Affirmations
Prize Giving – as mentioned at the beginning of this newsletter, this morning we had our school Prize
Giving ceremony and it was an incredibly special time to celebrate the achievement of many of our
students. It is always unfortunate that not all students can receive a prize as we know that every
student at Manurewa Intermediate School deserves one for something they have achieved
throughout the year. We congratulate all of those achievements but especially the ones listed
below.

Congratulations to:
2015 Counties Zone Sports Competition
Time flies when you’re having fun, and this
year has sped past at a terrific pace! Part of
the fun was the success of our school as a
sporting team. This year has been a hugely
successful one for our sporting teams, and
all the hard work has paid off.
Manurewa Intermediate is the
2015 Counties Zone Sports
Champion!
Three years in a row!
Out of the dozens of schools in the
Counties zone, Manurewa Intermediate has
topped the table! Competition points are
awarded for placing first, second or third at
zone sports tournaments.
A massive thanks and congratulations goes
out to the players, coaches of the teams, and
whanau supporters who played a part in
achieving this amazing feat. You helped make
us feel proud to be from MI!
Bring on 2016!

Manurewa Intermediate:
Counties Manukau
Sporting Excellence Awards
Primary/Intermediate School of the Year!
Oh, what a night!
Come and check out our
trophy!
A group of ten Manurewa Intermediate staff members
attended the annual Counties Manukau Sports Sporting
Excellence Awards on Friday 27 November, forever hopeful
that we would take home the trophy.
Last year, we attended but missed out to Bairds Mainfreight
School. This year, we had done enough to reign supreme!
The night was full of highlights. Guest speaker Peter “Sterlo”
Sterling told us stories, the food was tasty, and Mr Holt‟s
acceptance speech made fun of Mr Taylor - what else could
you ask for?!
Thanks to the team at Counties Manukau Sport!
If your child has been in any sports teams, or if you have helped us coach any
teams, or if you have come along to support any teams - a massive thanks to you as
well! Whanau play a huge part in our success!
Sport is a fantastic way to get kids active, help them make friends and socialise,
learn persistence and the value of hard work, and how to show sportsmanship.
Please encourage your child to take sporting opportunities when they come by - you
never know how amazing you are until you give something a go!

Reports
OMG TECH TRIP
On Saturday, the 28th of November, 32 lucky M.I. students got the opportunity to participate in a fully
funded O.M.G. Tech trip. We left school at 9:00am (eager and determined to learn) and arrived at
Sparklabs at approximately 9:40am.
From there, we were split into five different rotational groups and off we went to our first rotation,
Science. We participated in various experiments involving baking soda, vinegar and a balloon. We
learnt about the differences between carbon dioxide and oxygen. We also measured blood pressure
and what happens when you mix dish washing liquid and milk w/ food colouring. Mr. Bailey enjoyed
building marshmallow catapults and trying to „not‟ pop a balloon!
Our next shift transferred us to robotics.
Once there, we used Scratch(a software
program) to code our machines to complete an
obstacle course. This was really challenging as
we had test our codes numerous times before
we were successful. Mr Filippini took this task
seriously, trying to beat the students but was
highly unsuccessful.
For our next rotation we used TINKERCAD to design 3D printer compatible objects. We also looked
at different pre-printed objects and how the contraption designs objects in layers. They had samples
of things like prosthetic limbs and jewellery which were interesting.
After all the thrilling, but intense, learning we then met
together and took a break and regrouped for lunch.
Our delicious meal consisted of sandwiches, fruit, a
muffin and snacks with dip customly retro fitted to
dietary needs. We even cleaned up rubbish left
behind by other schools!
After our lunch break we were straight back into it with
our fourth rotation. Unmaking. For this rotation we
were told to deconstruct a D.V.D player and find
“hidden treasures”. We believe this was by far the
most splendid rotation of the entire day.
Last, but not least, we had programming. This involved using Scratch to design a quick game. The
majority of the students did a maze but some went above and beyond by creating creative and
innovative games such as dodgeball, mind games and many more.
To conclude the day we showed our immense appreciation towards the Sparklabs staff and
congratulated them for donating their personal services. We left satisfied and even more
knowledgeable in I.T. areas.
Thanks to Ms. Kearney for organising the day and to the other teachers for coming along to support
and challenge us.
By Ta‟a and Jarrod, Rm 13.

