President’s Message The More great events lined up in May A From PAGE OBENSHAIN 2013 President pril showers bring May flowers, as well as Porsches and Pancakes, DE at Sebring, Mothers Day, Zone Fest and another DE. I hope you have enjoyed our very busy spring and will enjoy our May activities. A note about my Mother: She tried to teach me to never be on time for an appointment - be early! It must have been the Midwestern USA and German in her. Our April schedule was filled with a wash & shine, a fun rally, a party, an autocross, a member social, a two-day drivers education, a time-speed-distance rally, and a gimmick rally. We accomplished just about every event this club does except a Christmas party and the only reason is that it was the wrong time of year! All of the above takes a dedicated team to host these entertaining events. Please extend your thanks and apprecia- INSIDE THIS ISSUE OF PORSCHE Profile tion to our chairpersons and the volunteers when you see them. Our team has dreamed up some events, which may have never been tried with our club and we will look for your feedback. If you have new idea for an event or would like to jump in and volunteer to help out, please come forward. On the business side of our club, Alicia has greatly improved our Porsche Profile publication but all of those improvements come with a cost attached. We knew they would. A postage increase in 2013 added to the cost. We will conduct a survey of our members soon to determine if an online version emailed to you is your preference or if you prefer a printed hard copy mailed to you. Please respond so we can deliver Porsche Profile to you as you prefer. The online delivery is most cost effective but we will continue to mail out copies as requested. The ad rates will increase somewhat with the January 2014 issue to cover some of the increased cost of our wonderful publication. Alicia and Melissa, thank you for all you do to produce a first class publication. In the first quarter of 2013, we hosted some events with benefits to our charities of All Children’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald House. Did you try an event new to you? Did you learn the fastest line through the cones at the Rookie Weekend Autocross, how to heal-toe at the Sebring DE, proper use of a clay bar at the Porsches on Parade, or rekindle your automotive romance at the Date Your Porsche Night? If so, please thank Bert Smith Porsche, Reeves Import Motorcars, and all those volunteers who took time out of their schedules to make it happen! The month of May has us gearing up for more events and activities! You’ll have plenty of opportunities to meet fellow Suncoasters at Porsches and Pancakes in Gulfport, stretch your Porsches’ legs at the Sebring DE, or show you can do it all at Zonefest. After breakfast, take some time to explore this unique slice of Florida with a stroll about town. Please join us May 4; breakfast will be served from 8-11 a.m. The address is 3054 Beach Blvd. S. Gulfport, 33707. Email your RSVP to Eunice at eunice- [email protected] no later than May 2 to be included. Rumors have been confirmed that our friends at Suncoast Porsche in Sarasota will host our June Date Your Porsche Night. If you are interested in either Autocross or DE, it is possible to come to these events to observe. But seriously, I truly enjoyed visiting the Ringling with Jose Uranga as our guide a few years ago. Porsches, great friends, and magnificent art. What a combo! PORSCHE PROFILE: What’s your occupation and in which part of the Suncoast Region do you live? JOSE VELEZ: I am the manager at Brandon Bikeworks, a family bicycle shop in Brandon. I live just a mile and a half from the shop, yet happily I drive my 1984 911 Carrera to work almost every day. PP: How did you first become a Porsche/ Suncoast enthusiast? JV: My Porsche picked me on June 1, 2007. After searching for the right car for months, almost to the point of driving my dear Nikki insane, she authorized me to take the next step and actually find (not buy, just find) a car starting on June 1, 2007. Did you notice how it’s the same date? That day, I saw an ad in the classified section of the newspaper listing a 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera with only 65,000 miles. I called the number listed and a few hours later I was the proud owner of my lovely black beauty, which I call Bebe. PP: What models of Porsches have you owned and what do you currently drive? JV: My 1984 911 Carrera is my first and, so far, only Porsche. I’d own more if the wife would let me. Love you, Nikki! PP: What is your “dream” car? JV: Hands down my dream car is a 1989 959 in silver - and maybe a 918 - and possi- PP: Is there a Suncoast event in which you excel – or would like to excel? JV: I’m still learning, but I was the Suncoast Region Autocross P3 class champion for 2011 and co-champion in 2012 with Albert Carr. Did I mention that I’m addicted to autocrossing? Love it! I’m pretty outgoing and approach complete strangers about joining us at autocross. So I guess I excel at recruiting new autocrossers, also. bly a 1956 356A Speedster - but perhaps a 1987 slantnose 930 - or a GT1. And a GT2, and a 1974 911 Carrera, and a 944 Turbo. Ok, too many to list. But this should narrow it down: a Porsche. PP: In which PCA/Suncoast activities or events do you participate? JV: I have become utterly addicted to autocrossing! I need help! Please. Can’t stop driving my car fast around orange cones. I break out in a sweat around construction PORSCHE PROFILE • MAY 2013 PP: What interests you, other than Porsche? JV: My wife. Sometimes. When I’m not autocrossing (did I mention I love autocrossing?). I enjoy