A drive around town shows Durham’s not just polishing her sales pitch. Downtown, young professionals, families with children and retirees enjoy loft living above shops and restaurants in historic buildings. 8 “Loft living offers a very exciting lifestyle, especially with the number of events Opelika Main Street puts together for downtown,” she says. The city has invested more than $18 million downtown, creating a streetscape harking back to an earlier time and enhancing building facades. Opelika Main Street focuses on downtown revitalization, and part of that revitalization is the sponsorship of a variety of events, including the biannual “On the Tracks,” a food and wine happening. On First Fridays, downtown businesses are open late, and residents can find fresh, local produce at a Farmers Market on Courthouse Square during the summer months. During the holiday season, Opelika Main Street stages Christmas in a Railroad Town. “We’ve also got a very nice historic district, definitely a close-knit community,” Durham says. “It’s the kind of community where your house expands beyond your home into the neighborhood, and the city’s Historic Preservation Commission does a great job of making sure the homes remain true to their time period.” The district, north of Opelika’s downtown area, is home to the annual Victorian Front Porch Tour, a journey into the 1890s. The 10 blocks between North Eighth Street and Second Avenue are transformed as front porches become the settings for Christmasthemed scenes. Opelika has been named one of the nation’s top golf destinations year after to year, thanks to the Grand National golf course hugging the edge of Lake Saugahatchee in Opelika’s northwest section. Considered the jewel of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, the course is also home to National Village, a golf community with Craftsman-style homes and weekend retreat cottages. “Really, Opelika has homes at every price point and for every family style,” Durham says. “There is plenty of space for everyone, and houses still have great values and are affordable.” Durham says newcomers can buy a comfortable home for under $100,000, or a showplace for as much as $700,000. “There is a lot of construction on all sides, in the heart of town and close to the interstate that caters to the growth of the automotive industry in the area.” Real estate in Opelika and Lee County has stabilized, with homes in the area never seeing the precipitous drops in value many other cities saw. Good values, low interest rates, Opelika’s low property tax rates and new businesses have meant a surge in home buyers in the area, Durham says. In fact, in February 2012 the National Association of Realtors reported that Lee County residential sales had been improving for eight consecutive months compared to the same months from the previous year. Sales of existing single-family homes accounted for more than 50 percent of total sales. HILYER & ASSOCIATES JEFFERY A. As part of the All Pro Dad program, every father stands up and explains what his child has done recently to make him proud. “That’s a very positive thing first thing in morning. Your father’s getting up and telling all your fellow schoolmates he’s proud of you,” says Steve Carson, director of alternative education and student services, who was tapped to implement the program in the city’s K-5 schools. Opelika’s All Pro Dad is a chapter of the All Pro Dad fatherhood program of Family First, a national nonprofit based in Tampa, Fla. The national program was launched in 1997 with the help of Tony Dungy, former head coach of the 2006 Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts. w w w . o p e l i k a . c o m Some 40,000 fathers and children in the U.S. and nine foreign countries now participate in All Pro Dad, which came to Opelika just this year. Carson describes the program as a resounding success. 12 “It’s turned out even better than we were expecting,” he says. “We were apprehensive at first because we were afraid some kids would feel left out, but that hasn’t been the case.” As many as a hundred fathers have turned out at Morris Avenue Intermediate, and 90 fathers have showed up for breakfast at Jeter Primary. Mothers are encouraging fathers to attend, and when a father is not available, a big brother or an older cousin fills in. “We always have mothers at school,” Carson says. “This creates participation among fathers.” All Pro Dad is built on a football theme, with prepared programs downloaded every month from the Internet featuring more than 50 NFL players, coaches and alumni who speak out on the importance of being a good father. The inexpensive curriculum is downloaded from allpro.com. “They discuss a wide range of family topics,” Carson says. “They talk about spending time together, and creating memories.” Each program