Malvern Preparatory School
Director of College Counseling
Malvern Preparatory School
Malvern, PA
For a position to begin in the summer of 2015, Malvern Prep is seeking a talented and experienced college
counseling professional who will fully embrace the school’s mission and core values. The ideal candidate will be
a knowledgeable, creative counselor who is eager to work as a key member of the school’s leadership team in
designing and executing a comprehensive program to guide and support Malvern families in their pursuit of
postsecondary opportunities.
Malvern Preparatory School is an independent, Catholic
school of 654 boys in grades 6 through 12. For more than
170 years, the school has been committed to academic
excellence and Catholic values, rooted in the Augustinian
tradition.
The school was founded in 1842 by the Augustinian Friars
as a secondary school and college on what is now the
campus of Villanova University. In 1922, the secondary
school moved to its present location, a beautiful 103‐
acre campus in Chester County on Philadelphia’s Main
Line. The Middle School was launched in 1978. Malvern is
a member of the Inter‐Academic League.
Dedicated to preparing young men for higher education
and their roles as active, contributing members of society,
Malvern is firmly committed to the Augustinian values of
Veritas, Unitas, and Caritas – Truth, Unity, and Love. The
school offers a comprehensive educational experience that
includes
rigorous
academics,
highly
successful
interscholastic sports teams, a burgeoning arts program,
and a Christian Service program that helps to shape
students into servant leaders.
Malvern is flourishing under the leadership of Head of
School Christian Talbot, who joined Malvern in 2012,
succeeding The Rev. James R. Flynn, O.S.A., a veteran
teacher and administrator who was invited to serve as the
school’s President.
The next Director of College Counseling will inherit an
experienced team with a strong record of success in college
advising. The office has an effective, comprehensive
counseling program in place to support students and
families in every aspect of their college search, from testing
and finance to essays and course selection.
As Malvern aggressively pursues a forward-thinking
academic agenda, the next Director will play a key
leadership role in adapting the college counseling
program to keep pace with the school’s curricular
innovations and help colleges interpret the evolving
profile of Malvern’s students.

DEFINING STRENGTHS AND UNIQUE ATTRIBUTES OF THE SCHOOL
Committed to the academic, personal, and spiritual growth of each
student, Malvern Preparatory School offers a strong community that
honors the triangle of home, school, and faith as vital components in the
development of young gentlemen and scholars. The college preparatory
academic curriculum is integrated with the campus ministry and
Christian service programs – all guided by allegiance to the values of
truth, unity, and love. The school fosters a spirit of brotherhood among
students and exceptionally strong relationships between students and
faculty that extend well beyond the classroom.
The Augustinian Friars, in collaboration with the laity, provide the
Malvern community with spiritual sustenance in a variety of settings.
Daily Mass is celebrated each morning for those who wish to attend.
Every school day and each class session begins with a short prayer. A weekly Morning Prayer in the campus
chapel brings the school community together. Frequent Eucharistic liturgies are celebrated for teams, groups,
classes and families, as well as for special festive occasions, feasts, and seasons within the liturgical school year.
One highlight of the Malvern experience for many students is the senior weekend retreat known as MECO
(Malvernians Encountering Christ in Others). Malvern’s Christian Service Program provides an opportunity for
each student to translate his values into direct service to others, locally and across the world. Teachers work hand
in hand with their students to demonstrate servant leadership in a variety of settings, including two‐week service
trips that provide a transformational capstone experience for most students.
Malvern is nearing completion of its 2011‐2016 Strategic Plan, which was built around these core values and has
achieved explicit goals in several areas, including curriculum, faculty quality, enrollment and marketing, student
life, and finances. To understand the vision guiding Malvern’s plans for the future, candidates should review the
school’s

THE POSITION: DIRECTOR OF COLLEGE COUNSELING
The next Director of College Counseling will assume
responsibility for a high-functioning office that includes a fulltime Associate Director, two part-time Counselors, and a fulltime administrative assistant. The Associate Director is
currently serving as Interim Director until the position is
filled.
Each of the counselors in the office – including the Director –
assumes responsibility for counseling about 40 junior families
and 40 senior families. The Director ultimately will report to
the Head of School and will collaborate with him on the
strategic vision for the office; however, the Director will work most closely with the Assistant Head of School and
the Head of the Upper School to manage the short-term goals for the office and oversee day-to-day operations.
Key responsibilities of the incoming Director will include:
•
Leading the development, implementation, and maintenance of a comprehensive, integrated plan for
delivering college counseling services to students and their families.
•
Providing direct academic counseling for all students (grades 9-12) in regard to curriculum planning, testing,
and the college application and enrollment process.
4
•
Overseeing and directly supporting the writing of school recommendations for seniors applying to
postsecondary schools.
•
Overseeing visits to colleges and hosting college recruiters.
•
Collaborating with the Athletic Director and Director of Athletic Recruitment to help athletes and their
families navigate the athletic recruiting process.
•
Continually evaluating the quality, efficiency, and
effectiveness of the college counseling office and seeks to
improve its function when and where appropriate.
•
Managing the budget of the college counseling office.
•
Leading all members of the college counseling staff,
inspiring them and guiding them to perform at their very
best. This will include regular performance reviews and
feedback delivered in both formal and informal settings.
•
Advocating for staff concerns and collaborating with coworkers across venues and forums to share expertise and
achieve the global mission of the school.
WHO SHOULD APPLY: DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & QUALITIES
Leading the college counseling office at Malvern requires an experienced and self-assured leader who will build
on the success of the former Director and develop the team and the systems necessary to serve families well,
maximize opportunities for Malvern graduates, and counsel them to make wise choices throughout their college
search.
The successful candidate will actively support the mission of Malvern Prep and embrace the school’s Catholic
identity. She or he will work to be a visible and engaged member of the school community, getting to know the
school’s programs, faculty, and families.
He or she must successfully design a college counseling program that keeps pace with Malvern’s ambitious
academic vision. As students and faculty pursue less traditional modes of teaching, learning, and assessment,
applications from Malvern students will evolve as well. It will fall to the college counseling office to educate
colleges and universities about the school’s new pedagogical directions. The Director will lead the effort to help
college recruiters interpret the most progressive elements of Malvern’s educational program and understand the
strengths of its graduates.
The ideal candidate will also offer the following qualifications and characteristics:
•
A bachelor’s degree is required and an advanced degree is preferred, ideally in education, counseling, or
an allied field.
•
At least five years of full-time work experience in college guidance at an independent school or in college
admissions at a regionally or nationally competitive institution, preferably in a supervisory role.
•
A strong track record of teambuilding and demonstrated success creating a culture of collaboration and
collegiality.
•
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including listening, writing, and public speaking.
5
•
The motivation to develop and maintain a deep knowledge of market trends in higher education and a
mastery of innovative practices in college counseling; a commitment to the professional development of
oneself and his/her team.
•
A broad and deep understanding of strategies for financing higher education (scholarships, need-based
financial aid, tax-exempt college saving plans, and so on) for families at all income levels pursuing
opportunities at various price points.
•
An ability to imagine, articulate, and establish a creative, compelling, forward-thinking vision for the
college counseling experience at Malvern.
•
Organized and goal-oriented; able to manage multiple assignments, prioritize tasks, meet firm deadlines,
and track the progress of short- and long-term initiatives.
•
Positive energy and a calm demeanor.
•

constructive feedback from all constituents.
•
A progressive, entrepreneurial spirit; eager to define
