Both flotilla 12-1 and flotilla 12-3 met with the SC DNR for interviews. Beside airing a three minute segment on May 28, WLTX also produced a 30 minute special on water safety. See pages 6 and 7 for more information and pictures. 1 A Note from the Flotilla Commander Perry Moses, III FC mail to: [email protected] My hat is off to each member of our flotilla as we all work very hard to promote safe boating in our AOR. Many thanks to each of you for all you do. As our two busiest months wind down and we get ready for our traditional boating season, let‟s keep up the good work even if at a somewhat relaxed pace. Joe Livingston FSO-OP and I are planning to have safety patrols at least twice a month and we need to move all our crew and coxswain candidates forward with the goal of having them ready for QE by midsummer. Ron Cunningham FSO-VE needs each of our VE‟s to help with VSC blitzes and to continue to do VSCs on their own. Don‟t forget that in order to retain your certification, you need to do a minimum of five VSCs each year. We also need to continue to recruit new members. John Owen FSO-HR is doing a fantastic job of following up with our prospective members. I urge each of our members to be on the lookout for prospects that share our commitment to safe boating and want to spread the word to the boating public. Larry Odom FSO-PE continues to do his usual great job and has presented a number of public education courses over the winter and spring. Every time we provide even a little education to the boating public, we have helped make the lake safer and possibly prevented a tragedy. Lee Rudd FSO-PV has taken the bull by the horns and has greatly expanded our number of partner sites. Each PV is encouraged to check their partner sites often to make sure the display racks are well stocked and to answer any questions the partner may have. Sue Carty FSO-PB and Don Carty FSO-IS each continue to do a great job with their respective responsibilities. Our newsletter is being recognized at the division and district level for its content and presentation. Don continues to see that all of our activities are promptly and accurately reported to AuxData. Flotilla 12-1 continues to exhibit the true spirit of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary with all hands pitching in to make a real difference. It is truly my honor to lead this wonderful team. Thank you for accepting this position which is important to make the public aware the USCG Auxiliary is active in the Lake Marion area and the services we make available to them. TO OUR PREVIOUS FSO-PA - Richard Phillips A big thank you for your past service as our FSO-PA. We appreciate your time and services in this position since we started our new flotilla last year. 3 SC DNR AT OUR FLOTILLA MEETING Lt Tim Baxley with the SCDNR attended our regular May 17, 2010 flotilla meeting. During his remarks, he was most complimentary of our efforts to promote boating safety and wants to find ways for us to better work together in this endeavor. Lt. Baxley has responsibility over both Lake Marion and Lake Murray, but with the cutbacks in personnel in the DNR, has a limited number of officers to cover this large area. With the coming of the prime boating season and especially during holiday weekends, he is anxious to enlist our help, both on the water and at launching sites ,to insure that boats carry the required safety equipment and to encourage people to wear their life jackets. ABS (ABOUT BOATING SAFETY) CLASS HELD On May 15, the ABS Course was held at Simpsons Hardware in Sumter. There were four students, two fathers with each of their sons, attended and passed the course. Please refer to the full article in Larry Odom‟s FSO-PE report. Among the information Steve communicated with the children was about pollution. The event was very well received by faculty and children alike. - - Pictures by Steve Rodvansky -- RIVER DAY, SANTEE STATE PARK Steve Rodvansky represented our flotilla for a public affairs event on May 15 at the 2nd Annual Santee RIVERKEEPER Waterbody Rally in Santee State Park. Wearing life jackets, boating safety and pollution, including the pollution game, were the items highlighted. 5 WLTX-TV CHANNEL 19 PRESS EVENT ON MAY 21 Article by Joe Livingston, FSO-OP Flotilla 12-1 Lake Marion Photos by Barbara Burchfield, SO-PA 12 Flotilla 12-3 Lake Murray On Friday, May 21, members of flotilla 12-1 operations group participated in a public safety awareness patrol mounted in collaboration with flotilla 12-3 and the SC DNR on Lake Murray, SC. This patrol was mounted at the request of WLTX-TV in Columbia, SC, in an effort to promote boating safety to the South Carolina public in the wake of the recent fatal boating accidents that occurred on Lake Murray, and the high number of boating related deaths that have already occurred in state waters this year. Barbara Burchfield, State Auxiliary Liaison Officer and Division 12 Public Affairs Officer and husband Festus, FSO-PV of 12-3, worked with the staff at WLTX in planning the event which included the demonstration of some of the “Rules of The Road” for boating as well as interviews with Barbara Burchfield and state DNR officials. While the Burchfields‟, on flotilla 12-3 operational facility (OPFAC) “Unit 1”, provided a stable platform for the film crew, the DNR boat with 3 officers onboard and flotilla 12-1 OPFAC “Reel Thrill” with Perry Moses, Larry Odom, and Joe Livingston onboard, demonstrated the proper way for two boats to safely cross each other‟s paths when closing at 90 degrees, when meeting head on, and when one boat is overtaking another. The filming went well with the WLTX staff getting plenty of good footage both on the water, and on the dock at flotilla 12-3 headquarters, Flotilla Island. Their plan at the time of filming was to air the segment on the evening news sometime during the week of May 23, which is the 2010 National Safe Boating Week. They also had the segment available on their website www.wltx.com - for several days. The segment actually aired on May 21. There is much work yet to be done in promoting boating safety on South Carolina waters. The U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, and the DNR, along with many other state and local agencies, are working hard toward this end. And we now owe the staff at WLTX a great big “Thank You” for their efforts to help promote boating safety in South Carolina! ….. Bravo Zulu, WLTX!
