ISA International
A pioneering international
partnership has been formed
between ISA Training and Discovery
Training in Cyprus to deliver
hairdressing qualifications.
ISA are providing verification and
support for City & Guilds NVQs in
hairdressing delivered by Discovery
Training’s three training centres in
Cyprus.
same values that we have, which is
absolutely essential to us and I think
he’s in a perfect position to grow his
business in Cyprus.”
She explained that the international
partnership dovetailed with ISA
Training’s Oyster Programme. ISA
is currently bidding for a second
Leonardo Project in which we will
partner with Discovery Training
to send 10 Learners to Cyprus,
possibly in 2014. This will follow this
year’s project which will see 10 ISA
Learners spend 2 weeks in Spain to
experience the hairdressing industry
there.
“Our agreement with ISA Training
enables us to deliver accredited City
& Guilds apprenticeships in Cyprus,
where British based qualifications
are highly respected and valued,”
said Robert Stirrat, Managing
Director of Discovery Training.
“Through this collaboration we will
share ISA Training’s good practice
and values. Rather than being just
another City & Guilds centre, our
ambition is to be the premier training
centre on the island and I am keen
to develop our relationship with ISA
Training.”
Hairdressers who complete the Level
3 NVQ will also be State Registered
with the Hairdressing Council in the
UK. In addition to making visits to
Cyprus, ISA Training staff will hold
regular video conferences with
Discovery Training.
Mr Stirrat said he chose ISA Training
from five UK training companies
recommended to him when he first
considered the partnership.
Shirley Davis-Fox, ISA Training’s
Managing Director, said: “We
were absolutely delighted to be
recommended and then chosen
by Discovery Training as an
international partner.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for us
because we believe in sharing
best practice. Robert shares the

Barbers to Join
the HC’s State
Registration
Scheme
The British Barbers Association is calling
for barbers to have the opportunity to
become State Registered alongside
their hairdressing colleagues. Director
and co-founder of the BBA Mike Taylor
approached the Hairdressing Council
last October to discuss a possible
amendment to the 1964 Hairdressing
Act to allow barbers to become State
Registered. Parliament approved the
amendment in December 2012 and the
final stamp of approval is due to be
given when the Hairdressing Council
next sits in London on 27th February.
Habia Launches
Professional Beauty
Register
The Habia Skills Academy is to develop
a professional register for the beauty,
nails and spa industries to help raise
professional and quality standards as
well as boost consumer confidence.
The voluntary register will be accessible
by the general public so they can
identify industry professionals who have
met a range of criteria currently being
developed by an independent technical
group and Habia’s expert forums. The
cost for individual membership of the
register is still being finalised, but is
unlikely to exceed £35 per year.
There are also plans for a Skills Passport
which industry professionals will be able
to use to update their qualifications and
experience.
Rob Young, Habia MD, said, “We have
consulted with a number of partners
and the feedback has been consistently
positive. This is what the industry wants
Radio ISA
Salon International and has currently
2,500 members. Mike will be actively
encouraging all of his members to
become State Registered to further
professionalise the sector. He said
“With barbers and men’s hairdressers
encountering a more discerning
clientele, there is an increasing need to
raise professional standards. Becoming
State Registered will give those barbers
who wish to work in the USA and
Australia the backing of the Hairdressing
Council, which is an internationally
recognised body.
Following recent high profile media
coverage for the Campaign for State
Registration, ISA’s Managing Director
Shirley Davis-Fox was invited to speak
live on Radio Wales last December,
representing the Hairdressing Council.
Shirley’s interview on The Louise Elliott
Show was broadcast live from the BBC
Wales studios in Cardiff stimulating a
debate about the professionalism of the
sector with listeners phoning in with their
experiences. Louise Elliott’s Afternoon

Employers have told us they would use
this register for recruitment, as it gives
them a set of established and agreed
criteria they can work from.
He added, “Habia is entering a new
era where sector professionals must
embrace the need to demonstrate their
professionalism in a way that is utterly
transparent to employers and has the
trust of the general public. This register
will be a key element of gaining that
new level of trust.
For long serving professionals without
formal qualifications, Habia – along with
the technical groups and forums – will
be developing a mechanism so that they
too can gain entry to the register. Habia
will launch the register to consumers in
summer 2013.
Those interested in joining can register

With regard to hairdressing, Habia
remains committed to supporting
the State Registered Hairdressers
(SRH) programme operated by the

This summer, 10 learners from ISA
Training will gain valuable career
experience in Tarragona, Spain as
part of a pioneering exchange project
funded by the European Commission’s
Leonardo Programme. This project is
the first of its kind in Wales for work
based learners working towards
an Apprenticeship. The standard of
applications and interviews was very
high and after much deliberation the
following learners have been chosen:
Karly Williams,
McCarthy’s, Blackwood
Sophie Peake,
Hello Gorgeous, Penarth
Katie Evans,
Enigma, Whitland
Cerys Morgan,

Gwenllian Mair Thomas,

Ellen Rees,

Marcus Scott,

In December, ISA Training achieved
Investors in People Gold status
joining only 3.2 % of IIP accredited
companies in the UK to have achieved
this highest standard.
Shirley Davis-Fox dedicated the
accolade to her staff:
“To be given the gold standard is like
winning the Olympics,” she said. “I am
so proud of my staff and they deserve
this recognition. Our company ethos is
to strive for excellence in everything
we do and we all share this vision.
Investors in People is not an award;
it’s recognition of how an organisation
uses best practice to employ and
develop its people.”
“Achieving gold additional
accreditation represents achievement
of world class best practice and
shows ISA Training is a truly cuttingedge organisation operating at the
highest levels of people management
practice,” said Investors in People
assessor Dr Patricia Weslake-Evans.
In her report, she states: “ISA’s culture
based on Inspire, Succeed, Amaze,
is particularly strong. Ideas abound,
everyone is able to contribute to
continuous improvement and growth.”
ISA Training has been Investors
in People recognised since it was
formed nearly 15 years ago and now
joins only 60 other companies in Wales
who hold the Gold Standard.