includes a video clip about a particular character trait, perhaps courage, respect, or loyalty. Each school’s captain and co-captain get the script ahead of time to lead the sessions, and they make sure fliers go home to remind fathers before each breakfast meeting. Dads are required to preregister so the school cafeterias will have enough sausage biscuits. “Even the principals and teachers are thrilled about the program’s success,” Carson says. “Our first groups started out in small activity rooms, but had to be moved to the cafeterias, and each month the numbers are growing. I haven’t heard any negative comments at all.” o E d u c a t i o n 13 Opelika’s Downtown Revitalization N ot too many years ago, downtown Opelika rolled up the sidewalks at 5 p.m. Today the area is a vibrant dining and entertainment hub that draws from a wide area, with area residents often waiting in long lines to get seats in a diversity of restaurants with growing reputations. What happened? “We’ve got one million square feet of retail space and plenty of parking. How green is it to develop what’s already there?” asks John Marsh, the iconoclastic young developer who spearheaded the transformation. buildings and began renovating them, one by one. The old Opelika Drug Store on South Railroad, for example, was a shell with dirt floors. Marsh renovated the space using materials from historic properties and lavished loving attention on every detail. That building is now home to the Irish Bred Pub, where there are two-hour waits most Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Within eight months of opening, the dining room space had to be doubled. w w w . o p e l i k a . c o m For more than five years, Marsh researched the ingredients that make a downtown vital. He says he identified food, entertainment, art and specialty shops as the magic components. 14 “That’s what works and that is what downtown Opelika is going to be,” said Marsh. “I think nobody else would take the risk, because it was a huge undertaking. I brought to the table construction ability, the willingness to take a risk and financial and business literacy.” The city had already invested in an attractive streetscape, but when Marsh looked at Opelika’s downtown he saw many of the buildings were vacant and small shops and restaurants struggled. Yet he couldn’t get a lot of people to buy into his vision of a thriving entertainment district. Early on, Marsh thought if he built beautifully finished properties, tenants would automatically come. That didn’t happen. That’s when he approached long-time restaurateurs Joe Garofalo and Paul Marmol, proprietors of 10 other restaurants in Georgia. Undaunted, over time Marsh bought 18 dilapidated commercial “I knew they knew how to run restaurants,” he says. “But Irish Bred Pub would never have come if I hadn’t done the build-out myself. I had to sell the idea to them, and it had to make business sense.” The restaurant’s opening was a game-changer, Marsh says. Downtown Opelika already boasted several well-regarded restaurants, including Jimmy’s and Café 123, but as word about Irish Bred Pub started spreading, awareness of the entire Opelika downtown area as a dining-out destination soared. “This is where grown folks go if they don’t want that student environment,” Marsh says. “It’s not my property, but I helped,” said Marsh. “I’m not battling anyone else, because this is synergistic. If you put all your eggs in one basket, you have to watch the basket.” The opening of Irish Bred Pub was followed by the debut of Ma Fia’s in another Marsh property. Rick Yockachonis, former chef at the Five Star Plantation in Kellington, Ala., opened the restaurant, where it’s all about the food. The pasta and bread are made on premises. The restaurant also boasts a 2,000-bottle wine selection and handcrafted beers. Coming soon is The Overall Company, which Marsh says will offer specialty coffees, “amazing” cheeses, a bakery and gourmet popsicles. The icy treats will be created using a gourmet popsicle machine imported from Brazil that will turn out such intriguing flavors as strawberry balsamic with cracked black pepper. There’ll also be fresh fruit pops for the kids. Jefferson’s, which offers an inexpensive, eclectic menu of burgers, wings and oysters, opened on Railroad Avenue in late March. The chain, based “It’ll be like a coffee shop in New York City or Chicago, serving the best coffee east of the Mississippi and south of Manhattan,” said Marsh. D i n i n g “If you have incredible food and service, they will come,” said Marsh. “And we’re not competing with Auburn, we’re completing the restaurant scene. Our cities are connected, so we can’t move.” & in Jacksonville, Ala., has 14 restaurants in Alabama and elsewhere. S h o p p i n g He’s referring to residents of Auburn, Opelika’s sister city and home to