NWL Leadership Program Confirmation Packet
NWL Leadership Program Confirmation Packet th th th First Day of Program: July 9 Last Day of Program: August 16 Date of BBQ: August 15 Travel Information at the START of program: Meet in North Bay, Ontario on July 9th Participants are responsible for getting themselves to North Bay, Ontario on July 9th. NWL staff will rendezvous with participants at Country Style Donuts on Seymour St. (1401A Seymour St., North Bay, ON P1B 8G4) at 6:30pm (see map). Northern Airport Service From Toronto, the simplest way to get to the rendezvous location is by using Northern Airport Service (NAS). NAS provides daily service from Pearson International Airport to North Bay. A shuttle leaves Pearson International Airport at 2:00pm, and arrives in North Bay (at Country Style) at roughly 6:30pm. If you are flying to Toronto, you will need to schedule a flight that arrives before 1:00pm on the 9th in order to catch the NAS to North Bay. Reservations are required and the drivers handle all tickets and payments on the day of travel. All passengers traveling from Pearson International Airport are required to register at the Ground Transportation desk on the arrivals level. Each terminal has its own Ground Transportation desk. For information and reservations visit: www.shuttleontario.com Ontario Northland Ontario Northland provides both Bus and Rail service from Toronto to North Bay. The O.N.T.C. Terminal is located at 100 Station Road in North Bay (see map below). For information and reservations you can call 705-‐495-‐4200 or visit their website at: www.ontc.on.ca . Please let us know if you will be arriving by Bus or Train, and if you like, we can arrange to pick you up at the station between 5:00pm and 6:00pm. Air Ontario Air Ontario (an affiliate of Air Canada) provides daily flights from Pearson International Airport to North Bay. For reservations you can call (from Canada): 888-247-2262 or (from USA): 800-776-3000. For more information and schedules, you can visit their web site at: www.airontario.ca . If you decide to fly to North Bay on the 9th, please schedule a flight that arrives before 5:00pm. Please let us know if you will be arriving by plane, and if you like, we can arrange to pick you up at the airport between 5:00pm and 6:00pm. Alternatively, you can invite your family to join us for the end of session BBQ. End of Session BBQ We would love to have families join us for our NWL barbeque and celebration on the second to last day of the program, August 15th. The BBQ is a great way to get a sense of participants’ experience, meet our staff, tour our facility—and the delicious food is an added bonus. The BBQ is held at Northwaters island basecamp. Staff will meet parents, family and friends at the end of the Temagami Access Road by the Manitou landing at 12:00 noon on the day of the BBQ and boat them into basecamp. Guests are welcomed at Northwaters with a light snack and a tour of the facility in time for the participants to paddle in around 3:00 pm. Please indicate on your travel form if you plan to attend the BBQ and how many will be in your party. If you can’t make it to the Manitou Landing for our 12:00 noon shuttle but would still like to attend the BBQ, there are two means of public transportation into Northwaters: Lakeland Airways offers floatplane service from the town of Temagami (705.569.3455) and there are several water taxi services which depart from the end of the Temagami Access Road. We recommend Loon Lodge’s taxi service (705.237.8918). At the end of the BBQ, staff will be available to boat parents back to the Manitou landing by 9:00 pm, or you may arrange a water taxi at your convenience. You are welcome to spend the night at Northwaters and boat out the following morning with the participants, although accommodations are somewhat rustic. We recommend you bring along a tent and sleeping bags to accommodate your party. Alternatively, there are several places to stay overnight nearby. We recommend the following local accommodations, but in addition you can visit the Temagami Chamber of Commerce website: www.temagamiinformation.com for more accommodation options: Temagami Shores Inn & Resort (705.569.3200) Location: on the way into the town of Temagami, off Highway 11 Deepwater Lodge (705.237.8972) Location: on Lake Temagami across from the Manitou Landing Loon Lodge (705.237.8918) Location: on Lake Temagami near the landings There is a foot trail to Loon Lodge (see map) Finlayson Point Provincial Park (705.569.3205) Location: just outside of town off Highway 11 —public campgrounds with facilities If you can’t make it for the BBQ, but would still like to pick up your child in Temagami at the end of session, you can meet us by 8:00 am at the Manitou Landing (end of the Lake Temagami Access Road) on the last day of the program. Non-‐Canadian Residents With the establishment of new travel regulations in the U.S. and Canada, all participants should travel with a passport, whether they are flying or driving. In addition to a passport, your child will also need a signed letter from parents or guardians stating that they are traveling in Canada to attend a wilderness canoeing program in Temagami, Ontario. All airline tickets, important papers and valuables will be collected for safekeeping upon arrival at basecamp. Drugs and Alcohol The use of alcohol or drugs (including cigarettes and marijuana) is absolutely not permitted. Possession of illegal drugs in Canada is punishable by law and crossing the Canadian border with illegal drugs is a serious criminal offense. If participants are found in possession of illegal drugs, they will be removed from our program at the parents/guardians expense and tuition will not be refunded. While we usually have someone available to answer calls