THE CO PPER NEWS
THE worlrl outdoors is a beautiful, living place where the
wonders of sky and water and
color and g rowth, life, and even
death. are v1vidly presented to
even the most casual eye.
True. the teeming concrete and
~tee l canyons of the city streets
a rc beautif ul, and "alive"- but
not in the same way. The boundaries of a city may reach outward
and with this outward growth the
ed1llces of stone and steel must
reach ever higher into the sky.
But, always behind this progress
the impt-tus has to come from
man himsclL A building neve•·
grows." Man must conceive this
~rowth in h is mind nnd make it
reality through the labor ol his
hands. Yet In the &rent world omdoors a tiny seedlin& will sprout
on a mountaintop and in nature's
i!ood hmc throw a lengthy shadow
mto the valley below; a flower
w11l bloom among the rocks of the
desert; and a rolling river w1ll
roll and roll a nd roll, ever flowing.
The re <>hould be a harmonious
rC'Ialionship between the asphalt
jungle and the true wilderness,
these two " worlds" on our planet.
And, we s hould a ll r ea lb.e that
some things that are a part of one
"world" have no place in the other. 1\Ian will use machines and
tools anil chemicals to keep his
living area c lean. lie c uts the
grass c lose to the earth, sprays
polson to k111 Insects that inhabit
his ground, the air about him and
the eaves or his buildings. And
these things man must do to enjoy a liveable environment.
Jt 1s indeed man's world . Someday he may fully realize this fact
and the few who have worked hard
and long to protect and preserve
the natural beauty of the world
<•Utdoors will then be justly r ewarded.

UJ WAITED for the train a t Cov-

a legend of the city. Recently, I
waited patiently for the coming of
a plane that had been crossing
the nation from Washington City.
The plane came, almost on time,
in spite ol adverse weather co.tditions along its route. But I was
really waiting for a man on board
- my son. I had not seen him in
quite a while, and it was a reUef
and a joy when he arrived that
tempestuous n ight.
He Is a good boy-now grown
taller than his father and more
successful in lite. Let me be content that I have a son bigger than
myself and that he is bearing well
the beat that I can leav~ him-a

In the bu rry and business of life
and the wide separation of residence, we seldom see each other .
But I know he is thlnk1fli of me·

saloon, J ohnny 'Logan laid his paper aside and glanced towa rd the
back room where his bartender
was cleaning up. No one else was
around.
"Matt." Johnny spoke, "I've already warned you to stay away
from my girl, Rosie Hall. This is
the second warning. There will
only be one more."
Matt's startled look faded 1from
Ius eyes and he smiled conte.rppttuously. He walked across the rj)Om
and sat down while Johnny watched
him baleMly. A minute later he
laid his gun oo the bar and began
counting the notches on the handle
in a voice loud enough to reach
Matt. "One- two-three--four, " he
intoned.
Matt's eyes grew bard for a
moment, then his lips twisted with
another smile. "Is the count correct?" he asked, amused.
" Yes. And I've still got room for
another."
Matt shrugged.
" These are for men I've met in
old Texas," J ohnny s aid, frostily.
"Didn't want to do It, but had to.
Can:te to Oklahoma In hopes of outliving the rep It gave me. Want to
be respectable, if I can."
"I see," Matt responded dryly.
Silence settled over the saloon
and lasted for several minutes.
·Then Matt went to the bar, ordered
a drink. tossed it otT, and went to
the street.
An hour later he re-entered the
place with Rosie Hall clin&ing to
his arm. Matt ordered whiskey and
Rosie ginger ale. They stood silent
for se•eral minutes watching the
anger building up in Johnny's !ace,
then went to the street laughing.
Matt returned to tbe bar room a
few minutes later. The saloon was
be&lnning to tul up, and J ohnny
didn't see him until he stepped to
the bar and ordered a drink. Johnny leaned toward him.
"Mf!et me out front 'It five to-
night," he said. Matt gave a slight
nod. " Bring your gun with you.
too," he directed.
The day passed slowly. Johnny
cleaned and oiled his gun and laid
it on the back bar. He noticed that
Rosie was in the crowd but he was
busy and ignored her.
Johnny glanced at the clock often, and as the minute hand
crawled toward the hour holstered
his gun and went outside. Matt was
coming down the street, his gun
dangling from his hand.
" We' ll stand back to back, take
five steps as I count them, turn
when I give the word, and fire."
"Just suits me fine," Matt replied.
The crowd drew back as they
moved to 1he middle of the street.
They stood back to back for a few,
moments. and . Johnny" began to
count. At the wprd they faced each
other. J ohnny crouched, tense.
Matt stood erect, his eyes smiling.
They raised their guns and tired
simultaneously.
" That's enough, Johnnie," Matt
said. "We're both using blank
shells. His voice showed amusement.
Johnny looked at his gun and began cursing. Matt walked up to him
and said softly: "Let's go into the
back room. I've got sometbin& to
explain."
Johnny foUowed hi m , somewhat
daz.ed.
"You've got me all wrong." Matt
began when the door closed behind
them. Rosie Hall is my half sister.
You've been so backward in your
courting we decided to bring you
to time by making you jealous. She
loaded your gun with blanks when
you wasn't looking. I didn't aim to
hurt you, and had blanks in my
gun, too."
Johnny looked his amazement.
"Then-then-•· he stammered.
"Forget it. You're still respectable in this community. In tact, us
fellows want you to run for sherit'l'
next elt>ction."

When one of the folks wanted to
build a bouse or barn they cut the
trees down and hauled the logs to
the site of the building, then set a
day known as "log raising day."
Men and boys, women a nd children came from miles a round bringing baskets of food .
A man with a sharp ax would go
to each corner of the building.
Others would put logs in place and
the cornermen would notch and fit
logs Into phice. For a one-story
buildin!! they would raise It eight
or ten logs high; for a story and
one-half building, 12 to 14 logs.
One log raismg I never will forget. An old man was on one corner
and qulle a crowd of young men
and boys were there. An older
man, not able to work, rode up on
his mule and warned the crowd
to stand back. since the ax might
slip out of the other man's hand
and hurt or kill someone.
" This ax is not getting away,"
the cornerman said. ''Newcombe
has a hold on this ax."
The very next stroke, his ax
flew through the air, but the crowd
had moved back. Newcombe never
said a word Just looked foolish .
