Ampelopsis brevipedunculata
Ampelopsis brevipedunculata Porcelainberry Amur peppervine AMBR7 8202 Jil M. Swearingen, USDI National Park Service, www.forestryimages.org Voucher specimens needed in ND, SD, NE, KS, MO, IA, MN and IN. Ampelopsis brevipedunculata Porcelainberry Amur peppervine AMBR7 8202 Form: Woody, perennial vine that can grow up to 7 m. Leaves: Alternate, tapering towards the apex, cordate basally; margins coarsely toothed; petioles often as long as the leaf blade; pubescent on the underside at least along main vein; at least some are 3-lobed (or rarely even 5-lobed). Flowers/fruit: Small and greenish-white; in clusters; Jun-Aug. Stalks of inflorescences pubescent. Fruits are berries, pale lilac to dark blue, (or white, yellow and pastel shades of green). All colors can occur simultaneously on the same plant. Habitat: Grows well in most soils, but especially around ponds, along streambanks, thickets, and waste places. Needs full to partial sun, so most likely will not be found in mature forests or in areas that are permanently wet. Other distinguishing features/notes: Possibly confused with other native species in the Vitaceae, especially raccoon-grape (A. cordata) which has leaves merely toothed or barely lobed and peppervine (A. arborea), which has pinnately compound leaves.
