ABOUT THREE-DAY EVENTING
The sport of Eventing is often described as an equestrian triathlon – one
event featuring three disciplines, or phases, that display the ultimate
bonding of horse and rider. At the highest or international levels, Events
are graded, or “starred” – the higher the number of stars, up to four, the
more complex and physically demanding each phase.
The Jersey Fresh International Three-Day Event holds both three-star
and two-star competitions in which horse and rider pairings must qualify
to compete – a feat that can take years of training to achieve. JFI is one
of only a handful of competitions in North America where spectators can
see, first-hand, some of the world’s greatest equestrians display their
talents – and also see Eventing’s up-and-coming stars vying for their shot
at the top.
The Event opens
with each horse being
groomed to perfection
and “trotted up” by its
rider before an inspection
panel, who ensure the
horse is sound and fit
enough to compete (the
First Inspection or “Jog”).
Having “passed the jog,”
each horse and rider
combination move on to…
Shannon Brinkman Photo
The Dressage
Phase, which begins
the competition.
Dressage tests the
gaits, suppleness, and
communication and
harmony between horse
and rider horse through
a series of prescribed
movements. This elegant
and graceful phase takes
Shannon Brinkman Photo
place in an arena, where
judges award both positive
and penalty points for each movement. Points are computed to arrive at a
penalty score, the lowest score determining the leader going into…
6
The Cross-Country
Phase, the highlight of
Eventing. Horse and rider
trust and endurance are
tested as they negotiate
a jumping course – many
miles in length – at
high speed over varied
terrain and sizeable solid
obstacles, as well as
water hazards, banks and
Shannon Brinkman Photo
ditches. Cross-Country
is the most exciting display of obedience, jumping ability, bravery and
fitness in all equestrian sport. Again, penalty points are incurred for
refusals and/or time above the specified time allowed and added to the
competitor’s Dressage score. A Final Inspection takes place the morning
after cross-country to ensure that horses remain sound and fit enough
heading into…
The Show Jumping
Phase, the third and
final phase of the Event.
Horse and rider must
complete a course of
high obstacles and tight
turns in an arena. Unlike
cross-country jumps,
these jumps are portable
and can be easily
knocked down. After
two days of strenuos
Shannon Brinkman Photo
competition, day three
Show Jumping is a true
test of horse and rider stamina, agility and precision. Final penalty points
are given for rails knocked down, refusals or seconds over the allotted
time. The winning horse and rider is determined by combining penalty
points from each phase – the lowest score winning the competition.

WHAT TO KNOW WHEN YOU GO!
Jersey Fresh International Spectator Responsibilities
Dogs are welcome
at JFI, but they must
be kept on a leash at
all times and, with the
exception of certified
guide or assistance
dogs, are not permitted
in any of the tented
hospitality areas. Loose
dogs will be impounded;
noisy or disruptive dogs
must be removed from
the grounds.
Golf carts, ATVs,
motorcycles, mopeds,
segways or any other
motorized vehicle are
NOT to be brought into
the Horse Park of New
Jersey by spectators,
nor are they available for
rent.
Keep a close watch
on small children who
are often not aware of
the danger that horses
present, especially when
traveling at high speed.
Shannon Brinkman Photo
QUIET PLEASE! Spectator etiquette at JFI closely parallels that of
major golf tournaments. Undue noises can distract horses and riders and
can affect the outcome of the competition or cause an accident. Please
hold your applause until after a competitor exits the dressage arena,
completes a cross-country fence, or finishes their stadium course.
Observe crowd control markers for your own safety and that of the
riders. Stay behind marked barriers and ropes and keep clear of the area
around each cross-country fence. Crossing the JFI cross-country course
14
is permitted, but always
make sure that a horse
is not coming and heed
instructions from the
crossing guards.
Horses always have the
right of way and riders
are not responsible for
avoiding collisions with
spectators. It is your
responsibility to stay out
of the way of horse and
rider. Always look both
ways before moving and
stay alert for directions
from JFI stewards, fence
judges and crossing
guards.
Be still when a horse
is approaching. Sudden
movements of umbrellas,
strollers, or a crowd
can be distracting or
startling to horses. An
innocent movement can
affect the outcome of the
competition or result in
an accident.
Do not assist a competitor during competition. Providing assistance
to a rider during competition, whether solicited or not, is FORBIDDEN
and can result in the competitor’s elimination. Shouting instructions and
giving directions during any phase of JFI is considered unauthorized
assistance.
Do not hesitate to ask questions of officials and volunteers. If you are
unsure of any of the rules or just have general questions about the
competition, the JFI staff will be happy to assist you!