mountain biking a bunch. We have some fantastic trails near Brandon, and I often ride with fellow AXer Bill Sumansky, who likes to apply his AX skills to the mountain bike trails. Working on Bebe is a lot of fun for me, also, since I’m my own crew chief. My first engine dropped a few years ago so I serviced the transmission myself and that was so much fun! I was a stewardess, now called a flight attendant, with Eastern Air Lines before my marriage to Bob, who was a pilot for Delta Air Lines. I am a southerner raised in Birmingham, Ala. I speak with an accent, or so I am told, to prove that. We raised our two children, son Dana and daughter Tanya, on a farm south of Atlanta along with cows, chickens, pigs, rabbits and, of course, dogs and cats. I mostly was a stay-at-home mom since Bob’s job kept him away for long periods of time. We moved to Pensacola when the children moved to college. With retirement in the future, we moved farther south to Tierra Verde where we have lived for the last 16 years. We have two grandchildren, Tanya’s daughter Ryanne, who is 18 years old and a freshman at the University of Florida. We are thrilled she chose a school close enough for her to come for weekends. Dana has a son, Andrew, who is eight years old, and they live in Anchorage, Alaska. I just returned from taking Andrew home after being with us for spring break. He loved the warm weather and being outside. Bob has become very interested in the Porsche Club and that means we both have become more interested. We have made a lot of good friends and have had some great times with Porsche friends. We both Missy Teasly and her husband, Bob, in front of one of their lovely Porsches. drive Porsches; I have a white Cayenne S, Bob has a beautiful little black Special Edition convertible. The first Porsche: In 1985 the family took a trip to Europe. Bob spent his time with a guide looking for the Porsche he had always wanted. He bought a 1980 brown 911 SC converted to DOT standards. That car now belongs to our son. The brown car gave way in our garage PORSCHE PROFILE • MAY 2013 to the next Porsche, which was a 1990 Carrera 2 convertible. Bob replaced that Porsche with the 2012 Special Edition he drives now. Our interest other than family and friends has been boating but we no longer keep the boat we used to own. We sailed for 18 years and have many experiences to tell, some we’d rather not remember, but still, sailing was an adventure. We moved on to a powerboat and finally got boating out of our system, other than day trips in our Boston Whaler. Automobiles seem to be the interest now and as I write Bob is getting two cars ready for a car show. Life is good. I see being a member of the Suncoast board as a challenge that I hope I can live up to. The folks involved have set a great example for me to follow. 13 Advertisement AAA Visa Gift Cards: A Perfect Fit I Recalculating... a better return route Point your money in the right direction with AAA CDs: • Preferred member rates on 12, 24, and 60-month CDs and IRA CDs • Security and peace of mind with FDIC insurance up to $250,0002 • 5-star Safe and Sound rating from Bankrate.com 3 • Fixed rate and guaranteed returns with flexible terms Open a CD account today— online or by phone! Photo by Jose Velez. Profile hearty group of drivers spent a cold, windy Sunday on the Zephyrhills Airport Taxiway B on March 3rd. A well-designed Mark Lasota course provided several options to drivers, including two slaloms, which could be driven on either side, as well as a choice to drive either of two separate slaloms after a tight turnaround. Faster exit or shorter distance? That was the question of the day. Four fast Boxster S competitors dominated the top five positions on the leader board. Danny Shields captured fastest time of the day, followed closely by Ryan Wise, Rick Bradley, and Sharron Shields. Our final event of the spring will be held May 26 in conjunction with Gold Coast Region at Sebring as part of their Memorial Day weekend Zonefest. The Gold coast organizers have some innovative ideas for course setup and location that you won’t want to miss. Photo by Bob Gibson. A First-Timer’s Visit to the Amelia Island Concours T By BOB GIBSON he Amelia Island Concours has been recognized for decades as one of THE premier events of the American automotive scene. I’ve been trying for years to attend, but my work travel and other obligations have blocked my path – until 2013! There were three factors that motivated me to clear my schedule: First, I learned that my friend and neighbor Ted Stasney (the former editor of Porsche Profile) had volunteered to organize hotel rooms and a Saturday social for our Suncoast PCA members; second, the 2013 Concours, with the help of Porsche Cars North America, had scheduled a special panel event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first 1616 Porsche 911; and finally, I had just completed extensive upgrades on my 2000 Boxster, so this would be a perfect excuse to enjoy several hours of drive time. Ted had reserved a discounted block of rooms at the Sawgrass Marriott in Ponte Vedra for our members, so I reserved one. I departed Clearwater early Ted Stasney with members from the Crown Region. Photo by Ted Stasny. PORSCHE PORSCHE PROFILEPROFILE • MAY 2013 • MAY 2013 Friday morning, March 8. The Boxster averaged about 27 mpg for the trip, with very little traffic along the route. After a tasty lunch, I was ready to start the next leg (about 35 miles) from the Marriott to Amelia Island, north to Mayport Village to the St. Johns River Ferry. While waiting for the ferry, I met a fellow Porsche enthusiast, driving a 2010 Carrera Cab with Alaska plates on it, headed