KAPA HAKA
On Wednesday the 25th of November, Manurewa Intermediates Kapa Haka group: Te Manu
Ka Rewa ventured to the Town hall in the city, where they performed. Te Manu Ka Rewa
had prepared before travelling to this event which made it easier for all staff and students.
Whilst on the bus, our butterflies overwhelmed everybody
which overtook our energy leading us to grow eager to
perform. We then settled as we were arriving to our
destination, rules and information were dealt with as we
stopped.
Te Manu Ka Rewa had gotten off the bus sensibly, and
lined up close to the wall to give space for tourists. The
weather was very stuffy, especially since it was dark. We
walked inside to where we would rehearse quietly.
Afterwards we had a chat about how proud our tutors are
for us coming this far into the year.
Its finally the time to perform! We started to creep
towards the back door of the stage. As we entered
with a Karanga lead by our Kaea Tiffany, we set
straight up into a semi-circle to give our audience a
blast with the song Hareruia.
As we were singing we could see a crowd full of
smiles. We had performed our bracket with all our
mana, including the haka that was performed last
and lead by Jayvarn. When we had finished, we felt
so proud to have received a standing ovation from
our superb audience.
We rushed outside into the holding room to grab
our stuff. Our tutors and stuff then explained how
proud they are of us having to perform in the Town
hall especially since it was some of the stuffs first
time watching Te Manu Ka Rewa.
We all had achieved the best goal in our
intermediate years and one more performance is
on the way! We arrived back at school and got out
of our kakahu and back home.
We would like to thank the following people for coming to support us:
Whaea Alice (Jayvarn‟s Mum)
Whaea Caline (Vance‟s Mum)
Mr Devereux
Miss Doidge
And a last big thank you to our tutors Whaea Iri, Mr Comer and Miss Apiata for their hard
work and effort put into Te Manu Ka Rewa! We appreciate it!
Thank you, Ngawai (6)

Turbo Touch
On the 26th of November we sent two Turbo Touch teams
to a special tournament that was for invited schools
only. We arrived at Bruce Pulman Park and set up,
warmed up and prepared ourselves mentally for a
challenging day. Unfortunately a few schools had
pulled out last minute so we had to play the same
teams twice. We felt pumped and ready to go as the
hooter sounded.
Our girls team played Randwick Park, Te Rua and
Ardmore and were unbeaten all day which meant we got
straight into the finals which we also won! We helped
teams learn the game and showed good sportsmanship
throughout the tournament. Our boys team also played
Randwick
Park and Ardmore. They won comfortably against
Ardmore but it was a different story against
Randwick, who were all Year 8s and tall... really
tall! We kept our heads up high and played hard.
During the lunch break we had fun playing against the
adults and really showed our skills.
Thanks Mr Kapa for all your hard work training us,
our parents, and Mrs T for supporting us. It was a
great day and we hope to be part of the fun again
next year!

This year’s MI Experience was a HUGE undertaking! 700 kids. 100 adults. 23 Road Blocks. Wow!
The details of the day were kept secret from absolutely everyone until a few minutes before classes
set off. Classes had to make there way around 23 different locations dotted around Auckland City,
completing challenges (or Road Blocks)
for points. The more points - the more
likely you are to win!
The whole school made their way into
town on buses and ended up at either
Point Erin Park, Silo Park or Victoria
Park. Once they opened up their MIzing
Race packs and planned out how to
attack the situation!
Perfect weather, spectacular attitudes,
huge amounts of effort and some
outstanding examples of achievement.
MI kids rock!
We ended up at Victoria Park, with all classes making it back to base on time, and all faces smiling.
We even had some time to play some games at the park. It was an MI invasion, with our maroon and
black uniforms taking over the whole place!
We had help from Counties Manukau Sport and Auckland Council Leisure to set up these wicked
Road Blocks. Thanks guys and gals! We would also like to send out a MASSIVE thanks to all the
parents and whanau who came along on the day as adult helpers. Without your commitment we
wouldn’t be able to provide our kids with experiences like this. You are MIzing!