Auburn University. Auburn has about the same population as Opelika, but four times as many restaurants, Marsh notes. Now, Auburn residents are considering Opelika when they plan an evening out. 15 Owners are Laura and Jay Pritchard and Ty and Alli Maloney, who studied the concept for two years. The operation will be located in the home of Marsh’s former shop, Historic Possibilities, where he sold architectural components salvaged from historic buildings in the area. The coffee shop will include outdoor rooftop dining with a fireplace. The 1860s-era building was once home to the Opelika Overall Company, and Marsh is incorporating the same kinds of salvaged architectural details in this building as in his other properties. For example, all the wood flooring comes from an 1800s-era structure in Albany, Ga. “It’s about the food, but it’s also about the buildings,” said Marsh. “You feel different in a historic building, and Opelika was really the Wild West. There are a lot of stories here.” Marsh got his start in historic renovation by working—paycheck to paycheck—on his own home, an old Victorian in a run-down neighborhood near downtown. Then he started buying nearby homes and renovating them, until he had 46 properties. Revitalizing Opelika’s downtown seemed like the natural next step. In the future, Marsh wants to develop an entire arts community in the old Sikes Feed & Seed. He hopes to attract sculptors, painters, musicians and glassblowers. He plans to build a 400seat restaurant serving artisan foods. w w w . o p e l i k a . c o m Marsh’s company, J. Marsh Developers, has avoided taking on investors for downtown redevelopment because Marsh says he doesn’t want to lose control. And his interests aren’t limited to construction. In fact, he says he runs eight companies out of his downtown office, handling building, financing and marketing for the restaurants that open in his properties. 16 “If the money works, everything else works,” Marsh says. “I help make sure the restaurants don’t fail, because you’re only taking a risk in the restaurant business if you don’t know what you’re doing.” Marsh is motivated by more than money. He says his real drive is the desire to make a difference for his children’s children, and building a vital downtown Opelika is part of that dream. “The synergy is finally there,” Marsh says. “Downtown will continue to grow.” o Just What The Doctor Ordered! 512 2nd Avenue Opelika 36801 • Free Delivery • All Insurances Accepted • See Our Gift Shop (334) 749-3426 www.bubbasonline.com Health & Safety Quick Contacts Emergency : 911 Opelika Police Department (334) 705-5200 501 S. Today, as East Alabama Medical Center, the local hospital serves nearly 15,000 patients a year as inpatients and nearly 45,000 through the bustling emergency room. 20 More than 80,000 Lee County residents also made outpatient visits to the main hospital facility for everything from breast cancer screening and mammograms to chemotherapy and kidney dialysis. In this anniversary year, EAMC has plenty to celebrate. The hospital opened in 1952 with just 81 beds, replacing the 25-bed Opelika Hospital at the corner of Ninth Street and Third Avenue. Today, the modern eight-story facility on Pepperell Parkway in Opelika boasts 340 beds, an enviable list of affiliated physicians and inclusion on a surprising number of “best” lists. In the old days, many Lee County residents also got their medical care at the college dispensary, located on the campus of what is now Auburn University. Today, the tables are turned. EAMC handles healthcare for the university, with some 40,000 students and faculty visiting the Auburn University Medical Clinic, headed by Dr. Fred Kam, every year. The clinic offers physician care, a nursing staff, a full lab, X-ray facilities and even a massage therapist. Today, EAMC is a regional state-of-the-art healthcare facility serving five counties in East Alabama, but the going has sometimes been rough. Those associated with the hospital give credit to EAMC president and CEO Terry Andrus, named to the post in 1984, for navigating the shoals. Andrus had worked as EAMC’s chief operating officer since 1983. In 1999, EAMC opened Camellia Place, an assisted and retirement living facility, at the hospital’s Auburn Medical Park, located on a 37-acre tract of land in Auburn. In 2000, the state’s first freestanding inpatient hospice facility, Bethany House, opened at the park. HealthPlus Fitness Center opened on the same campus just a short time afterwards. EAMC continued to add services, including AIDS Outreach (now Unity Wellness Center) and a forensic toxicology lab in 2003. That year the hospital also added the Oak Park Retirement Living and Nursing Home to its stable of high-quality retirement communities. In 2005, a Wound Treatment Center opened its doors, followed by