Dizzy Ducks Day Nurseries
Hello...
Welcome!
welcome to the autumn issue
As John Keats wrote so beautifully, autumn is
the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. For
me this is more of a time of new beginnings than
January. Time for a new school year, and time
for resolutions too!
I am always determined not to let Christmas
creep up and surprise me, and I am fully
intending to buy all my presents early this year,
using our Great Gifts feature. I hope that this
issue will inspire you, from choosing a new
school for your child to booking those pantomime
tickets and getting some great seats.
We are excited to be sponsoring the Essex
Baby and Toddler Show which will take place on
Sunday 16th October at Five Lakes. We hope
you will all come along and say hello!
Please keep in touch with us, we love to hear
from you. Why not make friends with us on
Facebook and then you will get to hear about all
our latest news and any new competitions too.
Have a great autumn, until next time,

CHARITY FIREWALK CHALLENGE SEEKS BRAVE ‘SOLES’
Raise money for a local charity of your choice! A Charity Firewalk Challenge
is looking for brave ‘soles’ to take part. It will be held in Colchester on the
evening on Thursday 29th September, and the organisers hope as many as
30 people will take part in this uniquely short but fiery sponsored walk.
Claire Hunt of KAT Creativ, helping to organise the event and a volunteer
walker, says: “It sounds like a crazy thing to do, but when organisations like
St John Ambulance have used it to raise money; you know it must work.
I’m certainly looking forward to it, and it should be a great event – real fun
and completely different. Plus, people can be assured that all the money
raised will be spent locally.”
New Montessori Opening at Matching Green
St Edmund’s Montessori Pre-School is opening in September 2011 for
children aged 2-5 years and is based in St Edmund’s Hall in Matching
Green, Harlow.
It is being set up and run by Mrs Catherine Middlemas, a former deputy
headmistress of Great Beginnings Montessori School in London.
Karen Sterling of Blaze Firewalking, the company which operates the event,
says: “We give everyone who takes part a private, two-hour motivational
fear-busting seminar called ‘Learn or Burn’, which gives them what they
need to walk unharmed across 20 feet of wood embers burning at 1,236
degrees Fahrenheit. People always get a real buzz from it. They have fun
together, but they also break down their own fears and massively increase
their confidence and self-esteem. And if anyone has last-minute doubts,
they can drop out whenever they like – there’s no pressure!”
Catherine, who lives locally, says that starting a Montessori is something
that she has dreamed of doing for a long while now. “I am so excited about
St Edmund’s,” Catherine enthused. “We will be able to offer a very unique
Montessori education for young children in a beautiful hall with our own
large garden. At the same time we will provide a very warm welcome
to parents and families. I am a real believer in helping children develop
confidence and independence through their own experiences. That’s what
Montessori is all about.”

ninth successive year for the free
showcase of diverse and high
quality international street theatre
– ESSEXstreetdiversions.
Some of the finest street
performers from the UK and
beyond will roam Chelmsford town

Children and babies under two
years of age are going to be cared
for at the nursery by kind and
caring nursery nurses in beautifully
furnished rooms with a lush,
expansive garden for outdoor time
along with daily pram walks in a fleet
of Silver Cross Balmoral prams. The
walks will take place around the leafy
Avenues and parks of Lexden as
well as simply being outdoors in the
nursery’s beautiful, natural garden
and will be an important feature of
the children’s daily routine.
The owner Gaynor, understands that it is crucial to offer a home-fromhome environment with one-on-one time and cuddles being of paramount
importance. Younger babies will have lots of ‘tummy time’, stories, musical
and sensorial play and cuddles, and for the slightly older ones as they
begin to explore their world, there will be messy play, arts & crafts, garden
time and beautiful hand-crafted wooden activities to stimulate and develop
knowledge of shape, number, space, colour and size.
Lexden Montessori is looking forward to opening its doors to welcome
children and babies under the age of two and is very excited to be offering
outstanding facilities and exclusive activities. After listening carefully
to parents, the nursery will also be offering baby massage, baby signing,
treasure baskets and heuristic play. Parents have also indicated that they
would feel happier if their child was cared for in the same setting from
babyhood through to school age. Attending the Lexden Montessori Baby
Rooms would ensure that your baby would have a place in the nursery
when they reach the age of two.

The Essex Baby and Toddler Show sponsored by KidAround!
Here at KidAround, we are all about local families
supporting each other, so we are pleased and proud
to announce our association with The Essex Baby
and Toddler Show, on Sunday 16th October, at Five
Lakes, Maldon.
Special Occasion Events was set up by mum Annabel, back in 2009. Since
a successful inaugural event in Northampton, Special Occasion Events have
taken their unique Baby Show to Milton Keynes, Leicester, Oxford and
Warwickshire and are delighted to be bringing the winning formula to Essex.
With so many events around, we asked Annabel what makes her Baby &
Toddler Shows different.
“When I was pregnant with Lottie, now 4, I had no real idea of what I
needed to do in preparation for her arrival and I had no idea what support,
services or activities were available locally – as well as which products
really would make a difference! The only baby shows around were
impersonal corporate shows, full of national names. I knew there had to be
another, better, way of doing things.”
“From the start, we wanted our Baby Shows to be different and fun for
both exhibitors and visitors. We also wanted to give a chance for local
businesses to connect with local people, allowing some fantastic smaller
companies the opportunity to find new customers, and parents the chance
to find great new products, help and advice.”
But The Essex Baby and Toddler Show isn’t just about selling. There’s a
great line up of activities and workshops too. “We want our shows to be a
great day out for all the family- not just the shopaholics! We try to have a
full programme of events throughout the day, both to amuse and entertain
our smaller guests and to inform and educate our more mature ones!”
The line-up for the Essex show includes Gary Good’s Marvellous Magic
Show, the British Red Cross, baby massage demonstrations, bra fittings
from Bras4Mums, children’s music classes, face painting and bouncy
castle fun! Exhibitors already confirmed at this year’s event, include a
hypnotherapist, nursery schools, pre-school activities and, of course,
KidAround magazine. Exhibitors enjoy coming to Annabel’s fairs, and are all
friendly and approachable, and many will offer exclusive show discounts.
We hope to see you there! Visit www.essexbabyshow.co.uk
Summer Show Raises Money For EACH
The Debbie Millar School of Dance have recently presented their annual
show entitled “Summer Holiday” at the Princes Theatre in Clacton.
The show featured a cast of over 200 from both the Debbie Millar School
of Dance and Millar Howar Theatre Arts with the proceeds going to support
East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). Children as young as 2 years old
took part in the title song “Summer Holiday” with other performers from
all ages presenting another 21 dances covering various holiday themes
across the world. Routines performed included “Surfin’ USA”, the “Italian
Tarantella”, the “Minnie Mouse March” and “California Girls”. The adult tap
dancers presented “A Visit to Ireland”.
A new addition to the school this year is break dancing and hip hop which is
led by London-based Stefan Puxon and with a little poetic licence they too
were able to join in the holiday spirit.
The drama and musical theatre elements were provided by Millar Howar
Theatre Arts which Debbie runs with Mike & the Mechanics lead singer Tim
Howar. They performed excerpts from Grease (America) and Mamma Mia
(Greek Islands).

the centre, the Instructor will monitor their progress, setting new work and
encouraging them to take ownership of their learning. By working at a steady
pace with guidance and support, children acquire a strong grounding in maths
and English as well as fundamental tools like self-motivation and independence
in study, helping to achieve their potential at school and beyond.
Over 60,000 children study with Kumon at more than 600 centres in the
UK, and these numbers are growing all the time. For further information

Education
Friends’ Nursery aim to provide a safe and caring environment
where staff know and value every child as an individual. The Nursery is open to
all, those who intend to stay at Friends’ and those who go on to attend other
infant schools.
Friends’ Nursery know how difficult that first step towards your child’s
education can be so they work very closely with parents and carers to make
that first transition between home and school as smooth and enjoyable as
possible.
Children are welcomed into the Nursery in the term they turn three, and like
those in the Junior School, enjoy home cooked lunches in the school dining
hall and the school’s extensive grounds and facilities. The new Forest School
situated within Friends’ School grounds both encourages and inspires children
through positive outdoor experiences to develop independence, self-esteem
and team work.
Supervision is available from 8am for those that require it and children can
remain at Nursery until 5.45pm.
Friends’ School was founded in 1702 by the Religious Society of Friends
(Quakers), Quakers believe that there is something of God in everyone.
This belief influences all relationships within Friends’ School and creates an
environment where your child will be treated as an individual and integrated
into the community. Individuality is cherished and pupils and staff show respect
for the dignity of others throughout the school, from Nursery to Sixth Form.
Visit the Nursery on the Open Morning on Saturday 15th October from
10am until 12.30pm or on the Working Open Morning on 24th November
from 9.30 until 12noon. For further information contact Alison Stanbury

State-of-the-art Pre-Preparatory School for Felsted
Felsted’s new purpose built Pre-Preparatory School will be ready for use from November 2011. The two storey building will provide nine bright and modern
classrooms for children aged four to seven, in addition to a library, reception area, offices and a multi-purpose hall (for lunch and for games, assemblies and other
activities). All areas have been designed with input from the Head of the Pre-Preparatory Department, Mrs Jane West and her team. They have created a space
designed around the needs of children during their early stages of education, which will allow them all to work in an efficient and energizing environment.
Increased demand for places over the past three years has allowed Felsted to fund this new building. Following their recent ‘Excellent‘ ISI Inspection and
‘Outstanding’ Early Years Ofsted Inspection, Felsted are delighted to be able to provide their hard working teachers with the right environment to give their best
to young pupils in their care.
Felsted will be looking at energy sources in line with their Green Policy and will endeavour to use environmentally friendly methods wherever possible. Felsted
welcomes individual visits at any time but is holding an Open Morning on Saturday 1st October at 9.30am.

“The School provides an outstanding education that challenges and
motivates pupils in equal measure.” Independent Schools Inspectorate, July 2011
Summer term at Dame Bradbury’s
School in Saffron Walden is always
lively – but last term was busier
than ever as it ended with a
school inspection.
Pupils and staff took pride in
showing the inspectors highlights
of school life – including the Year
6 play, ‘Robin Hood’ and a Forest
School session with Reception
children.
The inspectors found that
achievement throughout
Year 4 pupils taking part in a science workshop
the school, its pastoral care,
governance, leadership and management and links with parents were all
‘excellent’. The Early Years provision - for children in Nursery and Reception
- was ‘outstanding’ in every category: leadership and management, provision,
outcomes for children and the overall setting itself.
Dame Bradbury’s offers an innovative yet traditional education, helped by
facilities including a sports hall, theatre, science laboratory, music rooms and
an Apple Mac IT suite. Visits from scientists, doctors, politicians, historians and
musicians support the high quality teaching.
There are more than 50 trips a year, including three residential visits to York,
Snowdon and Norfolk, and many after-school clubs, from squash and chess to
Spanish and philosophy.
Dame Bradbury’s creative and performing arts were described as ‘outstanding’
by the inspectors. The School also places a very strong emphasis on good
behaviour and teamwork.
“Our motto is Be Yourself, Aim High and Be Kind,” says Head Jane Crouch.
“We nurture children’s enthusiasms to help them succeed in different areas of
school life. Whether in rugby, dance or drama, or French, sketching or sculpture,
we help children to excel.”
Year 6 pupils progress to a wide range of state and independent schools,
including the Perse and Perse Girls, Saffron Walden County High School, Felsted
School and Bishop’s Stortford College.

pupils, Holmwood House is a
thriving independent coeducational preparatory school
for children aged 4 to 13 years.

upwards, with the addition of Latin in Year 6, and demonstrate excellent
academic progress appropriate to their age and ability. The extended day
in the Prep School, offers pupils access to a rich variety of activities to
expand their interests, experiences and expertise, with activities including
debating, lifesaving, Spanish and archery.
Gosfield School is a small, welcoming independent co-educational

many senior pupils boarding for at least part of their final year to prepare
them for their senior schools. For many years at Holmwood, a healthy
crop of pupils has been awarded scholarships to the very wide range of
senior schools, both local and further afield, to which they progress at 13.
Children also enjoy the use of excellent facilities, including a full size, multipurpose sports hall; a superb all weather sports surface; rugby, football and
cricket pitches; a fully refurbished science laboratory; specialist art, graphics
and food technology rooms; a music suite with practice rooms, a library and

Leavers’ Revue
Form VI pupils at St. Philomena’s performed a fantastic Leavers’ Revue to
their friends and family. The children had been busy learning lines, finding
props, making costumes and signs as well as rehearsing diligently on the
lead up to the big performance. The opening number ‘Rock On’, involved
all the children and the audience were treated to some ‘rock nostalgia’ with
‘Shake, Rattle and Roll’ and ‘You Ain’t Nothing but a Houndog’. Shades
were worn and lips were curled as “Elvis” and his band put in a rockin’
performance, accompanied by children on keyboard, guitar and drums.
The guests laughed their way
through many further songs
and sketches.
Four children caused much
hilarity with their 4 “TVs”
flicking from channel to
channel in a prediction
of what could go horribly
wrong during the Digital
Switchover. Three girls
performed ‘The Ballet Class’
and the audience was
treated to some rather strange ballet positions. There were two classroom
sketches, in the first one the long suffering teacher trying to cope with her
naughty class. To make this even more impressive each persons’ lines
were sung to a different well-known melody. The second classroom sketch
was based on the Gervase Phinn poem ‘The Christmas Story’. Shrieks of
laughter were heard when poor unsuspecting parents realised that the two
pupils in summer dresses and black plaits singing ‘Sisters’ were actually two
of the male members of the class! There were many other entertaining sketches which ended with ‘Rene’s
Cafe’, an hilarious tribute to ‘Allo, ‘Allo with rather strange French accents
being used from the good moaning’ of the English undercover agent as a
French policeman to Edith’s moaning to Rene to ‘urry erp!’ Hankies came
out and lumps were in throats as the class sang their ‘Farewell to St.
Philomena’s’.

What a difference!
As Suffolk’s only provider of a single sex education from 3-18yrs, Ipswich High
School know a lot about girls!
The interaction between the sexes is markedly different throughout their lives,
and unsurprisingly it begins right from the moment they are born. Ask any
mother of a boy and girl, and most will remark on each child’s unique approach
to play and work – they just aren’t the same creatures at all.
Ipswich High School relish the opportunity to tailor-make an education for your
daughter at every stage of her school life. In art, drama, sport and academic
study, the relaxed and focused atmosphere of the school provides the perfect
opportunity for your daughter to fulfil her potential in every field, and at every
age.
From the idyllic location of their Pre-Prep where girls are encouraged to enjoy
open access to our stunning grounds, to the awe-inspiring facilities of the Sixth
Form Centre, they offer an environment where girls can be happy and inspired.
Ipswich High School welcome parents and pupils to visit, from young
toddlers to GCSE students embarking on their A Level choices. To
experience first hand the warmth and vibrancy of Ipswich High School,
please go along for the Open Day on Saturday 1st October from 9.30am
– 1pm, or book a private tour and taster session for your daughter, by
contacting [email protected]. They look forward to meeting you.
Colchester High School
Education
Colchester High School is the only independent school in Colchester with boys and girls from
2 ½ to 16 years old.
Pupils achieve outstanding academic results thanks to the small class sizes, experienced
and professional teachers, and strong pastoral support. CHS is a non-selective school with
a strong focus, from Nursery to Year 11, on the individual child and how to help each pupil
to achieve his or her academic potential whilst also becoming a happy, confident, interested,
responsible and caring member of the school.
Located in Wellesley Road, Colchester High School pupils, parents and teachers benefit
from immediate access to a range of excellent local sporting, academic, research and social
facilities.
The school’s sporting prowess is a direct result of being in a town location as it has use of
local sports grounds specifically tailored to suit each sport. Under the guidance of the school’s
own dynamic teaching team and using these specialist training grounds, pupils are able to
participate in a wide range of sports and have consistent and numerous successes in local,
county and national competitions.
On site, the development from Nursery to GCSE level is carefully planned in the actual layout
of the school. The Nursery, Prep and Junior houses provide a very welcoming, friendly and
fun environment from which the younger children are able to observe the activities of the
Seniors whilst still feeling safe and secure in their own area. Equally, the Senior school pupils
have their own lesson and leisure time areas but are conscious of and respect the younger
pupils. The school offers older pupils many genuine opportunities to work with the younger
pupils and these projects are enjoyed by and are beneficial to all.
Careful timetabling enables the Junior children to share some of the Senior facilities, such as
the Dance Studio and Drama studio, which means that pupils are always already familiar with
their surroundings as they move up the school. Overall, there is a strong sense of continuity
and whole school community.
Both Juniors and Seniors also have access to the school’s Oxford Road Study Centre with its
food technology lab, sophisticated ICT suite, DT rooms and teaching rooms with interactive
white boards. Furthermore, as a Cognita school, Colchester High School benefits from advice,
support and financial assistance from this global educational company.
Parents and prospective pupils are welcome to have personal tours anytime during the school
term and children are encouraged to come in for a “Taster Day” to experience school life
firsthand. CHS also has Open Days on September 24th 2011 and March 10th 2012 from
10am to 1pm.

BRINGING OUT THE BEST
St. Mary’s School educates girls from 4 through to 16 and is the only independent girls’ day school in North
Essex. The school has over 400 pupils across two sites, and is renowned for offering a balanced, diverse
curriculum as well as a warm, family atmosphere. St. Mary’s was recently named as ‘outstanding’ in a report by
the Independent Schools Inspectorate. The Lower School contributes a significant number of 11+ successes
and GCSE results are well above the national average. These successful results are achieved by small class
sizes and dedicated, motivational teaching.
St Mary’s nurtures and promotes every pupil’s talent. They have the opportunity to explore a wide range of
interests. Whether it is performing in a drama production, designing clothes for the School Fashion show,
taking part in an inter- school hockey match, playing an instrument in the school concert or having their
artwork displayed, the girls’ endeavours and achievements are recognised and valued. The girls’ studies and
interests are also boosted greatly by our excursions, from days out at Kew Garden or the Globe Theatre to
Activity Weeks in stimulating settings, including Holland, Seville and the French Pyrenees.
St. Mary’s also believes in creating a caring atmosphere which encourages the girls to think about others. The
girls participate in a variety of fund raising events including cake
sales, fancy dress cross country, dress up days for a number of
causes: Fairtrade, Breakthrough for Breast Cancer, Children in
Need, Horses 4 Heroes and Canine Partners. St. Mary’s operates
a buddy system which helps new girls fully integrate into school life with the help of their fellow students. A
Listeners Scheme has been formed with Listeners offering up their own time for fellow students to speak to
them should they have any concerns.
The efforts made by students and staff in so many areas of St Mary’s school life have been recognised and
we are immensely proud to have been presented with the International Schools Award, Artsmark Gold Award,
Sing Up Gold Award and we have been awarded with our second Green Flag which proves our dedication and
commitment to providing an eco-friendly environment.
In January 2011, St. Mary’s opened the Kindergarten for girls and boys aged from 2 years, which is managed
by the award winning Springlands Nursery. St. Mary’s Kindergarten is set in the beautiful grounds at the Lower
School and also runs a holiday club for the under 8’s.
St. Mary’s School truly believes providing a friendly, family atmosphere, in which every girl is
encouraged to do her very best, proves to be the winning formula for a happy, fully rounded, successful
education. For information on the Open Days (Saturday 24th September 2011, 12pm – 3pm and

Legal Feature
The future of home to school travel assistance
The words ‘budget cuts’ will be familiar to most of us at the moment. In the news over recent months it has been reported that various
government bodies including Local Authorities will be facing budget cuts to them and the services they provide. Here, Samantha Hale from
Fisher Jones Greenwood LLP, talks about the future of home to school travel assistance in light of recent budget cuts.
One area facing budget cuts is the home to school transport budget for most Local Authorities including Essex County Council. In January 2011 Essex County
Council sent a letter to parents providing further guidance on the future of the provision of home to school transport they provide. In addition to this on 11
February 2011 Essex County Council began a formal consultation on the provision on home to school transport for faith schools.
The result of budget cuts could lead to some pupils who have previously received home to school travel assistance being refused this in the future. These pupils
are likely to be ones who the Local Authority has no legal duty to provide home to school travel assistance to. It is likely that these pupils will have previously
received it by the Local Authority exercising a discretionary power they have.
Fisher Jones Greenwood recommend that all parents who are refused a provision of home to school travel assistance or if this provision is altered to check
whether or not they are legally entitled to this. If a pupil is legally entitled to transport, even in the face of budget cuts, the Local Authority must provide the
travel assistance and they would be acting unlawfully if the fail to.
So how do you know if your child is legally entitled to a provision of home to school travel assistance? This is a complex area of law and for this reason a number
of scenarios are included below as well as a summary of whether or not a parent might be legally entitled to a provision of home to school travel assistance.
A child attends a maintained school or an academy school but lives too far from the school to walk - what are their rights?
A child will be entitled to travel assistance in this instance in certain circumstances if:
• the child is under 8 years and has to walk more than 2 miles to school
• the child is 8 years or over and has to walk more than 3 miles to school
A child attends a maintained school or an academy school and cannot walk to
school due to the route - what are their rights?
A child will be entitled to travel assistance in this instance in certain
circumstances if they are unable to walk due to the nature of the route for
example:
• The route is dangerous
• Medical reasons
A child has a SEN/disability - are they entitled to travel assistance?
Samantha Hale is a solicitor at Fisher Jones
Greenwood who specialises in Education law.
For further information about any of the issues
raised here or any other education related
queries, please contact Samantha on
01206 835230 or email [email protected].
If a child attends a maintained school or an academy school and cannot be
reasonably expected to walk to school due to a SEN/disability or mobility
problems they will be entitled to travel assistance in certain circumstances.
If a child has a statement of SEN they should be entitled to travel assistance to
the school named regardless of whether this is a maintained school, academy
school or an independent school. However if the school is named at ‘parental
preference’ a child will not usually be entitled to travel assistance and you
should seek legal advice.
A child attends their parents preferred maintained school or an academy school
but there is a place available in a maintained school or an academy school
closer to the family home - what are their rights?
The local authority does not have to arrange transport if there is another
maintained school or an academy school with an available place nearer to the
family home.
Are any other children entitled to home to school travel assistance?
A child can also be entitled to home to school travel assistance if they are from
a low income family in certain circumstances.
The local authority can also provide home to school travel assistance to
children at their discretion who otherwise would not be legally entitled to
travel assistance. However this is the area of home to school travel assistance
that we suspect will be at the brunt of the cuts to the home to school travel
assistance budget.
How do parents apply for home to school travel assistance for a child?
Applications need to be made directly to the local authority. These can be
completed online, downloaded online and submitted by post, or parents can
contact the Local Authority by telephone for an application form to be sent to
them.
Is there anything that can be done if a home to school travel assistance
application is refused?
If an application is refused parents can appeal against this and we recommend
parents seek assistance with this.
Is there anything further can be done if an appeal is refused?
If an appeal is refused there might, depending on the circumstances of a
case, be further action that can be taken. Therefore if an appeal is refused
we recommend parents seek assistance from a solicitor and that this is done
promptly.

SNOW WHITE & THE SEVEN DWARFS
– PRINCES THEATRE, CLACTON-ON-SEA, ESSEX
Tuesday December 13th – Sunday January 1st
Mirror, Mirror on the wall, what’s the best loved panto of them all? This
Christmas sees the arrival of professional production company Polka Dot
Pantomimes to the Princes Theatre as they present the fairest panto of them
all - Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs. This enchanting fairytale of laughter
and joy will captivate all ages with stunning special effects, spectacular scenery,
some truly amazing flying and a good helping of fairy dust! Performers direct
from London’s West End will join This Morning’s Alison Hammond (star of I’m
A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here and Big Brother 3) as she makes everybody’s
dreams come true playing Fairy Fortune. Alison is sure to inject humour and
magic into this production, which also includes local children from Clacton and
the surrounding area as the all singing, all dancing chorus.
There will be plenty of audience participation, modern songs to sing along to,
huge amounts of laughter and a great story to ensure that everyone leaves

Snow White meets her handsome Prince and falls in love, much to the dismay
of the jealous Wicked Queen. Snow White is forced to flee the castle and takes
refuge with the mischievous seven dwarfs, only to be tricked by the Wicked
Queen who persuades her to eat a poisoned apple. Will the Prince be able to
rescue Snow White? Will Fairy Fortune be able to defeat the Wicked Queen
in the ultimate showdown? As with all pantomimes there has to be a happy
ending – goodness will prevail in the end!

White this festive season, and tickets are

Festive Entertainment
At Civic and Cramphorn Theatres
An enchanting fairy tale for all the family.

great theatre and entertainment
this Autumn by bringing them to
Chelmsford Theatres.
Once upon a time the beautiful Belle stumbles across someone big, hairy and
a little bit scary lurking in the forest. Dame Twiggy and the villagers swiftly
launch a brave but ever-so-unnecessary rescue attempt!
After the successes of The Gruffalo and Something Else, theatre company Tall
Stories presents The Snow Dragon (29 September), a story for 3+ year olds
about a spoilt goat whose actions are questioned.
Can the beast be tamed? Can Belle’s heart be claimed? Can the evil sorceress
Botoxia be restrained? All will be revealed in this magical adventure full of
slapstick humour, sparkling sets, sumptuous costumes and sing-a-long songs.
Laughter, romance, song and dance, sorcerers, lumberjacks, toxic monkeys and
a beast … this story has it all!
Want to get your children enjoying history? Well Horrible Histories (18-22
October) might be just the ticket! Using actors and ground-breaking 3D special
effects the astounding show The Awful Egyptians and The Ruthless Romans

Brought to you by our Queen of Panto, Janice Dunn and Company favourites,
including Ignatius Anthony and Roger DelvesBroughton.

The Many Benefits of Cloth Nappies
Real Nappy Week back in May saw a whole host of nappy events and promotions
across the country, putting cloth nappies back in the spotlight along with the
many benefits they can bring.
If you are new to the wonderful world of cloth nappy you may be wondering
what all the fuss is about. By choosing cloth, for all or part of the time your
baby is in nappies, you could save money and the environment at the same time!
Cloth nappies are comfortable for your baby and come in a range of styles to
perfectly suit the needs of you and your baby.
As with all concepts and products there are often many misconceptions and
outdated information circulating, some of which are addressed here:
Are cloth nappies difficult to use? The designs of cloth nappies have advanced
significantly from terry squares. Today, you can buy a range of shaped nappies
in a variety of colours and absorbent fabrics while Velcro and press-stud
fasteners have replaced the need for safety pins. Cloth nappies are considered
to be just as easy to put on as disposables and some parents argue that their
child is more comfortable.
Are cloth nappies messy? All types of nappies will be messy at some point! Using liners in cloth nappies helps catch the solid waste which is then flushed down
the toilet. You are then just left with wet nappies which can be stored in a lidded bucket until ready for the wash. Will the nappies smell? Storing nappies in a lidded bucket and a few drops of essential oil in the lid will
help contain any nasty niffs. If washing at home cloth nappies will only be hanging around for 2 or 3 days
at the most, rather than one to two weeks in your bin.
Do cloth nappies offer any environmental benefits over disposables? Cloth nappies could be up to 40%
better for the environment than disposables through parents following simple laundering advice. Washing
nappies in a full load can reduce their global warming impact, compared to using disposables. Will my baby suffer from nappy rash? Prolonged skin contact with soiled nappies causes nappy rash
rather than the type of nappy. As cloth nappies do not contain the gels and chemical of disposables and
the fact that you will have to change them slightly more often could help reduce nappy rash.
Will I be constantly washing? Babies, especially newborns, tend to generate a lot of extra washing
anyway. In the early months your baby will get through up to 10 nappies a day, but as your baby grows
this reduces to about 4 a day, so the washing gets much less. Always wash in full loads or try adding
nappies to your other washing.
For more information on Cloth Nappies for the latest information and offers available to Essex
residents please see www.essex.gov.uk/nappies or contact 0845 6037625.
Teach Your
Baby To
Swim
Swimming with
your baby is a truly
delightful experience.
It’s a special time,
when you’re able to
focus purely on each
other and enjoy the
closeness that playing
in water creates.
Babies love water – as you’ll see from the excited smiles and gurgles around
the pool. Swimming from birth in warm water is entirely natural. After all,
they’ve just spent nine months in the womb!
As well as being really good fun and energetic, structured lessons are a
wonderfully sociable activity, and classmates often become friends and a real
source of support.
The uniquely structured Water Babies programme is designed to make the
most of babies’ natural affinity with water, teaching water confidence and
safety techniques from birth. ‘With progressive training, babies can be taught
life saving skills such as turning onto their backs or, following a sudden
submersion, swimming to the nearest solid object,’ comments Caroline Angus,
director of Water Babies locally.
The Water Babies course teaches using voice commands. Learning to respond
to these is excellent for your baby’s mental development. Despite looking
gentle, the lessons provide your baby with a complete physical workout.
Studies have shown that participating babies have improved sleeping and
eating patterns – a definite bonus!
“Many parents find that becoming confident in water increases their confidence
on land. Others say the best thing is finding an activity that they and their
baby both adore. We’ve got the knowledge and experience to ensure our
parents and babies experience something truly extraordinary,” continues
Caroline. ‘As parents ourselves, we appreciate that this is one of the most
magical times in people’s lives and work incredibly hard to enhance it.

Getting the balance right
Children are not just getting taller, but heavier and fatter too. LouiseLangridge Brown of NHS South East Essex PCT gives the following
information on childhood obesity.
Statistics show that an alarming 1 in 3 school children are now
overweight or obese. This significantly increases their chances of
becoming overweight or obese adults, in addition, childhood obesity
increases the chances of developing chronic diseases including:
•
Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
•
Breathing problems such as sleep apnoea and asthma
•
Impaired fertility
•
Cardiovascular disease
•
High blood pressure or hypertension

Misperceptions
There has been a lot of media reports about overweight children and the
images used to illustrate newspaper and TV reports are usually at the extreme
end of the weight spectrum. Such images of extreme obesity may distort
parents‘ perceptions of what constitutes “overweight”. Therefore parents of
overweight or mildly obese children may not identify their child as being at risk
because they compare favourably to extreme images seen in the media.
The trends in childhood obesity rates are a result of widening imbalance

How do we know if our child is above their ideal weight?
We can do this by working out the child’s body mass index (BMI) height weight.
The national child measurement programme (NCMP) measures and records
Reception and year 6 children’s heights and weights and feeds back the results
to parents whose child has a raised BMI for the age and height
If parents are ready to help their child become healthier and fitter and learn
how to manage their weight, they need to be able to talk sensitively and
openly about this issue. Parents can be apprehensive about raising the issue of
being overweight with their child for fear that it might hurt the child’s feelings,
affect their self-esteem or have a negative impact on the child’s eating habits.
The MEND programme is a healthy lifestyle programme for families that
teaches parents how to handle related sensitive issues. Parents/carers
sessions deal with all aspects surrounding the challenges these young people
have to face being above their ideal weight, educating parents on how to
tackle issues of low self esteem, bullying and comfort eating, offering the right
terminology to use when raising these subjects with their children.

Carol-Ann Martin experienced
Children often consume diets high in fat and sugar. This, coupled with the
increase in popularity of computer games and TV viewing, is a contributory
factor in the rising trend in obese children.
Children also gain a great deal from the programme, taking part in group
activities, learning why it is important to have a healthy lifestyle learning,
how to read food labels and being taught how to make healthy choices for
themselves.

Avoiding Tooth Decay - Advice from Sarah Redwood,
Dental Therapist at The Dental Studio
Children’s teeth need to be looked after to keep them healthy, this also gets
the child into good dental habits for life.
Food and drink that contains sugar can cause tooth decay. This includes
sweets, chocolate, biscuits, fruit juice, fizzy drinks and squash. Decay makes
holes in teeth that can become very painful and infected. Even milk teeth can
need fillings or even extracting at the dentist.
The more often sugar is in the mouth, the more likely teeth are to decay. To
avoid decay keep sugary food and drinks to mealtimes only and offer safe
snacks and drinks between meals.
Like sugary food, sweets, chocolate, juices, fizzy drinks and squash are best for
mealtimes or straight after a meal.
Babies and toddlers should ideally use a normal cup or trainer cup without a
valve by the age of 12 months. Bottles and cups with teats or valves (‘no spill’
cups) should not be used after the 1st birthday.
Don’t add sugar to children’s food or drink to avoid them developing a ‘sweet
tooth’.
Provide snacks that are safe for teeth between meals such as;
• Fresh fruit, vegetables or salad • Plain yoghurt with added fresh fruit
• Cubes of cheese • Crackers such as water biscuits, breadsticks, crispbreads
• Bread, toast, crumpets
Provide drinks that are safe for teeth between meals such as;
• Plain water
• Milk
Parents and carers should ask for sugar-free medicines when needed
especially for children who are
taking long-term medication
Remember, with sugar – the more
times a day, the more chance of
decay!
Keep sugary food and drink for
mealtimes.

CINDERELLA
An Art Deco Love Story
by Roger Priddy
rrp £7.99
www.priddybooks.com
by Lynn Roberts
I loved reading this book with my
5 month old Simon. Each page
had different textures and colours
which were used to explain a
different object. These varied
from flowers to trains to animals!
Simon especially loved the shiny
mirror page.
rrp £5.99 www.anovabooks.com
We thought this was a truly lovely
book. It was bright and colourful
with ‘awesome’ illustrations which
are a gentle introduction to the Art
Deco style.
We loved everything about it and I
would highly recommend to children
6-8 years.
The book is aimed at 0+ but
I think it could also be enjoyed for children up
to two years of age as there are lots of different
colours, textures and objects to learn about. Overall,
a wonderful first book for babies, the only thing I’d
change would be to make it longer!

Thank You For Looking After Our Pets
by Tim Hopgood rrp £5.99 www.timhopgood.com
This is a surprising tale, written as a series of notes from the owner
to the person who has agreed to look after the pets, while they are
away. The first task is to feed “Cuddles”, you then realise, as you
turn the page, these are no ordinary pets, as “Cuddles “is a crocodile!
The book then takes you through a series of surprising pets with
witty and funny captions. The pictures are bright and colourful and
Michael particularly liked the roaring lion! We made animal noises
and discussed the animals as we read along. I would recommend
this story for children of both pre-school and early school age. This is a fun
book that children will enjoy and adults will enjoy reading with them!

My Name Is Rose
by Sally Grindley
rrp £5.99
www.bloomsbury.com
If you wanted me to sum
it up in 3 words, I could:
heart-wrenching, tear-jerking,
amazing.
It is the story of a young Romani gypsy girl
called Rose, who, when a terrible accident kills
her parents and family, is left in hospital for
3 months. When she is better she is taken
to England by two people she doesn’t know.
She doesn’t speak English and is hated by
the daughter of her ‘rescuers’. Rose finds a
secret room with a piano, violin and other
instruments and she practices secretly.

This book is about a girl called Lisa and her
friend Mia. Lisa can see dead people and can
hear them talking, Mia can do the same but to
do this she has to hold onto Lisa’s shoulder.
At the beginning you find out Lisa is kept in a
special house where no one can see her but
luckily everyone in the house is let out for one
week, normally Lisa
has to protect all
the ghosts but at
the end she has to
protect herself.
It took me a while
to get into the book,
but once you do it’s
scary and exciting!

This book is funny and
unusual, it confuses you a bit.
It is about Agatha and her
friend who lost her head!
Agatha is 8 in this story so
is her friend, it starts very
informally and then it gets
more in to the story. This
book would be good for
children about 7 or 8.
I loved this book and I think
everyone else would like it
too.
I would give this book 9/10.