Weetbix Tryathlon 2015
On Wednesday the 9th of December 2015
MI participated in their very first Weetbix
Tryathlon. Thanks to amazing sponsorship
we received 15 bikes for the school and we
began practising and learning about
transitions, gears and techniques prior to
the Tryathlon, this was a great experience.
Then the day arrived for the big Tryathlon.
We met at school and pushed the bikes
down to Mountfort Park. There was lots of
nerves and excitement in the air. When we
arrived at the park we could see thousands
of kids from all over Auckland. The place
was busy and things were a bit crazy!
We got our bikes into transition, numbers written on our bodies and gear in the right place.
We had two hours to wait before our races so we had a chance to look around and try the
many activities. We especially loved the breakfast tent where we loaded up on free WeetBix.
At 11am we began lining up outside the swimming
complex. Nerves had really started to kick in but we all
stuck together to support one another.
The race began…
Into the pool, out of the pool, running towards our
bikes, onto the bikes and out the gate, around the bike
course and back in the gate, off the bike and into the
run, around the course, heading to the finishing line,
cheers from the crowd, I made it and now have medal
in my hand. What an achievement!!!
We had 20 kids
participate and
everyone finished
with a smile on
their face and a medal in their hands. So well done to

THANKS SO MUCH
1. To all parents and caregivers - for taking an interest in your children and therefore
in our school – for all the things you have been involved in to support your child
throughout the year. In this day and age, everyone leads such busy lives and we
appreciate you giving up your precious time. We go out of our way to do what we
believe is the right thing for your children and your support, encouragement,
suggestions, positive feedback and involvement is appreciated and indeed wanted. We
look forward to seeing you again for another successful year in 2016.
2. To the Board of Trustees Members – for your time, encouragement, commitment
and in allowing the staff to get on and do the job without petty interference – many of
us have seen this occur in other schools and it stops staff from doing anything of use
for their kids. We appreciate your continued support.
3. The general community – for those who have no direct ties to our school – the
feedback and involvement from community members has been incredibly positive this
year and this is a vital link for any school and one we look forward to developing
even more so in 2016.
4. To All Staff – whilst a school is only as good as the person who leads it, it also needs
a staff who get involved in things, who create excitement and fun and learning for our
kids and who do a job, whatever that may be, to enable things to happen. We are very
fortunate here at Manurewa Intermediate School to continue to have a group of
committed, talented, interested and enthusiastic staff who are providing a wealth of
opportunities and experiences for our kids. Thanks for giving up your time freely as
well as displaying great energy and focus. Enjoy your well-deserved break!
5. 2016 - 2020 School Charter - as you will know throughout the year we have
reviewed our current 2010 - 2015 Charter, and have had hui/fono and surveys to
determine the direction of the school for the next five years. The feedback has been
heartening and incredibly supportive of the track we are already on. I especially felt
good about the re-affirmation about our Vision statement and the five Strategic Goals
that drive our work. A massive thank you to all those whanau/aiga who participated in
these discussions and completed surveys to help determine the 2016 - 2020 Charter.

FAREWELL
To our Year Eight students – this can be such an exciting time for you as you move on to
high schools but it is also a time for a few nerves and some sadness. Many of you have been
together since primary school and are now heading off to different high schools. You have
been great representatives of Manurewa Intermediate School. We hope you continue to make
all the right choices and follow our Keys to Success into your high school lives. Most of all
we hope you can continue to be an Adventurous Risk taker and try new things. Don’t forget
to let us know how it all goes as you are all very special to the staff here.
To Staff Leaving – This is also the time of year when we farewell staff both permanent and
fixed term so we wish these leavers well and thank them for all the work they have done, and
the time and aroha they have put in to the students over the varying amount of time they have
been here. Farewell and good luck to:
Fixed term contract staff:
Ms Lomu and Mr Borrows - we wish you well for your future challenges and trust you put
vigour and enthusiasm into whatever it is you do. Thank you for your relieving work these
past three terms.
Permanent Staff:
 Ms Mareena Pask - who has been with us for over eight years as a Learning Assistant
and now heads off to University to train to be a teacher. Wonderful that you are doing
this Mareena and you will make a superb teacher!
 Mr Carl Roberts - who has been our Property Manager the last two and a half years
and heads off to start up his own business. Good luck with this exciting venture.
 Mrs Nikki Ridgley - who has been teaching PE and Math the past three years and
heads off to contemplate life! Good luck!
 Ms Anne-Marie Lalakai - who has been teaching Music the past four years and is off
to Wesley College as HOD of Music. Congratulations on this promotion and good
luck! You will be outstanding!
AND….
a special farewell to…

