Message From the director
ENERGIZE WALLINGFORD! This is our motto heading into this spring.
The Parks and Recreation Spring 2012 Guide provides plenty of
opportunities for all of our residents. We are at the half way point of winter,
and to say the least, a rather mild one compared to the Winter of 2011.
In 2012, we have prepared a wide assortment of classes and activities for
all ages. Whether you are looking to get fit, discover a new interest or meet
new people, these classes provide you the opportunity to meet your goals.
Our special events are scheduled throughout the year and are designed for
all age groups. From the Golden Egg Easter Egg Hunt, to the Digital Camera
Scavenger Hunt, family friendly fun is available for everyone. No matter
what your interest, you can probably find it at Wallingford Parks and
Recreation Department. There is no better time than right now to sign up
for a class, join a team or get out and enjoy a park. And, most importantly,
HAVE FUN! While searching through our spring offerings, now more than
ever is a great time to begin planning for the summer. Check out some
summer offerings on our back cover.

TRAVELING F.Y.I.’s
This year we hope you will find many new opportunities to travel this spring. We are proud to announce a continued working agreement with
Friendship Tours. The staff at Friendship Tours and the Parks and Recreation Department has lined up some new trips for the 2012 trip year. We
are also excited to announce we will continue to partner with the North Branford Parks and Recreation Department on a share a bus program on
certain trips. This new relationship has worked extremely well this past year in filling buses for our trips and preventing trip cancellations.
Reminder, trip itineraries are subject to change and the Parks and Recreation Department will do its best to notify travelers ahead of time. We
look to continue the trend this year. We hope you find this line up enjoyable and we look forward to seeing you board the bus! All trips are subject

to change in price and itinerary. Day tour cancellation policy applies to all Wallingford Park & Recreation day tours operated
by Friendship Tours Inc. Any passenger that cancels a reservation 7 days or less prior to departure will not be eligible for a
refund. We will examine cancellations on a case by case basis to determine any exceptions to this rule. Please note the
Recreation Dept. will make every effort to send a representative from the office to see off the trip to and from our destination
and to hear any complaints, concerns and or recommendations. It should be understood that this person is not a tour guide.
Please retain the same seats throughout the trip. A tip for the coach driver is included in the trip fee. Please contribute only if
you wish since the gratuity is included in the trip fees. Trips are rain or shine, unless the tour company cancels. Many trips
involve walking tours; either with a tour guide or on your own. Children must be accompanied by an adult unless otherwise
specified. No lap sitters on the coach bus. Complete trip itineraries will be distributed on the morning of the trip. Travel
insurance is recommended for overnight trips and is offered through Friendship Tours. Forms are available at the Recreation

2012
The following programs have been designed to help participants with disabilities get the most out of their
leisure experience. These programs have been modified to provide a safe and supportive environment to
learn and practice both program skills and personal skills. Peer mentors attend most programs to provide
visual and social cues and to keep things fun. These and other supportive services are also available to
anyone who wishes to attend any of our other programs. For further information on supportive services,
please call the office (203) 294-2120 to speak with our Assistant Recreation Program Specialist, Emily
Swindelles.

Challenging behavior is any behavior that:
• interferes with children’s learning,
development, and success at play
• is harmful to the child, other children or
adults
• puts a child at high risk for later social
problems or school failure
A child’s aggressive, anti-social, problematic or
inappropriate behavior is a sign that he is upset
and having a problem. In this workshop we will
explore the many reasons for challenging
behaviors and ways to respond that will help
children find positive ways to communicate their
needs to others.
Title: Strategies to Help Children Focus,

Children in preschool can be energetic, noisy,
strong willed and have short attention spans.
Preschool teachers and daycare providers tend
to become concerned if the children they teach
are overly hyperactive or have short attention
spans. This workshop will provide information
to help adults who work with young children
understand the difference between common age
appropriate behavior and attention deficit and
hyperactivity disorder. It will also provide strategies that will increase children’s ability to
focus, learn self control and get along better
with peers.
Title: Observing Behavior of Young
Children and Developing Plans to Meet
their Needs
Date: Tuesday, May 22, 2012

Place: Wlfd Public Library - Community Room
Time: Program begins at 6:15 pm preceded by
pizza at 5:45 pm.
Certificates of attendance will be provided for
those requiring them.
Preschool educators utilize various observational and recording techniques to identify
behavior patterns, learning disorders or disabilities in at-risk children. Observation enables
teachers to develop an understanding of how
children progress in a classroom setting. Observation and recording can also help a teacher
assess the learning environment for the class
and make changes or improvements as needed.
Observation can aid in devising a curriculum
that is specifically designed for the individual
growth and learning of every child in the classroom. In this workshop teachers will have the
opportunity to review an observational chart,
discuss behavior triggers and how to develop
and monitor plans to increase positive behaviors