to Amelia Island as well. During the short ferry ride, I dropped the top – temperatures were in the 60s with a crystal-clear sky. It was some of the most perfect driving weather I can recall. On Friday, I noticed a WWII vintage B-25 parked on the ramp. Later that afternoon, it would make some passes over the hotel, with its Curtiss Wright radial engines rattling the windows. After arriving at the Ritz- Lou Copolino and Hercules (Ike) Mihaelarus. Photo by Ted Stasny. The 50th Anniversary 911. Photo by Bob Gibson. Carlton, I made my way to the entrance, where I saw the 50th Anniversary 911 on display at the Porsche tent. There was also a Hagerty’s display with a 1963 vintage 911 and a 1963 vintage Corvette Stingray, the inaugural year for both models. After picking up my tickets at registration, I visited some of the many vendor displays – vintage posters and prints, contemporary automotive art, custom leather luggage, vintage car parts, something for every taste. At 4 p.m., I attended a special event – Porsche’s Flagship at 50 – a Porsche 911 celebration presented by Porsche Cars North America. The stellar panel included: Peter Schutz. president of Porsche Cars, AG, Retired; Alwin Springer, Race Engine Development; Harm Lagaaij, director of Design, Retired; Hurley Haywood, the most successful driver of the Porsche 911, celebrating the 40th Anniversary of his victory in the Daytona 24 Hours of Endurance; Jack Atkinson, former Crew Chief for Brumos Racing; Vic Elford, winner of the Monte Carlo Rally; Jeff Zwart, Pike’s Peak Champion. I’m not an expert on the 911’s history, so I was surprised to learn that, after a disappointing sales year in 1980, Porsche had planned to cease further development on the 911 after 1981. It was saved by a handful of Porsche engineers and executives who “bet the company” on its future success and, fortunately for us, they prevailed. Saturday morning dawned early and we were on the road again for Amelia Island. This time at the ferry we met several Porsche enthusiasts, including members from our Suncoast region. My next stop was a special recognition/panel discussion of the Ford GT40, also celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. I would rank the GT40 and the Porsche 917 as my two favorite race cars of all time. After the GT40 session, I walked the grounds to see many of the new car displays – Porsche, Bentley, McLaren, Jaguar, BMW, Maserati, Lamborghini - too many choices! I met up with the Stasneys and some new Suncoast PCA members for a buffet at one of the many restaurants at the Ritz-Carlton. Refueled, we took on the afternoon – more displays, and an endless array of STUNNING cars! I departed a bit early to return to the Marriott, where we were given a Hospitality Suite, which Ted and Roberta stocked with snacks and beverages. Ted had asked me to provide a presentation of our September 2012 visit to Stuttgart with Fast Lane Travel. After the social, we enjoyed dinner together, and talked over the day. Special thanks to Ted and Roberta Stasney for their contribution, which made this great event even better. If you have not attended the Amelia Island Concours at least once, be sure to put it on your Bucket List. A rare 356 racer being offered at auction. Photo by Bob Gibson. It was an idea that started last year in 2012 and continued in 2013.” The dream began when Miles Franze, Page Obenshain, Dave Bassett, and Dave Herndon, in a sequential brainstorm, went from “What would happen if …” to “We can do this.” And the Pro-Am Kart Race to Benefit All Children’s Hospital in Memory of Dan Wheldon was on. The only problem was there was a little over six weeks to go from idea to race. According to Dave Bassett, Suncoast past president, Patrick Long agreed to participate, Andersen Race Park was booked as the venue, Bert Smith jumped in as the first year’s sponsor, and Susie Wheldon allowed the event to be in Dan Wheldon’s memory, a two-time Indianapolis 500 Champion, who tragically lost his life in a race October of 2011. Dan and his wife Susie had supported All Children’s Hospital in the past. The race committee grew to include Suncoast officials Vice President Jill Perry, Charitable Endeavors Chair Joe Shukys, Web Content Chair Christian Rava, and Chief Track Instructor Grant Painter, who designed the hats that Doug Monaco of Apparel World donated to the race. Bassett said the event was so successful that Patrick Long (a PCA Suncoast member) promised to not only return in 2013, but to recruit additional pros. As a result, the word got out and a total of ten pros signed up. PP: Do you prefer the direct way home or the twists and turns route? I drive Bebe every chance I get. Sometimes I’m gone for an hour. Nikki calls and asks if I’m lost. My car gets exercised regularly – and vigorously. Since I only live five minutes away from work, it takes me a disproportionate amount of time to get home. I usually take the long, long way home. My boss, Sid Collins, was an avid Porsche lunatic and SCCA EP class racer in a lovely 1960 356 tub. I would spend all of my free time hanging out at his house helping him get ready for the next race. Hope it rubbed off! My love for Porsche’s began when I discovered my first 911 in 1983 when I was 15 in Condado, Puerto Rico. It was a stunning Targa that was driving by as I was jumping the school fence to get a snack at the store down the street. Immediate Past President Dave Bassett picked the car up in Sarasota, trailered it to the event in Tampa and returned it to Sarasota. Gordon was there, spoke about his car and told a story or two that had people in stitches. Oh, by the way Gordon brought a receipt for a repair dated August 12, 1958.