a Prenatal Clinic the next year. w w w . o p e l i k a . c o m After being named again to Fortune’s list of “Best Places to Work” in 2002, the hospital was informed public-sector agencies were no longer eligible for inclusion, but there are lots of reasons employees might argue that decision. For one thing, EAMC’s Cornerstone Society, an employee assistance program, has built five Habitat for Humanity homes for employees. And employees participate in at least one international mission trip a year. Five teams of employees worked on the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina. 22 Through all the expansion, EAMC has managed to stay in the black, with total expenses topping $305 million, but total revenue exceeding $318 million for the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 2011. The hospital’s mission is to offer high-quality, compassionate healthcare, and its vision is to be a national leader in quality, cost and service. East Alabama Medical Center seems to be well on the way to achieving that goal. o H e a l t h & S a f e t y 23 Entertainment & Arts Quick Facts Entertainment East Alabama Arts Association celebrated its 25th anniversary with the 20112012 Performance Series. Now, the stories of their lives on American soil are part of one of the most popular exhibits at the Museum of East Alabama, located in the old Clement Hotel in downtown Opelika. “Their life here was pretty good compared to the lives of American POWs,” says Glenn Buxton, the museum’s director since 2005. “They had their own theater, their own orchestra, even their own newspaper.” The prisoners worked on building projects around town and created cigarette holders and paintings that are now on display. The long-abandoned camp, located in Opelika’s oldest industrial park, once stretched along what is now I-85. Buxton says visitors to the museum have increased dramatically as the museum has undergone several phases of renovation, commencing in late 2009. The museum reopened in July 2010 after the first phase was completed, with a second phase completed in October 2011. “We’re still not finished,” Buxton says. “We’ve probably got another two years of work to go.” And there are plenty of exhibits not yet on display, he notes. They include a 1920s-era barbershop as well as a beauty shop from roughly the same time. “We have a hair curler that dates back to the mid-1920s, and it looks like something out of a Frankenstein movie,” Buxton says. Exhibits memorializing the Creek Indians, who once populated the area, are also a draw, Buxton says. Especially impressive is a prehistoric canoe dating to 3500 B.C. The area around Opelika was once the heart of the Creek homeland. E n t e r t a i n m e n t Other popular exhibits include artifacts from the old Pepperell Mill, a textile mill with a surrounding mill village that once served as an economic engine for the city. In fact, Opelika and her old mills provided the location for the 1979 film Norma Rae, which told the story of a factory worker from a small Southern town who got caught up in the struggle to unionize. & A r t s The Museum of East Alabama, located at 121 S. Ninth St. in the heart of Opelika’s historic district, was founded in 1989 by John T. and Eleanor Harris. The museum now houses more than 5,000 25 creating babies with durable plaster of paris heads covered with fleece-lined fabric. A willow stick served as a spine to hold the head onto an oilcloth body stuffed with cotton from the local gin. “They’re ugly, but they’re very valuable—and we have one of the best collections anywhere,” Buxton says. Space was gained by paring down collections so only the most representative items were displayed. artifacts, with some 2,000 visitors yearly learning about the history of both Opelika and East Alabama. “Before, we might have had six or seven of the same things sitting side by side,” Buxton says. “Now, we can change out displays and keep the museum fresh.” Opelika first appears on maps as far back as 1733. Currently, one of the two largest cities in Lee County, Opelika was originally settled as part of Russell County and was incorporated February 9, 1854. The original town boundaries, specified by the Alabama Legislature, were described as “being one mile in every direction from the railroad station,” which was thought to be the center of town. Opelika became the county seat of Lee County on Dec. 15, 1866. Lee County was organized from portions of Tallapoosa, Macon, Chambers and Russell counties when Alabama created nine new counties out of former Indian territory. w w w . o p e l i k a . c o m “With the renovation, the museum is finally becoming what the founders wanted it to be,” Buxton says. 26 The building is still the same size, but there’s a lot more “walking around room” thanks to redesign. One of the Auburn University