model in the SU series, which carried the 100mm gun on the T-34 chassis. After that, the SU-85 selfpropelled gun continued in service as part of tank battalions. FEBRUARY 2010 Page 24 of 63 89798 1/35 Russian Tank Destroyer SU-122 w/Weathering Master Set EX Availability: April'10 PO RT Quantity Per Carton: 36 units ON LY The Soviet Army was influenced by the German development and adoption of the ‘assault gun.’ This type of vehicle entered German service in 1940 in time for the Western Front campaign. By early 1940 the Soviets already had what they called an ‘artillery tank,’ the KV-2 armed with a 152mm L/20 howitzer in a massive box-like turret with all-round traverse. It had many limitations, however, which included a high silhouette, an inability to fire on the move, traversing limitations of the turret if the tank was on an incline, and a dramatic increase of weight compared with the ordinary KV-1 tank. The unsatisfactory nature of the KV-2 became evident in the opening stages of the German invasion of Russia in June 1941, when the KV-2s were quickly overwhelmed by the German armor. The Soviets began to re-arm to meet the German armor on more equal terms. The famous T-34 was the most notable new vehicle and it rendered all German tanks then in service virtually obsolete. Self-propelled guns like the German ‘assault guns’ were developed. One of the first was the SU-76, based on the chassis of the T170 light tank. This appeared in 1942 and was intended initially as a tank destroyer; it proved to be too small and lightly armored and was subsequently used as an infantry support weapon. Plans were put forward to mount a 122mm howitzer on the chassis and running gear of the T-34 to provide a replacement for the KV-2. A prototype was built in mid 1942. Stalin was greatly impressed and ordered immediate mass production. By January 1943 the first regiment was equipped with the newly designated SU-122. Coming Soon! FEBRUARY 2010 Page 25 of 63 The new vehicle utilized an adapted M1938 122mm field gun howitzer mounted centrally on the front end of the T-34 hull. The turret was dispensed with and replaced by a low fixed super structure. There was very limited traverse for the heavy weapon. The new superstructure took up all the space forward of the engine deck, and was distinguished by a well shaped front and a massive mantlet. A cupola for the vehicle commander was situated to the left front. The chassis used was the current 1942 T-34. A horn periscope and a radio were command aids on the SU-122. The frontal armor was up to 100mm thick and there was a crew of four. As the SU-122 was available for supporting infantry, it was decided that the SU-122 would provide fire support for the tank divisions. Platoons of three SU-122s would be attached to tank companies or battalions. There was thus some divergence from original German ideas, for the SU-122 often became a substitute for a tank. In February 1943 production of the SU-122 ended in favor of the JSU-152, a similar vehicle based on the chassis of the KV or JS series tanks. It also had a 152mm gun. Special Addition -This Event-Only Item comes with an especially selected Weathering Master Set which features Red Earth, Soot, and Sand colors for Russian tanks, to allow you to apply a realistic finish to your model. The Thunderbirds, established in 1953, is named after a mythological bird found in Native American legends in the southwest region of the United States. For over half a century, they have served as ambassadors for the U.S. Air Force, promoting international goodwill at air shows throughout the U.S. and in over 60 countries around the world, and have flown several different aircraft during their distinguished history. The team began their relationship with the F-16 Fighting Falcon in 1983 by exchanging their T-38A Talon jet trainers for the F-16A. In 1992, these were traded in for the current F-16C Block 32 aircraft, which feature improved radar, cockpit avionics, and an enlarged tail fairing for ECM equipment. 2009 will see the Thunderbirds upgrade again to the U.S. Air Force’s latest F16, the Block 52, which is equipped with a more powerful Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-229 engine. Apart from the removal of radar, the replacement of the 20mm Vulcan cannon with a smoke generating system, and other minor changes, the Thunderbirds aircraft are identical to those flown by combat units, and can be returned to full combat ready condition in under 72 hours if necessary. Giving over 70 performances per year in a season that lasts from March to November, the Thunderbirds will surely continue to dazzle audiences with their aerobatic repertoire for many years to come.