The Traveler “Forever Young” Memorial Trophy
In Memory of Traveler
February 23, 1984 – April 11, 2007
To be awarded to the oldest horse to complete either the CCI2* or
CCI3* competition at the 2015 Jersey Fresh
International Three-Day Event.
Heart, courage, and spirit – qualities found in every great event
horse and exemplified by Traveler; the beloved horse of Aaron and
Kelly Soldavin. An American Thoroughbred, Traveler found his way
to New Jersey after a career on the racetrack and became Aaron’s
first horse. Together they discovered the joys of Eventing – the
highlight of their career being an 8 CCI** Young Rider division at the
last Essex Horse Trials (Gladstone, New Jersey) in 1998.
Not content to settle into quiet retirement, Traveler partnered with
Aaron’s wife Kelly and despite Traveler’s “senior status”, competed
at such events as the American Eventing Championships, the
GMHA Training Three-Day Event, and the Chronicle of the Horse
East Coast Adult Team Challenge. In 2005, Traveler and Kelly were
awarded the Worth The Trust Young Adult Coaching Scholarship
from the United States Eventing Association. The scholarship
allowed them to meet their goal of moving up to Preliminary level,
which Traveler tackled at the age of 22.
Sadly, Traveler passed from this world on April 11, 2007, at the age
of 23. In life he was known as the “professor” – a horse that taught
and took care of everyone involved with him. It was only fitting that
he should be able to be the same in death. His body was donated to
the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center to be used in an
MRI study in the hope that he could continue teaching and helping
other horses that might be facing similar health issues.
This award honors all the older horses competing in the sport of
Eventing. Traveler never planned on retiring – nothing made him
happier than galloping cross-country with the riders he loved. The
Soldavins would like to thank everyone who has been a part of his
life – Drs. David Adam-Castrillo and Brian Murphy of Bucks County
Equine and Dr. Eric Parente of New Bolton Center.
Traveler – may you win many races in the fields of heaven. Farewell,
Dear Friend.

ABOUT OUR CROSS-COUNTRY COURSE
The Jersey Fresh International Three-Day Event takes place among the
rolling hills of the Horse Park of New Jersey, a word-class equestrian
venue where 185 spectacular acres have been permanently preserved by
the State of New Jersey for public, equestrian, and agricultural access and
education.
John Williams
JW Design
Jersey Fresh International is
uniquely proud to have had
John as our course designer
since 2002. An FEI Recognized
3* and 4* and USEF “R”
Licensed Cross-Country Course
Designer, he has also designed
courses across the U.S. and
internationally, including those
for the Virginia Horse Trials, the
Carolina Horse Park, and the
2011 Pan American Games in
Guadalajara, Mexico, among
many others.
John’s course design work
is backed by in-the-saddle
experience. As an Olympic
Three-Day competitor, John represented the U.S. in 1991, 2002, and
– in 2004, helped bring home a Team Bronze Medal during the Athens
games. Extensive competition with top placings at events throughout
the U.S., as well as England, Canada, Spain, and Australia, has given
John a wealth of knowledge and rider’s insight that he brings to all of his
courses.

E DESIGNER AND COURSE BUILDER
The Park’s undulating terrain and many natural features present a dynamic
drawing board for our renowned team of cross-country course designer
John Williams and course builder Morgan Rowsell. Together, they continue
to develop this most exciting phase of Jersey Fresh International into a
challenge that draws both the most accomplished riders in the sport of
Three-Day Eventing, as well as those rising up the ranks.
Morgan Rowsell
Rowsell Equestrian Design
(R.E.D.)
Morgan is our “resident” course
builder. Having worked tirelessly
for many years to develop
the courses for Jersey Fresh
International, he has also
become one of the Event’s most
devoted local supporters. In
addition to his association with
John, Morgan has completed
projects with many other highly
respected names in the crosscountry world, including Mark
Phillips, Mike EtheringtonSmith, and Tremain Cooper.
Design/build assignments
continue to accrue at many
of the U.S.’s most important
competitive events such as Rocking Horse, Seneca Valley, ESDCTA,
Difficult Run, and Radnor, as well as in Ireland and Latin America.
Morgan is an experienced equestrian who events, fox-hunts, and plays
polo – giving him invaluable perspective when constructing cross-country
elements for all levels of competition or training. His philosophy is to
create courses that challenge appropriately and are in full accord with
the exacting standards imposed by the USEA and USEF.