engineering and design school classes took the museum on as a project, proposing that the museum be divided into six different sections. Another class came in and actually designed the exhibits, and a retired architecture professor, Dr. Richard Milman, painted a watercolor mural that depicts the area and its history. The six sections are East Alabama at work, at war, on the go, at play and at work, as well as the people of East Alabama. Included in the sections is a complete parlor from the home of Lee County’s native son, Gov. William J. Samford, who died in office in 1901. Another display shows a complete frontier kitchen. The museum also boasts one of the most complete collections in existence of Alabama Indestructible Babies, dolls manufactured in nearby Roanoke, Ala. Ella Smith started the doll business in 1899, Renovation has been slow because of funding, he notes. The first two phases, costing about $200,000, were paid for by large contributions. The upcoming third phases, which will cost about $100,000, are being paid for by a grant from the Charter Foundation. Although the number of visitors is increasing every day, Buxton says most are still from out of town. “People bring relatives and friends,” he says. “But then, we have local people come in all the time and say they didn’t know we existed.” o Civil War Voices – A Musical Event of a teenage boy dressed in a brass-buttoned Union uniform, musket at his side, stiff and formal and staring straight into the camera. The boy was Alex Sawhill, the brother of Harris’ maternal greatgrandmother. Killed by a stray bullet, Alex didn’t live to see 19. Later, he learned about Joe Harris’ diary. Uncle Joe, an Alabama cotton planter, was a Confederate who might have fought Sawhill somewhere in some long-forgotten skirmish. In Joe’s last entry, dated Dec. 31, 1865, he prayed for reconciliation. A ttorney Jim Harris, whose roots reach deep into Opelika’s history, never imagined that reading the spidery scrawls in a dead man’s diary would lead to his becoming a playwright. The diary belonged to his great-great uncle, Joe Harris, a reluctant Confederate soldier from Alabama. Harris is the author of “Civil War Voices,” a musical that made its debut in March 2008 as a fundraiser for the Museum of East Alabama. Since that humble introduction, the show has traveled around the country, appearing in venues from the Ritz Theater in Talladega to the famed Wolf Trap arts center outside Washington, D.C. “I wrote the play in honor of my mom and in memory of my dad,” he says. “It’s been a wonderful thing to see the musical touch so many people.” A r t s Harris remembers as a boy seeing the faded black-and-white image Hearing sniffling in the audience, Harris looked up to see several members of the audience in tears. He realized that combining a few true stories of the Civil War with original arrangements of the beautiful songs of the period would create a powerful performance. He approached Mark Hayes, an award-winning concert pianist, composer and arranger, with his idea. & As a boy, Harris spent many a school vacation on the Harris family farm near Opelika. Although he grew up in Nebraska, Harris and his four brothers knew a lot about their family history. Part of that history included Civil War soldiers on both sides, a reminder that the two warring sides were really the same people. Harris began giving talks about the diary, ending with the final entry—a plea for reconciliation, healing and forgiveness. After giving the talk several times, he added music from the Civil War as he read the final diary entry. E n t e r t a i n m e n t Harris’ parents, John T. and Eleanor Harris, founded the Museum of East Alabama. Harris’ mother recently celebrated her 100th birthday, he notes. Joe’s journey “was one of doubt about the wisdom of secession. He supported the South, but he still seemed to hold almost no vitriol or hatred towards the North,” Harris told the Washington Post before the Wolftrap performance. 27 “One of the biggest breaks I could have ever had was convincing Mark Hayes to be my collaborator,” Harris says. “When he agreed to work with me, I started thinking, ‘Jeez, maybe this will have a life.’” Harris and Hayes combined songs of the period—such as Battle Hymn of the Republic, Amazing Grace and Sometimes I Feel like a Motherless Child—with the stories of five individuals who recorded their wartime experiences in letters and diaries. The characters represent a cross section of America. Besides Joe Harris, they include Elizabeth Keckley, Theo and Harriet Perry and Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. Keckley was born a slave, bought her freedom and became Mary Todd Lincoln's closest friend and personal assistant in the White House. The Perrys were a young married couple from Texas who were separated by the