1777, and was one of the war’s bloodiest
and costliest engagements.

Rome, like its famous namesake, has
a vibrant presence and a prominent
history. Rome evolved from a fortified
trading post at the head of the Mohawk
River in the mid-1700s. Located on one of
the most noted military and commercial
routes on the continent, it was known as
the Oneida Carrying Place or Deo-WainSta to the tribal people of the Iroquois Six
Nations. Rome’s historic Fort Stanwix,
constructed in 1758 to protect the Carrying Place from French attack during
the French and Indian War, also hosted
the Continental Army forces during the

The copper works Paul Revere founded
in 1801 continues as the Revere Copper
Company, with a manufacturing division
in Rome. The Erie Canal broke ground
here in 1817, and in 1892, Rome resident Francis Bellamy wrote the Pledge
of Allegiance.
Today Rome is renowned as a city of
famous sites, natural wonders, recreation

An Outdoor Lovers Paradise.
Located in the Adirondack foothills and
the southwestern tip of the Adirondack
Park, Oneida County’s North Country is
dotted with lakes, streams, hills, and forests of breathtaking beauty and historical
interest. Rich with living history and natural wonders, it was home and hunting
grounds to the Iroquois tribes for centuries. Eighteenth century luminaries like
William Floyd, signer of the Declaration
of Independence, and Baron von Steuben,
Revolutionary architect of military tactics
who helped guide Colonial forces to victory, made their homes here.
In the 19th century the Black River Canal,
a 77-mile engineering marvel, was built to
connect the Erie Canal with the Black River.
And, during the Civil War, Trenton Falls was
chosen by Governor Seward, Lincoln’s
Secretary of State, to be the site for a vital
meeting with international diplomats. The
spectacular falls was meant to impress the
group whose support was needed by the
Union against the Confederates.

Picturesque Villages and Farms with Historic Charm.
George Eastman, was born in the nearby
village of Waterville in 1854, around the
same time that the residents and merchants
of the Southern Hills were being preyed
upon by the Loomis Gang, notorious horse
thieves and counterfeiters.

From the charm of the Hamilton College
campus to the untamed splendor of its
forests and streams, the Southern Hills of
Oneida County is one of the loveliest areas
in the state. Historic home to Oneida and
Brothertown Indians, this scenic area is rich
in history, agriculture, and natural beauty.
In 1787, the picturesque village of Clinton
was settled by pioneer families led by the
dynamic Revolutionary War Captain Moses
Foote. Five years later, Hamilton Oneida
Academy was founded by the Reverend
Samuel Kirkland, a school that evolved and
was officially chartered in 1812 as Hamilton
College. International giant Bristol Myers
began in Clinton in 1887, and in 1912,
American statesman and Clintonian Elihu
Root was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Hamilton College. Retrace the footsteps

Since the 1800s people have been flocking
to The Beach for the sand and the sun, the
food and the fun, the water and the spectacular sunsets. The historic community of
Sylvan Beach is nestled on the shores of
Oneida Lake, the largest lake in New York
State. Landmarks include Union Chapel,
built in 1887, the 1896 Amusement Park,
and the 1915 Lighthouse at Verona Beach.

snowmobile and cross-country ski and
snowshoeing trails, we are your destination for winter fun.
Oneida County is snowmobile country
with the largest number of snowmobile
club members in the State. There are
well-groomed trails through scenic hills,
forests and fields, parks and preserves
that cover the map from one end of the
County to the other. From trails on the Old
Erie Canal Trail to the great State Parks at
Verona Beach and Delta Lake, there are
hundreds of town and country trails to
ride, it’s truly a snowmobiler’s paradise!
We are also part of the Tug Hill Region
and offer scenic rides from Oneida Lake
to the North Country, connecting neighboring trails on the Tug Hill Plateau and
into the world-renowned Adirondack
Park trail system.
And that’s not all! Skiing…cross-country
and downhill, tubing, and tobogganing. We have the hills and dales, the lifts
and trails to accommodate your winter
wishes including two ski areas, Woods
Valley in Westernville and Val Bialas in
Utica. If skating is your thing, we have
rinks all over the County. Relaxation time
