This issue of VIEW provides me with an opportunity to thank the
many, many people who contribute to the University of Windsor. Our
Annual Giving Program stands as a centerpiece of the commitment
of our alumni and friends to the University. Year in and year out,
these gifts provide much-needed student financial aid, and enrich the
education, research and recreational environment of our campus.
Beyond the Annual Giving Program, we benefit from the support of
those who have given to scholarships, our endowment and capital
projects such as our Medical Education Building.
Each and every donor is adding conviction to the University of
Windsor’s reputation as a place where people from all walks of life
can find new levels of personal achievement, and a place that is
Dr. Alan Wildeman
taking action on what our communities and society expects of us.
In my role I have the privilege of speaking to many people about
the successes and aspirations of the University. I do so knowing that
each and every donor helps my words ring true.
I also want to thank the many staff, students, and volunteers who
put their energy into spreading the message about the University
of Windsor during the Annual Giving Program. Their enthusiasm is
vitally important to all of us.
I want to return to what I referred to as the aspirations of the
University of Windsor. Our University, like others, has a duty to do
the best it can in education, research and service to society. Beyond
this somewhat universal reason for being, however, there are things
that are unique to us and that we pride ourselves on. Our academic
and research programs, our community, our partnerships, and our
alumni all give us a distinctive palette from which to create a vision
for our future… our aspirations. In its simplest terms, a strategic plan
should state what these aspirations are and what we will do to fulfill
them. During the fall of 2009, we will be embarking on a process
to identify those things that we will commit to doing to make the
University of Windsor a place in which we all have even greater
pride. It will be process driven by consultation – by the consultations
I have had over the past year across the campus, with alumni, and
across the community, and by consultations that are now beginning.
You can be a part of it. Log on to www.uwindsor.ca/takingaction
and find out more. You can tell us what you think the University of
Windsor should aspire to be.
There is a direct link between aspirations and giving. Everyone
who gives to the University of Windsor should be able to see how
in some way, great or small, they contribute to fulfilling what we say
we can do. On behalf of the University of Windsor, I thank all of you
for what has been accomplished and for what will be achieved in the
future.

JOE MIMRAN – A FASHION ENTREPRENEUR WHOM ALFRED SUNG CALLS “PROBABLY
THE SMARTEST MAN I KNOW”– GOT A MOST UNLIKELY LESSON IN THE ART OF
MOTIVATING EMPLOYEES WHILE STUDYING AT UWINDSOR.
Mimran BComm ’76, the Joe behind the Loblaw’s stores line of
Joe Fresh fashion, creator of Club Monaco and Sung’s long-time
business partner, recalls his professor Bill Arison, a production
manager at Hiram Walker at the time, repeatedly telling students:
“All you’ve got to remember is when you come into the office, you
just pat everybody on the popo and everything will be tickety boo.”
“I thought, I can’t believe I’m paying for this,” Mimran says.
But then he went into business and realized the wisdom in
Arison’s words. Mimran acknowledges following that advice
throughout his illustrious career.
The man hailed as “brilliant” by Fashion Television’s Jeanne
Beker, a “superstar fashion entrepreneur” by Profit magazine and “at
the forefront of the Canadian fashion industry” by Roots co-founder
Michael Budman, is not one to live in the past. Mimran is the living
embodiment of fashion-forward; he prefers to look ahead in life.
Looking back though, he says there are certain lessons that
remain from influential people who stood out during his “grueling”
11-month, fast-track Bachelor of Commerce program at UWindsor.
Accounting Professor Dave Wilson provided a “good grounding”
in the subject, says Mimran. He says he also benefited greatly
from his business strategy course. It included modeling exercises
in which students would analyze such strategies as injecting more
capital into a business to see how it would perform. “To this day,
those lessons still resonate,” he says.
Mimran helped repay his alma mater in 1998 by helping
kick-start a $3.6-million fundraising effort for UWindsor’s Great
Lakes Environmental Research Centre. The then-president of Club
Monaco helped stage a photo opportunity at the floor-to-ceiling
atrium of his company’s office in downtown Toronto with former
Ontario premiers David Peterson, Bob Rae and Bill Davis. All of
them were wearing leather bomber jackets provided by Mimran.
He says he became involved because Club Monaco’s selfsustaining ecosystem in the atrium had been attracting so much
interest in Canada and the U.S. Mimran adds he dined with Peterson
this summer and the former Liberal premier remembered the
moment.
Among the characteristics that define Mimran are his integrity
and his unsullied sense of brand. He says that if “you control your
brand, you control your destiny. Brand is a lot like ego; if you don’t
have integrity of brand, you have nothing.”
Mimran acknowledges that some of his measures to ensure the
purity of his brand at Club Monaco were “almost draconian”. He
actually instructed new staff members exactly how to cut their hair.
Opposite page: Joe Mimran BComm ’76
However, he says it was important that people knew from
the outset exactly what the brand was. At the time he started
Club Monaco in 1984, he says Canadian fashion outlets were all
importing their stock from the U.S. He was convinced, however, that
Canadian consumers could support a homegrown quality brand.
Well before he founded Club Monaco, Mimran had a flair for
entrepreneurship. When he was 14, he and his brother Saul started
a student discount card business. Four years later, Joe was running
an art gallery in Toronto while holding down two other jobs.
With Club Monaco successfully established by 1995, he
launched Caban, a lifestyle home products and fashion concept.
He sold both brands to Ralph Lauren Polo Corp. five years later for
U.S.$52.5-million.
Mimran then started up Joseph Mimran & Associates,
providing design, product development and brand positioning
services. Among his spinoff business ventures was Pink Tartan
with Kimberly Newport-Mimran, whom he recently married. (One
Toronto Star writer noted the couple is widely seen as the “king
and queen of Toronto’s fashion scene.”) The high-end Pink Tartan
line is carried in more than 170 stores across North America,
including Saks Fifth Avenue.
Joe Fresh was the other successful brainchild of his new
company. The line is an example of what some fashion observers
describe as the democratization of design, bringing taste and style
to the masses.
Joe Fresh was launched in 2006 and reached $400 million
in sales a year later. Loblaw has set an aggressive benchmark of
$1 billion in 2010, although Mimran points out the figure is more
symbolic than a hard-and-fast target.
What is important, he says, is how popular the brand has
become in such a relatively short time. In just three years, Joe
Fresh is the second-largest clothing label in Canada by unit sales.
Mimran points out that it takes top spot in market share in baby
wear, second in children’s wear and third in women’s clothing.
He defines Joe Fresh’s target market as women in their
“middle 30s, [with] 1.5 kids and time-starved.”
Mimran says his plans are to sustain the Joe Fresh line, which
also includes cosmetics, lingerie and hosiery, and “see whether
there’s one more big idea in me and go from there.”
That idea, too, will likely be a winner.
“Joe has super vision, super taste and great ambition. [He’s]
probably the smartest man I know,” Sung says. “As his partner for
v
30 years, he is like my brother, I love him dearly.” n