war, and Chamberlain was a college professor from Maine who fought to preserve the Union. The play follows their lives as the war progresses. Harriet Perry gives birth to a son a few months after Theo departs to fight in the war. After the bloody battle of Gettysburg, Chamberlain becomes a national war hero and accepts the Confederate surrender at Appomattox. w w w . o p e l i k a . c o m Keckley endures the indignity of slavery in early life, but gains her freedom and moves to Washington, D.C. There she becomes close friends with the Lincoln family. Her joy at the news of the Confederate surrender is shattered when President Lincoln is assassinated. And Joe Harris, the passive observer, lives through the war and delivers a passionate plea for forgiveness as the play ends. 28 Hayes actually played the piano for the Opelika debut. That production was followed by a second performance in 2011 sponsored by the East Alabama Arts Association. In between those two performances, “Civil War Voices” gained a much wider audience. Harris says Hayes had a musical director friend in New York City, so they sent her a DVD of the show. She suggested they come to the Big Apple for an “industry reading” where producers and others from the city’s theater community listen to the actors and musicians. Then “Civil War Voices” was entered in the Midtown International Theatre Festival in New York City. Nominated for 11 awards, the production won six. When Virginia’s state theater, the Barter Theatre, heard about the show’s success, they wanted to be involved. That launched a series of 30 performances in Virginia, followed by a run in Charleston, S.C., during Ft. Sumter’s 150th anniversary. The national tour followed. Now, Harris and Hayes are negotiating a publishing deal to make the script and music available for all kinds of groups, from high schools to community theaters to professional theaters. They plan to rework the production to include a larger cast. “A theater like the Barter has to pay equity rates, so they have to be very careful about costs,” Harris says in explaining why the cast until now has been kept to five characters. It’s really no surprise that Opelika was the birthplace of a production that has gone national. The city has a long history of homage to the arts, with the East Alabama Arts Association offering worldclass performances ranging from comedies such as Monty Python’s “Spamalot” to the Tschaikowsky St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra making its first tour in the U.S. Opelika is also home to one of the Southeast’s top tourism events, the Victorian Front Porch Christmas Tour, which takes place every year in early December. Opelika’s historic Victorian homes are transformed into a Christmas wonderland with the front porches on turn-of-the-century homes are transformed by the addition of life-sized Santas, angels, toys, carousel horses and other figures. The event has been featured in publications such as Southern Living and Better Homes and Gardens. o Exploring the Arts in East Alabama O pelika can boast of many treasures and at the top of the list is The East Alabama Arts Performance Series, which celebrates 25 years of “changing the cultural landscape of East Alabama” in 2012. a 1,200-seat theater located at Opelika High School. According to Beth Ringley of The Motive Group, Opelika is certainly on the leading edge. The Motive Group is currently managing Opelika Power Services. The smart grid also will be extremely reliable and able to heal itself during power disturbances. “Television, Internet and telephone services are kind of the icing on the cake and will help pay for the project,” Ringley says. “This cutting-edge technology offers a significant attraction for new business,” she notes. The city-owned utility will offer television, Internet and telephone services to city residents, but Ringley says that’s not the best thing about the $25-million-plus project. w w w . o p e l i k a . c o m “The system will enhance the electric system and services,” she says. “If you want your home to be more energy efficient, you can allow the utility to control devices like the thermostat and save money.” 