Town of Shaunavon
WELCOME TO OUR TOWN – SHAUNAVON
Thank you for your interest in our community. Shaunavon is a vibrant town of 2,000
people who enjoy a quiet rural lifestyle, along with the benefits of a strong business and
professional sector. We are rich in ideas, spirit and exuberance for healthy rural living.
We are proud of the fact that we are known as a designated regional centre for the
southwest corner of the province of Saskatchewan. The amenities and services are second to
none – from a strong education system to a high level of health care.
In 2011, Shaunavon will be launching the “Wickenheiser Centre”, a beautiful new
community recreation facility that will house four sheets of curling ice and a skating/hockey
arena. We are proud to be honoring Hayley Wickenheiser, our hometown hero and the world's
greatest female hockey player. The project is one that the community has been committed to for
a number of years, and most deservingly awaits the day it will officially open. The facility will
eventually house the Wickenheiser Museum which will become another tourist attraction for
southwest Saskatchewan.
Our Town Office is located close to downtown, where you will find our staff most
pleased to answer any questions you may have, whether you are considering establishing a
business in our community, looking for a friendly place in which to live or just wanting to know
more about us.
Sincerely yours,
Sharon Dickie

HISTORY
Shaunavon is a town known by many names: Bone Creek Basin, Boomtown, and the
Oasis of the Prairies. Each name represents a significant piece of the rich and vibrant history of
Shaunavon, Saskatchewan.
The history of Shaunavon begins, as many rural communities do, with the building of the
railroad. The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) purchased the Shaunavon town site in 1912. On
September 17th, 1913 the CPR offered land for sale at a site in Gull Lake, where people lined up
for days to purchase a lot. Within the first eight hours, 370 lots were purchased totaling
$210,000.00 - an enormous sum in 1913. Many people built their buildings on skids and situated
them North of town to wait for the lot sales to be approved. Within 2 months, Shaunavon earned
its status as a village, and less than 1 year later, the population had grown to over 700 people.
The population growth was significant; Shaunavon became the first community in Canada to
grow from a village to a town in under one year.
Prohibition followed in 1917 to 1924. During this time it was illegal to make, sell, or buy
any alcoholic beverages. Bootlegging became big business in Shaunavon, and one bootlegger,
Peter Druar, was well known for his home brew. One day the RCMP made a visit to Druar’s
home with a search warrant and found three 20-gallon kegs in his basement. The first 2 kegs
were filled with chokecherry wine, while the third contained home brewed liquor. The Mounties
demanded a sample from the first 2 kegs, and believed that the third keg was also wine. The
Mounties told Druar that the wine was fine for his own use, as long as he did not bootleg it.
Druar felt very lucky, but decided to bury the keg of home brew under a horseradish plant.

The name, “Oasis of the Prairies”, comes simply from the abundant spring water supply
that nurtures the growth of vegetation. In 1939 when King George VI and the Queen Mother
toured across Canada, Shaunavon was asked to supply the water for the Royal Train.
Shaunavon has a rich history involving agriculture, ranching and the oilfield as its major
industries for almost a century.