The Annual Giving Program has raised millions of dollars since its inception.
Says Susan Lester, director of alumni affairs: “Annual Giving is
about people; people give because they want to invest in the future.”
Adds Lester: “The University is committed to providing students
with an educational experience that will serve them for a lifetime –
an experience that no doubt will serve to make the world a much
better place.”
Strong alumni support lends credibility to the campaign and
encourages outside donations from corporations, foundations and
government,” says Lester. “When alumni give, it sends a strong
message that the people who know the University of Windsor best
believe in its value and want to be a part of keeping it strong.”
Says Samiran Dwivedi BSc ’04: “Having spent four wonderful
years at the University and after receiving so much from it, giving is
the least I can do to enable others to experience the same.”
And Sean Lambert BA ’06, BEd ’08 says that “Far too often
we forget the experiences that have molded us into the successful
individuals that we are. For me, giving to my alma mater symbolizes
an appreciation for my growth and development as a citizen.
Education will determine the success of current and future
generations; giving back is a way in which we can all ensure we play
a role in the development of young minds.”
In the current economic downturn, the Annual Giving Program
is an essential element of the University of Windsor’s formula for
success. The campaign has a history of raising much-needed dollars
for campus. Since 1985, millions have been generated by thousands
of alumni, friends, faculty and staff. The AGP’s importance cannot
be overstated as part of the University of Windsor’s vision for this
millennium, says University President, Dr. Alan Wildeman:
“Our Annual Giving Program stands as a centerpiece of the
commitment of our alumni and friends to the University,” says