Membership...
Have you ever taken a moment to consider what it takes to keep
a venue like the Horse Park of New Jersey open? As a Not-forProfit facility that receives no funding or assistance from the
State, every penny becomes incredibly important. From the daily
maintenance and repair of the grounds and buildings, to the
equipment, materials, and staff, these alone take up more than
the Park can generate in income.
It is your membership that keeps the Park open and on your list
of places to enjoy. In addition, you are helping to preserve open
space for Equine activities and equestrian sports to thrive. This
facility has an opportunity to provide world-class events on the
East Coast while providing you with an opportunity to use
the Park as a member, spectator and/or competitor. Let's ensure
that the Horse Park of New Jersey reaches its full potential and

EVENTING THROUGH THE YEARS
In 1962, the United States Equestrian Team extended the use
of its then-new training center at Hamilton Farm in Gladstone
by organizing a three-day event that attracted 15 starters.
Several years later, a group of horse trial enthusiasts
living and training in the Somerset Hills area gathered at
a party, also attended by Jim and Gayle Wofford, and
talk turned to the need for well-run competitions for
younger horses. Three-day events had been models
for higher- level competitions, but good courses
and well-built fences rarely filtered down to the
Preliminary and Intermediate levels of the sport.
In 1968, thanks to the generous support of Mr. and
Mrs. Elliot Haller and behind the driving force of their son
Roger, the Hallers’ Hoopstick Farm in Bedminster became
the home of the Essex Horse Trials. The first event was held
in the fall of that year, where only two levels of competition
were offered: Training and Preliminary in a one-day horse trials
format.
In 1971 and 1972, the Somerset Hills Pony Club carried on the
one-day competition during a gap in the history of the Essex
Horse Trials.
In 1973, the event was last run on a fall schedule; the
competition date was then moved to the spring starting in
1974.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the event continued
to grow, attracting both American and international
competitors. The Essex Horse Trials expanded to a
three-day format and eventually moved to the USET’s
Hamilton Farm property, where the Roads and Tracks
phase was held on the scenic dirt roads surrounding the
area and the Steeplechase phase in a large field nearby. Essex
became a major international event with the best-of-the-best
competing for positions on U.S. teams for both Olympic Games and
World Championships.

IN THE GARDEN STATE
1998 marked the 30th anniversary of the Essex Horse Trials.
However, even as that milestone was celebrated, the future of the
event was highly uncertain. Much of the land at Hamilton Farm
had been sold into development and was being transformed
into a golf course, bordered by luxury residences.
In 1999, the Essex Horse Trials did not take place and
the organizers applied for a one-year protection of their
mid-May date. The hope was to renew the competition in
2000 with a revised course and improved footing, but the
event was never resurrected.
In 2003, Debbie Adams and her family approached the
Trustees of the Horse Park of New Jersey to discuss
the possibility of a CCI two-star event at the facility.
Debbie, whose parents were very active on the New
Jersey Equine Advisory Board, literally put the entire
event together and it was a huge success – marking
the return of international-level, three-day eventing
to the Garden State and the inauguration of the first
international equestrian competition at the Horse
Park.
Through 2005, Debbie and her husband managed
the event, which came to be known as “Jersey Fresh”
due to early support from the New Jersey Department
of Agriculture. That year, a CCI three-star division was
added and Horse Park management began to become
more involved in the production of the event.
Now entering its 13th year, the Horse Park highlights
New Jersey’s strong equestrian traditions by hosting the
Jersey Fresh International Three-Day Event – a destination
competition for U.S. eventing with both CCI and CIC threeand two-star divisions attracting over 100 entrants. JFI has
served as a Selection Trials for several Olympic Games, as
well as for World Equestrian and Pan American Games. From
the beginning, the Event has been supported by hundreds of
volunteers, and, in 2015, will be held from May 6th -10th.