during the day, we try very hard to limit phone time to urgent communications only. Our basecamps are located on islands in some remote country—our phone line is our primary link with staff in the field and emergency services. The best way to contact us with general questions, travel information/updates, participant information etc. is by email. We will be happy to respond with thoughtful and thorough responses in a timely manner. Contacting Participants Please address mail to: (your child’s name) C/O Northwaters or Langskib Bear Island Post Office Temagami, ON POH 1CO Canada We suggest mailing letters early so they arrive in time for participants to receive when they return to basecamp at the end of session. Letters from outside of Canada may take a week to fourteen days. Participants are encouraged to write letters home. Canadian stamps can be purchased at basecamp. Sending Parcels & Care Packages Our basecamps are located on islands not serviced by any courier/shipping company. It is often expensive, difficult and time consuming to get a package to either island. Packages are delayed at customs or delivered to random locations on the mainland for us to retrieve. Often times, participants don’t receive packages at all, or they arrive after the participants have gone home. We recommend you send letters in lieu of packages and save special treats for a welcome home celebration. We strongly advise against sending anything perishable or of value. Please Note: If a participant arrives without an important piece of personal gear, we will make arrangements to lend or procure a replacement. Leadership Program Check-‐off List for you To Do £ Make certain you have personal identification and passport with travel letter if non-‐Canadian resident £ Make travel reservations/arrangements and return Travel Form as soon as possible £ Complete Medical Form and return. All participants (including those returning) must have a completed, signed, yearly, up to date health form to participate £ Pay tuition, tax and travel balance by May 15th or as stated on invoice £ Pack gear NWL Standard Equipment List Comfortable clothes appropriate for the changeable Temagami weather will make all the difference in your experience on trail. Conditions range from cold and wet to hot and sunny, sometimes in the same day. There is no need to buy expensive gear; in fact you may have many of these items already. Layers are key, as are synthetic materials that will keep you warm even when wet. When packing or shopping, please keep in mind that clothing will see hard use, and EVERYTHING YOU BRING SHOULD BE LABLED WITH FIRST AND LAST NAME. £ 1 duffel bag. Everything you bring should fit in this bag. The duffel is to simplify travel from your home to basecamp and make it easier to identify you when you arrive at the airport, bus terminal or in Temagami. It will not be going on trail with you. We will provide a special canoe pack (Duluth) for you to take on trail. £ 1 55 liter ‘dry bag’; this is a waterproof bag that will hold all of your clothing and personal gear within the Duluth pack. Dry bags are available at outdoor stores and on-line and range in price from $25 to $50 US. A note about clothing: whenever possible please try to bring clothing made from synthetic fibers or polyester blends as opposed to 100% cotton. Synthetic fibers are more durable and keep you warmer when they are wet. £ 1 durable water bottle, 1 liter capacity (aluminum, stainless steel or heavy duty plastic- Nalgene or Sigg-type bottle) £ Underwear (enough for the duration of your stay) £ 2 long underwear tops (long sleeve wool, synthetic fiber or polyester blend- quick dry, no cotton) £ 1 pair of long underwear bottoms (wool, synthetic or polyester blend- quick dry, no cotton) £ 1 pair of fleece pants (or other warm, loose fitting, light weight, durable, quick-drying material) £ 4 pairs of warm wool socks (or material designed to insulate like wool) £ 2 pairs of shorts (light weight & durable) £ 3 tee shirts (synthetic fiber or polyester blend, limit cotton) £ 1 swimsuit (2 piece preferable for girls) £ 1 hat with brim (sunhat or baseball cap) £ 1 wool or fleece hat/toque £ 1 fleece jacket (200 weight or higher) £ 1 towel (mid-size, synthetic “chamois” type not giant, cotton beach towel type) £ 1 set of rain gear (jacket and pants, no ponchos. They should be close-toed running shoes or light hiking boots/shoes) £ 1 pair of ‘wet shoes’* (these shoes will be worn throughout the day while canoeing and portaging on trail. Please bring close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and dirty, but ones that will also give you ample support while portaging—worn, lightweight running/hiking shoes are preferred, try to avoid boots of any kind) *Please note: ‘Tevas’, ‘Crocs’, ‘Keens’ or sandals/watershoes of any kind are dangerous on the trail. They will not be accepted as a substitute for trail footwear and may only be worn for swimming. £ 1 pair UV rated sunglasses (attachment cord recommended) £ Sun block (waterproof SPF 30 recommended) £ Environmentally friendly, travel-size toiletries—don’t forget your toothbrush! £ Biodegradable soap (liquid soaps are best. We recommend ‘Dr. Bronners’ or ‘Camp Suds’ available at most outdoor stores) £ Insect repellant—no aerosols please. The most effective insect repellants contain some percentage of DEET. £ 1 cup (metal or durable plastic—insulated is fine but not necessary) £ 1 knife/fork/spoon set £ 1 headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries £ 1 knife (folding or sheath, simple or multi-tool) 3-5” blade ideal £ 1 compact sleeping bag (‘mummy’ type preferred, rated for 400 F or 50 C with a maximum packed size of 18”x10”) £ 1-2 comfortable basecamp/travel outfits (cotton, jeans, hoodies, sweatshirts/pants etc. are fine.