President Alan Wildeman. “Year in and year out, these gifts provide
much-needed student financial aid, and enrich the education,
research and recreational environment of our campus. Each and
every donor is adding conviction to the University of Windsor’s
reputation as a place where people from all walks of life can find
new levels of personal achievement, and a place that is taking
action on what our communities and society expects of us.”
Annual Giving Program funds can be targeted to a wide
range of initiatives, supporting research labs, athletic teams, and
academic programs, for example. Donations can be targeted to a
specific faculty, department or program. It is an integral part of
the University’s ability to maintain a robust scholarship program,
helping UWindsor attract high-calibre students.
“As students, we tend to put education first, giving us less time
to build up our finances,” says Samara Mouawad, a fourth-year
honours business student. “Receiving a scholarship helps ease that
burden, giving us that extra motivation to continue on with our
education. It gives us great peace of mind knowing that there is a
lot of support out in the community.”
Says Lester: “Knowledge and innovation are the hallmarks of a
first-rate university. Through financial contributions to the Annual
Giving Program, we can provide students with the tools to meet the
changing demands of business, industry and society as a whole.”
What keeps Annual Giving strong is the addition of new
graduates, who join the giving circle as soon as they are financially
able, she adds. “We welcome our new grads to the alumni family
and encourage them to give back to the University, and build it up.”
Says Lester: “Annual Giving connects alumni, friends, faculty and
staff in the common goal of taking the University of Windsor into
v
the future.” n
CALLING ON YOU
Each fall, dozens of bright-eyed and eager
University of Windsor students take time away
from studying, work and their social lives
to punch in literally thousands of telephone
numbers from the campus call centre. When
the phone is answered, they ask for money to
support their university.
Asking for money is not always easy.
However, the students struggle to overcome
their nerves because they believe that the
potential to do something good is well worth
the effort.
“As a student caller, I found that many
alumni were pleased to speak with a current
student,” says Tracy Mugo, fourth year,
psychology, who helps out. “We share a
common bond – our experiences at the
University of Windsor. Even though I couldn’t
see their faces, I knew that they were smiling
on the other end of the line when sharing
some of their cherished memories.
“It was also great to know each night,
through our efforts in the call centre, that we
were raising necessary funds to help make
university accessible to students who could
not otherwise afford the opportunity,” she
adds. “Who knew a call centre could be so
rewarding?”
The Annual Giving Alumni Phonathon
will run for several weeks this fall, Sunday
through Thursday evenings.
It’s an excellent connection: the students
of yesterday and today, coming together to
support their school and help the students of
the future.
It’s also a chance for alumni to find out
what’s been happening at their alma mater,
and to update their contact information so
that they can receive the alumni magazine,
and other information and invitations from the
University.
“Our students enjoy speaking with you,”
says Mona Dosen, who coordinates the
phonathon. “So when the phone rings, we
hope you will answer the call and say, ‘Yes’.
These students’ futures will be brightened
because of your support.”
When your telephone rings one evening
this fall, and a cheerful voice says, “Hi, I’m
calling from the University of Windsor,” please
take a moment to listen. You’ll be glad you did.

Each year, the University of Windsor
celebrates the alumni, partners and friends
whose donations make an important
contribution to the success of our students.
Given the economic insecurity in 2008,
the list of donors on the following pages is
especially encouraging.
Our donors realize that their
investments in knowledge yield real returns
in a renewed economy, a sustainable
environment and a more healthy
community. At a time when the need has
never been greater, these donors enable
students to take responsibility for the future
– their own future and the future of their
community.
Making a difference. Taking
responsibility. Thinking forward. Being
influential. These are phrases heard and
seen a great deal at the University of
Windsor these days. These phrases all
originated with our students, who come to
university full of optimism and ambition.
Students today see their years of study and
discovery at university as a launching pad
into a future of opportunity.
Some of the donors listed in this issue
of View have created new scholarships or
bursaries to support deserving students.
These financial awards demonstrate the
confidence we have in our students and
have a motivational as well as a practical
impact on their success.
Donations and matching dollars
totalling almost $2.2 million boosted
scholarships in 2008. Needs-based
scholarships were eligible for the dollarfor-dollar match from the Ontario Trust for
Student Support. Total cash donations of
$3.2 million were gratefully received from
approximately 5,500 donors.
In the past year, donations of all sizes
have endorsed the initiative that produced
the Medical Education Building on our
campus. We have celebrated gifts to both
the capital project and an increase in
support for talented students in pre-med
programs who include local students
from pre-med studies at the University of
Windsor accepted to the Schulich School
of Medicine and Dentistry – Windsor
Program. We are indeed thrilled and proud
of their accomplishments. They will be the
first-ever to have received a high school
diploma, university degree and medical
education all together in this area.
This is an outcome of a project that
began with community support and,
with further commitment, will see the
expansion of health and medical education
opportunities for our young people.
The future of our community is right
here on our campus. You can see it in the
medical education building, in the plans for
the new Centre for Engineering Innovation,
in the science labs, classrooms and study
halls. You can feel it in the enthusiasm,
optimism and achievements of our
students.
For students today, higher education is
truly about thinking forward. Through their
generosity, our alumni and friends listed in
the pages that follow share in the success of
these students.

“As a student, any financial support greatly
increases the accessibility of our education.
It was my honour to receive the Commerce
Class of 1964 award. Receiving this helped
boost my confidence and also encouraged
me to work even harder in order to achieve

“I have directed most of my giving over the last
few years to expanding and beautifying the
campus. It’s nice to know that my contributions
will help future generations of students and
faculty enjoy an even better place to learn. I feel
very proud to work at the University of Windsor,
and fortunate to be able to show that pride by
giving back to the institution.”

University of Windsor Alumni
Association BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Message from the P resident
Executive
As we hurtle through life, there seems
to be little time to reflect on the past.
My volunteer involvement with the
Alumni Association has provided me with
gratifying opportunities to remember my
undergraduate and law school experiences
and to more fully appreciate the impact that
the University of Windsor has had on me
and my family.
Try to imagine your life without the
education and experiences that were afforded to you by this great
institution and think about the over 90,000 other alumni, living and
making a difference in 120 countries around the world. Our graduates
are the true, continuing measures of the value and success of
this University.
As you should be rightfully proud of your own personal
accomplishments, I would also encourage you to be a supporter
and an advocate for your alma mater. Contact our Alumni Office to
get more involved as a volunteer with our Board and committees
in organizing class reunions, special events, student mentoring, and
other initiatives.
Take some time to visit the campus to attend theatre, music and
athletic events, experience the excitement of the medical school, the
new Alumni Field and stadium, and the highly anticipated Centre for
Engineering Innovation.
Give as generously as you can in support of our Annual Giving
program, and consider making an everlasting financial gift through a
scholarship fund. Your involvement and contributions will ensure the
continued success and growth of your alma mater.
All the best,

Major Albert (Bert) Linnell, MBE, O.St.J, C.D.
Sensei Linnell did not begin studying the art of judo until he was 52 years old and it quickly became his passion. He
earned a third degree black belt, Sandan Yudansha, a feat accomplished by very few. He served as the University’s judo
coach from the late 1960s to the early 1980s, winning a team title at the provincial championships in 1967/68. Former
students say Linnell was a mentor, advisor – and a grandfather figure. He retired from coaching when he was 78.

Miles led the Lancer Golf Team as head coach for 16 years during the 1970s and
1980s. During his tenure, the team won three OUAA golf medals, four OUAA silvers
and a number of tournament titles. His focus was not on the technical aspects of
the game; rather, he concentrated on teaching his athletes how to score low and win.
He was presented with the Gino Fracas Award in 1987 as the University’s coach of
the year.
S port Achievement
Michael “Max” Karcz ’53 – Athlete and Coach
A three-sport athlete - basketball, football and track & field - Karcz was a top student
athlete at Patterson Collegiate Institute. He led teams to WSSA, WOSSA and AllOntario Basketball Championships. In 1949, he was selected for the All-City High
School Football team and was the first recipient of the Royal Arcanum Award as
the top high school athlete in Windsor. He won numerous medals in track & field in
the sprints and jumps. He went on to play basketball for Assumption College and
earned a teaching certificate. He spent 30 years teaching at Vaughan Road Collegiate
(Toronto), Walkerville Collegiate, Forster S.S. and Vincent Massey S.S. He coached
basketball, football and wrestling teams to a number of city titles as well as multiple
undefeated seasons.
Margaret Sidoroff-Canty ’99, ’08 - Boxing
One of the most accomplished Canadian female boxers, Sidoroff-Canty went
undefeated as an amateur (13-0), before bursting onto the professional scene. She
won her first professional bout by TKO in just the second round. She retired with a
8-0-1 (split decision) record, and three KOs. She took home three world titles and
was recognized as one of the best female boxers in the world. Still involved with the
sport, she has continued to coach. Achieving her Level V certification, she has been
a Canadian National Team Coach and runs the Border City Boxing Club.
T eam Achievement
Coached by Hank Biasetti the 1958/59 Lancers Basketball team had a respectable
12-10 overall record. In addition, the team put together nine conference victories

The Alumni Association is committed to making a
difference in the lives of students from the first day they
arrive on campus, to graduation and beyond. “In the last
year we granted over 25 requests and nearly $40,000 in
funding to student organizations in support of a range of
special events, extra-curricular activities and projects” said
Richard Dumala, chair of the public affairs committee of
the Alumni Association Board of Directors. “We are proud
to have supported all of these excellent requests and glad
to see so many great initiatives,” he adds. “Currently we are
refining the procedures we use to make funding decisions
more efficiently.”
“I don’t think people realize just how extensive
our awards program is,” says Jim Minello, chair of the
Associations’ awards committee. “In addition to all of our
first-year student awards, we annually sponsor, along with
the Toronto Chapter, the Robert J. Humphrey Award for
two business students valued at $6,500 each, the Alumni
Drama Award, as well as five in-course scholarships valued
at $500 each, and others.”
The Association has also supported two major capital
projects in recent years. It donated $500,000 towards
the artificial turf of Alumni Field at the new stadium and
contributed $50,000 toward the naming of the Alumni
Association Group Learning Suite in the new medical
education facility.