40 This “smart-grid” network is the reason for stringing the fiber-optic cable to homes in the first place. Smart grids are advanced electrical networks that can improve energy efficiency, enable variable pricing based on the time of day, and reduce disruptions. They require digital networks for two-way communications, and computerized meters in homes. “Electric systems that have this type of infrastructure will see lower rate increases as the price of electricity increases,” Ringley says. In other words, Opelika’s new smart grid should help keep energy prices stable for Opelika Power Services customers because the utility will be able to monitor and respond to varying power demand. “It’s a great tool for attracting new business to the community,” Ringley says. “Most high-tech firms and large businesses are looking for ultra-high-speed data delivery.” Ringley also mentioned that when Chattanooga installed a similar system to upgrade electric service, a side benefit was the recruitment of jobs to the community. Corporations, communities and even countries are pursuing ways to utilize the next generation of broad- band, a technology seen as the gateway to a new wave of Internetbased products and services. The project is being funded by a $28.3 million bond issue and will include construction of a new Opelika Power Services headquarters building. “Fiber-optic cable is the future,” Ringley says. “Everything will be fiber all the way to the business and home.” A myriad of private companies provide cable service, but she says most don’t use fiber-optic cable. “And they’re not in a position to upgrade their service, because they would have to spend millions of dollars,” Ringley adds. “Somebody’s got to do it.” o B u s i n e s s & I n d u s t r y 41 Economic Development in Opelika is Going Strong T here’s really no secret why national companies make the decision to locate in Opelika. “The industrial success in Opelika is due in large part to the location along the I-85 corridor and to the foresight of the local leadership to invest in the infrastructure system to be prepared and ready when opportunities arise,” says Lori Huguley, the City Economic Development Director. In September 2011, Opelika announced that Pharmavite, the manufacturer of Nature Made Vitamins, would build a new 330,000-square-foot East Coast manufacturing facility in the Northeast Opelika Industrial Park. The company, which announced plans to invest some $76 million and hire 280 employees within the first year of production, is scheduled to start production in January 2013. the Opelika site and existing buildings in Birmingham and Montgomery. w w w . o p e l i k a . c o m “The site selection process was very thorough, and we evaluated several high-quality locations, but ultimately it was clear that Opelika was the best fit based on the criteria we established for this location,” Ron Pillsbury, Pharmavite’s vice president for operations, said at the time of the announcement. 42 Pharmavite will be located on a 50-acre site in the Northeast Opelika Industrial Park, one of the city’s three industrial parks. The Northeast Opelika Industrial Park boasts 2,200 acres located along I-85, with a dedicated exit. The park is complete with needed utility infrastructure and has more than 1,700 acres still available for future development. Initially, Pharmavite looked at more than 50 sites from around half a dozen states, according to news reports. When that total was whittled down to around a dozen sites, company officials visited the finalists. The state then had three sites that made the next cut: “From the high-quality work force to the strong community infrastructure, Opelika met or exceeded our expectations,” he added. “We’re excited to be joining such a great community.” Pharmavite produces and distributes more than 120 dietary supplement products in the U.S. and more than 100 internationally throughout Japan, Taiwan, Mexico, South Korea and Iran. The new facility is part of Pharmavite’s strategy to capitalize on the growing global consumer trends on health and wellness and meet increased demand for its products. At the announcement, Mark Walsh, Pharmavite’s chief operating officer, said the new facility would allow manufacturing capacity undergo three to four hours of dialysis at least three times weekly at an outpatient clinic. Building its dialyzer plant in the U.S. supports Gambro’s strategy of further growth in the expanding market for synthetic dialyzers. The company has major dialyzer manufacturing plants in Hechingen, Germany, and Meyzieu, France. U.S. headquarters are located in Lakewood, Colo. Gambro company officials say they chose Opelika as the location for the new plant because it offers a skilled workforce, proximity to Gambro’s customers, and a potential pool of university-trained experts from nearby Auburn University, one of Alabama’s largest universities. Opelika has also been very fortunate with development on the commercial front as well, Huguley says. near the East Coast markets that make up a significant portion of the company’s business. The company’s headquarters are in Northridge, Calif. Huguley says existing automotive suppliers Mando, Hanwha and Daewon also have recently announced expansions to the tune of more than $33 million, adding some 70 additional employees. Additionally, automotive support industries Hana Automation and Nalara have located in Opelika and have invested over $1 million and will create up to 100 jobs, she says. Opelika