CareFlite and the Dallas Fort Worth Hospital Council announce the winners of 2013 Great First Responder
Awards. This year’s winners come from 39 first responding agencies. Since the program’s initiation in 2007, 581
awards have been presented.
Unfortunately, 14 of this year’s winners are awarded posthumously. Twelve were First Responders who died in the
fire/explosion in West, Texas on April 17, 2013. The two others died in the line of duty in separate responses.
Great First Responders are those individuals, whether volunteers in rural fire departments or paid staff in larger
communities, who share a common trait. When there is danger, trauma, or someone is need of help, you will find
Great First Responders there always ready to bring life-saving assistance to all who need it in their community. If
there is danger, they run towards it in order to protect the people and the community at risk. Fires, tornados,
hurricanes… you will find Great First Responders there working to reduce the danger and help those affected.
These are the heroes among us. Someone who runs a hardware store, except when the siren is heard or the pager
goes off. Someone who is a paid fireman at his job but a volunteer where he lives. They are the front line of the
never ending war fought each day and night against trauma and tragedy. They are the heroes among us.
CareFlite, founded in 1979, is America’s oldest joint use air medical program. In addition to its air medical program,
CareFlite operates five 911 systems, extensive ground ambulance operations stretching from Stephenville to
McKinney, wheel chair vans and fixed wing air ambulance. CareFlite is sponsored by Baylor, JPS, Methodist,
Parkland and Texas Health Resources. As of 12/31/12, CareFlite had transported 664,477 patients since beginning
operations on 10/1/79. Its Caring-Heart Membership program has approximately 150,000 members. More
information is available at www.careflite.org .
The Dallas Fort Worth Hospital Council is a 75-member organization with more than 40 years of service to the
North Texas healthcare community. Governed by a 14-member Board of Trustees made up of hospital executive
officers, the hospital trade association is committed to the continuous improvement of patient care. More
information is available at www.dfwhc.org .

14, 2013 for an outstanding response to
a car wreck last summer. Pictured above

The Great First Responders from the left
are Jacob Foresman, Lt. Andy
Cleveland, and Kane Wilt (with his wife
and sons). Not pictured are Chris Lidster
and Josh Baker. All the winners are Fire
Fighters and Paramedics.
This team responded to a car wreck. Arriving on the scene they found bystanders doing CPR on a gentlemen in
his 50’s. They reported that he had pulled over, gotten out of his truck and vomited. He had not the vehicle in
park, so when it started to roll, he jumped back in but wound up crashing. He suffered a cardiac arrest.

The responding team took all of the appropriate steps to provide emergency medical care while the bystanders
calmed and controlled the patient’s dog who was very protective of his owner. The patient was transported to
the cardiac cath lab at Methodist Mansfield and was subsequently discharged without neurological damage
thanks to the quick action of the bystanders and the outstanding team provided by this team from the Kennedale
Fire Department.

CAREFLITE & LAMAR OUTDOOR CO-SPONSOR TEXTING PUBLIC SERVICE BILLBOARDS
In order to combat the growing epidemic of distracted driving, CareFlite and Lamar have posted a
significant number of billboards with the following message: “Want 2 go flying? Txt while driving.” The
campaign provides 1.5 million impressions per week on Lamar’s billboards in North Texas. With
CareFlite’s brand recognition as the oldest joint use air medical service in the US, residents of North
Texas immediately recognize the CareFlite helicopter as a medical transport service that responds to
critical motor vehicle accidents. A copy of the billboard is shown above.

Flag Day / June 14, 2013
CareFlite’s Grand Prairie campus decorated for Flag Day.
On June 14th, 1885, Bernard J. Cigrand, a 19 year old teacher at Stony Hill School, placed a 10 inch, 38- star flag in a
bottle on his desk then assigned essays on the flag and its significance. This observance commemorated the adoption of
the Stars and Stripes as the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777. President Woodrow Wilson, issued a proclamation
calling for a nation wide observance of Flag Day on May 30, 1916. Then in 1949, President Truman signed an Act of
Congress designating the 14th day of June every year as National Flag Day.
The house where Mary Young
Pickersgill sewed the flag that
Major Armistead ordered raised
on the morning of September 14,
1814 is a National Landmark and
open 6 days a week. It is located in
the “Little Italy” neighborhood
just east of Baltimore’s Inner
Harbor.
Francis Scott Key, held prisoner on a British warship during the battle of Baltimore, witnessed the bombardment of Fort
McHenry on September 13-14, 1814 (during the War of 1812). The British fired between 1500 and 1800 rounds at the fort
while also attacking on land. The Americans suffered 4 killed and 24 wounded, the British around 330 killed, wounded or
captured. As the sun began to rise, Major George Armistead, the garrison commander at Fort McHenry, ordered the fort's
small storm flag lowered and replaced with the standard garrison flag measuring 42 feet by 30 feet. Sewn by local
seamstress Mary Pickersgill, the flag was clearly visible to all of the ships in the river. Thus it was by the dawn’s early
light that Key was inspired to write the song that became our National Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner.
Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
