Welcome 140 new PPTA members! _____________________________ Colleagues, Official Newsletter of the Philippine Physical Therapy Association October to December 2010 See you all in Davao for the Philippine Physical Therapy Association 2011 National Convention on August 26 & 27. PPTA Holds 2010 National Convention “Broadening the Reach of the Filipino Physical Therapist” was the theme of the 2010 National Convention of the Philippine Physical Therapy Association, Inc. (PPTA) that was held last December 4-5, 2010 at the Traders Hotel, Pasay City, Metro Manila. About 400 physical therapists once again gathered to discuss current trends and issues in the physical therapy profession. Before the convention formally commenced, the annual PPTA general assembly was held. Induction of new PPTA members and renewal of oath were done during this session. PPTA President Gayline F. Manalang Jr., MOH, PTRP and PPTA Treasurer Arthur Bhenedict K. King, PTRP also presented the President’s and Treasurer’s reports, respectively. The event kicked off with the keynote address given by Undersecretary Teodoro Javier Herbosa, MD of the Department of Health. The first plenary delved on the collaborative practice of Filipino physical therapists. Almira Tagala-Manuel, PTRP represented Filipino PTs working on disability-oriented non-govenrnment organizations. Leoniv R. dela Cruz, PTRP portrayed PTs in a corporate ergonomic set up. Experiences on sports injury was also shared by Raymond J. Pili, PTRP, and Mylene L. Aguirre, PTRP talked about Bobath Advocacy Group in the Philippines. The plenary was headed by Mr. Donald S. Lipardo, MSPT, PTRP. Development of cultural competence is the focus of the symposium which included the following topics: “The nature of culture and its impact on health care”, “Cultural misalignment in health care” and “developing culturally competent physical therapy professionals” by Laufred I. Hernandez, MPM, MA, Giselle M. Manalo, MD, MIPH and Maria Eliza Ruiz-Aguila, MPhysio, PTRP, respectively. Maria Elizabeth M. Grageda, MHPEd, PTRP facilitated the plenary. For the second day of the convention, Gayline F. Manalang chaired the first plenary underlining on professionalizing homecare PT practice. Jeffrey John D. Andrion, PT, MA(CDS), BSc(PT) and Atty. Rodolfo Noel S. Quimbo discussed “Homecare services and the rights and needs of PWDs in modern society”. “Requisites of an independent physical therapy practice” was given by Ulysses S. Juntilla, DPT, CertSMT, CCI, PTRP. Royson A. Mercado, PTRP presented “Homecare PT as an entrepreneur”. Emmanuel Joseph L. Murray, MBA talked about “Homecare physical therapy as a business.” There were also plenary sessions on “Enhancing PT Practice through Online Educational Resources” by Marian Grace A. Gabor, PTRP, DMS, “Health Promotion for Non-communicable Diseases in PT Practice” by Ernesto R. Gregorio Jr., RMT, MPH, and “Physical Therapy Services: Universal Health Care and PhilHealth” by Dr. Ramon P. Paterno, MPH. Skill workshops were also done which included manual therapy of the lumbosacral and sacroiliac spine, exercise in sports, muscle taping, bedside physical therapy management, lymphedema, exercise in older persons, updates in pediatric physical therapy, exercise prescription for specific cardiac conditions and teaching professional behaviors in PT practice. The convention concluded with closing ceremonies including invitations for PPTA 2011 National Convention in Davao and PPTA 2012 National Convention hosting the 8th Pan-Pacific Conference on Rehabilitation (PPCR). Rimando, PTRP WCPT Corner Gawad Inoturan 2010 ICF Update Join over 3,500 physical therapists from around the world at the 16th International WCPT Congress on 2023 June 2011, Amsterdam, Netherlands. There is a strong programme of International Classification of Functionaing, Disability and Health (ICF) related topics including a focused symposium, satellite programme education session and a networking session. In addition to these components of the programme dedicated to the ICF, a number of presenters are using the ICF as a component of their programme or presentation. New officers, directors & 434 new therapists took oath The new set of PPTA Board of Directors (BOD) and Board of Officers (BOO) was inducted last September 19 at the Manila Hotel along with 434 new PT's and OT's. The keynote speech was delivered by DSWD Secretary Dinky Soliman who challenged and spurred PT's and OT's to serve their country first before looking to go overseas. She reminded everyone that we have as much need here of PT's and OT's as foreigners do abroad even though we have less to offer. A message the new BOD and BOO took to heart as they start their 2 year term. Arthur Bhenedict King, PTRP Awardees of the Gawad Inoturan 2010 First day of the PPTA National Convention was culminated with 2010 Gawad Inoturan wherein exemplary contributions of various Filipino physical therapists were recognized. These awards are given to honor Jose I. Inoturan, who is the founding president of the Philippine Physical Therapy Association. Recipients of the said awards are the following: Fawziah P. Mama and Jocelyn F. Agcaoili, MSPT, MHPEd for Natatanging Physical Therapist Award; Hon. Bernadette M. Reyes, MHA, PTRP, RPT for Lingkod PPTA; Mr. Kristofferson G. Mendoza, PTRP for Natatanging Kasapi ng PPTA; Advanced Physical Therapy Clinical Training Program and Implementation of FUNfitness by Physical Therapists in the Philippines for Natatanging Simulain sa Physical Therapy. Board of Directors and Officers of the previous term (20082010) were also given recognition for their invaluable service to the association. Christian Rey D. Rimando, PTRP Report on 1st PPTA Strategic Planning unveiled In observance of the 46th Founding Anniversary of the PPTA, President Gayline Manalang Jr. released an anniversary message based on the proceedings of the first PPTA strategic planning session held last November 6 & 7.