FEI CODE OF CONDUCT FOR THE WELFARE OF THE HORSE
The FEI requires all those involved in international equestrian sport to adhere to the FEI
Code of Conduct and to acknowledge and accept that at all times the welfare of the
Horse must be paramount. Welfare of the horse must never be subordinated to
competitive or commercial influences. The following points must be particularly adhered
to:
1.
General Welfare:
a) Good Horse management
Stabling and feeding must be compatible with the best Horse management
practices. Clean and good quality hay, feed and water must always be available.
b) Training methods
Horses must only undergo training that matches their physical capabilities and
level of maturity for their respective disciplines. They must not be subjected to
methods which are abusive or cause fear.
c) Farriery and tack
Foot care and shoeing must be of a high standard. Tack must be designed and
fitted to avoid the risk of pain or injury.
d) Transport
During transportation, Horses must be fully protected against injuries and other
health risks. Vehicles must be safe, well ventilated, maintained to a high standard,
disinfected regularly and driven by competent personnel. Competent handlers
must always be available to manage the Horses.
e) Transit
All journeys must be planned carefully, and Horses allowed regular rest periods
with access to food and water in line with current FEI guidelines.
2.
Fitness to compete:
a) Fitness and competence
Participation in Competition must be restricted to fit Horses and Athletes of proven
competence. Horses must be allowed suitable rest period between training and
competitions; additional rest periods should be allowed following travelling.
b) Health status
No Horse deemed unfit to compete may compete or continue to compete,
veterinary advice must be sought whenever there is any doubt.
c) Doping and Medication
Any action or intent of doping and illicit use of medication constitute a serious
welfare issue and will not be tolerated. After any veterinary treatment, sufficient
time must be allowed for full recovery before Competition.
42
d) Surgical procedures
Any surgical procedures that threaten a competing Horse’s welfare or the safety of
other Horses and/or Athletes must not be allowed.
e) Pregnant/recently foaled mares
Mares must not compete after their fourth month of pregnancy or with foal at
foot.
f) Misuse of aids
Abuse of a Horse using natural riding aids or artificial aids (e.g. whips, spurs, etc.)
will not be tolerated.
3.
Events must not prejudice Horse welfare:
a) Competition areas
Horses must be trained and compete on suitable and safe surfaces. All obstacles
and competition conditions must be designed with the safety of the Horse in mind.
b) Ground surfaces
All ground surfaces on which Horses walk, train or compete must be designed and
maintained to reduce factors that could lead to injury.
c) Extreme weather
Competitions must not take place in extreme weather conditions that may
compromise welfare or safety of the Horse. Provision must be made for cooling
conditions and equipment for Horses after competing.
d) Stabling at Events
Stables must be safe, hygienic, comfortable, well ventilated and of sufficient size
for the type and disposition of the Horse. Washing-down areas and water must
always be available.
4.
Humane treatment of horses:
a) Veterinary treatment
Veterinary expertise must always be available at an Event. If a Horse is injured or
exhausted during a Competition, the Athlete must stop competing and a
veterinary evaluation must be performed.
b) Referral centres
Wherever necessary, Horses should be collected by ambulance and transported to
the nearest relevant treatment centre for further assessment and therapy. Injured
Horses must be given full supportive treatment before being transported.
c) Competition injuries
43
The incidence of injuries sustained in Competition should be monitored. Ground
surface conditions, frequency of Competitions and any other risk factors should be
examined carefully to indicate ways to minimise injuries.
d) Euthanasia
If injuries are sufficiently severe a Horse may need to be euthanised on humane
grounds by a veterinarian as soon as possible, with the sole aim of minimising
suffering.
e) Retirement
Horses must be treated sympathetically and humanely when they retire from
Competition.
5.
Education:
The FEI urges all those involved in equestrian sport to attain the highest possible
levels of education in areas of expertise relevant to the care and management of
the Competition Horse.
This Code of Conduct for the Welfare of the Horse may be modified from time to time and
the views of all are welcomed. Particular attention will be paid to new research findings
and the FEI encourages further funding and support for welfare studies.

THE HORSE PARK
OF NEW JERSEY
CAPITAL
CAMPAIGN
FOR ARENA
COMPETITION
SURFACES
Last year HPNJ announced the plan
for a Capital Campaign to revitalize
its arena surfaces... 2015 the season
begins and the Campaign is underway! Who benefits from a footing
renovation? Directly...The horses
who are asked to show the results of
years spent training. The Rider who
is asking his horse to perform to
the best of his ability. It's not just
for the high level competitor, every
horse that is asked to perform on the
surface benefits from level, safe footing.
Who has contributed? The Standardbred Pleasure Horse Organization
and Colts Neck Trail Riders (Yes,
you read that right!). In addition, a
few concerned individuals who
understand how greatly this project
is needed have also been valued
donors. Eventers get in there, get
after it and make a mark. Every
donation takes this project a step
forward. Next year, in 2016, we would
like to be thanking you as you watch
these horses perform on a surface
that allows a lifetime of work to shine
through. To donate, go to:
