The following officers have been elected to serve you and our club for the 2008 calendar year. President—Ken Koop Treasurer---Robin Koop Vice President---Scot Anderson Director at Large--- Mike Faems Secretary--- Anne Fish There has been one new officer added to the board this year as “Directors at Large”. Mike will help to broaden our outlook and add input for future club activities. All of the officers are committed to dedicate their time and energy to make the club and its activities enjoyable for everyone. President’s Message Winter has finally set in and most of our cars have been put to bed for their long winter’s nap. Our Board members are now busy planning the events for next year. There is considerable work that goes on behind the scenes of any club and I want to thank Bodie, Tara, Robin, Scot and Anne for their help in running the club and the events this past year. There are two other people who do a lot of work behind the scene; Tim Sullivan who keeps our membership roster up to date along with Ked Nilsen who maintains our web-site. They put in the time it takes to keep our club running efficiently. All of them deserve a round of applause! In 2007 we had great participation from our members in all of the club’s activities. If it were not for your involvement and interest, the activities would not be as much fun as they are. So thank all of you who attended one or more of the Pizza Get-Togethers, the ALMS Race in Salt Lake City, the Driver’s Education Event, the Annual Rendezvous Dinner, the Rally/ Scavenger Hunt or the Tour to Big Sky. These have all been wonderful events and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as I did. If you have an idea on how to improve an existing event or a suggestion for a new event, please voice your opinion. We value what you have to say! I know there are a lot of things going on during the summer months, particularly in our area with all the activities that we have to choose from. The Board realizes it is sometimes difficult to decide if you should go to a Porsche activity or golf, hike, bike, head for the lake or just entertain guests. We hope that we can provide some diversion from the norm and offer you something a little different, which gives you the opportunity to enjoy your cars. I’m looking forward to a great 2008 driving season and seeing you and your cars back on the road again. Safe traveling and the very best of the Holiday Season to all of you. Ken Thank you for placing your trust in us. As always, if you have any suggestions for the club, please contact one of the board members to voice your opinion. We are open to any and all ideas. Ked Nilsen has become our new Web Master. He is extremely talented in web design and will be keeping our web-site up to date as well as adding some new changes to improve the site. Tim Sullivan has done a great job at maintaining the clubs roster and has agreed to continue with those responsibilities. Thank you both very much for taking on these responsibilities! What differentiates Kato Kaelin from Thomas Magnum? They both could be considered handsome, they both lived in a guesthouse of a wealthy friend’s estate, and both had jobs that allowed for a casual life style. What makes Magnum the superior of Kato? What attribute completely manipulates your perception of Magnum to the positive? It must be the car. Magnum zips around in a sexy Ferrari and Kato bums rides from OJ Simpson. In 2005 I was living in a hayloft apartment in a red barn (yes, an actual hayloft that had been converted to living quarters) on a friend’s property in Glendale, AZ, working a casual job in a friend’s real-estate investment firm, living an all around relaxing nostrings lifestyle. As a retreat from a hectic pace I had maintained in the years previous while working in the insurance and investment world in Boston and Florida. I drove a Honda and I was Kato. Then in January of 2006 a close friend and mentor passed, I inherited his 97 Boxster. What a transformation took place. I now lived in a guesthouse on a wealthy friend’s estate, I was a realestate investor with plenty of free time for Vegas buffets and flying to the beach in Florida and I drove a wicked sports car. I was Magnum, complete with the Magnum PI theme song ring tone. Armed with these new powers of attraction, I planned to complete the Magnum trifecta, I had the lifestyle, and I had the sports car, now it was time for the many women. Well friends, never underestimate the power of a Porsche on the opposite sex. Within a few weeks I met Mandi and within a few months we were wed on the aft deck of a cruise ship at sea. Mandi grew up in Mayer, AZ a small town outside of Prescott. She Graduated from the world-renowned Orme School and later moved on to the University of Arizona in Tucson. I was raised in Peoria, Arizona and then moved through necessity and progression to more cities than can be listed. We have set our sites on Pocatello where we own with her parents a towing and recovery company. Last March I was fortunate enough to be asked by a close friend of ours, Kent Durkee, also a Porsche Club member, to participate with him in a racing reality show on Speed. The show, called Setup, pitted 10 drivers from different disciplines against each other in identical Pontiac Solstice GXP’s in an elimination format. Kent qualified in first place for the show, we represented Rhys Millen Racing and enjoyed success and victories before being eliminated prior to the final race. Mandi and I are grateful to be living in such a scenic part of the country. We are excited to continue exploring the nearby ski areas and traveling to the great destinations of the northwest. We are pleased to have met such wonderful people through the club and look forward to building lasting relationships with the members in the Yellowstone region. We plan on attending as many of the club events as possible, as long as Higgins keeps letting us borrow the car. Old Faithful Porsche PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA - YELLOWSTONE REGION Presenting the Yellowstone Region’s New Web Site Ked Nilsen has just completed the refurbishment of our web site. His ideas, concepts and presentation are truly spectacular! Please visit it and see the wonderful work he has done. The site is kept current with all of the club’s latest information along with our past events. Please thank Ked next time you see him for all his hard work in putting this site together. Visit http://yel.pca.org/ and you too will be impressed! Old Faithful Porsche Corner Ken’s PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA - YELLOWSTONE REGION I thought it would be different to write a short article regarding people in the car hobby. Also, to have a little fun with people, well, kinda like me! You Know You’re a Racer or Car Enthusiast If: • Your spouse doesn’t understand why you need three sets of tires for your car. • You pay $8.00 for a quart of oil and are convinced that the engine runs smoother and has more power. • Your library consists of auto parts catalogues, books written by famous sports car drivers, anything about Porsche’s and 400 car magazines. • You have race, auto shops and car dealers programmed into your speed dialer. • You think the primary purpose of a wing is to PREVENT flight. • The neighbor asks if you have any oil, to which you query “Synthetic or Conventional” and they reply, vegetable. • You think that the last words of the “Star Spangled Banner” are “Gentlemen, start your engines”. • You hate long distance driving vacations, but you will gladly drive 800 miles to the race track. • You and your spouse go house hunting and you never actually get inside the house because you’re too busy checking out the garage. • When you hear “Overcooked it”; instead of food you’re thinking, “Off the track”. • Your garage holds more cars than your house has bedrooms. • Your family brings the couch into the garage so they can spend some time with you. • When someone asks where you went to school, you reply “Skip Barber”. • After you tell your spouse where you’d like to go on vacation they answer: “Why, is there a car event there”. • You carry pictures of your cars in your wallet. • You spend more on insurance premiums than on food. • You know the “Racing line” of every turn in your daily commute. • When something falls off your car, you wonder how much weight you just saved. • Every time you go to the grocery store you feel compelled to beat your previous best time. • You refer to the corner down the street from your home as, “Turn One”. • You would choose a roll bar over air conditioning if it were an option. • You thoroughly enjoy showing the tailgater behind you how to drive around a highway off-ramp. • Your first date involves asking that person to crew for you. • You’ve just paid $9.00 a gallon for gasoline without complaining. • You bought a tow vehicle instead of braces for your kids. • People know you by your car number---“Oh, you were the one in the gravel last weekend in turn 4”. 10 If you are one of these people, then you will know exactly what I am talking about and this makes total sense to you. Unfortunately, your spouse may feel differently! Top Tier Fuels Retailer Update I have had numerous questions on the Top Tier fuel article that I wrote last year regarding which stations are rated as “Top Tier”. I thought it might be useful to update the Top Tier stations in our geographic area since there have been some recent changes. The following retail stations currently meet the Top Tier requirements. Chevron, Shell, Conoco, Phillips & Texaco. Old Faithful Porsche PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA - YELLOWSTONE REGION Rennsport Reunion 2007 November of 2007 for Porsche fans meant only one thing--Daytona International Speedway! One of the largest gatherings of historic racing Porsches, drivers and fans converged for three days of entertainment at one of the greatest race tracks in the world. The cars came from around the world, including the Porsche Museum, to showcase two of the most famous models in Porsche’s racing history; the mighty 917 and 956/962. Over 700 historic Porsches were registered for the event and many others were brought by people who wanted to display their special vehicles. Many of the private collector cars won’t be seen for many years to come. The three day event started with the opening of the Paddock where visitors could stroll through the garage area to view the cars and speak with the owners and drivers. Photographing and viewing the cars up close is always a special treat. Since this is a low pressure event, everyone has the time to speak with you about their special machines. Almost every type of racing Porsche was represented in the garage area. If you wanted to see street cars, all you needed to do was browse through the model specific parking corrals to see virtually every street model that Porsche has ever produced (more than 600 cars in total). There was such a variety of colors and customized cars, that if you had to pick a favorite one, it would have been virtually impossible. Practice for the many different classes along with parade laps for the special classes took place throughout the day on Friday and Saturday with the races being held on Sunday. A Concourse d’ Elegance was held Saturday afternoon on the pit lane. It was such a beautiful sight to see so many famous Porsches in one location. There were nine members from our club who attended the event; Brian Moore, Bill & Leona Doyle, Ken & Robin Koop, Jim & Bobbi Moses, Bill & Sara Murphy. Bryan and Bill helped to prepare two customer cars Old Faithful Porsche 11 PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA - YELLOWSTONE REGION and Bill also was a judge for the Concourse. There were plenty of things to see and do during the three days. The Porsche Sport Driving School provided some Caymans and a Boxster to drive on an Autocross course all three days. Porsche donated the money they raised to charity, so Robin and I took numerous runs on the fun course (both of us had a ball). An autograph session with the famous past and present Porsche race car drivers was held if you wanted to get your poster or program signed. A Memorabilia Swap-Meet was held with many unique items available for purchase. There was a Porsche Booth with shirts, hats, posters and programs from the Reunion that could be purchased. A special display of cars, representing every street model that Porsche has ever produced, was set up daily in a large viewing area. Porsche also provided a large tent that showcased its present models ranging from their special edition Boxster to the brand new GT2. The Saturday night dinner was held at the Daytona 500 Club with 470 attendees. The tickets were sold out the very first day. Unfortunately most of our members didn’t get the chance to attend. It was a wonderful event with a slide show playing during the dinner followed by a panel of three famous Porsche racing drivers consisting of Jurgen Barth, Gerard Larrousse and Wille Kauhsen (all Le Mans winners). They spoke about their race wins, testing experiences and were very informative (as well as hilarious) in their presentation. At the end of their presentation, they answered questions from the audience. The weekend was an outstanding gathering of Porsche people, who had a chance to celebrate Porsche’s past and present cars and drivers. After walking the paddock and parking lot for three days, enjoying dinners with friends and watching the races and Concourse, everyone needed another vacation to relax and recover from the Reunion. Now, we’ll all have to wait for another three years for the next one! I can’t wait.. 12 Old Faithful Porsche PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA - YELLOWSTONE REGION Rennsport 2007 Old Faithful Porsche 13 PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA - YELLOWSTONE REGION Porsche has been known for producing a number of award winning ads and posters. Over the coming issues, we will reprint some of these famous ads. We hope you enjoy them! If you could own any car in the world, what color would you choose? One ride in the 911 Turbo and you know. Not another car in the world could feel like this. Explosive, yet smoooth to the redline. Fluid all-wheel drive imposes your will on the pavement. Certainly, in your choice of exquisite finishes. This series is always hard fought with ten different factory supported teams competing in four distinct classes. Porsche competes in two of the most competitive classes and this year, there was stiff competition against all of the Porsche teams especially from Acura and Ferrari. In the LMP2 class, Porsche dominated almost every race (winning 11 out of 12 class races) giving Porsche the all important Manufacturer’s Championship along with the Engine Championship. The Team Championship was won by Penske with Dyson coming in 2nd (both Porsche teams). The Driver’s Championship went to Romain Dumas and Timo Bernhard, both drivers of the Penske car and the next six places were taken by Porsche drivers as well. This was the first year in the history of the ALMS that an LMP2 class car has taken first place overall at any event. This occurred in 8 out of the 12 season races. The nimble Porsche Spyders dominated the Audi diesels (even though the Audi has a 200HP advantage) throughout the season giving the overall point’s award to Porsche as well. In the GT2 class, things didn’t go quite as well for the Porsche teams. Ferrari was very strong this year and won the Manufacturer’s Championship with Porsche finishing in second place. In the Team Championship, the Porsches of the Flying Lizard Team, Tafel Racing Team and Rahal Racing Team placed second, third and fourth. The Driver’s Championship was also hotly contested with Porsche drivers finishing in 3rd through 14th place. Congratulations to all of the teams for an exciting and hard fought season! We’re already looking forward to next year. Acura is adding at least one more car to the LMP2 class to compete against the RS Spyders. The GT2 class will have numerous new Vipers, Corvettes, a Ford GT and the already tough Ferraris to compete against our Porsches. Next year promises to be one of the most exciting seasons ever with more than 11 factory supported teams racing in the series. Porsche as always, will be ready for another good fight! Like NASCAR, PCA kicks off the race season in Florida in February. Just like NASCAR’s Daytona 500, PCA’s Sebring Club Race is the biggest, most prestigious of the year; in fact, it’s been called the Super Bowl of PCA Club Racing. No other race weekend draws more cars. Maybe it’s the chance to polish the driving skills that have rusted over the winter. Maybe it’s a chance to drive the historic circuit at the old World War II B-17 base. Or maybe it’s just the chance to escape the cold up north and out west. This year the 48 Hours of Sebring, as it’s officially known, attracted 300 race cars, and 60 Advanced DE cars, including a brand new Carrera GT. That’s even more Porsches than Jerry Seinfeld has. Just about every Porsche model was represented in the production and GT classes. Adding to the excitement, 90 Cup cars were entered, the largest collection ever gathered in one spot. 18 Close, clean racing prevailed throughout the fields in each of the four Sprint races and three Enduros. The accompanying photos by motorsports photographer Chris Kelly of Odessa, Florida captures just a small portion of it. Best of all, unlike that other Superbowl, this one doesn’t mark the end the season. It’s just the beginning. All photography included in this article, as well as the cover picture was provided courtesy of “Colour Tech South Photography”. The only exception is the GT3 group shot, photographed by our own Mike Faems. Also, the picture with the black 944 leading the red 944 is none other than our own Mike Faems! Since the weather was excellent, there were over 44 club members who attended. Five members came from Idaho to make the event even more special. Four of our newest members were also present and introduced to the group. It is always good to see both our new, along with the regular members at the club functions. The Get-Together was a nice finishing touch to a very successful club year. The winner’s jacket from the Scavenger Hunt/ Rally was re-awarded since the pictures taken on the original date didn’t develop properly. It was accepted by Robin since it was her navigating skills that led to the first place finish. Quite stylish on her, I must say! Next year, the honorary jacket (a genuine CARMANI) will be passed on to the winner of that event. Our next club function will be a Pizza night, again held at Sidewinders in January. Hope to see you there to join in on the fun. Old Faithful Porsche 21 PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA - YELLOWSTONE REGION Two Future Porsche Club Members! They soared to record profits as well with pre-tax earnings of $8,556,000,000. Their stock price also established a new record all time high of $2,673 per share. As a result of another stunning year, Porsche has decided to split their stock in 2008 at a ratio of 1:10. Porsche is moving ahead at an amazing rate of speed. With the Cayenne Hybrid and new Panamera models appearing over the next two years and its acquisition of VW in 2007, it seems like Porsche can do no wrong in the automotive and financial world. HYBRID POP QUIZ Question: Can you name the company, year and engineer of the first Gasoline-Electric Hybrid car ever built? Answer: The Lohner Car Company in Austria, way back in 1900. In addition to an internal combustion engine, this vehicle also had wheel-hub electromotors that could power and store energy intermittently in the 40 cell-80 volt batteries. Top speed was 28-36 MPH and the battery could power the car for three hours of driving. One year later, the vehicle was fitted with an electric motor at each wheel, making it the world’s first 4-wheel drive vehicle. The car was far ahead of its time-just like its designer; Professor Ferdinand Porsche. The Hybrid is making a comeback at Porsche once again. The latest 2nd generation hybrid system will be offered in the Cayenne and Panamera in 2009.