Jobs Growth Wales
Success
The Welsh Government’s EU-backed
Jobs Growth Wales programme has
played a key role in creating a business
with potential for real growth for salon
owner Loraine Evans of Klipz, Kenfig Hill.
In the process she’s been able to help
up-and-coming young stylist Vicky
Edwards, 21, to get her career back on
track following a road accident that
crushed her confidence and threw her
job plans into turmoil.
Lorraine, a hairdresser for nearly 30
years, only recently took the plunge
and opened her own salon. She hired
a junior, but Jobs Growth Wales made
it possible for her to recruit Vicky as
a fully-trained stylist to expand her
clientele.
Lorraine explained: “When you set up a
business you have a lot of expense so
I was nervous about taking on staff at
first, but because of Jobs Growth Wales
I was able to recruit Vicky and use any
surplus money for advertising. That has
been really successful in bringing new
clients.
Because Vicky is here, we have been
able to extend our opening hours. She
has also helped bring in a younger
clientele and expand the services we
offer. We hope to keep on growing. Our
apprentice is learning well so we hope
to get her established as a stylist and
then take on another apprentice,” she
added.
The arrangement has been a godsend
for Vicky too. She had always wanted
to be a hairdresser but, after three
years training at college, and only a few
months in a job she was involved in a
car crash which left her with back pain
and unable to stand for long periods.
She lost her post as a result and
subsequently struggled to hold down
a job, as her confidence drained
away. She applied for further training
courses. ISA advised her to apply
through Careers Wales for the Jobs
Growth Wales programme in order to get
on-the-job experience and regain her
confidence and that’s exactly what’s
happened.
“Since I came here I feel a lot more
confident. If it wasn’t for Jobs Growth
Wales I could not have done it. It gives
the employer six months to get to know
you and six months for you to build up
your clientele. It’s been brilliant,” she
said.
Since Jobs Growth Wales was launched
last spring, ISA have helped 125
young people find work placements
in companies throughout Wales. 25 of
these have now come to the end of
their placement and have gone onto to
start formal apprenticeships in full time
employment.
Closer to home, another beneficiary is
ISA’s very own Jason James, who after a
successful 6 months on the programme
has just been taken on permanently
to join ISA’s Administration Team at our
office in Bridgend.

Money for Life
Two teams of learners from ISA
Training have entered the Money for
Life Challenge, a national competition
for 16-24 year olds to run a project to
improve money management skills in
their communities. The most inspiring
projects will progress to National
Finals and the UK Grand Final.
The first project ‘Speculate to
Accumulate’ addresses the need to
spend a little money to save some
and that making a small investment
can reap rewards in the longer term.
The team, consisting of learners from
the ISA Voice Panel will see how much
they can save by purchasing NUS
cards and using them as much as
they can over 8 weeks. They will then
First Beauty
Achiever
promote this concept to other ISA
Learners.
The second project team made up
of Level 1 learners from ITEC are
working on ‘Pimp for Pennies’. They
plan to demonstrate that you can
look good and feel great without
spending a fortune. They are planning
coffee mornings where they will
be demonstrating hair, nails and
up-cycling of clothes on a budget
and running community workshops
enabling students and young mums to
have a go themselves.
Both teams have already been
successful in being awarded a small
grant to facilitate the projects.
Congratulations to Paula Quinn,
Bliss, Talbot Green and her Training
Consultant Louise Morgan for
delivering ISA’s first Beauty NVQ.
Paula has successfully achieved
NVQ Level 3 Beauty-Massage and is
awaiting her full framework certificate.

VTCT Tunics for
Beauty Assessors
VTCT has teamed up with ISA Training to
co-brand beauty tunics for our Beauty
Training Consultants.
“ISA Training is continually evolving
and a natural progression for us was to
offer a range of beauty qualifications
to our clients, alongside our suite of
hairdressing qualifications,” explained
Managing Director Shirley Davis-Fox.
“ISA has an excellent relationship with
VTCT, who sponsor a beauty category
at Salon Cymru. It was natural to
choose VTCT as our awarding body for
beauty qualifications, given their strong
reputation within the sector.”
Dawn Elliott, ISA’s Marketing Manager,
said ISA Training’s unique brand identity

and strong corporate colours were
perfectly suited to the design of the
tunics, which incorporate both the VTCT
and ISA logos.
“Our trainers are easily identifiable in
our clients’ salons and we are able to
promote the ISA brand as well as raise
awareness of VTCT daily,” she added.
Recent sector surveys have shown that
the number of hairdressing salons that
aim to offer more beauty services is
increasing rapidly.