is located midway between two major automotive plants—Kia in West Point, Ga., and Hyundai in Montgomery— making the city an attractive location for suppliers. I n d u s t r y The 100,000-square-foot Gambro facility is located in the 300acre Fox Run Business Park, which fronts on I-85 and runs along U.S. Highway 431. The facility produces Polyflux® dialyzers, a key component in the process of kidney dialysis for patients who The area around Tiger Town is also growing, she says, and later this year Gander Mountain will begin construction in the area. The Minnesota-based chain specializes in outdoors sporting gear and has more than 100 stores in 23 states. o & “Gambro has been well pleased with the workforce they have cultivated and has hired 170 associates,” she adds. “Tiger Town has been a resounding retail success story,” she says. “It is continuing to grow with two new additions currently under construction.” B u s i n e s s Opelika is also home to Gambro Renal Products, a Swedish manufacturer of renal and cell-based therapies. Huguley says the Gambro plant was the single largest industrial capital investment in Lee County, exceeding $165 million in U.S. dollars. 43 46 w w w . o p e l i k a . c o m My Jerusalem – Rebuilding Broken Walls by Lending a Hand T wice a year, area churches, campus ministries and individuals come together to do home repairs, painting and yard work for the elderly, the disabled and others who need help in Opelika and Auburn. The event, called “My Jerusalem,” is a project put on by a local ministry founded by Shane Kyles, a former code enforcement officer for the city of Opelika and a former Lee County probation officer. “Basically, the event came out of the story in the Bible, Nehemiah 2:17,” said Kyles. “Nehemiah said, let’s rebuild the walls that are broken so the people won’t be in disgrace anymore, so we’re rebuilding the broken walls of our city—the homes of people who can’t afford to have them repaired.” As many as 800 volunteers from area churches and campus ministries have come out for the biannual work day. Volunteers got to work hammering and painting at more than 30 sites. Other vol- W o r s h i p 47 unteers staged two block parties, one at a trailer park in nearby Beulah and another at an apartment complex in Auburn. “It’s a day when anybody can serve, no matter their gifts,” said Kyles. “We do projects from re-roofing a house to giving cookies to shut-ins. This time we had a couple of roof jobs, some holes in the floor, and some people needing wheelchair ramps.” “Block parties take place in neighborhoods,” Kyle said, “where people need to feel the love of Jesus.” At the block parties, volunteers cook hamburgers and hot dogs, serve sno-cones and man blow-up games for kids. “It’s like a small fair,” he says. “We get a lot of kids and their parents out. Usually we do a project in a neighborhood that doesn’t get a lot of attention, so the kids come out and wonder why we’re working for free.” w w w . o p e l i k a . c o m The block parties are a form of outreach, Kyles smiles. Some of those kids end up hanging around, and several young men even started a Bible study group with the ministry. 48 “They came out of gangs and pretty rough households, and now they see some hope,” Kyles says. “They saw someone showing love to someone in their community, and they wanted a part of it.” Kyles, 37, officially started The Way Ministries—not affiliated with The Way International—two years ago, but he’s been doing this kind of work for about six years. His background in law enforcement has led to some funny incidents. “For one of our first projects, we went out to widen a bathroom door for a man with no legs who was in a wheelchair,” he recalls. “His son came out with his fists balled up and insisted he wasn’t going back to jail!” Kyles had met the son in his previous job as a probation officer. “The good thing is we spent time there, which led to a relationship where years down the road the guy, his sister and his dad all became like family to me,” he said. Referrals come from various sources, including churches, home health nurses and even the Opelika mayor’s office. “The mayor told me about a house right in the middle of town that was so hidden by wisteria that everyone thought it was abandoned,” Kyles remembers. He recalls an elderly woman occupying the house; however, and Kyles said she didn’t even realize she was living in a “natural disaster.” “We cut down the wisteria and painted her house, and she said she was just thankful to see the sun coming through her windows again,” he remembers. “For us, it’s really a blessing to get outside of yourself and serve.” o Membership Quick Facts Referrals & Information Center The Opelika Chamber is a business based organization that receives thousands of requests for information and referrals.