MRS MOREEN HEDLEY
.
…who has been teaching at Manurewa Intermediate School, with a few years off between
babies, since 1979! That is 36 years of association - WOW! She was teaching here when I
was a student here even! Moreen heads off into well-deserved retirement and a new lifestyle
change with her husband David, in the Bay of Plenty.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank you for your outstanding and stirling work for our
kids. Moreens acknowledgement is best summed up with excerpts from my letter accepting
her resignation…
Dear Moreen
Oh Boy!!
The end of an era!
Your work at Manurewa Intermediate over the past 36 years has been a huge part of not only
your own life, but also of your family’s with their involvement in your work and their love
and support of you for that work - work that you love. David especially has obviously been a
huge supporter of you and in turn the kids in your class and I really want to acknowledge his
support too…

As a classroom practitioner, in the work you do, you are beyond compare, but also in your
capacity as a supportive colleague and team player you have been particularly outstanding. I
know you established a strong, relevant and effective programme, along with the systems and
structures to support this for the children who needed that special extra care, love and the
kick up the butt at times too. There was a need for intensive liaison with parents and outside
agencies and this has been a huge responsibility in the past, and very time consuming with
home visits and the like…and no doubt mentoring of parents! This shows your absolute
dedication and commitment to your kids!...
You set very high standards for yourself - expecting the same from the people you work with,
be it your students or other staff. Many of your methods and practices are a model to others
and I love it how you are always prepared to go the extra mile in any job (your Survival
Camp camp site is testament to that!) and on all occasions you have readily accepted what we
have had to do because it is good for our kids! This has been priceless in my eyes!...
Your sense of humour, which you consistently use to great effect will be sorely missed
Moreen, and that loud, cackling laugh will echo the corridors from as far back as the old
Room 13 to Room 1 to the new Room 37!...
This will be missed!
As a teacher Moreen you have always believed in strict routines and fair, consistent discipline
with a big dash of love and you have actively ensured that standards are maintained at all
times - within your own classes and indeed across the whole school…
This will be a loss.
But mostly Moreen, I will miss your absolute passionate advocacy for our kids! You have
also been an example of lifelong learning, doing the hard slog with your study whilst working
full time. What a commitment this was!...
So again, on behalf of the three Principals you have worked with, the hundreds of staff you
have worked with, the approximate 1080 kids you have specifically taught and the tens of
thousands of kids in the school during your time here…thank you!...
You have not made a difference to the students that you have taught, leave knowing you have
made a monumental difference to the students that you have taught, and in fact their whanau,
as well as the wider Manurewa community and the staff you have worked with!...
You will be missed! O fakamitaka, Monuina e fenoga to manatu tukulagi.
With much love and affection from us all at Manurewa Intermediate School.

Acting Principal 2016
For the entire 2016 school year Mr Devereux will be the Acting Principal as I am away from
the school working alongside the Ministry of Education, and the Minister of Education,
Hekia Parata, as the President of the New Zealand Principals Federation.
This is an elected position, elected by all Principals in NZ and is based in Wellington. I am
looking forward to, hopefully, having an impact on education across New Zealand, but will
be eagerly looking forward to my return to Manurewa Intermediate School in January 2017!
I know Ross and the leadership team will continue to exert positive influence over our school
to give all our students the best deal possible. I know I will miss the energy and passion that
is alive in our school but will return as vitalised as ever and rearing to go. Please give Ross all
your support and encouragement, as he will be giving your children!
FINALLY
2016 looks set to be another exciting and action packed year for our students. I wish
you and your families a very Merry Christmas, a happy and safe holiday period, a
successful and exciting New Year and we look forward to Tuesday 2nd February 2016
with eager anticipation. This is our first day of 2016 and we are having this as a
“Whanau Day” and encourage as many parents/ whanau as possible to join with us for
the entire day and to participate in activities and be in class with your child! Come
along and enjoy!
